  • Legendary pioneer rapper Kurtis Blow spoke with VladTV about witnessing the start of hip-hop in New York, and how James Brown and other artists of the 60s and 70s were heavy influencers of the genre. He also detailed how he and his friends would go through their mother's record stash in the 70s to search out specific funk songs to use for their b-boy songs.
    During the conversation Kurtis also spoke about how DJs were initially the focal point of hip-hop, adding that emcees were a "dime a dozen" during this time. It wasn't until Grandmaster Flash started developing modern hip-hop beats by extending the break and playing it on repeat for five minutes.
    Check out more of what he had to say in the above clip, including how he's trying to unite hip-hop churches around the world.

    This just goes to show how important James Brown was to the creation and foundation of hip-hop music and culture. Dude was bigger than Elvis and inspired generations of artists including giants like Michael Jackson and Prince. Says a lot about the man and his music!

    Jamaicans claim that reggae and dancehall music birthed hip-hop music yet when I listen to old school hip-hop songs from the the late 1970s and 1980s I hear the Disco, Soul, and Funk influence.

      The early record labels wanted a watered down disco/funk party records with rapping not to be mistaken for the real hip hop of the time which was based around the break beats which were lifted from all genres of music as long as it had a hard beat..

    • @georgeorwell3532
      @georgeorwell3532 4 года назад +5

      I don't think any Jamaican claimed reggae and dancehall birthed it. Only a handful of Jamaican immigrants and Jamaican sound system culture played a part in its early development.

      Blacks in America were always rhyming way before hip hop existed. It was called “The Dozens” like how in the show “The Jeffersons” when George and Helen would snap on each other.

      DJing\toasting
      apping was first put on a record by a Jamaican DJing\toaster (Jamaican rapping) called U Roy way back in the late 60's. The only difference with Americans rap is the accent. Kool Herc who was born in Jamaica was raised in New York brought this style of Jamaican DJing\toasting to the Bronx. So Hip Hop today was very much influenced by Jamaican DJing\toasters.
      I have listened to early Hip Hop from it's humble beginnings and many rapping styles\influences from KRS1, Busta Rhymes, Chubb Rock, Leaders Of The New School, Tribe Called Quest, Heavy D, Special Ed, Lords Of The Underground, Poor Righteous Teachers, Da Bush Babies, Wreckx N Effect, Smiff N Wessun etc. I hear in many of these early Hip Hop rappers style Jamaican influence for sure.

    One of the most legendary legends of all time. Out of all the rappers, Kurtis Blow is at the top of the list of rappers I respect the most. Not only did he pioneer Hip-Hop and it's 3 different forms in the 80s (Disco Rap, Electro-funk Hip-Hop and Mid-School), he pioneered the music industry by creating the first looped sample.
    "Back by Popular Demand" is one of my favourite albums ever.
    Thank you for making music, Kurtis, and your contribution to REAL Hip-Hop music. 🙏
