Kurtis Blow should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame
Here's a petition for just that...
www.change.org/p/rock-roll-hall-of-fame-induct-kurtis-blow-into-the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-b4e90fbb-0a7a-4dbc-b472-fc1709a93148?recruiter=371993904&
@@TheFoundationhiphop have you ever meet Kurtis blow or seen Kurtis blow live??
@@mine2613 yes, I've met him 3 or 4 times, and I saw him live twice in the early 80s, then my group opened a show for him in 88, so I saw his show up close..
Rock n Roll Hall of Fame should be kurtis blow, kid n play, dana dane, ll cool j, kool moe dee, kwame, dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince, big daddy kane, mc hammer, whodini, fat boys, heavy d and the boyz, busy bee, utfo, sugarhill gang, lovebug starski. they are true all pioneer and legends of hip hop music.
4 Sure K.B
This man is so, so, SO influential in the history of rap music. He broke so many barriers, a lot of them low-key in memory but not in stature. The dude is one of the Kings in this rap game.
When I 1st started rapping in the 80's I liked to refer to Kurtis Blow as Uncle Kurt as a sign of respect.
My favorite Christmas gift December 1980 was the Kurtis Blow Album with "The Breaks" and "Christmas Rappin'! Thanks for the lesson, JayQuan!
Kurtis blow is the king of Rap music much respect.
You cant understand how the "breaks" shook the west coast... this one record stayed in HEAVY ROTATION IN CLUBS , HOUSE PARTIES AND RADIO (KDAY & KGFJ) FOR MONTHS!!!. REAL L.A. HIP HOP HEADS GIVE KURTIS BLOW HIS PROPS.
Kurtis Blow was The Man in Hip-Hop in The Early Day's.He set The Tone for The Preface of a Rapper/MC.
I grew up on party rap. Still love it today and my kids love it too, especially Kurtis Blow. Way Out West was my jam. His arrangements were fantastic and I loved those little piano parts on many of his songs. Long live The King.
Thanks for this, I remember all the kids rapping and dancing to "That's the breaks that's the breaks" and not yet knowing or having any idea of how big hip hop would get. I loved "AJ" and I have a problem with today's Artists proclaiming how great they are and taking and getting credit for a lot of things hip hop while refusing to respect the Foundation. I respect what you do to let the World know where they got it from; your lessons are Awesome, I stay glued to them from Start to Finish.
Thank You!!
Thank you so much Jayquan for this foundation. Kurtis Blow made a huge impact on the rap game. Many of today's artists probably don't realize his impact. #Salute
My Brother Michael back in the days brought Curtis flow over midtown as he was called back in Uptown. Jay Quan you are a superb commentator and producer of quality content. Thank you ..
The K-U-R-T-I-S 1st of the best I must confess.
The BLO and the W
Thanks man we needed to know more about Kurtis!yep I'm now forty five and my dad brought These are the breaks and off the wall Michael Jackson from Pathmark food market they also sold toys and albums I'll never forget that wait didn't RunDmc also had okay you mention it hard times before
The one uptown Bx in co-op city ?
He should have an episode of Unsung
Definitely!!
Eventually....he definitely deserves to.
I also think that Kurtis Blow hasn't received his just due because he came out just before the Explosion of Hip hop: RUN DMC, LL, JUICE CREW, BIG DADDY KANE, RAKIM, and others from the Golden Age of Hip hop; he was the forerunner and the blueprint of today's Rap Star, and True TrailBlazers never get their Just Due; just my opinion.
I remember I was in Chicago visiting my grandfather and I was always looking at the Kurtis Blow records with those elements of the Chicago skyline on the sticker. Then I heard my uncle say "to the girl in green don't be so mean...". I thought about what that meant over and over. I had no idea. Then I heard the song. And that is how I was introduced to what would become hip-hop and rap music. Thanks for the memories Jayquan.
Excellent lesson, Kurtis was the 1st superstar rapper and get a major label deal with the help of rush management Russell Simmons,I love all his albums, the king of rap
I could listen to you kick knowledge for 4 hours man dont worry about the length of the videos the longer the better for me! Love the content, keep it up, OG!!
DØLØ thank you brother! Much appreciated!!
Me too
Christmas rappin is the holiday party starter! That intro is classic. The rhymes flow and those background chants are dope.
kurtis Blow sempre um Mestre do Rap aqui no Brasil , meu primeiro disco foi Baskebol , adoro Mr Blow ! Grande Artista do Rap Old School ...Parabéns pela Matéria um grande Artista .
Kurtis Blow Forever.
Parabéns !!!
Thank You friends
Valeu !!!
Curtis BLow...the King of the Kings!! Another gem by the Foundation. I love this channel.
100
Kurtis deserves much more props!
The Best Rap History channel. Here in Chile "The Breaks" was a party song very played in the early 80s (Top, Scala discoteques) 😉
Thank You. Huge dance hit here too
@@TheFoundationhiphop Cool. I wanna know your impression about a fact: *Was RHCP's Anthony Kiedis "the first Caucasian full-time rapper* (but No Hip hop, instead in a Punk Funk mode) *before Beasties?* ="Beastie Boys 1st Rap singles were in 1985, Red Hot Chili Peppers demo with 100% songs rappin by Anthony..1983 (and in L.A.) 😲
Was unaware of Kurt Blow and Just Ice's feud, I LOVE that you are discursive and your presentations are LOADED with INTERESTING factoids. Tyvm.
Thank you for listening/looking!

They were on Unsung a few years back....they definitely are legends....
Yeah
These episodes are like movies. TAke my time to listen, imagine and enjoy. Great work. Respect!
Thank you. Wow...
thank you jayquan, i love your breakdowns of the history of rap. i grew up with rap and it's good to have someone like you that gets into the history. keep up the great work i enjoy you work.
Fam you did it again, another peice to the puzzle... Don't make us wait to Long for part 2... Super SALUTES to Kurtis Blow! Wishing him a speedy recovery...
Chicago Englewood On Board. Great Lesson. I Was There!! Dead On...Can’t Wait For Part 2. One Love.
thanks for this 1 JayQuan, this couldn't have been done any better! peace
Thank you!
Dope breakdown.
Thanks bro
Great job, Jayquan! The Breaks was one of the first records in my crates back in the day! Kurtis Blow was definitely a hip-hop originator! PEACE!
Super dope lesson!! Unfortunately, I never saw him live, but his songs were always in heavy rotation at the summer Block party’s in DC!!
Another great and educational video, I never considered how important Curtis Blow was his truly the blueprint of a rap solo superstar, fantastic education keep up the good work brother 👍🏿
NICE!!! AND EVEN THOUGH IM STILL WAITIN HARD FOR THAT WHODINI LESSON, I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND DOING KURTIS BLOW'S...ITS WELL DESERVED, RELEVANT, AND NECCESSARY TO SHOW HIM THAT LOVE NOW!!! MUCH RESPECT JAY!!!
I work at LAX. Legit the ONLY time I was starstruck meeting someone at my job..
I was like, dam...this is a pioneer of the culture I've lived for over 30 years...
Dope!
thank you for doing one on the great kurtis blow. he is my favorite rapper of all time.
Dude this was great, i multi-task with these playing. Kurt and Spoonie G never get spoken on but i think its mainly because they were early rappers that just fell through the cracks, kinda like how the early NBA generations aren't spoken on. (Before Jordan, before Magic)
Been looking forward to this one. Kurtis Blow is a legend
Yes he is
Excellent! I bought two copies of every KB record throughout the 80s even though some later songs were not the best :) But I always bought them out of respect.
Love Kurtis Blow thanks The Blueprint.
Listening to 'Rappin Blow' I can definitely hear the influence of Dj Hollywood and Eddie Cheeba
100 percent!
@@TheFoundationhiphop Jay Quan will you cover Heavy D and the Boyz, Whodini, The Skinny Boys, Fat Boys, Salt and Peppa, MC Lyte, Naughty by Nature, Father MC,
We need a Foundation Lesson on Eddie Cheeba..." Cheeba, Cheeba, CHEEBA! KBlow is definitely the FIRST rap superstar, but believe me Eddie Cheeba was just as big, just not with worldwide fame, but coming up in the Bronx, Cheeba was the man! He had his own radio show on Saturday mornings about 10am on 90 something on the radio dial.
Just discovering all of this excellent history. Really appreciating it.
another dope lesson 👌👌👌 we fux with you down here in the great state of texas
Respect brother. Much appreciated here in VA!
yes we do!
Yup
Once again nothing but the best 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏😊
Thank you for looking!!!!
JayQuan truly outstanding lesson thank you Brother Peace
Thank you for looking. Much respect!
I remember Christmas in Hollis every year RunDMC I rarely remember Christmas Rappin after Christmas in Hollis came out sorry!but the Breaks played heavy but this is Philly radio I'm talking
Interesting....I hear both several times every holiday. Could be a regional thing like you said..
Bro I'm 30 my era was the 2000s and the early to mid 2010s..that being said I love hip hop always trying to find out more about the history and this video as well as the other lessons and breakdowns are much appreciated keep bringing these lessons the world needs to know more about this prolific Black American music we know as hip hop 🙏🏿🙏🏿
Good video. I totally agree with you. GREAT CHANELL
Thank You !!
KING KURTIS!!! THE HOMIE!!!
I’m 22 and an aspiring emcee and I’m telling you this is needed. Definitely not being taught to my generation
Thank you for looking!
You did great, I would love to see an episode on Dj Hollywood!!
Thank you again JayQ for this Lesson, again great job and please continue The Foundation Lessons!
Kurtis "Rappin" Blow was not so one of my favorite MC back then, but he diffidently deserve recognition in Hip Hop. Especially also when Kurtis talks about the Beginning of Hip Hop from the 70's, Kurtis knows and he got The Breaks. My favorite Kurtis album was "America" and still is, great production!
Looking future forward for the Grandmixer D.ST. & Afrika Bambaataa Lesson!
100-FAMILY
HATS DOWN TO THE GREATEST.THANK YOU.
As always your lessons are top notch. Looking forward to the 2nd half
Thanks for looking!
KURTIS “THE BLUEPRINT OF RAP”BLOW 4EVA THE KING 👑!!!!!Once Again My Kin, You Did It!!! It’s Lit....Lol. Good L👀Ks Pointing☝🏿Out Kurtis Blow Starting Singing Before Drake....You Nailed It.
Respect bro!
Yes
I love your videos, they are always full of information and are a great way to honor the great hip hop/Rap artists of the '70s and '80s. Keep doing what you do.
Thank you for looking. Respect...
Thank you for putting this together!
I knew about a few Kurtis Blow song samples that became big parts of big hit records from "If I Ruled The World", "AJ Scratch", and "Hard Times". But I had no idea that Tracey Lee's 1997 hit record - The Theme (It's Party Time) came from Kurtis too: 57:26
That's was a DC nod by Tracey as well...
Party time came out roughly if can remember...1983....spring , early summer,if can remember.
Shout to Bernard Edwards who Larry Smith must have looked up to . . . and shout to Larry Smith!
All Time All world! Kurtis Blow
The king of rap
good job for putting this and other kurtis blow video back up.
I remember having Crash Crew album and they were all on the cover on dirt bikes.
Cold Crush bit that Album Cover later....
Alright alright alright alright
Jayquan you have the most complete, in depth coverage ANYWHERE on the history of rap/ hip hop.I love listening to them when I go on a hour+ drive. They make my journey much less tedious.I haven't watched all the lessons so I don't know if you did a lesson on SugarHill records or on Sylvia Robinson or Bobby Robinson but I think that would be interesting.I remember her singing " Pillow Talk" on Soul Train.Another job well done with this episode.
Another great video man 👏
Man,I love all that you do.You are literally THE gatekeeper.
keep the hip hop spirit alive jay thanks for the infomative lessons
I think his greatest overall album from start to finish is EgoTrip. It is nearly impossible to find it on CD.
I have to agree. Ego Trip is perfect...
Man I thought I was the only one that caught the Beef with Kurtis and Just -Ice . I remember Just- Ice went at him hard on Cold Getting dumb 2 and another track on Just-Ice 2nd album. Please follow up with this brother. I always wanted to know what spark that beef. Keep up the great work !!!!
Enjoyed the show Bro thanks!
Thank you bro
Awesome lesson 👍 true legend paved the way
Excellent video.
Very very interesting points my brother🤜🤛
This video is very important
Need to be on netflix
I agree
I would watch and contribute!
Oh man. You reminded of the song AJ. When it came out I was too young to know who sung it. I remembe singing "Aaaa Jayyyy...Aaaa Jay a a". And I remember the two toned AJ jeans. Not sure if they go hand in hand but they both were out around the same time.
They dont go hand in hand, but were definitely both popular in the mid 80s...
Kurtis and LL get understated. They BOTH were the prototypes for solo "superstar" mc's (in their respective careers) in their first 3-4 yrs.
I believe LL is recognized as such
@@TheFoundationhiphop LL rarely ( meaning never) gets mentioned in anyone's top 5. Now, would Ice-T be the west coast equivalent of Kurtis Blow?
@@7Wallstreet they need to.adjust their top 5. That's a good analogy concering Ice T. I would say yes...

TY🙏🏽 I saw 1st Kurtis Blow, Sugar Hill Gang, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes & James Brown at the Apollo in 1978 or 79 (I was lil🤷🏽♀️) …. “Oh What A Night,” that was my 1st memorable 🔥concert & I could see then that KB was definitely a Super Star
My mom said “before TuPac… Kurtis Blow was raps very 1st Sex Symbol & all around entertainers bc he break danced & could act too aside fm his production behind the scenes!
Fast forward to 2019, the last x I saw KB was in BK at the old school concert EPMD had… KB in all white, did his raps & blew my mind when he started breaking! Talk about the King Kurtis Blow 😍
Part of the bass is taken from Kool and the Gangs Ladies Night
Jayquan you should have teach this new generation how rap artist like Kurtis Blow have broken ground. See before social media Kurtis was first to sing to a record label and first to went platinum.
I had Christmas rappin on 12" single and the full lp self titled
I like when you go off topic Because this is all new to me I'm an 80s baby 86 stand up LoL My reference of 80s hip hop was LL Cool J and Run DMC Crush Groove and Beat Street movies
Thank you
DO THE DO...Ohhh My Goodness...I was ALWAYS WONDERING from where them drums came! What's that classic old school "for the Radio" megamix with the James Brown pieces in it; and them drums behind: "...Are You Ready For Some Supa Dynamite Soul?"...LOL!!! Wowzers...they usually play it now when like the radio plays all old school hip hop from the 80s in the summer for like July 4 and all that!
Double Dee & Steinski
Damn I learned a lot about Kurtis Blow some of them song I remember bro !! Keep this hip hop knowledge going
Peace bro. Thanks for looking
8 million stories was definitely a hit real like the message
Today's the first time I caught this Lesson, funny how much of our recent conversation is interwoven in here... excellent as usual my bro... respect to the original "King Of Rap" Kurtis Blow... I'm about to listen to pt2 wondering if you're gonna talk about the slang contained in his name 😎...
I'm feeling ur docs here in da Chi. Dis shit just take me back to the essence I miss dat energy!
jay I love this very first part of rap hip hop was in it's emberonic stage Kingston the 3rd sugar Hill gang spoony G and Kurtis blow I have been a strong fan of hip hop then from that stage to the run dmc era and definitely the Eric b and Rakim big Daddy Kane and so on these young cats have to go back and take notes from your lessons I enjoy just taking the train to work and just put my headphones and listen to your lessons luv it 👍

Mase used day dreaming his version was stay scheming
You should of included or I hope you include the collaboration with Run DMC "8million Stories"
Part 2
Grandpa kurtis!
No doubt. He was not one to need shine on the music videos. Seems pretty humble.
Q won the DJ battle in the movie Juice with "Pump Me Up" 😂
Lol...the worst recorded "hip hop" scenes ever in a movie
