How NOISY are Yamaha HS5 Studio Monitors with Balanced Cables? | Audio HISS Review

- STUDIO Monitors are beast mode for high quality true sound, however there's a serious problem with them and in this review we investigate just how much self-noise they make WHEN NOTHING IS PLAYING.
We dive into how XLR and TRS balanced cables work, test out three prong to two prong adapters and Yamaha's HS5 Studio Monitors (Speakers) ready to be paired to our MacBook Pro via a Focusrite Scarlett DAC interface.
RESULTS
- With just one monitor (speaker) plugged in I could hear the noise from 1.5m away, usually computer desktop speakers with bad self noise issues fade out after around 20/30cm, these however WITH JUST ONE connected are beasts.
- Using a three prong to two prong adapter does nothing for me - I do already run my current through a UPS, so my electricity is already clean.
- Balanced cables are great, but the noise levels with just the speaker (monitor) turned on is just abusive to a working environment.

I had the same problem and i found out it was my pc wifi module i made a longer distance between it and the speakers and it was totally solved with complete silence regarding my ears ... one of the best true sound i have heard.

It only sends out what its connected too so if your laptop has some issues then its going to come through the speakers.

I had the same issue, and randomly enough the problem was that my computer keyboard was plugged on the same usb hub that my focusrite was ( actually pluging my soundcard to an external powered usb hub helped a lot too )
I think there might be an issue here, I've used these for a few years now with various interfaces, cables and also genelec speakers alongside at times and I've never had the hiss, seems really strange to me
You have proper grounding at home… yeah?
For a true baseline I would suggest powering up the speakers in a room with no other equipment anywhere near. No computers, no audio gear, no wifi no routers. I tracked down an an issue with my HS8s and it turned out to be my wifi router. Drove me crazy until I moved the speaker to another area away from all other equipment and then I knew the noise was not inherent in the speaker.

What was the level set to on the back of the speaker? I had issues when I cranked my studio monitors internal level all the way (more of a buzz than hiss). But setting it to something lower and using a DAC/pre-amp for volume control worked well. Specifically, it was a Teac UD-301 > XLR > KRK Rokit 5.
On this guy, the buzz was there even when it was set to the minimum level.
Everything you said is absolutely correct. Great sounding speakers that just don’t work silently and they aren’t magnetically shielded :/

@2000 this is exactly my situation. My hs8’s produce a hum simply when plugged into the wall ever since i moved to my new place. I just bought the iFI GND defender to see if it fixes the issue. What a frustrating ordeal.
What'd you settle with in the end?
I just got a pair of these, in white, exactly the same as yours. With unbalanced, 10' long 1/4" cables plugged in, there was some noise - not a buzz really, but some strange high frequencies. And only really present at full volume. When I switched to 4' balanced 1/4" cables, there is absolutely no noise, not even a faint buzz. So maybe they've done an upgrade since you got yours, or maybe you got a faulty speaker. But all I can say is, first plugged in with balanced cables connected to my audio interface, mine are QUIET, and that's with the volume all the way up.
the yamaha has self noise at all times, with nothing plugged in at all. Thats how they are, It doesnt matter the volume setting. Power up with nothing at all connected and put your ear to speaker. Its buzzing.
I had the krk 5 and have never had hiss. Did you try it?

Because he didn't actually show the hissing, he literally had the speaker right there but couldn't put a mic on it to see if it was a shielding issue or ground hum or what.
Helppp! My HS5 as making a very high pitched (and very loud, I can't even work) sound as soon as I turn them on and I've tried everything. It does that even when it's not plugged to the interface or if absolutely nothing is on next to it (my setup is just the monitors and a scarlet 18i8 and it does that even when everything is off, the internet modem is far away as well as other electronics), when it is just simply plugged with the power cable. I've tried changing plugs but yeah it makes this noise as soon as I turn it on, just with the power cable plugged into it. What could that be??
Hey Ash, what could you say about a maxed out 16” mbp with the Rx 5700 XT egpu? Is there any point on buying the egpu. I need it to allow me to run an external monitor without the mbp overheating.

Haha I have 25 year old Energy Pro .5 speakers (Made in Canada) that don't hiss. I've paired mine with a cheap Nobsound Chinese Class D amp, sounds great. I was thinking of upgrading to Yamaha HS5s, apart from the hiss they do have a flat and unflattering sound that is great for mixing!

The only time you will hear that is when:
-There's no music playing AND -You have the volume pumped up.
these are some of the best speakers known to the human ear, and you're kicking off about how they perform with no sound going through them? I have the HS8s and they sound better than anything i've ever heard in all my days, they literally changed my life.

seems many people dont understand the hiss vs buzz sounds ... my hs7's have that very low amp hiss but its barely noticble unless i put my ear to the speaker with full volume on back
(half is where i have mine set).... my issue is the damn buzzing generated from my pc ... all gpu related as anything like watching youtube or gaming generates a lovely buzzing .... and i dont have a balanced dac right now (topping dx3 pro) which should fix that problem ??? but i do have my eye on the smsl m500.
HoT is right! 1st day of use, Im chillin here 22:30 aquaruim pump in the background all fine, Spotify playing piano music you know. Then it got to me! There is a hisss in the freaking speakers! Not loud but static as HoT is saying. Maybe i need to work a little bit more on my hearing loss. Despite all of that they still sound great.
Do they hiss with just power plugged on ? I've the Presonus Eris 4,5' and the hiss is very noticeable with them.

Hey Friends, so I ran into the same problem a few years back and I spoke to a friend of mine who is an Electrical Engineer. If you can find it, try the iFi iDefender3.0 External USB Audio Ground Loop Eliminator. Last I remember, it was around $50 USD. It takes a fantom power via USB. The device eliminated the "hissing/buzzing" sound that I was experiencing with my Yamaha HS5's. Hope that helps, and best of luck to you.

how does that work when the Yamahas make their own noise? Its not coming from the USB device when thats not plugged in. Yamahas buzz without a source.
1.Change the Output cables of Audio Interface.
2.I use Yamaha HS8 ,I cannot hear unessery noise on that. I highly suggest to use premium or High quality XLR male To TRS male cable.Not the unbalanced TS one.
3.Do not use any Sort of adapters or Audio spliters from the output of Audio interface to Speaker input.Trust me, Your Interface Gives Best Quality Of audio Input and Output .
4.Do not use TRS to TS Left and Right Splitter cable from Headphone output to the speakers Input in your Audio Interface.
5.Use 2 Seperate (TRS to XLR) {or} (TRS to TRS) Cable For individual Direct output From Back of Audio Interface's Left and Right Channel.
6.set your Levels at -4 Db/middle point of potentiometer/ Middle point of Volume Knob, in the back of monitors.
7.Check your Soundcard Drivers For Updates.
You will Definately solve your Problem.I promice that.

My cables are XLR to RCA and I plug them directly into a Pioneer DDJ-RR but I still get noise. Would it make any sense to keep the speakers at -2db (cant hear noise there) and then get an external amp to plug them into in order to make them louder?
hs5 user here, new hs5 monitors, separate trs to xlr cable, the noise seems to do with the location of the speaker, but in a very strange way. sometimes the noise comes when my imac is loading a youtube video , so i thought it might has something to do with wifi signal interference,
I have balanced cables if I plug power into my monitor from my Dell monitor my Hs5 speakers make static fuzzy low noise still.

There's no risk of fire removing ground from your monitors. I got HS7's and cant be more happy with them (for studio mixing of coarse - although they so pleasant to listen to music too) BTW you and your GF are so kind to each other - you so lovely- must be love 😍😍

I just received my new Yamaha Hs8 and have the same issue. The sound looks like those old dialup modems. Don't know what to do....I can minimise it by maximising the volume on the audio interface and setting the Hs8 volume to 1.5 (between one and two). I wish I'd seen this earlier. Here in Australia, we have to pre-buy it and even be in the queue for months to receive it!
Just an update: I just plugged my new "balanced" cable and the noise is gone by %90. Wasted $ 50 of my money buying unbalanced cables by mistake.

@@1eidji652 I bought a balanced cable (under 18$) and it solved my problem.
I have the HS7 with HS8S sub. When the DAC is connected via USB to the speakers via RCA>TRS cables there would be all sorts of buzzing noise. I removed the USB and switched to optical and noise is gone for good. The HS speakers have no noise on their own, its the connection that brings the noise package.
it simply has the noise when no signal cable connected.
My Hs8s are connected to a furman power conditioner. I use xlr Mogami cables to my monitor station which goes to my Apollo. I turn up the Apollo to the max so I can see the noise floor. I use the monitor station to control volume. The furman also has all other components plugged in to it. I get dead silence.

They generate ground noise WITHOUT any input plugged in, the ground connection causes the noise because of how sensitive they are
@@EJR20 I'm not sure. I'm using sockets without ground connection (it's an old house, we only have ground connection in the kitchen) and there's still a hiss in the monitors.

Haven't tried it myself, but I did work on a streaming solution 10 years ago back in the day - I think they ended up selling to Sony for PS integration, but the biggest problem with internet streaming which is never going away is latency. I have the same problem with you I wish to love those speakers when they not play music but just crazy to hear the hezz noise alll the time I have to power off the speakers need some advice. No way to put them in longer distance apart to my computer because we use it as studio setting not in a big room.
Watch evv blog. He explains it on a electrical level - they simply are designed bad and noisy - all of them! I made my silent by switching them off automatically when no input is detected (like an auto standby).

I experienced the same issue with noise hiss. But after I hooked a USB to my pc to the audio interface. It was gone.

@@headsoftech Yes, my situation in detail was i had a Yamaha MODX synthesizer. I turned on the monitors and the hissed with noise. All do. Then I hooked balanced cables from the Modx to the monitors. Still hissed. Then I plugged USB to my keyboard to my pc thats 3 prong grounded. 100% silence no more noise. The modx has a built in audio interface. So depending on your need you can buy an external audio interface. But it needs USB. Its like the ground of the pc ties all together eliminating the noise.
Just hear supporting with my views. Finally got my 2019 6 x 3.0 core iMac. I'm loving the 5k screen for editing. Thank you for the review of the mac mini with the same processor. Editing 4k on this thing isn't perfect, but it is far from pull my hair out slow like my former 5,1 Mac Pro was.
Congrats mate, sounds like a solid piece of kit and glad you didn't get suckered into buying the overpriced upgrade options to make it go fan noise city on you. One thing to be aware of is that there's rumours of a new iMac model coming out in a March event. It'll probably be a marginal update and if you got yours on discount then it's probably not worth waiting for it.

Try to fit a review/test video into your hectic schedule comparing my spec iMac against your current editing machines and title it "What Mac Is The Best Value For Commercials & Music Video Editors?". I think that would be dope and it would grab views from non tech reviewers and vloggers/youtubers who are die hard editors as well. Most video editing themed videos, tutorials, and reviews on youtube are geared toward editors who don't edit commercials and or music videos. Just a idea.

A UPS does not clean up the power source it’s just an "uninterrupted power supply ". It makes it more dirty! What you need is a power line conditioner for a clean power source.

yep, have hs5 and with no audio connection there is slight noise .
i think those have some issues. i had hs5 for years. they are super silent.
mine hissed for the first year and a half. then i got a new computer and Audio Interface. after that the hissing was gone. motherboards can cause the hissing or external audio interfaces depending on the brand.
If there is something wrong with your equipment its going to be amplified through the monitors.
After all it can only send sound from your computer equipment and if your electrical equipment has a problem then its going tp pick that up too.
In other words its telling you there is something wrong somewhere but people need to use balanced cables.

Different power cables? What? He was talking about the speakers self-noise in the beginning - meaning nothing had been connected.
I recently baught the HS7. I can confirm the hissing noise. Can't hear it during music playback but it's noticeable when no music is playing.
I used the M-Audio BX5 for ten years. They din't have that hissing noise.
I think it has to do with the amplifier of the speakers. The Yamahas have a class d amp, which is more power efficient, while the BX5s have a class A/B amp which is more energy consuming but has no hissing noise and sounds a bit warmer.
Have a look on Presonus Eris 3.5, very inexpensive monitor (200 AUD) with an amazing sound!

I bought the ugreen dual trs to 3.5mm jack but it still gives out slight hissing and the cable mentioned trs dual but it does not have second ring on the cable

Yes use Balanced Cables (TRS or XLR)
If your running everything out of one socket. You pick up frequencys from everything that's plugged into that one socket. Speakers should either be hooked up to a entirely separate socket and plug.
As well as have a power conditioner.
On top on that, you also was monitor stands, not desk risers. Monitor stands allow you to move them farther away from everything that's giving a magnetic or radio wave frequency off. If your studio is set up right. You monitors are about 1.5 meters from the wall, and still about a ft at most from your desk. Sitting at you desk, if it's a 30 inch wide desk or more should be your sweet spot for mixing and mastering in the first place.
Lastly, having all of that centered in the room everything is in. Not directly in the middle of the room. But wall centered. Meaning of your looking at one wall. It' should be centered on that wall to symmetrically bounce off frequencys in your room.

Mine had loads of hiss and was picking up radio interference. I bought balanced cables and put them on their own power supply and it stopped it all.
They are wonderful little monitors.
Studio monitors tend to hiss more than standard computer speakers due to their ability to produce higher frequencies. It also tends to diminish as they become more broken in.
I have owned HS5, HS7, Rokit KRK monitors and Genelec 8010A, and to be honest the HS5 had the least hiss overall. Maybe you got a bad set?
Also you can actually split the headphone out directly to studio monitors without using an interface / DAC. Less volume available but still an option for those that dont want to purchase an external interface.
Also balanced cables are barely necessary for noise reduction for short cable runs in a home studio environment, however you do lose ~3dBV of gain connecting an unbalanced cable to the balanced input on a studio 'monitor'.
Also please name and shame that music store that didn't let you listen or offer a refund!

Ace tips mate, I think I'm going to visit another music store when I head to the big city next week - hopefully they'll have demo units to try out. I've heard that some of them have a built in auto-mute function so at least when I need to work on things outside of video/music I can still do it at my current desk. If they don't have anything - Australia have limited brands on sale, I'll just wait until I'm a millionaire like you audio producers and can afford a dedicated music room purely for the hiss.
UPS for computers is not proper for monitors ! Problem might be exactly there
these speakers make noise with nothing else plugged in, just on their own. Its the speakers. Fools on internet keep saying theres a trick but then they fade away as always because they just talk out their ass. Everyone who owns these has the SAME NOISE. Its not WIFI or ground, etc. Its self noise from the Yamahas and how they are. They sound good in action but that self noise is a deal breaker.

plug everything on the same outlet and use balanced cable will fix the issue. This is happening due to ground wiring.
Trust me when I say this doesn't work. I'm having the same issue. I have...
a.) everything plugged into the same outlet (computer, monitors, etc)
b.) balanced to TRS cables
c.) ground loop eliminator
d.) power conditioner
e.) I have sent them back to Yamaha once already
f.) I have taken them to a local music store to try a different set up entirely, same buzz
There's just something that went wrong with these speakers one day for me. They were absolutely fine, then one day they started picking up every little sound of electricity within a 100ft radius, and I have taken every step to eliminate grounding hum in every piece of electronics I use, including all of my guitars, amps, etc. I have even moved this stuff out of the room... I mean if you can think of it, I promise you I have tried it at least once lol.
I don't think it's the grounding of other things as much as I think it's potentially something to do with the amps in these speakers picking up frequencies that they shouldn't be, which would be a manufacturing defect that Yamaha doesn't want to acknowledge it seems.
I have 120 watt high gain guitar amps sitting closer to my computer than my audio monitors, this guitar amp is concert levels of loud, by all means should pick up frequencies coming off of the hard drives/cpu of my computer, it doesn't.... but my audio monitors sitting farther away than my 120w guitar amp does? What? That doesn't make a slight bit of sense considering they make noise gates for guitar for this specific purpose. I don't need a noise gate for my guitar, but I need one for my audio monitors? On what fuckin planet? LOL

Your right
Try to clean the cables with a good cleaning solution. Might help the case and should be done every year. Otherwise can be the highs or bass are turned up too much. If all is correct maybe it might be due to a bad cable. Try another brand/ a friends cable. If still problems try another speaker. Recommend genelec overall for you to hear exactly everything for a good price.
Clean with a IPA solution. Like isopropyl alcohol. Cheap and good

Been through many monitors. Yamaha were always very hissy. Try Adams they have ribbon tweeters which I think are so much less hissy
Have had Tannoy, Yamaha, KRK, Genelec etc. Try Adam A5X or go one up and go for Adam A7X which is just brilliant. I ended up with Adam A77X but you probably don’t have the space or the need for those biggies. Also big love for Focal CMS series but they’re discontinued now.

Three prong to two prong adapter doesn’t work brother because there’s still interference from the ground prong just for being present, you gotta actually pull it out and hope you never get an electrical short, well not hope, but make sure to plug the monitor to a surge protector or a power conditioner and not directly to the outlet.
I have NO idea why no one has said this... This is entirely normal. It's the noise floor of the circuitry system and the high frequency response of the monitors. Many monitors have an audible hiss while nothing is playing. It doesn't mean there's something wrong with your monitor, or that it's not a great monitor. There might be a few monitors here and there that have very low audible hiss, but the majority of monitors are noisy when nothing is playing. Some are worse than others and granted, your hiss is quite loud, but don't make people think that Yamaha speakers are bad, it's quite the opposite.
How do you remove it? Mine happens when I have MacBook pro power plugged in.
I had the same problem with my yamaha’s and Mixing desk; Checked and got to know my grounding wasn’t working properly. My Electrician had my problem solved. I previously used a Di box as well where the noise reduced a bit but wasn’t gone completely. So it’s better to double check your grounding where your speaker is plugged is good. I hope that helps!
The YAMAHA HS5 are monitors intended for music producers who are mixing. The frequency response are flat and they are able to produce higher and lower frequencies that other regular speakers don’t produce. So for video editing you should of just bought regular Speakers. Your best bet is to sell them on eBay those monitors fly off the shelves anyways.

These are HS5 monitors, XLR/TRS cables connect the speakers to the DAC.

Vtudio Pro When people say your whispering is because you need compression. Do you use a compressor or a audio interface? or do you use USB? You can EQ after the the fact to level out your voice
Yeah I equalise my sound to the bars, it must just be that I can't hear the problem, because it doesn't sound like I'm whispering over on my end. Or maybe it's more with these videos being accessible from a worldwide audience, people just bring their own unsophisticated sense on how other people should sound like.

Why don’t you go with a passive monitor and a high quality amp. I never got hiss from passive speakers as the amp isn’t pushing the noise floor to its max when the speakers are idle. Never liked active monitors....
I'm new to audio so I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing. Which monitor and amp do you recommend? I just want something that's higher quality than my MBP and has no hiss when nothing is playing like my MBP.
@@headsoftech You don't have to go crazy, just a half decent set of two way speakers, spend some money on a decent hifi amp - even something for around $500 from JB. Audio has this law of diminshing returns. . .a buddy of mine is currently using ear speakers that cost him upwards of $6k. . . It's a rabbit hole and a half. . .
I use a basic set of JBL bookshelf speakers (18 years old) running from the headphone port, no dedicated DAC, through a pioneer surround amp that cost me about $600. . . .no hiss. . .clean and crisp. the trick is to not push the amp too hard which amplifies the noise floor of the computers signal when the volume on the machine is down low.
Not an expert, but it works, sounds good enough and doesn't have any hiss. I used to use optical out on the macpro/old MBP etc. but the lag in the amp to pick up the optical sometimes was too frustrating and it was terrible for editing. The fast respnse of the analog signal was just so much better for editing.

3.5" and internal sound card of laptop causes it. Switch to decent usb dac.. And boom gone! All stocked soundacrds are crappy fro these direct kind of connections.. I use dragonfly usb dac.. No problems...
Dude, he was talking about self-noise with nothing being connected from the estart of the vid, pay attention. Majority of cheap monitors have lousy amps (no matter the type), and so there is a certain degree of his depending on a model.
lol you can’t crank it and expect to hear nothing lol 😂 when it’s on 3 it should be really loud Yamaha HS are for studios and you want them flat in a studio but you need others to check differences.. they use the flat monitors to get clarity in all the tracks. Boring really but still that’s why.. get some KRKs you seem like a Bose KRK kinda man lol stick in a compressor / gate before it reaches the monitors lol

Shouldn't you edit your videos on a pair of average speakers in order to hear your voice as your viewers do?
Sounds sensible, the problem is there's no such thing as average speakers as they all output sound in their own limited ways. So studio monitors are the way to go as they are supposed to output all frequencies flat, so if you can get it right on them, it'll sound good on most other speakers who only output certain frequencies. Hope that makes sense.

Same here, I was very disappointed too, it looks like the only monitors which are silent are either non-powered, or very very expensive. Let me know if you come across anything worth checking out as I'm back to the drawing board myself.
