Kurtis Blow: Prince Donated $90k for Martin Luther King Tribute Video

  • Prince's generosity was felt by a lot of artists before his untimely passing earlier this year, and pioneer rap legend Kurtis Blow spoke to VladTV about the late singer's generous gift to him.
Kurtis explained that he was asked by Martin Luther King Jr.'s son to write a song about his father, which he later titled "King Holiday," and it featured a host of up and coming artists like Whitney Houston, Run DMC, and more. While the song was a "We Are The World" for a younger generation, Kurtis revealed that he didn't have the money to do the video, and Prince stepped in to help. The Harlem rapper told VladTV that Prince gave him $90,000 to do the video, and Kurtis pointed out that he wasn't even on the song.
During the conversation Kurtis spoke about fighting to own some of his catalogs, and he also sends a warning to young artists about the importance of owning all of their publishing and music. Check out more of what he had to say in the above clip.

Martin Luther King is so fundamental to humanity, it doesn't surprise me Prince would help to honour him. Great story Kurtis!

Not only that 4 all those years he is telling all of us to control our music and publishing. He wants us all 2 control our masters. RIP Prince!

Why, I never knew Blow produced King Holiday.
    Classic certified Classic.
However, Prince has given several hundred million that Prince would never even mention.
I found that out when I went to Minneapolis and met some ppl that knew a lot about Prince.
Prince and MJ had given away more bread than some entertainers will ever earn throughout their career.
    Great people those two.

It is remarkable to me that Kurtis threw out there that he didn't have the opportunity to pay Prince back for financially backing his video. It sounds like Prince did it out of the kindness of his heart, not for a business deal. I believe Prince would have been hurt, maybe even offended, by Kurtis even attempting to "pay him back" for what he did. Although the King Holiday wasn't a commercial hit, it was done with heart, brought good people together and is undeniably a positive footnote in Black Music ( Rap ) and Black History.

Too bad so many of these major artists did not control the business side of their music, which cuts them out of their retirement (royalties, etc.). They weren't informed, and are now suffering the consequences as they advance in years. YOUNG PEOPLE getting into the industry now, learn from this generation, so you don't repeat their mistakes. Prince was right! - Take time to learn the business; know what deal/contract you are signing. It's your life, now and tomorrow.
