    I've had the BX5 D2's for 5 years now. It's balanced and sharp. In this comparison, even tho listeners can hear it through a mic and own speakers/headphones, seems like the D3 model is there what i've used to. HS5 really sounds flat, which isn't bad, but i'd like to carve the middle range a bit. I honestly think both of these do the job well when u get used to the sound.

      I am hesitant between, Hs5 and this M-audio monitors. But he was 100% accurate; one is for music/audio production (means when you need that honest response "flat response")
      And the other, which is M-AUDIO, is for media play back (Means when you wanting something fun and colorful like watching TV series, Netflix, party music, DJing,etc )
      But here you're talking about music production. The M-AUDIO really can't compete with the Ymh Hs5 in that field.
      I'm going for the Hs5 for that matter. But as you said "we will still need to compare our music to the other producers' on different other devices which may not necessarily give that flat response." Luvs

    It's all about knowing the sound signature of your monitors. If you know what your reference audio sounds like then you can mix to that sound signature no problem. It does not matter if you have the most expensive and flattest monitors going. If you don't get to know them intimately you'll not get the sound you require during production.

    Great review! The problem is of course, that we are all listening to this video through a myriad of different setups. So what we are hearing is probably not that accurate in terms of what we would hear with those same monitors in our own recording/listening environment. Having said that I think your conclusions were spot on. The HS5's are great monitor speakers for those looking for the most accurate mixes. The BX5's are great all-rounders. They work for mixing, although you need to factor in that they can be bass-heavy, and they sound great when used as consumer speakers for more multimedia content. I have owned both these monitors and I would lean toward the HS5's because they have a cleaner, more airy sound. They definitely are not for consuming music. The BX5's are very good all-rounders but like you, I found them very bass-heavy and somewhat muddy in the mids and highs.

      @@RUclipsTookMyNickname.WhyNot That doesn't mean the other review was wrong...or right😂. In the end, it comes down to what you prefer. Some will rather go with the flat response of the HS5 but others will hear them as being lifeless and kind of dull. It may be an odd thing to say but that is how monitors for mixing are supposed to sound. Dull and flat, because they are not "adding" anything. You are hearing the sound in as pure a form as you can get with these speakers and that allows you to mix the sound more effectively for listening on a wide range of speakers and devices. I really liked the BX5's but for my own use, I preferred the HS5's.

    • @yamahamusicians
      @yamahamusicians 2 года назад +4

      @@RUclipsTookMyNickname.WhyNot There is nothing flat about the BX5's. I used them for almost two years. There is a LOT of smoke and mirrors in the active monitor world. Manufacturers make a lot of claims but they often fail to highlight the fact that the environment you are placing the speakers in will have a huge impact on their performance. As will the equipment you are plugging the monitors into. There are a lot of variables involved, including our own hearing and the way we perceive the sounds coming from the speakers. Unless you are mixing commercially where the end result really does matter a great deal, it mostly comes down to whether YOU like the sound coming from the speakers. No one knows your own music better than you. If it sounds right and you test it on other devices and it still sounds right. Then you have nailed it! No matter if you use BX5's, HS5's, KRK's etc.👍

    • @yamahamusicians
      @yamahamusicians 2 года назад +2

      @@RUclipsTookMyNickname.WhyNot That is the biggest problem with demonstrating speakers on RUclips. It is a bit like trying to show people what an 8K tv is like when you are only viewing on a 4K or 1080P screen. Videos are still useful to give you an idea of build quality and features. And also, of course, it helps to get a variety of opinions, especially from people who have used or are still using the speakers being discussed. The only real way to know for sure though is to test the speakers in the environment in which they will be used. This is why I always buy from a store that has a good 30 day returns policy ;)

    As u call it super flat response in BX5 it means sound is more referance than in Yamaha. Anyway fact is BX5 working at lower freq response so you can hear and feel basses and work with easier. Low freq is hard to work with on headphones. So in my opinion these BX5 should help monitor every freq with GOOD HEADPHONES. I using bx8 with m audio 24/192 inteface and AKG 716 PRO for home studio.

    After listening to HS8 and BX8 Carbon I ended up with BX8s for half the price, and are top notch. Just learn you monitors and room space, and you can mix anything with them. Yamahas have enhanced mids not actually flat as per the popular myth, and produce port noise at loud volumes. I know a few producers who have sets of Yamahas(8s/5s/7s) and put out garbage mixes. So, be wise.

    If you're worried about any monitors you think might be too colorful for mixing/mastering, in addition to learning your drivers and room
    (obviously), then try using a virtual mixing console/DSP on your PC/MAC, and configure the bands as you see fir. Even before I got into music production I was heavy into audio, and with something like Voicemeeter (which I've been using for over 5 years now), you can route audio all over your computer and change up the frequencies of each stream to your heart's content.
    Case in point, when I didn't have monitors and just basic PC speakers with satellite and sub, I'd completely flatten all the output coming from my DAW and through those speakers. And if you're worried about "well how flat is actually flat", it's simple; just use whatever mixing/monitoring headphones you have and tune your speaker setup until it matches those as closely as possible. You really should be mixing with both regardless so this part almost takes care of itself haha. Small life hack I learned along the way.

    I could hear a signficant amount of resonances in the Yamaha's compared the M-Audio. The most important point with any neutral monitoring is NOT to hear resonances. The Yamaha's are not neutral in this way judging from the sound in this video, and that's saying something significant because I didn't think I would ever be able to hear the resonances of a reportedly decent monitor via RUclips !
    Obviously the Yamahas are way over-rated for a flat, neutral response to mix-down on. Aside from this video I have heard these in quiet studios and spent time comparing the Yamaha's with several other monitors. Save your money, you'll never get an accurate mix out of the Yamaha's as you can with monitors that in fact cost less which have less discernable resonances. It's actually easier to correct for poorly balanced frequency response either electronically and/or by room placements and dampening. It's almost impossible to correct for inherently poor speaker designs where resonances are strong. A good pair of studio monitors or headphones will have minimum resonances first and foremost, then a good flat amplitude
    response over frequency. Now for colored speakers you love the sound of in some way, unique resonances play an important part in that, again first and foremost, then uneven amplitudes over frequency such as a stronger bass response may add to the experience. For people new to this, train your ears to first listen for resonance, not frequency response.

      Disagree completely. You hear more sounds from the Yamaha that you just don't hear from the M-Audio, especially in the mid range, such as the pop music test at 1:48. Also at the hip hop beat 2:48 you can clearly hear the M-Audio has boosted bass that is drowning out the other sounds. The M-Audio might sound better to you because it's equalized to your liking, I just don't think you should use the word "reference" to describe it because that's definitely not what it is if certain frequencies are not being reliably reproduced.

    One drawback on the M Audio is that they get hot and can shut down after a few hours automatically apparently, which is not the best.

      I haven't experienced this personally but that's crazy and definitely not fit for professional use if true.

      @@grantedgeek Apparently the guy was running them at 75% constant for over 3 hours at a party and they shut down due to heat. Amazon reviewer. I’ve had a couple of pairs of these but never ran them at that level for more than 5 minutes due to noise complaint so I could not verify that statement but I can say the time I had these I enjoyed them very much indeed. I ran them at 50% each for sometime which was loud enough and never had a problem.

      true i have the BX8 and its true, they get really hot sometimes so i cant even touch the back. Then i shut them off myself for a while. (only on hot days) I will install bigger heatsinks soon and install little be quiet or noctua fans.

    both are great, i do agree the M-Audio sounds more fun and is better if you like making things like beats/pop/dance music… but the yamaha’s have their place in sounding so bland that if you make it sound good on yamahas, 99% of the time they sound good everywhere else.
    based on what i hear from many hip-hop producers, the producers with yamaha speakers generally have far better mixes. just an observation

    Igot BX8 D2 for very cheap. Right now i listen to them on a 24 bit dac from surfans. I can say the sound is really good and the bass extreme. I think they are a bit flat, not as analytic as the JBL 305P. BUT .... i listen on cheap cables. This makes a huge difference. I will write a comment again, when i swapped out all cables and when i have an good audio interface. I will buy the M Audio Air. And then i will do some nice tests.

    Why would you sacrifice more clean bass and pay 100$ more? Sounds plain stupid. I own BX8 so I must be biased. Basically I spent the same amount of money I would on HS5 on BX8 and have some headroom. Two aspects many forget about is the size of the room (for most cases BX5 or HS5 are really sufficient because we almost never crank up the volume to 100%) and how often music makers use headphones - it's probably some 80% of the time unless you work with a band. Great review - concise and to the point.

  • @shockwavestudiosproduction4930

    The Hs5 sound cleaner, the bx5 sound like you want bass on the low end. Only hs8 will give you that good bass
    You have to use eq and compression when making music anyway.

    Yamaha Sounds bad. But if you make your mix sound good on a Yamaha it will sound good anywhere. But some people are saying that Yamaha sounds good because of the colective . And because of that, the reviews are bias for the Yamaha 😢

    Put some acoustic instruments through these speakers. All of this synthesized crap shows very little compared to what an acoustic instrument could show. Put an acoustic guitar through them, put an acoustic bass through them, put a violin through them. All of these will show much more than some canned synthesized junk. At least we all know what these acoustic instruments sound like. Who the heck knows what those synthesized instruments were tuned to sound like. If anything the Yamahas sound thin and like they color the high end.
