    I liked how you highlighted these eastereggs that Porsche made for these manual-equipped GT3s. To have those functions you mentioned James, must've costed Porsche quite a lot of money to develop, so hope the take-rate of the 991 AND upcoming 992 GT3s with manual will be high enough to make Porsche justify developing them! Perhaps the no-lift-shift applies to the 911R too? The way the gear knob is mounted (up relatively high) reminds me of that from the Carrera GT, brilliant.

      Porsche has done an amazing job upgrading their manual cars for both track heads and normal everyday drivers. I think features like this make manual cars less intimidating to those trying to learn. Makes it a lot easier not sacrificing daily drive-ability with the manual opposed to the PDK.

    You should try a motorcycle with an up & down quickshifter. No clutch at all. Just bang it through the sequencial gearbox for up shifts and down shifts. Clutchless up shifts used to be something to master. Clutchless down shifts though really mess with your mind if you have any mechanical sympathy.

    • @timothy9596
      @timothy9596 5 лет назад +2

      I've been clutchless shifting for at least 30 years. Someone showed it to me in the late '80s and it was a revelation. Over time I found clutchless downshifting to be useful, but it's completely dependent on if the bike likes it. Most sportbikes I've owned loved to be clutchless up and downshifted. But some brands like the only Triumph I've owned hated it and would almost always lock up the rear for a split second. My next bike will have both up and down auto for sure.

    • @ardijanuar2036
      @ardijanuar2036 5 лет назад +2

      Quickshifter can also apllied to a car with sequential gearbox with dog ring engagement. With normal syncros you at least have to lift or press the clutch if you don't want to grenading your gearbox.

      Agreed, but a lot of cars can do that now. And auto blip has been around for quite some time in other cars. It's really cool, but there's nothing like getting heel-toe just right. Part of the fun of a manual. But most people who drive manuals don't even know how to rev match, they just eff their clutches without knowing any better.

    It’s interesting to me that this has taken so long to catch on to cars but this no lift shift function has been on racing motorcycles for over 20 years. A sensor is activated by the shift lever and the ignition is interrupted while the shift happens. That’s a bolt on kit you can add to any motorcycle. Today the top bike brands have it integrated but it’s been a common racing function for decades.
    I like your presentation and enthusiasm for the brand! I think it’s great to inform the car community about these features and demonstrate them in detail. I like your common sense approach to breaking the cars down to what they are and how best to use them from daily drivers to track weapons. Great job, keep,it up and I want to know more about the MR Tuning package!!

    Enjoyable video James! Its amazing how a gearbox choice can dramatically change the character to the car - in the case of this 991.2 GT3, the rhythm of the driver going from gear-to-gear is very different from the PDK (gear ratios most likely play that part) and heck the mechanical noises (e.g whines) from the transmissions are different from the PDK too.

  • @mqandil
    @mqandil 5 лет назад +3

    Another epic video. This amazing gearbox can only be fully appreciated, if you experience it in person. I am so glad you are covering this amazing feature “no lift shift” as there is hardly any reviewers covering it. You sir are the first to do so... well done. Few of us who experienced and appreciated this feature early on, often wondered why no one is covering this epic experience, and I suspect you really have to own the car, to appreciate it, as it is counterintuitive and you must give it time to adapt your brains around it which is a luxury most reviewers don’t have as they are given the car for couple of hours to do a full review and most of them miss it, or possibly don’t fully appreciate it, given the short time they have with the car. Furthermore speaking to many GT3 owners with manual transmission, I am shocked to learn most are not aware of it, or some heard of it but have not experienced it, as no one has ever covered this feature at length. I am glad you are covering one of the most hidden treasures of this car. Well done, Mark

    James, when I was a teen I had a manual transmission Chevy truck and learned the ratios where I could upshift and downshift without the clutch but did lift off the throttle to relieve the pressure from the gears. Only used the clutch to obviously stop and go. Later on when I married, my wife had a Beetle and I did the same thing in it. Never had another manual. Just a boring automatic American with the exception of two Toyota’s.

    The no-lift shift just feels so wrong, but it works! We used to "speed-shift" our cars back in high school, with not a lot of concern about potential engine damage, strictly because of ignorance and the fact they were usually beaters anyway. It's nice to know you can do it with impunity on this car. The auto blip on downshifts is nice while you're getting to know the GT3, because the pedal placement is not ideal for some folks style of heel-toe throttle matching. You see a lot of GT-3's with the after market throttle pedal extension to help those of us that roll our foot. Also nice while learning a new track, as James mentions. One less thing to think about...

    I have a 981 GT4 and I use the auto blip rev match 50/50. If I'm driving in the city etc or just cruising it is is great. And for track days, I'm not the best at heal toeing and am still developing my technique, so it's great for that. Why not have the option if you want it. If you don't like it, then just don't use it. That simple.

    This solves the dilemma for me regarding ball-n-ball shifting. On my 997.1 S, I had the brake pedal repositioned to make it on the same plane with the accelerator pedal. It was soooo good that it was far quicker than heal-&-toe, which required an awkward movement of the ankle and therefore less micro adjustment when putting pressure on said pedal.
    I think that this is a game changer for many people and lets them drive fast with more confidence and assuredness.

    I just got a 991.2 GT3 and this is the first I heard about flats shifting. In the old days, we called this speed shifting where you kept you foot planted on the gas and banged your foot on the clutch and jammed the gear at the same time. No safety for overrevs.

    Love my GT3....but GM has had "no-lift-shift" since over 10+ years ago in the ZR1 and manual Gen 2 CTSV lol. This isn't new earth-shaking tech.

    Incredible show of differences between the 3, revmatching can teach you audibly how it should sound whilst learning, and protect the the gearbox when driving home tired from the circuit 😊

    It's because when you keep the throttle pinned for the mili second u compress the clutch and release again, u have unburned fuel that need to be burned. Hence the bang when flatshifting

      Actually it closes the throttle body.

    I had no lift shift in my 2010 STi 8 years ago (thanks to Cobb). Though now I have a 997 4.0, and it doesn't have no lift or Auto blip. Gotta heel-toe and lift on upshifts. It's a car I'll never sell. I am looking to get rid of my HPE800 CTS-V for a M5 Competition.

    @mrjww as you said, matching rev sounds wrong but while I learn the technique I wouldn't mind it. Also, "that moment when you get the email notification that you dropped a video while already watching it" ;) 💪🏻

      Downshifting you should always be matching revs. Saves your clutch even on a road car.

    I tried this before on a normal gearbox before. They use this on drag racing back home in the Philippines.

    The poppy, burbly sound you mention towards the end is the computer holding the revs for the next gear while you shift. Sort of like a variable rev limiter.
    Try a no-lift shift but do it slowly and notice the revs drop to where they need to be for the next gear and the computer holds it and burbles away :)

    Found that really interesting. Not so much on the rev matching but the flat shift is sublime 😍👌🏻

      Red matching is nice when you're daily driving and wearing dress shoes that are stiff, or clunky shoes that make it more difficult. But I agree, there's nothing like mastering heel-toe rev matching.
