Games played: Rayman (0:01), Suikoden II (0:09), Klonoa (0:24), Gradius Gaiden (0:45), Legend of Mana (0:55), Resident Evil 2 (2:04), Metal Gear Solid (7:05) Also, I just wanted to mention that while I show the hybrid prototype of the Nintendo PlayStation.. there were indeed plans at one point for an add-on unit (as I say "add-on" in the video). Also, you can use the PS2 memory card to back up PS1 saves (as many of you have mentioned). However, you still need a PS1 memory card to create those save files to begin with.

The Suikoden games are amazing. I actually got Suikoden 1 for $2 complete. The front cover has a crack in it but for $2 I can't complain.
I would love to own Suikoden 2 on disc but it's like $800Au or more for a complete copy and I need complete copies.

Blatantly saying the 5th gen 3D games are all ugly shows how little of video games these people actually know and how little they enjoy games in general. I hope they aren't as critic with their own ugly selves, specially as they age.
Apart from that, there are so many unique 3D games from the 5th gen for the N64, PS1 and Saturn with so much charm and great art direction, this was a great generation for gaming fans.

I've always been a fan, but for whatever reason, I've become a much bigger fan of the PS1 in recent years. Whenever I go to a second-hand game shop, it tends to be the console I go straight for. The shift from the Super Famicom's dominance in Japan to a new 3D platform from a less controlling company lead to all sorts of strange and inventive new games. There's so many games that are just completely unique to the PS1. Bushido Blade, Bust-a-Groove, Bomberman Fantasy Race, Bishi Bashi Special, and that's just the Bs.
Sony's perceived coolness and multimedia focus seemed to lead to games that were lead less by programmers and project planners and more artists, musicians and creative directors, and I think a lot of really cool and distinctive games came from that shift in perspective.
I've also become a much bigger fan of how PS1 games look in recent years. Now, with so much shared middleware and graphics engines, it's hard for games to carry much of their own visual identity without opting for heavily stylised graphics. On the PS1, every aspect of the presentation relied on the creativity and technical knowledge of the developers. 3D models, pre-rendered assets and hand-drawn pixel art could all be used in tandem to present some really complex visuals. They're more constrained by the limitations of the game design too, which makes them feel like a more natural, logical part of the game. I really love how Metal Gear Solid and Klonoa look and will take them anyday over Twin Snakes and Phantasy Reverie's less distinctive styles.
I love the PS1. I think it's one of the most interesting consoles ever made.

You joke about people thinking the PS2 was just a DVD player, but this feature was huge in Japan. It kicked off a huge spike in movie rentals, and it was the go-to device for DVD playback, with games being incidental for many buyers.

Preordered the PlayStation at an electronic store in 1995. It was one of only a few game consoles that I would ever preorder. It and it’s game were everything they advertised and I own my original complete in box. There were so many games released that I wasn’t able to keep up let alone enjoy them all and to this day I discover wonderful games like Board Game Top Shop. Give it a go, it’s become one of my favorite PS1 games of all time

PS1 will always be in my heart as that was the 1st console (not portable) gaming system I bought with my own money. I've had other consoles, but they were hand me downs & I didn't have to spend a dime. Before Mario Kart my favorite racing game of all time was Jet Moto. No drifting in that game just some futuristic electric bolt to get you around corners! That just blew my mind. Also didn't know the PS3 played PS1 games. I may still have mine. (Project to look into today!) Thanks again for the Bird Seeds for my future enjoyment of my Retro Games!

The funny thing is that you can copy PS1 saves to a PS2 memory card. You just can't use them!
Ape Escape isn't talked about as much as I'd like it to be. It just came out on PS5 but still, it sucks that it's been 15 years since the last proper Ape Escape (Ape Escape 3 in 2006). Interactive CD demo discs are also very nostalgic. Parappa 1 and 2 along with Um Jammer Lammy also need more love. Oh, and Tomba in America/Tombi in Europe.

To answer this video's question, is a game I've mentioned it a few times in the comments. The first Fear Effect is my favorite PS1 game nobody talks about anymore, though in truth it's probably not the most obscure thing on the console, it did get a sequel that received a lot of press for all the wrong reasons. The first game has a pretty tight narrative even when the story goes full bonkers in the later half. It's a cool dark sci-fi neo-noir survival horror game with stylish early cel-shaded graphics.
The thing that holds it back and probably why a lot of people don't talk about it anymore is the wonky tank-controls and finicky trial and error combat. It's also kind of a product of its time in terms of subject matter and some of the "Rated M for Mature" material. If you can look past that and are in the mood for something that feels like Akira meets Blade Runner then I recommend it.

    • @immitationstation3369
      @immitationstation3369 2 года назад +1

Love that game! I remember wanting to play it since it had that Cel shade style and I was addicted to Jet grind radios art style
I don't mind the tank controls but some of the puzzles were so cryptic. I had to look at an online guide for that part where you were in a kitchen and had to sneak past everyone.
I have the sequel but have yet to play it and its a shame Fear Effect Inferno never came out 😔

when i got back into playing 16 bit and 32 bit games, the market for a lot of these libraries had been insane for a while. i started with the saturn import collection and found that a lot of japanese ebayers were charging $25 or more for shipping so to make that cost worth it, i'd throw a few low dollar titles into the cart. i'd buy a high dollar game for what i felt was a reasonable price then add a bunch of cheap games. now i own most of the saturn's rarer shmups along with a bunch of killer ps1 import titles. the ebayers i've dealt with were willing to combine ship as many as 6-7 games at a time. this method has made import collecting super worth the effort.

This is a good summary of how to play a physical PS1 collection on different PlayStation hardware. The PS3 is a terrible way of playing these games on a HD TV though. Hooking a PC/laptop into the TV is probably the best way of using original discs. I recommend the ePSXe emulator. You can also use your original controllers with a USB adapter that costs only a few dollars too.
The emulator will save without memory cards but using original memory cards for your old saves and writing new ones on is where technical hurdles begin. That was also kinda the same on PS3 (no memory card slot) but the solutions for PC aren't so user friendly.

I really appreciate that this video didn't focus on the rarity or "collector's value" of these games, but rather the merits of the games themselves. Too often do I see the content of video games overlooked for the purported prestige of their place on the market.
As far as a game I'd recommend people check out? I was tempted to list a few games which are great but unfortunately pretty expensive, but going right along with my sentiments above I'm going with "Sorcerer's Maze." It's a Breakout clone but you play as either a fairy or magical cat thing through 101 different levels of various patterns and block types with a lot of neat magical upgrades throughout. So, it's a fun game, fun concept, lots of content, and there's even a two player mode. On top of it all, a CIB copy will set you back less than $10 according to Pricecharting, and that's about how much I got mine for. Definitely worth checking out!

Hi retrobird - love the videos. Im a 1st gen gamer (very old dude) since atari 2600. With the ps1 I was there at launch and the games I never hear about are the early ones, mostly 2d efforts such as rapid reload (a gunstar heroes ripoff) hot blooded family (japanese beatem up), mr domino, bishi bashi special, radical bikers, incredible crisis, broken sword, super pang collection, puchi carat. Im in the UK the pal library was huge, I ran a video game store when the ps1 was king and the dreamcast was being launched. The dreamcast being my fave console ever. I left the business around the time of the wii launch - gaming changed a lot by then, but am still a huge gamer. Also I used to be a huge collector / player of neo geo mvs games, though I parted with the colllection years ago I still play the games using a neo geo mini. Sorry im getting sidetracked... more obscure ps1 games theme hospital, kudelka (rpg made by snk) kula world, any games made by jvc, penny racers, the list is endless🤘

The PS1 is awesome for the 3D games because it has the way better camera angles compared to modern systems because you can see everything & it pans with you like 2D games. Example of that would be the Resident Evil games.
Games I recommend for this system. The Resident Evil games 1-3 (for 1 play the Director's Cut) Crash Bandicoot 2 & 3, Dino Crisis 1 & 2, Fear Effect 1 & 2. Metal Gear Solid, Star Wars The Phantom Menance & Silent Hill. The 2D games for sure.
Resident Evil 2 on the PS1 is by far the best Resident Evil game I have ever played. Never mind about the crappy RE 2 remake where Mr. X is chasing you throughout majority of the game.

the ps1 is hands down the best console out there. I have over 300 titles for it. Out of all my console systems I own, I have the most games for my ps1. Resident Evil and Castlevania symphony of the night are the top 2 games ever made in my opinion and they just so happen to be on the ps1. Other great sleeper games just to name a few on the console would be heart of darkness, oddworld, and lets not forget Einhander, I could go on and on but now I have to go to work. Great video!!!

I know this is a collecting video and I do have a small collection of PS1 games (about 40) but as the prices continued to rise, I was praying for a different original hardware solution...in stepped the PSIO...and then the Xstation, which is my current choice. Good quality ODE's that can play (in the Xstations case) every PS1 game! The PSIO allows you to keep the disc drive, but it has some compatibility issues. Anyway, just an option for those who want to play their original PS1 and save some $.

I had my PS3 connected to an old CRT TV for years when I first got once back in 2008. It's difficult to read the text but it never stopped me having fun or completing games. I remember trying it on my parents large screen TV but I always preferred my CRT. My parent threw my old TV away a few years ago so I've estranged them. I'm not joking.

I haven't seen anyone in the comment section suggest it, so I will: Armored Core! I've recently gotten into the series after Armored Core 6 was announced and it's a series I regret not playing sooner, especially because the cost of them is so high. My favorite games in the series are on PS2, but the series of course started on PS1 with the original Armored Core and its expansion sequels Project Phantasma and Master of Arena. Too many people only know From Software from 2009 onwards but before Demon's Souls they were making some of the best mecha games on the planet since 1997. Great series, doesn't get enough love.

So many good games on the PS1! I won’t mention the well known classics, but here are some gems I love that I feel deserve more attention:
Hot Shots Golf 2: it’s a fun golf game, pretty easy to pick up, and super solid.
Twisted Metal 2: great vehicular combat with good stages and characters
Xena Princess Warrior: I originally expected this to be garbage being from a TV series, but it’s actually pretty fun. It isn’t too long either, so it doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Legend of Dragoon: good RPG with interesting battle mechanics. You time your hits (like in Mario RPG for the SNES), so it almost feels like a little mini rhythm game.

That's the great thing about the PlayStation. 1 is you could get 10 different people and ask them their top 10 games and they'd all have different choices. Compare that to people who owned a Nintendo 64 they generally always go for the same games because they were so little choice on that platform

Here are my favorites that don't cost too much and are relatively unknown:
-Board Game Top Shop (A super fun Monopoly/Sim Tower board game). ~$40 CIB
-Runabout 2 (An extremely fun arcade driving game with great detail to the levels. The first game Felony 11-79 is also good.) ~$40 CIB
-SledStorm (Once popular but forgotten game that has to be played to be appreciated. It just feels so good to play. Best snow machine game in existence.) ~$10
-Warpath Jurassic Park (A very fun Dinosaur fighting game exclusive to PS1 that is full of nostalgic JP vibes. Great graphics too.) ~$60 CIB
-Street Racer (An okay kart racer. But man is it beautiful and cheap.) -$10 CIB

You couldn't play ps1 games from a ps2 memory card BUT you could store them there. And they barely used any of it's memory. So you could use your ps2 memory card to switch out the ps1 memory card roster by transferring back and forth. Like a huge memory reservoir
Did you also know a ps5 controller works on a ps3 if you plug them in?

So many great IPs from the SNES carried over to the PS1 and is why I consider it the spiritual succesor to the SNES. You can't save PS1 files to PS2 memory cards but you can store files on them. An odd feature that almost no one uses.

I bought the Classic as never experienced any of those games only certain PS1 games (GT, Spyro, Crash Racing, Scrabble, Millionaire, I don't have a lot on me so they were all new to me) even when used PCSX or DuckStation to play particular ones which is what I do play niche games I don't care for the big ones really but with the Classic I didn't mind that. So seemed suitable for me to get it even regardless of PAL/NTSC as live in PAL so didn't bother me (nor do unsuccessful products anyway bother me) just experiencing the games. Not added more games to it yet though. I think it's a fine selection even besides the licenses but of course adding more makes sense.
