    I love my grey brick. I never leave home without it. Last year, thanks to a black friday sale, I picked up a Game Boy Everdrive and it's been one of the best decisions I ever made. Not too long ago, I was playing it in public somewhere and someone asked permission to take a picture for their facebook page because they couldn't believe some people still play the original.

    I think the portability component of the original Gameboy can not be overstated enough. Back in the day it was pretty common for a family to only have a single TV that they all had to share. For me personally, I wasn't always able to play my NES because my parents wanted to watch something on TV. The Gameboy solved this issue for so many kids back in the day.

    I'm a fresh out of college young fella who just recently got his first big-boy job and discovered expendable income. As I already had a modest Gamecube collection and had just been introduced to the glory of the HDMI adaptors people make for them, I was thrilled to play my favorite Gamecube games in the highest definition the system natively outputs to. And oh, my! Games looked stunning on my modern HD TV. I couldn't hold myself back from shelling out the money to get a Gameboy Player, and wow, was that a good decision. The few gameboy games I had looked so great through the HDMI adaptor, it was like playing the NES mini! Since that moment I became a bonafide Gameboy game collector. I was pleased to discover that many gameboy boxes aren't as expensive as you would think, considering how old they are and how many got thrown away. For any "major" title, I get the box and manual, and everything else I'm fine with loose cartridges. I'm really happy with how easy it is to throw together a decent sized collection, with not too too many games running high in price. Especially with Gameboy Advance, I try to focus on GB and GBC, but find myself constantly running into GBA games that I'd like to have, and are priced pretty fair.
    I'm getting close to a full set of mario games all in boxes, and I'm basically finished with all the non-GBA pokemon games all complete (talk about nostalgia!). I tend not to shop for sealed games, as I like to play the games that I own, but there are a couple I have here. One, is Super Mario World, because how many different ways do I need to play it? I have the Switch, the SNES mini, and I have it on the actual SNES. When I found a sealed copy of it for the GBA with the yellow Best Buy sticker, I knew I'd be fine with it. My other sealed game is Resident Evil Gaiden. Not the greatest game for the system, or for the franchise, but I'm a big RE fan, I have a loose copy to play with, and the game doesn't have many copies floating around, so it's my own little piece of history.
    My favorite thing about the Gameboy is how many games and franchises it has that are incredibly fun but have faded into obscurity. Most fans seem to respect the Mario Land series, but there's so much more to discover, and a lot of the titles can't be found on modern eshops. How many gamers have never played Donkey Kong 94? A lot of people talk about Golden Sun, but how many have the opportunity to play it? Then there's games like Mole Mania, Ballon Kid, Survival Kids, Legend of the River King, Gargoyles, and all the major franchises that have had their time on the systems, like Zelda, Kirby, Mario, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Final Fantasy even had some ARPG spin offs, and of course, Pokemon. I absolutely love this little section of retro gaming I stumbled upon.

    I'm from the U.S. but I'm living and working near Tokyo and I agree Japanese GB games are the way to go! In most cases they're usually the exact same game with maybe a different name. Most games cost only the equivalent of $3-5 dollars (even the hit games). I usually pick up a new game every weekend at the retro shops, it's a nice way to collect something and treat myself without breaking the bank!

    Gameboy is and always will be a classic. My advice to any collector as always is to simply buy what you feel you'll play and interest you, not what everyone else considers the best; that way you'll possibly build a more humbling and personal collection. Great video as always.

    I have another argument in favor of the gameboy screen without a light. I find it to be the perfect device to play outside in a sunny day. That's when the screen looks the better and precisely when other devices don't. I find it almost impossible to play my 3ds or psp out in a bright day. The same principles apply with reading a physical book or an electronic book outside.
    So if you go on a camping trip or a picinc and want to relax under a tree playing some video games, get your gameboy or gameboy color.
    Btw gameboy color is my prefered way of playing all gameboy games. The screen is far better than both the original, the pocket and the advance (without light), and the battery life is just insane 30+ hours, you can finish a whole rpg with just two AA batteries. Which is far greater than whatever modern system you can take on a trip. Another point for gameboy

      @@llamathenerd1672 I think it happens when you leave your gameboy in the sun or in very hot places for prolonged periods of time. I think it is difficult for it to happen to actively used gameboys. Since people also don't stay in the sun long enough to be burned.
      I lived in Mexico and played with mine for years and my screen is pretty good.

    My gameboy experience goes all the way back to 1992. Overall a very shit year for me but for my tenth birthday my dad sent me some birthday money and I used it to get a gameboy and I freakin loved that thing. Took it to school and played it just about everywhere for a while. It was technically my first Nintendo console as the swap deal that saw my master system with 8 games become a NES with four games happened afterwards. It was so cool at the time to buy it new and to get that full unboxing experience at the age of ten. I really wished I kept the box but it wasn’t until the late nineties that I realized that keeping the box and looking after it is worthwhile.
    By the mid nineties I was expecting the OG gameboy to be finished due to its limited graphics but then a game called Pokémon came along and not made me glad I still had a gameboy in fact it made me glad I could get a second gameboy very cheap, for less than half of what the corresponding Pokémon game cost brand new. Haha good times. One more thing tho I held off on getting a GBC because I was hoping for a bigger jump in graphics output and the GBA made that dream come thru and it only took three years. I can remember getting a brand new GBA at toys R us for my birthday almost ten years after getting my OG gameboy. Naturally I kept the box for that and still have that console in addition to my OG gameboy

    Definitely agree that getting rechargeable batteries and a recharger was the way to go. Just don't leave the charger in a hotel room when you're on vacation.
    Related to that lapse of judgment, the game boy, to me, felt like a badge of maturity. I was able to take care of my game boy pocket well enough that my parent's bought me a gameboy color when they came out.

    I bought a Gameboy from a friend of mine in 1997. He never used it. He got as a Christmas present a few years back. The only game he has was Jeopardy. He played once or twice and stuck it back in the box. I ended buying more games. The problem was I didn't care for it either. So I have 16 games along with the boxes, manuals, advertising inserts, everything that came in them. They've been sitting in the cabinet for almost 25 years. I'm happy to hear that the values have skyrocketed. It might be time to sell.

    I had the long/tall official hard shell plastic case for my original (DMG) Game Boy. I’d be able to carry everything in it and despite the number of years I actively played the machine I’d never run out of space for my games. I guess I never felt the need to have many of those strangely enough.
    I honestly remember the total number of games I put into it being roughly 11 or twelve, but also that being my total library of games for the machine. But that would be a lot for a kid with a single console in the 90’s who relied upon birthdays and Christmas’s anyway.
    That sounds about right actually.
    Great Stuff, as always.

And I also admit that it really is better on your eyes too, and playing with no backlight feels so good, even though I do have a modded pocket that I love to death that I use most often.
    I loved the video but I have one more tip for people who are collecting, and that’s the launch titles. There’s only 6 and they’re all really solid games for like 10 bucks each. It’s a great way to get into collecting

Eventually sold off the grey brick, a dumb decision, but got the original GBA at the time and still played outside or by the lamp. Today, I own the Clear Play It Loud DMG, have a GBC, and a GBA, and a Super GameBoy too. Had an SP 101 at one point, but sold it. I enjoy the DMG for nostalgia, but really can't spend much time on it today, as there are better options today, my favorite for playing old school games is Black and white mode on GBC.

    Gameboy was my companion for many years, especially on family road trips. The biggest deals were the 10hr battery life and library of amazing exclusive games. In many ways, I preferred the Gameboy versions of certain series over their console mainstays (eg. Link's Awakening, Battletoads). In fact, Gameboy hardware is in itself a worthwhile collection. My favorite right now is the GBA Micro which is just the tiniest little thing and can legitimately be kept in your pocket all the time.

    The Gameboy was basically a portable NES and lasted 10 years. That's quite the feat. The biggest issue for me was not the lack of a backlight but the motion blur itself. The Gameboy Color screen is a huge improvement. It's still not backlit but the motion blur was greatly reduced and was much easier to see requiring only a little bit of light.
    You weren't a true gamer unless you were rocking a Gameboy fanny pack in the 90's.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  3 года назад +2

      I agree that the motion blur is the biggest issue, and it makes sense that the Game Boy would improve it's screens with each iteration. You're right, the Color has a really nice screen. But with that said, the original Game Boy's limitations just don't bother me like I would think. It's charm makes up for it with me. Also, the blur seems to be less of an issue with a game like Tetris (making it even more of a brilliant pack-in). Yes, fanny packs are a sign of dedication!

    I'd argue the experience of playing super Mario ports on the gameboy and gameboy advance is better than home consoles. The smaller screens allow you to take everything in at once and react to enemies and obstacles without moving your eyes.

    My handheld of choice is the DS, with the GBA and 3DS right on its heels. That being said, the GameBoy and GameBoy Color has a vast library of games and shouldn't be missed or underestimated. It's funny, I've never seen anyone "whip out" any hand held gaming devices in public. It's a shame cause, if you want to game, then GAME.

    SP AGS-101 for me. I'm trying to cover maximum platforms with minimum hardware, so an SP and 2DS XL has me covered for all portable Nintendo. I don't like the idea of having to take consoles in and out of storage and mess with connections, so having all game consoles installed and ready to go all the time definitely puts a limit on what I choose to pursue. Already I have 4 portable systems (SP, 2DS XL, Switch Lite, PSP) which are primarily used for playing at home, when I don't feel like screwing around with going downstairs, turning on the TV, the sound system, the console, the controller, and walking over to the bookshelves to get a game and walk back to put it in, then wade through all the splash screens and menus before I can begin playing. The draw for portable systems for me is portability within the home! =D

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  3 года назад +2

      I agree that portability within the home ends up being the biggest use for portable consoles. It's easy to just grab a handheld and jump right into a game.

    Playing on my own Gameboy pocket as a kid and my cousins original Gameboy was great! So many memories.. As an adult I prefer The Switch Lite, because I can play, snes donkey kong, Super mario world, super mario 3+ all stars, original nes Donkey Kong 1-2. and a few more, that's about the only Retro games I play, And I play them a lot actually.. Also Crash bandicoot and Spyro are a ton of fun, the 4/3 tv option mode is great, the only 2 bad things about the Switch Lite are that I can only lie down on the bed or couch on my back whle playing and not sit on a table because of the wide form factor. Second is that I need to rent these classics games and go online every fucking week to play them.. god damn.. But stil the Switch Lite is the only thing I am playing on now, even my 3DS is starting to get boring now, only have a few games for the 3DS... The gameboy advance SP I have an 101 ags FANICOM version, very very cool with my favorite game Super mario bros 3, I can sit normal on a chair and a table playing the SP, it's probably the best form factor of handhelds out there, together with the original Gameboy... But man the original Gameboy WAS SO BIG/COOL back in the 90's..

    I have a GBA that's modded with the AGS 101 screen, and it's awesome. It gives you the benefits of both the SP and the original model GBA. That said, one game I play crap out of on GBA is Metroid Fusion, because although Zero Mission is a great remake, Fusion had a much more interesting and often scary setting. The BSL Space Station is like a strange hybrid between space station and virtual habitat. I also love the control scheme in Metroid Fusion. Instead toggling missiles with the Select button, you hold R and press B, and this makes it easier to just equip the missiles at a moment's notice to spam them into a boss. Samus will also automatically grab ledges and go into morph ball automatically while holding a ledge near a morph ball tunnel. Wall jumping is easier as well. Metroid Fusion is such a great game, and I could go on for hours about it. The other game I play most on GBA is Mario Bros, by which I mean the remake on Super Mario Advance 3. Better graphics, controls, and it actually includes music. Just a lot of quality of life improvements that were added in the GBA Mario Bros Remake, and it's included on the same GBA cartridge as Yoshi's Island.

The only downside to the SP for me personally is no headphone jack & playing OG Gameboy/GB Color games can be a little awkward as the cartridge sticks out.

    I Modded an original gameboy advance. Its great except that for some reason movement can stop when pressing on the D pad. I cleaned the contacts and replaced the membrane but I still have the issue. It was tolerable in Pokemon but a pain for the metroid games. I actually have the GameCube gameboy player start up disc and Hori gameboy player Controller. At home its the most fun. I think I'm either gonna try to find another GBA and mod it or buy one pre Modded. I like the backlight GBAs and don't want to deal with missed inputs.
