I like you dude, but you complain so much. The game is changing. Get on board, because it’s getting hard to watch you complain about literally everything. Some are broken, but there’s always been broken commanders. I’m down for some good fair magic, but the creep isn’t stopping. I’ve started feeling the “ick” on your videos, and I don’t want to stop watching you.

I agree! Been watching him from the beginning! But here lately all he does is complain about Wizards (which is sometimes warranted, but he does it all the time now), complain about every new set!, and complain literally about every card that looks fun! I just want him to focus on budget deck building! That’s what I fell in love with.

There are definitely times when I do like Ward. As I've whined, I played in a group where basically everyone else took out Commanders immediately. It didn't matter how integral they were to the deck's game plan, or how powerful they were, when compared to other creatures in play; if they were on the field, and providing anything more than a deck's color identity, they were going to get targeted, and as someone who isn't big into Green, it didn't take too long for that command tax to push them back into the CZ permanently, as they just became too expensive to play. If I'm running a 6-drop Commander, I don't want it to immediately become an 8-drop, that I now need to play again, because now I can't afford to play it AND something else that benefits from it actually being in play. It might definitely just speak I'll of my deck-building prowess, which I admit is not my greatest skill, but I guess I appreciate knowing that I might be able to play my Commander, WITH THOSE PEOPLE, and it wouldn't just vanish in a targeted overreaction. The fact that some Warded cards like this ARE Green does annoy me; Green can ramp, and despite the hate of Simic "it draws and it ramps", it's rare to hear anyone ever complain "all Green does is ramp", which I'd a lot of its identity.

  • @BobbyHollingshead

I think the REAL problem you have is the insane power creep over the past few years... It's causing some of the new Legendary creatures to be so strong, that they are effectively "pushing out" past commanders that a lot of ppl have spent years building decks around.

Exactly! I don't mind Voja at all, although I have no intention of playing it myself. I think it's the perfect example of what a genuine boss creature commander should be. High power, difficult to get rid of, and some form of resource/advantage generation. I genuine big scary creatur that gives off the energy of a final boss for a tribal strategy. It's just WAYY too cheap! I'd probably have given it 8 mana, most cause it's green, it can afford it. If it didn't have green, 7 would be fine, but a powercreeped card like this in green should be 8. 9 I think is a bit much, but 8 would suit it fine

The thing that I don't understand about the commanders that have the potential to be unfun to play against (Eriette, Judith, Delney, etc.) is that why don't you just exclude the unfun cards?
"Judith can whipe the entire board every turn! >:("
"Don't add cards that can wipe the entire board every turn"
"Eriette can steal players lands and lock them out of the game!"
"Don't steal other players lands then."
"Stella Lee can go infinite with anything"
"Don't add those cards. Why does izzet alway's need to storm? There are other strategies"
Also, I feel like generic commands just open the door to wild ideas and build potential. (Stella Lee, Ghired, Felix, etc.) Why not build Ghired as an aura/equipment commands to duplicates Rocks from Toggo, Junk tokens from Dogmeat and Settlements from Preston Garvey. Heck, Three Dog and the new feather can create aura tokens attached to your creatures that you could then tap to double up on them.

I think this idea that white is the weakest color is kind of damaging cause they keep doing pushed white cards when it's already the most overall strongest color in the game, it's got the best removal, decent card draw now, stax effects, best protection and people really underestimate the overall strength of this color for some reason.

As someone who religiously plays white, its more accurate to describe the color's biggest flaw being not able to close out games. Sure you have stax effects that stop your opponent, but its still going to take you precious turn cycles to get enough power to kill the table and thats not even mentioning the time your opponents get to out your things.

    • @carterharris334

  • @DemonOfMyMind
    @DemonOfMyMind 4 месяца назад +4

Judith, Carnage Connoisseur is one I considered building around. I don't think "Wrath tribal" is the way to go with it. You absolutely abuse her ability to wrath easily but the second ability is how you close out the game. So I'd keep a lower more reasonable amount of removal for a control deck then build to an army to quickly close out the game.
Gives me an excuse to run other cards I really enjoy in Rakdos to keep redundancy in the deck fairly high so even if she gets removed the game plan will still flourish. Pestilent Spirit and Sedgemoor Witch are fairly close to what she does. Plus I can play Lightning bolt in commander which I'm always a fan of doing.
You don't like it? I can see why. Personally I don't see an issue with these types of cards. I think people need to run more interaction. If you're running a creature deck you need to have ways to break through this level of removal. In my opinion you should build your deck like you're always going to be arch enemy. But perhaps I think too much like a spike.

I am amongst Alot of people that went from standard to commander because commander allows bigger groups of non competitive players to feel as if they can make a deck that doesn't require hundreds of dollars to make, or to make a deck with strategies that aren't supported enough to be competitive. It's already becoming too punishing for that. it's hard to just be punished every game because you got to still follow a meta, the cards you need for your commander, are 50 something dollars each, or there isn't enough support for your commander. You would be welcome anytime to play with my small group of friends who play similarly, we will all be allowed to have fun.

The games tend to be boom or bust for the deck with no in between and that’s just not my play style personally.

I think even casual players should be familiar with cedh commanders because if you see someone like Judith or Stella or to name a few one not on the list, Urza Lord High Artificer, K'rrik or Yuriko, then you know it's very likely at the very least playing with strong combos if not infinite/Win-on-the-spot combos.
Now I'm not saying casual commander players should engage with cedh but they should know the quick giveaways of a 9-10 deck immediately to just not play that table since it would save everyone some time and drama to tell a player 'We know what you're about to do, we don't play like that in this table so feel free to play something else or pass on this one'

I built bonny pall as a control mill deck that either wins with an overrun ability or milling itself out and winning with Jace/Thoracle. I don't have infinite combos in it but using the landfall synergy I can exploit hedron crab to mill myself out quickly. In that respect, it isn't a generic simic commander, but in the end its how you build the deck.

I have to say that every time you talk about Judith you focus on the deathtouch/lifelink effect. While it is the most broken effect, it just isnt true that you HAVE to play Judith that way. I have seen many people, and I myself, play Judith spellsling/burn, using her second ability, which you always overlook. With that spellsling deck you focus on draw and summon imps while doing so, then also play cards that allow you to sacrifice your creatures (your imps) and cards that give you benefits when your creatures die. Then of course, you play boardwipe cards but barely any. This is a really good way to play Judith and it feels a lot better for everyone than playing her full boardwipes.

    • @mibbzx1493

Very true, i built her as a traditional spellslinger deck and shes not even toxic to me. And she still requires setup to play since shes not doing anything the turn you cast her

@andytheindividual3862 I hear this rationale for why active-style Commanders should be trivial to remove, and always find myself thinking the same thing.
Do the pilots playing U/W/B just think no one should play decks that synergize powerfully with having their Commander on the field?
Pilots of reactive decks insist that any Commander that isn’t effortless to eliminate with Spot Removal is “broken” or “power creeped,” so if that’s the case, how is this idea of properly functioning EDH (According to Counter-Removal Pile pilots) different from these Commanders just not being played in the first place?
It’s really not uncommon to run into 3 decks doing the 12 Spot Removal 5-8 Wipe Formula at once anymore, Yanno?
If not Ward or Hexproof, what alternative is there to your 6 CMC Commander getting killed the instant it leaves the CZ every single time?
I really dislike the answer I’ve found. (Shut off Interaction entirely with cards like City of Solitude, Hall of Gemstone, Defense Web), or drain the mana away from the reactive decks during combat with cards like Nature’s Will and its clones, then pop off in postcombat, but what else am I supposed to do?
It seems to me that every game where enough Removal gets drawn to pull the teeth of active Commanders and wipe away every built-up board-state just bogs down into interminable Who Can Find More Card Draw and Rebuild Fast Enough to Kill the Reactives Ahead of Thoracle.

I disagree a lot on Gitrog. Sure you make the valid point on it’s a high upside commander that can end the game when it hits the field, but I think you‘re really overselling it. Sure Wall of Blood is nasty and green and black have a lot of tutors, but you can respond to the combat damage trigger, you can block Gitrog, and I think the most important part is that we have a lot of effects that punish drawing cards and can prevent damage, it also isn’t crazy to think by Turn 3, 4, or 5, some players could have an even scarier boardstate.

    • @EM10gamer
      @EM10gamer 4 месяца назад +1

@@gemkid85 I think you entirely misunderstand. It‘s not AN answer it‘s SEVERAL. Gitrog has to clear quite a few hurdles to even get the interaction Mitch was talking about.1.) You pay a lot of life to Wall of Blood if that‘s the route you‘re going to take, 2.) Gitrog actually has to DO combat damage to a PLAYER (can’t hit a planeswalker) 3.) you have to saddle the sacrifice target, meaning the saddle target has to be untapped, plus you’ll have to tap it, meaning you can’t swing with that massive creature 4.) even IF Gitrog can connect, you can interact with it or the sac target before it happens 5.) the sac target with massive power has to A.) be something you‘ve drawn or tutored for B.) Resolve C.) Stick around an entire turn cycle and be on the battlefield when to saddle then subsequently get sacrificed D.) Have massive power for something played on about T3-T4 AND E.) Cannot have too adverse of a negative effect BECAUSE it has to stick around to be sacrificed (look at Phyrexian Soulgorger for example, if you aren’t careful, you may have to sacrifice it before Gitrog ever hits the field). Also like, congrats if you can Natural Order to cheat out a Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant or Worldspine Wurm or something and sacrifice it to Gitrog on T4, but like…any green Deck can do that, any GOLGARI deck can do that, and at that point why you even bother with Gitrog when you can just like…win or something? You have a 15/15 Wurm or a couple of creatures backed by a 12/12 dino you could be attacking with. 6.) If none of that is enough, seriously think about it. What are you more scared of, this? Or Minsc and Boo? What about Kaalia of the Vast? Yuriko? Winota? Lathril? Here‘s the kicker, the all of these are cheaper to cast, not to mention Kaalia is just an attack trigger. Look at Voja, who DOES cost the same. It‘s more aggressive, doesn’t rely on a niche mechanic, doesn’t need to even meet the „combat damage to a player“ condition. I think Gitrog is good, don’t get me wrong, but like…I think many of Mitch‘s points about Gitrog (and also Vihaan for that matter) are just...bad. This goes beyond „Dies to Removal“, it‘s just a 6/5 for 5. It can do scary things, sure, but there are plenty of scary 5 drop commanders. Not to mention 4 or 5 drops in the 99. It‘s nice to see more aggressive Golgari commanders for a change that aren’t just graveyard this or that or death triggers on a stick.

I disagree on Judith. You can create a really cool aristocrats deck with the second option, creating lots of imps after casting cheap spells (the best build is using spells with draw, like Rites of the Village or a simple Renegade Tactics) and junk burns as single target removals (Zap for example). It's really cool and not broken if you don't work on the 1 mana board wipes that she makes possible.

Sounds like there’s not a lot of things that you DO like in magic then. Don’t like games that are too long, don’t like games that are too short, don’t like doubling effects, don’t like control strategies, don’t like tribal…
Many of these could be solved if you don’t build them the easy way/“optimized way”. With Bonnie Pall you could go for land creatures and land animation instead of the typical “simic go brrr”. Judith could focus more on the imps instead of the first ability. Gitrog could be a death trigger deck, using creatures with death triggers to saddle it instead of just trying to go for max card draw.
I don’t remember who said it, but some game designer said “players will optimize the fun out of any game or mechanic”…sometimes you have to be aware of this and actively go against the grain and there is still fun to be had.
