How could we forget Super Metroid?
Yeah, it's only one of my favorite games ever. Dang. How'd it sneak past me? At least it made it onto the thumbnail!
@@RetroBirdGaming oh, and The Lost Vikings! Definitely one of the best and most underappreciated snes games!
@@PaulRockey Lost Vikings was on Sega Genesis as well. If I recall correctly, it even expanded upon the SNES version in some ways.
100% agree but I feel like the Gameboy Advance ones were an improvement over Super Metroid Metroid Fusion and Metroid zero Mission :D
@@darionovello6886 I’m surprised how many people I see on RUclips saying that Fusion is better than super Metroid. No way. Fusion is a great little game, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the masterpiece that is Super Metroid. I give Fusion an 8.5, but Super Metroid gets an easy 10. As for Zero mission, I never played it.
I still have PTSD from the 16-bit console war.
Hahah I can believe it :)
Did you win though?
You hit most of the hippopotamuses for the SNES. From my collection, I'll add the following: Batman Returns, Final Fight 2, Hagane, and Cybernator.
These are the types of SNES games that appeal to most Genesis loyalist. Although Final Fight 2 should have been much better then what Capcom put out.
@@supersexysega I wasn't that into Final Fight 2, but Final Fight 3 is fantastic.
I own Batman Returns as well and can vouch for it. Excellent little beat 'em up with varied stages.
Man your videos are very fun to watch
Solid list, I'm starting to make a note of these for my upcoming SNES next week. :-D Super Metroid has already been mentioned, but I'll just believe the omission was intentional to see if people are paying attention. lol
The SNES had some good exclusive shmups too, like Axelay, Space Megaforce, Biometal, R-Type III, etc. Not nearly as many as the Genesis, but I own these and love them! :)
People usually say Genesis had all the shooters, but SNES had Gradius III, the Parodius series, R-Type III, Pop’n Twinbee, Axelay, Cotton 100%, and Macross Scrambled Valkyrie
Well the problem with the snes shooters is the slowdown
Some were optimized better than others, but yeah... the Super Nintendo wasn't really built for 'em.
Did you mention Super Punch-Out? I had lots of fun with that exclusive as a kid. Still revisit it here and there.
After my Genesis was stolen and not having a console for over a year, my older brother was nice enough to gave me his SNES after he got a PS1. Got to play games he had accumulated in the years after moving out of my parents house. Super Metroid, FF2/3, and A link to the Past are my favorite standout exclusives.
Those are all amazing games!
I really missed out on the SNES when I was younger. I opted for the Genesis but I should have waited for the SNES, I think. I really enjoyed the Genesis but was always jealous that my friends had games like the Final Fantasy ones and such. Good part is now I can go back and enjoy them now because I have a pretty good collection at this point. Cheers.
I always felt that not owning a Super Nintendo as a kid (myself) added to the intrigue.
When you compare the best games from both the Super Nintendo and Genesis, the SNES is on a whole different level, I know that they competed in terms of sales, but the Genesis games could never compete with them due to the unique experience that SNES games offered, but you should still play Genesis games since they are still fun to play to this day.
Good video. Let’s not forget the hundreds of rpgs that came out that were Snes exclusive at the time.
People are often blown away by how many stayed in Japan when they look into it.
Retro Bird absolutely! It’s crazy to look at a game like Fire Emblem Thracia 776 and realize it come out in late 99 and early early 2000.
God, I love the 16 bit era.
Great vid man, as a survior of the 16-bit wars this is pushing me closer to picking up a Super NT. I fondly Wild Guns and it's the reason I picked up Reloaded on the PS4. It's good to see Act Raiser get some love too. The Genesis always had an edge in the shmup genre, but U.N. Squadron, Axelay, Super R-Type, and R-Type III did look pretty good on the SNES. Oddly enough I'm currently playing through SMW, hopefully I finish it this time 😅
Yeah, the Super Nintendo isn't quite as terrible for shoot 'em ups as it's reputation. It's oookay. Not amazing, but still decent.
F-Zero, Star Fox, Pilot Wings are thee I think you missed :)
Haha. I mentioned F-Zero when I was talking about Mario Kart. Star Fox (on SNES at least) and Pilot Wings I've found to be a bit polarizing... so I left them off.
@@RetroBirdGaming You mean polarizing to sega fans???
I love Turtles in Time! It has so much going for it, but for me, the fact that hyperstone heist has a dash button puts it on top for me. I find it more fun to play, but man 16 bit Konami did no wrong
I had it as a kid too and never bothered with turtles in time cause I thought it was the same. Never played it at the arcade, only ever played the first arcade game. I feel turtles in time is more polished and has the arcade feels while heist has the beat em up feel but on a smaller scale. Idk how or why but it just does. Don't tell younger me this though lol.
Hyperstone Heist is better. With all Genesis games they have way smoother controls. Also you don't have to beat the game on the hardest setting you can beat it on normal to get the real ending. If you beat it on easy they censor the ending.
I enjoyed the content of this RUclips video.
Glad to hear it :)
Lol...hippopotamus! Good for you, changing it up! Great video dude!
Thanks! I appreciate it.
8 and 16 bits era never died!
Nope. They are as alive as ever!
No mention of Super Metroid is sacrilege. Super Metroid was the pinnacle of the era.
I meant to put it in there. It's even in the thumbnail! One of my favorite games ever.
@@RetroBirdGaming I assumed you edited out the moment when you tried to hold up a Super Metroid cartridge... but it was a slightly underripe banana
Wild Guns is included on the switch now with a Nintendo subscription
Well worth playing!
Definetly saving this video to help me make sure I aquire some essentials
I think Super Nintendo won the consoles wars of this generation I personally think it’s the best console of all time but that’s a whole other story
I totally understand that they are both fantastic systems
Fun fact: The Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis are my two favorite consoles ever.
The snes was for family friendly gaming and the Genesis was for the edgy arcade crowd.
Dkc series , Yoshi island didn't aged a bit
Great video man!
Thank you! Welcome to the channel if this is your first video :)
Ken Griffey Junior Presents was only for the SNES and is probably the best baseball game of the 16 bit era. Which is an outlier, because generally speaking the Genesis sports titles were as good or better.
I will never understand the people who won't let things go. You skip on either of these consoles as a retro gamer and you're robbing yourself.
Couldn't agree with you more. I suppose it's possible that somebody genuinely only likes one, but I'd imagine that's more of an exception than a rule.
I think retro gamers nowadays don't pick sides anymore. they just play something and if they like it, they like it and then try out the other system. We didnt have that luxury back then so we picked a side and stayed with it. Like Magento from X-Men on Sega would say " if they only knew......"
I love all of your videos, man. Never stop, you're like a wholesome Scott the Woz.
Thank you!
the only games I like on the SNES are only on the S. Famicom lol. We missed out on a lot of great titles!
The reason most exclusive 3rd party games came out on snes was because of an exclusive overlap of contracted exclusive content from the NES. Irem and Konami made shooters for the snes when they could have been done better on genesis. Also by the time the contract expired and Konami made the genesis variants they were limited to small cart sizes. Sunset riders cart on snes was 2x bigger than the genesis for example.
What Nintendo established with the NES definitely set them up nicely for the Super Nintendo.
Wario's Woods very fun couch competitive game Killer Instincts as well another really good RPG /adventure game Brain Lord very underrated game if you like Zelda/ Final Fantasy will love this game and one of my favourite shooter / Mac games Cybernator this game has it all great graphics amazing soundtrack one of my favourite shooters for SNES !
All good choices!
Most of the games mentioned in this video could work on the Genesis with the exception of the DKC games. The system wasn't quite strong enough and would probably have been a 32X game. The fact that DKC didn't need any add-ons was a big middle finger to Sega.
I don't understand why people hate DKC 3 as well. If it is indeed because of Kiddy Kong then that's just stupid.
Seriously. DKC3 has so much creativity put into the different levels and really nails that "country" aesthetic.
David Wise soundtrack omission has something to do with it. DK1 and DK2 are so iconic because of him.
To combat dr robotniks mean bean machine on Sega, I really like Tetris attack. It’s one of the best, if not THE best “puzzle” style game on the SNES. It has stood the sands of time. Possibly a good video idea (games that held up over the years and games that did not)
Tetris Attack is great. I thought about mentioning it in this video, but so many people don't like puzzle games that I ended up leaving it off. But yeah, if you like puzzle games it's a no-brainer.
Even though I know it's not a high-tier game... for some reason I really like playing Uniracers. And I'm at a loss for a Genesis counterpart.
So many good Capcom games. Final Fights, King of Dragons, Captain Commando, Batman Returns, Knights of The Round Table (Yes, I like beatemups!)
Batman Returns is Konami, if you're thinking of the SNES game. Even still, Capcom put out a ton of great beat 'em ups.
@@RetroBirdGaming Oh dang, you're right!
Have you ever played/own Soul Blazer? It's my favorite SNES game and favorite game of all time. It defines my childhood!
So, no reference to Sparkster ? :-o :D
I haven't played it enough yet.
Ah, you forgot to talk about the best SNES Mario game, Mario is Missing
Actually, I don’t think I can’t call it a Mario game, more of a Luigi game
Haha. Makes sense. After all, Mario is Missing!
Yea I agree. GET BOTH!!
Yes!
Not a bad person, but kinda surprised that you brought up final fantasy vi but not final fantasy iv
I feel like the GBA is a handheld version of both of these.
This is what I really love about SNES & Genesis! So unique games for each console! There's of course pros and cons with how this console war was. We can also say: "wish one console could play all games so we neee just one console and not two". But that's the charm: when you gonna buy a console you can really see the difference when it comes to games.
I mean, compare SNES vs Genesis with PS vs Xbox! PS vs Xbox is not about exclusive games and that's so boring! Of course there are a few exclusives but look at the big picture: take a look at the games you see in the stores and in ads! All games are on both PS and Xbox now. So it's not that important now in 2021 if you buy PS or Xbox. But back in the early 90s it was so important which console you bought cuz "all" games were exclusives.
Now in 2021 I got both SNES Classic Mini and Genesis Classic Minu: i'm very happy with both! I know both consoles got some Street Fighter 2 game. But I'm not a big fan of that kind of games anyway.
I was a Genesis kid back in the day (although I played my fair share of SNES too), and even I remember accepting the notion that the Sega Genesis didn't have comparable options to many of the SNES games. However, as I've gotten back into retro gaming, I've realized the Genesis did have a lot of good alternatives to many of the SNES exclusives. The Vectorman series was similar in many ways to Donkey Kong Country series. Crusader of Centy had a lot of similarities to A Link to the Past. Beyond Oasis also had a lot of similarities to a A Link to the Past and Secret of Mana. Pulseman had similarities to Mega Man X. And as crazy as it sounds. Buster's Hidden Treasure actually feels a lot like Super Mario World (a similar overworld map and some similar level designs). Now, I'm not say these games are as good as the SNES games (although I did enjoy Beyond Oasis as much as A Link to the Past and Secret of Mana), but I feel like there is more variety on the Sega Genesis than what we gave it credit for back in the day.
Also, I would argue that the Ecco the Dolphin games were an underwater version (and much more frustrating and hair pulling version) of Super Metroid.
A lot of the best games for the Genesis weren't nearly as popular as they should've been back in the day.
F-Zero and Super Metroid. Oh and Mario Allstars!
Wow, no HyperZone... ?? Shows how much YOU know about the SNES!! I don't even know how I came into owning that game, I need to ask my bro.
Hahah talkin' 'bout those elite games :)
@@RetroBirdGaming He thinks it may have been a rental we never took back, I think the same thing happened for Flashback and Cobra Triangle. Like the rental stores closed down.
Super Metroid... Enough said😏
One of my all-time favorites!
The Super Nintendo sports games, hah! Ken Griffey, NCAA Basketball, Super Tennis, Super Punch-Out, Give 'n Go, Stanley Cup, Baseball Simulator 1.000...
Genesis only had World Series Baseball, NFL/Montana, Greatest Heavyweights, and Mutant League.
Goof Troop!
I prefer the mega drive, but you have to admit the SNES had one of the best console libraries and exclusives of all time.
Yes. Two of the greatest consoles ever made.
As a Genesis guy first and foremost, I still love and collect alot of SNES games. I will say most of the slower paced platformers with save features and overworld maps don't appeal much to me. These include the Mario's, Donkey Kong's. They are perfectly fun playable games but feel like quantity over quality and collectathon type for my taste.
Direct comparison to most Genesis platformers which take 40 minutes to one hour to beat with better pacing, more set pieces, diverse environments and dynamic level design. The obvious comparison is Sonic vs Mario but even games like Dynamite Headdy, Ristar, Treasure Land Adventure, High Seas Havoc, Pulseman, Decap Attack fit the mold pretty well. Games like Flink, Kid Chameleon and Busters Hidden Treasure feel more SNES like on Genesis.
I will add I find JRPG's to be an unplayable genre. So alot of the SNES luster is gone with that taste in mind. What I missed on SNES was the Natsume exclusives, Pretty much all the Capcom exclusives and some of the Konami exclusives.
Additionally SNES action type games Actraiser 1/2 add in dreadful gameplay variation. With Actraiser 1 it's that world building b.s. and Actraiser 2 there is this mode 7 pick your stage aspect like wtf can I just play the game? Same issues with Demons Crest such a slog to get through.
It makes sense that you would find the Natsume games appealing. Those are perhaps some of the most "Genesis-Like" games on the console. They're pretty fast-paced, and have a little bit of that "edge" to 'em that most Genesis games do so well (in particular Wild Guns and Ninja Warriors).
Which Sega Genesis model is best?
Most people will say the model 1 that has "high-definition" graphics written on it. The answer can get even more technical, but that's the one most people prefer.
I never liked the snes slow cpu and cropped resolution I prefer the Genesis fast cpu and wide resolution plus the snes didn't have the sega arcade ports.
I really like those aspects about the Genesis as well. Just not enough to write off the Super Nintendo.
Too bad there was no snes excitebike that coulda been cool
Yeah, the closest thing on SNES would be... Uniracers?
Excite bike is on SNES was Japan BS only tho but can be played on everdrive carts now tho :-)
Fire Emblem, but unless you know Japanese you have to play a translated version.
Yeah, the Super Nintendo games are really good!
You shouldn't compare the snes and Genesis because the snes is family friendly gaming and the Genesis is arcade action with attitude and edginess I'll take the Genesis thank you.
They definitely both offer something different.
Almost every game I can remember that came to both consoles run and looked better on the sega genesis, but every single one of them played better with the snes dpad. And also exclusives were not balanced at all; sega paled against nintendo exclusives.
Kid chameleon for Mario, a lot harder with tons of replay value, wonderboy 3 for super metroid more action, better controls and navigation, shinning force 2 for final fantasy, street racer (is better on snes) for kart games and in some f1 games you can play coop, soleil, light crusader and story of Thor for Zelda, shooters and sport games run better on sega, contra hard corps (only six stages in snes, two of them bring dizziness), castlevania bloodlines (castlevania 4 great sound but too easy for my taste), street of rage 1,2,3, gungstar heroes. Sega genesis has better frame rates, bigger resolution to see more
I can see that you're on Team Sega!
@@RetroBirdGaming Donkey Kong 2 is great, but I don't like Super Mario, cryptic Zelda/Metroid games, the slow gameplay of street fighter 2 and mortal kombat. All snes games are worse version counterpart of nes, my opinion. Also road rush for mario kart and micromachines better on genesis, the list goes on forever
Well, you have a point. That said, most of those games simply didn't appeal to me. My friend and cousin both were big snes fans. So I did play them a lot.
It just didn't click with me. MK was choppy, Fzero was confusing to me at the time, DKC looked weird... and on and on. I recognize the Super had some great RPGS. But mostly they were done in a cutesy style that even today isn't really my thing. But a bigger issue was that's basically the standard look. And they were more Jrpgs.
I prefer the medieval type art approach. Or if they had made a new Startropics. Love those games.
I guess it depends how you look at it. For me, I saw "cutesy" more as just colorful. I love color in my games and it's one of the biggest things that retro games do better than modern games.
@@RetroBirdGaming I don't entirely disagree. I like color also. Sometimes I don't express myself well. I really liked the colors in SMB 2. It felt surreal.
Maybe it's more about color creating a mood or atmosphere? I do like Final Fight. But Streets of Rage while it does have a lot of color to it, feels like it hews closer to the story, three cops taking on a street gang. It feels dirty somehow. FF feels more cartoonish.
Likewise Golden Axe. It feels like a brutal Conan movie, with muted tones.
It works. It reminds me of the 1989 Batman movie, which was over the top, versus the later ones which had neon and flashing lights which I felt was a bit too flamboyant.
I like hearing your thoughts. Thank you.
@@andrewt6338 I appreciate how thoughtful your comments are and enjoy reading them as well. I like where your head is at. How color is used to create different moods and aesthetics is very important. Perhaps that could be a video topic at some point!
I’m so glad I grew up with a Snes and not with a Genesis, so funny segaboys haven’t recover after 30 years 😂😂😂
I prefer SNES then genesis the are good games but i'm a Nintendo need if you like sega ( I do ) then go to genesis
Sounds fair to me.
