    One thing I’m really happy about with my SNES is that I found it nearly complete-in-box for around $170. The seller, a guy who runs a retro game store I visit regularly, said he lowered the price because it was missing a few things. All that was missing was one of two controllers and a manual. The console, cords, and a copy of Super Mario World were all in the box. On top of it all, the box was in great condition! Definitely one of my favorite parts of my collection so far.

    I realized my Philips CRT TV had a component input, so I ordered the HD Retrovision YPbPr component cables for SNES and man, oh, man is it a phenomenal bump in image quality. It's leaps and bounds. Maybe one day I'll get into RGB, but for how this is pretty great.

    Didn't know how easy it was to make Super Famicom games work on a SNES!!! Just want to thank you as your bird seeds lead to a game I didn't know about Castlevania: Dracula X on the SNES. Been really enjoying playing that game on my SNES! I remember my SEGA buddy saying, "So dumb it jumped from Part 4 to Part 10!" back in the day. That statement made me not buy it right then and there & i just forgot about it. So glade I get to enjoy it all these years later!

In terms of SNES value vs. price, I've yet to find a more solid SNES game than SmartBall that you can still get for 5 bucks - that Sony logo keeps people from realizing it was by the Pokemon developer!

    Great video RetroBird. I've been binge watching and despite the ease and convenience of emulation you got me excited to try collecting some original hardware. I just snagged a SNES on eBay today, and yes, I had to check every auction for the serial number for the past few weeks.... The one I got starts with UN31 so hopefully it is a one-chip. :-D
    I also found out today that a buddy has a snes sitting in the closet. I've been there many times and had no idea!! WTH??

    I miss the good ol’ days of gaming. Tonight I got off work and came home to try and play ps4 & 5 and well all that happened was downloading updates that are forced on me and game updates and console updates and then options and settings were not working in the game so after a couple of hours I gave up and turned them off. Old consoles from PS2 and older all you have to do is put the game in and play. Oh yeah and recently I got locked out of one of my play station accounts. It’s so annoying. You don’t have accounts for old consoles and so no stress. All you have to do with retro consoles is turn it on, put in a game and play. That’s it…. That is all. Having fun right when you turn it on.

    I have some thoughts that this video didn't cover:
    1 - the European SNES looked exactly like the japanese one! I think that Japan and Europe had the best looking SNES. So if you're in north america and is fine with PAL (and that 50 Hz) it can be fun to have the european SNES but it might be hard/expensive to get the PAL versions of the games. Probably some people in Europe that prefer the north american SNES as well.
    And about the japanese SNES and also other japanese consoles: I often think about why it's often pretty much english in the games and not 100% japanese.
    2 - SNES Classic Mini! Same 21 games on the US and european version but the old classic US design and european design. Just buy the one you prefer or which one that's easier to get or cheaper.
    I've looked at the list of games (21) for SNES Classic Mini and I often think about this: what games do I really miss? Do I wanna add more games if possible? The funny thing is that all great SNES games that I wanna play is in SNES Classic Mini. But that's - my - personal opinion.
    So my advice before going into the original hardware: look at SNES Classic Mini and check the game list! Especially if you're on low budget.
    But then we have the gamers that wanna have the original hardware no matter what and some of these guys also wanna have SNES Classic Mini and some don't.
    Also worth to mention: SNES games are also on Switch Online, New 3DS (non-New cannot play SNES), New 2DS and I think also Wii U. So that's a good Plan B or C for gamers if it feels too hopeless to get the original hardware or Classic Mini.
    I still love the "SNES Zelda" (A Link To The Past). Such a great game! The most Must Have game for SNES! And if you love it, then you probably wanna get a 3DS/2DS with Zelda - A Link Between Worlds that is a sequel, kind of a "great 2nd Quest".

  • @Michael-ih3fp

    You might want to do an episode on authentication. Opening is great but you also need to ensure serial numbers match on the rom to the game cartridge. For example Earthbound is SNES-MB and the rom chip should have that laser etched on top. People are now selling authentic looking games on eBay usually expensive games by flashing the game on to a cheap game that has similar chips and selling them. Sorry for long message. Here is 1up :)

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  3 года назад +2

    I actually didnt get an snes until way later but I had played its games before that a bunch too so ive always been a big fan of it. But oddly enough I've now had that beautiful yellowed SNES for years now and have only gotten like 9 games for it when for my other consoles I usually have dozens of games for. I absolutely love the SNES and its library, especially as a huge JRPG fan, but oddly havent gotten as many games for. I plan on changing that in the coming years for sure.
    My tip is that if you are a big JRPG fan like me I suggest to get Ys III. It is surprisingly a pretty cheap jrpg of a pretty popular series. Dont always look for the heavy hitter RPGs but look for more obscure ones and you'll find that they can be much more affordable at times

  • @Jarod_Schultz

    I also heard about people removing the lockout tabs in the cartridge slot so they can play Super Famicom games. I personally don't want to do this because I prefer to keep my console original. But there are 4 alternatives. One is to get a Super Famicom console. Another idea is to get a SFC to SNES cartridge adapter. 2 other options are to use a game genie or game saver device. Both are region free, so you can bypass the lockout tabs. I read that some people do the same thing with N64. They use a gameshark to play Japanese games on the American console.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  3 года назад

      Yes, those are all legitimate methods. I think getting a Super Famicom is probably the coolest option of them all, since they look so unique :)

    Start off with Mario. Those games give you the most bang for your buck. Then get the cheap games that are for 2 players like Super Smash TV, Goof Troop, Kirby Super Star, ect. Also nab the DKC trilogy of games. Super Star Wars games are hard as heck, but soooo good! Sim City and Actraiser are cheap but really addicting. Gradius III is good despite slowdown. Don't let the hardcore players scare you away from playing it. It's solid! Got mine for 9 bucks. And hey if that's too hard, just enter the Konami code and you're good to go!

    While the NES is my favorite system of all-time, The SNES has a batch of games I liked. I owned a SNES for 3 years from 2002 to 2005, until it was lost. I'am soon going to repurchase another SNES and its accessories. The SNES is the greatest Nintendo console of all-time. There's also a wide variety of platformers, action games, puzzles, adventures, racing/sports games, beat 'em ups, fighting games, educational. This system had the best movie, TV show, game show-based games to ever have a successful run. We got Capcom's Mickey Mouse trilogy, Goof Troop, SimCity, F-Zero, Pilotwings, R-Type, Drakkhen, the Super Bases Loaded trilogy, the Madden NFL games, ActRaiser, ActRaiser 2, Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, the Final Fight games, Paperboy 2, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Super Play Action Football, Super Soccer, Super Tennis, Darius Twin, Super Castlevania IV, Super Off Road, Joe & Mac, Super Earth Defense Force, Super Smash T.V., The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, The Addams Family, Lemmings, SmartBall, Extra Innings, Contra III: The Alien Wars, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Rival Turf!, Brawl Brothers, The Peace Keepers, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, Street Fighter II, Street Fighter: Turbo Fighting, Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Mario Paint, the final 2 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, Super Mario Kart, The Simpsons games, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, Faceball 2000, Axelay, Super Double Dragon, Q*bert 3, Out of This World, GunForce, Hook, LucasArts/JVC's Super Star Wars trilogy games, Sky Blazer, Batman Returns, Prince of Persia, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose!, Super Widget, Pocky and Rocky, Race Drivin', Harley's Humungous Adventure, Star Fox, Tom and Jerry, Family Dog, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends, BattleToads in Battlemaniacs, BattleToads/Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team, Mario is Missing!, Mario's Time Machine, the Mortal Kombat games, Secret of Mana, the Tetris series, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, The Incredible Crash Dummies, the Ren & Stimpy trilogy, Wayne's World, Aladdin, Total Carnage, The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, T2: The Arcade Game, the Mega Man X trilogy, Lethal Enfocers, The Jetsons: Invasion of the Planet Pirates, NBA Jam, NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, Super Metroid, Bébé's Kids, Rocko's Modern Life: Spunky's Dangerous Day, King of Dragons, Knights of the Round, Eek! the Cat, The Pirates of Darkwater, The Flintstones: The Treasure of Sierra Madrock, Beath of Fire, the Power Rangers games, Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety, Illusion of Gaia, Earthworm Jim, R-Type III: The Third Lightning, Speed Racer/Mountain Bike Rally, the Donkey Kong Country series, Super Punch-Out!!, X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, Rap Jam: Volume 1, The Lion King, the Kirby series, EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, AAAHH!!! Real Monsters, Scooby-Doo Mystery, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Killer Instinct, Captain Commando, WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game, Toy Story, Aerosmith's Revolution X, Cutthroat Island, Mega Man 7, Frantic Flea, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Magic Boy, Ms. Pac-Man, Mr. Do!, Disney's Pinocchio, Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow, Marvel Super Heroes in: War of the Gems, NBA Hangtime, Harvest Moon, Disney's Timon & Pumbaa's Jungle Games, Arkanoid: Doh It Again, Space Invaders: The Original Game, and Frogger, as well as a few collections of NES games if you do own them on another system, such as Super Mario All-Stars (containing remakes of four NES titles Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 and 3, as well as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2), Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World (includes all the games from Super Mario All-Stars, adding on Super Mario World to it. Because of this, it includes Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3), Tetris & Dr. Mario (a 16-bit enchnaced remakes of Tetris (1989) and Dr. Mario (1990), which were both originally released for the NES and Game Boy), and the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. While the NES is my favorite system, SNES has some of my favorite games ever made. They just require you to sell an arm and a leg...and maybe a lung as well.
    I've seen some UN30 systems that were not 1chip so it is a gamble. In my experience all UN31 have a 1chip 01, UN320 are 1chip 02, and UN321 which is the hardest to find is 1chip 03. The quality is negligible between the three.
    There are devices out there that let you copy over your save file so if you need to replace the battery you can just copy it back. Very helpful for RPG's.

    I only have one SNES console but a good game collection, it's still not yellow at all, just like it'd be brand new and plays like a charm, well, at least when I play it...
    But, there are some of my games that give me some headaches, when that happens I have to remove the game cartridge and put it in again, and start it again, depends of the games of course, it's just insert the game cartridge and start the console if it works then you're good to go, but if it's not, then remove the cartridge, put it in again and start it again, repeat until it starts...
    Note that not all of my games cause me some problem, the only problem I have is to starting the game, but though I'm not sure, I still have a brand new Retron 2 that I bought brand new a few years ago but it's still in the box and I've never played it before, I bought it in case of the SNES console dies on me, as an insurance...
    The games I have were handpicked from the old days ( the 90s ) and still remembered, the rest came along the way, some good, some bad, some I hadn't even heard about back in the 90s...

    • @RetroBirdGaming

      They're very close. The 1 chip 03 is a bit trickier to do brightness mods on as well.

      @@rolandbaron5813 Basically, people find the 1 chip console to run a little too bright, and a mod will fix it. You have to open up the console and do some soldering on the motherboard. But with the 03 there is a more involved soldering job required.

    3 of my most rare and expensive SNES games are Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest VI and Final Fantasy V put out by a small retro gaming company called Timewalk Games. Did this company have any connection to Nintendo? When did these games come out? The 3 games I mentioned were released in Japan for the Super Famicom but not in the U.S. In the 1990's as far as I know. These games were originally English translated ROMs playable on an SNES emulator on a computer. This Timewalk game company put out these English translations on SNES reproduction carts with reproduction SNES labels in boxes that look like original SNES boxes. Do you have any of these Timewalk games or any others this company produced? I have a LOT of my gaming friends searching for these Timewalk games but can't find them for sale on eBay or any retro gaming store. I wonder how many games this company released and if they were only English translated RPGs that never came out originally for the system.

      @RetroBirdGaming  3 года назад

      Timewalk made good stuff and then they shut down. So, I suppose supply is super limited. That's a shame, but you have some nice collector pieces as a result.

      Retro Bird - another gamer here messaged me the games are super rare because it was a 2 man operation and they produced very few games. He said the games sell for $500 now because of rarity. Only reason I have them is because they had English translations of Super Famicom RPG games that never came out for the Super Nintendo. It is the only way I could play Final Fantasy V, Dragon Quest V and VI in English.

    SNES arguably is the greatest Nintendo console ever released, although Switch appears to be gunning for that top spot and may end up surpassing it. Whoever said SNES' library lacks depth is full of dookie. Without even mentioning the top hitters, you've got Capcom's Mickey Mouse trilogy, Goof Troop, Sky Blazer, Batman Returns, Demon's Crest, Prince of Persia, Super Widget, Pocky and Rocky, DoReMi Fantasy, Super Bomberman, Ninja Warriors. Even the licensed titles are mostly good. SNES had an insane library.

    I actually think the older 2 chip SNES consoles look better. Not just the brightness. Over S-Video or Composite the 1 chips look better, but I find over RGB, especially through an OSSC or something it comes out just too sharp. The SNES just wasn't supposed to look like that and digitized graphics in particular suffer I find.

      I think they went with that design because on the original NES they had an issue where people would leave cans of soda on the top of the unit and it'd get liquid damage. They used this design to deter people from putting drinks on the console.
