Today I'm driving a Porsche 911 GT3. Always a good day, although I haven't always gelled with the previous GT3s. The 997 in particular never worked for me due to the gearbox and engine combo. The 991.1 I absolutely loved and thought PDK worked well for it, but what is the 991.2 like with the six speed manual - and can it compare to the drama of my recently acquired Ferrari 430 Scuderia?

Hi James. How heavy did u find the clutch
Hi James
Do you like this more than the Ferrari 599?
I know how long geared these are and I know how high up the rev range you got.. Naughty boy :P
Incredible car. Sounds like motoring perfection.
agree with this review. sold my 458 for one of these and never looked back. the engine, the manual, the 10 years newer tech, chassis, suspension... it almost annoying how good the .2 gt3 manual is at everything.
agree my 991.2 GT3 Touring is a keeper
458 Ferrari sounds pretty good but I must admit I love my 991.2 GT3 with pdk and straight thru Akrapovic system. Going up and down those gears is a joy and I love wringing it’s proverbial neck 👍
I think you captured that flat six noise better than any other youtube video I've ever seen. It sounds evil.
Thanks John, the sound here is fairly accurate too - it really does sound that bonkers!
Yep
@@JayEmmOnCars just the sound makes me so exciting
I’m picking up one of these cars on Monday. Same spec. Does it really sound like this? Stock exhaust? I really hope so!
@@adamstrong6064 how have you been enjoying it 6 months later?
If you need me, I’ll be in the classifieds and finance calculators… crying
At least we are not alone 😭
Me too!
Buy lottery tickets and when you win, don't forget to wave to me as you pass me in your new 991.2 GT3 manual 😃
8:42 Pretty much sums up why I adore this car/presenter combo'...even deaf people can enjoy this review.
Was just about to comment the exact same thing 😂
Very funny 😆. My sentiments exactly!
Gosh that Porsche naturally aspirated flat six the it makes is glorious
I was never a big Porsche fan until I drove one, heard that and bought it ☺ Not a GT3 though, I'm not rich...
Well luckily, I got my hands on 981 flat 6 , in 2014, and I'm not letting go. When they all go "electric" it will be sorely missed. Cheers.
@@itguru2037 With the EU emissions regulations, already codified into law, there isn't a choice. However polls show that 80% of EU residents are against outlawing internal combustion engine cars. Cheers.
@@itguru2037Porsche is built in Germany and Austria, and as such have to follow EU emissions laws and regulations.. Cheers.
When you experience one, you can comprehend why they are raved about to such an extent... the first time I had a go in one, I was absolutely blown away, even after managing my expectations beforehand.
After driving my cousin's 991.1 GT3 RS, despite having very lofty expecations, they were smashed into oblivion. Now my life is figuring out the fastest way for me to be able to own one.
@@AlexQuail...and this is why I'm conflicted when offered to drive something above my league... On one hand you get to experience something you wouldn't normally experience but on the other hand it leaves an itch I cannot reach 😭

As the current owner of a 991.2 GT3 6MT, I agree completely. The 4.0L engine with solid valvetrain and 6MT combination is probably the best in the business.
Also lower cost of ownership and less stress & heartache than the Ferrari, by quite a lot I'd imagine? Less interest from the police too. Pretty much the perfect weekend car.
The car has been flawless. No reliability issues whatsoever, no squeaks, functions perfectly.
I definitely think the 991.2 looks better than the 992. Love the touring
I agree. I think the 991 cars are the best looking of the water cool Porsches.
god i absolutely love the sound of this car
the fact that a 4l 6cyl goes up to 9k rpm is quite insane
This is the car I’d love to move up to from my GT4. Personally I think it looks better the the 992 version, not nearly as bulky looking, and I’m a big fan of the 991 interior. Just hoping prices moderate a bit going into next year vs the currently craziness. They’ve softened a bit on Bring a TraIler lately, so hopefully that continues
Would be curious to hear your comparisons with your handling preferences from the midengined car, and the rear engined car.
I gave in and test drove the .2 GT3 then subsequently sold my 981 GT4, which is the best car I have owned. I found the GT3 a marginally better car overall, the engine is better and it felt considerably quicker. However, when you consider cost, the GT4 is a better value car. I also have my fingers crossed for a softening in GT3 prices. I find £150k for a 4 year old car with 5k miles too much to justify.
I fear the prices won’t soften throughout 2022. If you can get one near its MSRP, then I can recommend going for it totally. I only drove my 911 Turbo for fun so moving into the 991.2 GT three it’s a small step back in speed, but a huge step up in fun. Cheers
Hi, interesting comment that I thought I'd share my experiences with you. I just sold my 997.1GT3, waiting for my 992GT3 which is delayed, so for a daily I went and bought a new GT4. Been a 911 driver for 32 years, so it was a step backwards in my mind. NOT at all. The GT4 is an incredible car, for country or hills driving it is faster than nay of my 911s. It is so planted and quick around corners. As for the track, maybe not as fast as a 991 GT3, but certainly faster than my 997, and by a lot. I do not regret buying it, and may not trade it on my 992 now..... eek. I still have a 993 Turbo, and nothing compares to this, it is pure drives car and experience. The GT4 tall gearing is fine, you learn to drive twisties differently, certainly no worse than the gearing in a 997 (as Jay even elludes to)
@@jamescarson6681 Hi Joji, commented to 993mike if interested, below, thx
I ran my Scud alongside a 991.1 RS and they approach the going fast exciting bit in very different ways. You can’t say one is better than the other. What I will say though is that the Porsche feels indestructible and after 18k miles and lord knows how many launches, it hasn’t missed a beat. You can’t say that about the Ferrari which always felt like it would throw a big bill at you. Great video and say hi to George & Caitlin. I owe him a spin in the Phantom …
Are you still keeping your SCUD? im now thinking if I should replace mine with a 991.1 RS for the same reason. Dont want to wait until the big bill shows up.
Exactly why my GT3 Touring is a ‘forever’ car… never experienced anything like it before or after. Porsche gave me a 991.2 GT3 RS for the day and I liked the looks but it was a numb experience in the road (I’m sure on track it would be brilliant) they then said try a Touring… OMG, such a different experience and feeling, I was sold after the first gear change. Now done the best 5000km of my life. It’s now the benchmark and the only car I’m looking to add to the garage now is a 458 Speciale, which comes close but in a different way. In 10+ years with hybrid/electric/automatic etc the 991.2 cup engine with manual will be £500k
Perfect car
Perfect roads
Perfect weather
Looked liked a day to remember you jammy bugger !
This is the best Porsche IMHO. The 3.8 in the 991.1 GT3 is a hand grenade, but the 4.0 is the enduro racing engine.
THE best GT3 in my book. 9000rpm, manual 'box, simple yet intimidating design, proper interior. If I got the money I'd get a Touring in elegant colour like Albert Blue or go mad with something like Rubystone or Yellow Green.
Hands down the greatest video you've ever produced. I have never seen such s reaction from you.
Love to see someone actually and honestly gushing over a car. So many people have this either fake, exaggerated reaction; or an "yeah, I'm so cool, I've driven so many cars, it's ok I guess" kind of nonsense. Because I know you will always be honest about a car, and I know how a true car enthusiast reacts... honestly, this just made my day watching you beaming with joy 😁
Gotta be honest otherwise what's the point?
Wow. This is a dream car for me. This review is the final straw. I need one. And I need one now.
There’s something rather satisfying about watching a video of someone driving a German car whilst wearing a t-shirt covered in Spitfires.
Great review though, Porsche were really at their best for this generation.
I had a 996.2 GT3 and absolutely loved it. But your comment about the Mezger feeling wrong unless you're absolutely on it, is spot on! Curious about this 991.2 GT3 now!
I bought one of these because of this review and couldn’t be happier. Thanks for the advice.
Great review Jay. I always enjoy watching your videos but really loved this one.. you really captured the qualities of this very special car . The 991.2 GT3 manual is a masterpiece
The wheels on this car are really cool wow!!! Sounds good too those inside clips
James, great review, thank you. Your original feature on the 991.1 GT3, white 64 plate was originally my car. I fell out with it because of the damping harshness on UK roads, especially out in the country side. Now have the 991.2 and completely agree that the ride is much improved, making it more enjoyable to drive enthusiastically. It feels and is safer as a result in my opinion. The mid range induction roar on the 4.0ltr is something else, but may be hard to capture as it is really noticeable from the inside.
In my quest to decide on buying the 991.2 gt3 I’ve watched pretty much all of the videos out there
- I must say that this video captured the sounds and excitement of the car better than any of them
Happy to say I found a gem of a car with low miles mint paint and next to no track use. Basically a garage princess.
Your video was great and helped me make the decision to write a big check on a dream car. Well done!
8:42 - love the creative way to cut out the audio of the swear word. I was nervous to watch this video, as it is one of my dream cars (on the higher end of the spectrum), despite not being a left-field choice at all. Pleasantly surprised with James' verdict on the steering feel of the EPAS system. Sounds like the gear ratios aren't too terribly long either. I wonder if the folding carbon seats that TheCarGuys Damian's GT3 Touring has would be more comfortable... I am an introvert who'd still appreciate its mechanical sound that crescendos to 9000rpm, so the subtle Touring that retains the 911 silhouette, in Paint-to-sample 'Viola Metallic' or 'Oak Green Metallic' would be 'the creme of the creme' for me.
Imagine a GT3 Touring in something like Slate Grey or Bali Blue with Tarpan Brown leather interior, tartan fabric seat centre and the Sport Plus comfort seat. That, I would daily drive.
What a Machine ...i Loved Hearing You Compress The Clutch Which Results In That Break Of Glorious SOUND Of The Flat Six Which Adds To The Drama Of Every Gear Shift ... Fantastic Production ... Thank You Sooo Much Jay For Sharing This German Engineered Monster From Porsche GT ... Bravo Porsche Bravo
Wow wow wow indeed Jay , that engine sounds amazing . Great review , stunning Porsche .
What an awesome car. Thanks for showcasing it. The division 2 Scotland team are the best. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
The first minute of the video said everything. What a machine this is . The cacophonous symphony of exhaust, turbo and intake, and valve train building in a crescendo then shift and it all begins again. Brilliant!
Wait is it NA? Was that whistling sound just from the intake? 9000 rpm makes me grin compulsively
I really hope that I will be able to afford one of these one day. Though I worry that in about 5-10 years when stuff like this truly stop being made because of regulation, the prices of these will shoot up like crazy.
Wow is right! You just gave a new definition of the word serious! Thanks James
Based on this review, I started looking at this exact same model after I failed to buy another track oriented car from McLaren … and bought such a GT3 in GT Silver with manual and all goodies like roll cage and bucket seats for tracking.
First drove it decently yesterday and wow is this an experience. I’ve owned 911 GTS, recent AM Vantage and McL 12C spider before and I can honestly say this GT3 is up there with the best in terms of drivers experience. Of course it is not as fast as the McLaren… but it actually feels faster, more direct and the manual gear changing is soo satisfying!
It is less comfortable so I won’t be taking this one on a week trip to the Alps because of the low WAF… but certainly has reasonable comfort for such a racy car.
So this kind of review and many positive comments of owners, can change one’s mind so thank you all!
The peace of mind knowing that whenever the British weather falls favourable on a Sunday for a blast on few A_B roads , the Porsche is ready to go. And once you’ve had your Sundays pleasures and covered many glorious and happy miles in your 991.2 GT3 you quite simply tuck it away in your shed, for a Breathe interval, knowing its ready for the next pleasurable blast in the worlds finest sports car.
I wonder if he like this car? Jeez, your enthusiasm for this car is awesome! ‘Full stop….hands down…right onto the podium, one of the best cars ever’. Your review was great, your subject matter certainly helped. Cheers mate
I like some of your vids, but not all, however @ 8:42 you've just re-engaged me... Keep it up sir...
Thank you James, for a great video.
I would get one of these if I could. Pretty much top of the list. Not sure it will ever happen, but we'll see!
An absolutely, absolutely, absolutely...absolutely nice review JayEmm.
loved the emotion and visceral feelings it evoked of being in a GT3, as I experienced it for the first time. Well done.
Track day repairs on a Ferrari, $10,000.
Track day repairs on a PORSCHE, 1 qt oil.
Sounds amazing. Drove my Dad's 981 Boxers S the other day and although not the fastest thing in the world that 3.4 flat six puts the ultimate smile on your face. GT3 is a dream car.
The enthusiasm of the delivery is infectious and that sound... Great vid 👍
You're right about the 997, my C2S 997.1 needed a lot hard pushing to get the best out of it, you needed to keep it in high revs to get it moving
Great to see, someone reviewing something that totally wins them over. Fantastic
The tyres are Dunlop that will be why it's loosing grip. I had Dunlops on my car at one point and quickly changed them to P4S.
@J B Perhaps but they are far better then Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2 which is what I had previously. My car had less power then then at 400HP but more torque at 412ftlbs. P4S are good in the wet, cold and the summer at least they are on my car.
100%, the Dunlops are terrible tyres unless you like losing traction regularly.
@@DrJonathanWitt I lost traction going around a normal bend that I can take at 50mph in anything but lost traction once in the Dunlops. After that I got rid of them. Shit tyre if you ask me esspecially considering the price they are asking.
@J B I'm curious if you have compared Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport with Michelin PS4S?
@J B I didn't know Dunlop was owned by Goodyear.
Appreciate the commentary and the theatrics portrayed by that 9A1 screamer engine. Beautifully done video. We are completely allowed to have different opinions (which makes the world less boring), but I'm still confused to why Tim (Shmee) never got attached to his 991.2 GT3. One thing he did mention was that he liked the chassis balance of his Cayman GT4s, so perhaps he wasn't really a fan of the 'pendulum' characteristic (exaggerated term perhaps for the post 997 era) that you would get from rear engined cars. Perhaps the double wishbone front suspension in the 992 GT3s have rectified/eradicated that common critique of understeer that 911s of yesteryear would get.
Great video mate. Love your passion in this one. And that engine….👌🏽👌🏽
Sir this is the best car I have seen you enjoy driving! No doubt! What a sound 🙌🏾
Would love to see you review the 992 GT3!
FANTASTIC video, love the exhaust recordings you overlay 🎉
Brilliant car, one of the few modern cars I would consider buying as Porsche have stuck with a magical high revving naturally aspirated engine and give the option of a brilliant manual box or the equally impressive PDK dual clutch. I had a mildly modded 996 GT3 and the gearbox was great but I agree with Jay about the 997 GT3 gearbox. I found is stiff and rather slow, not remotely enjoyable to use.
Great Video, great sound capture of that glorious flat 6!!!
Really good video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Great video, like i’ve said 2 times before you should have more than 1 million subs, thanks for putting a smile every time.
Wow, thank you!
I love that they kept the original beetle shape.
Still own a .1 GT3 that I regularly track and adore, but I’m really considering trading her in for a .2 manual.
My favorite car reviewer reviewing my favorite car. Today is a good day, and I must own one of these in my life!
JayEmm, I think you do very informative videos and I enjoy them, especially how you have recorded the audio of the cars. I owned from new in Sydney both, Club Sports as well as first in Australia, a 1999, 996 GT3 (daily driver) and a 2001 996 GT2 (that was Tracked 80% and initially delivered with steel brakes) and I don t remember the gear boxes being anything but the finest from Weisech.
I love it when you are balls-out enthusiastic! Forget any of the less than praiseworthy comments I may have made about your youthfulness, and your post-analogue-era birth date, i.e., not growing up with the unfettered machinery of the 60s-80s etc. That you are obviously gob-smacked by what at least looks and sounds like as much of a not-so-digitally-enhanced speed machine as you are going to find - at this time - as this, with a PROPER gearbox (and no down-change throttle blips, leaving it to you, not sensors and so on), confirms to my mind that you are not some ordinary snot-nosed upstart - I never thought that really, but for dramatic effect (-; - and it is a delight to see you amazed by the pure experience of driving what sounds close to perfection, in such a type of vehicle. I LOVE the way your face looks as you at least try to get to the red line! Sounds like you hardly need a gearbox with such a spread of revs. I bet you can get from nought to 100 mph in second gear alone (for us engineering nerds, I always work out the speed per redline/gear ratio as a way of entering the actual engineers' heads re-optimal gearing and red lines/first significant torque-entry revs/optimal torque/end of best torque etc etc. This obviously matters with regard to road types the driver is most likely to encounter or choose). Porsche obviously chose the ratios well, mated to this powerplant. Thanks for the wide-eyed report, love it!
Props to you for not saying anything during the first minute so we could enjoy the lovely sound!
Great show from you man. What an amazing thing those gt3's are. If I had the bucks I would go right after a 991 speedster.
These cars are absolute weapons, no question about it. Plus you can drive them as hard as you like. I got rid of mine though, because it's just too fast for the street. If you're in a place with some great tracks, this might be the perfect car though - because that's where it deserves to be driven!
Absolutely love your content Jay, so well made and insightful. Keep up the great videos!
Incredible sounding car and you've captured the sound amazingly not many ppl on yt can get audio on videos right you always seem to get it pretty spot on
dream car. 9k rpm naturally aspirated in three pedals in a gorgeous shell. this is a unicorn among modern cars.
Wow, wow, wow. 9k and a huge smile. What a noise the GT3 makes. Loved Jay's review.

Thanks for making me love a car that I'll never be able to afford... again
Agree same for me not a replacement for the 458 but certainly a car I would love to put alongside it. Problem for me is 991.1 GT3 RS or 991.2 GT3 as for me the 991.1 GT3 RS is the best looking 911 ever, especially in colours like signal yellow or ultra violet or a 991.2 GT3 for the manual. I can't afford to add one right now next to the 458 so I went with a 987.2 Spyder manual which has blown me away, wow WOW WOW what a car, hydraulic steering epic manual and only 1275kg could potentially be one of the best if not best b road cars I've driven, the roof is a faff but it adds to the drama and they are super super rare cars now. In short an even lighter version of Cayman R!
I agree with you . I have a Ferrari 458 spider and a 991.2 GT3 manual . Great drivers cars and keepers for the long term . All the best 😁🙏
Bought one without driving one, based on all the great reviews......and.....it's absolutely fabulous. You were spot on
Great... now I have to rethink my original dream 996 GT3 Porsche and somehow double that amount of money because this is even more awesome and good... Thanks Jay, no really ;-).
That engine scream/howl is simply awesome. WOW!
to drive it past 9/10th is to understand and appreciate how pure and raw
Great video 👍🏻 Enjoyed it very much. I like how in the intro my subtitles say "[Music]" when there’s just the GT3’s engine noise 😀👍🏻
One of your best reviews to date in my opinion
Wow what a car and wow you lucky boy,I have watched the video over and over thanks for making me happy.
Was lucky enough to have a drive of a mates pdk version at Phillip Island. He has an akrapovic titanium exhaust on it. A moment that will never leave me; foot buried to the firewall, engine screaming and 251kmhr on the speedo before a BIG braking effort into turn 1 😂 only just made it to 251, couldn't carry max speed into the final corner due to Cape barren geese helping themselves to a feed just on the inside of the entry kerb...don't want to hit one of those. The car makes you feel like an absolute hero, so precise, so capable, effortless
Awesome footage and Content. 997.1 clutch is a race clutch comming directly from GT1 and was Designer to stand a 24h race. It is doing exactly what it was designed for, hence no design flaw or bug 😂
How could someone not like this video? It's brilliant!
Out of all the cars you have drove this and and a couple of other Porches/Amg’s are the only cars I would have, Ferrari’s, lotus and the like, you can keep em.
Which AMG’s did you like that much?
Had to rewind multiple times to 06:50 "Sweet Mary.... Mother of God...." 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
That's a perfect intro James!
What a car!
Hmmm. I can appreciate that the 992 variant is better in every which way than the 997, which is what is to be expected, but we are talking 14 years of refinement! My 997.1 GT3 is very raw and that is what makes it different to the 991 or 992 as it is not a car that most would take to the shops. It’s a car that requires proper effort to drive and that’s the difference. The newer GT3’s allow you to decide to put the effort in or not, something the 997 doesn’t…..and that for me is what I love as it is so uncompromising.
The gearshift is dodgy but extremely mechanical, clutch super heavy and you hear every grain of sand flick up under the car, but it’s sometimes the imperfections that make a car great in my eyes.
Feel free to pop over and drive it, here in Dubai. 😉
Always understood how capable Porsches' were, but never wanted one..until now! Excellent video, and the sound that thing makes is biblical! 😍👌
It probably is more exciting…. Because it’s a manual. People really underestimate the importance of changing gear by hand.
Yes! & my left foot likes to part of my driving experience
Donald W Henry Catchpole captures the magic of Porsche GT + Manual in his video "Manuals Matter". Brilliant. We are fortunate indeed to have such eloquent enthusiasts such as JayEmm and Henry.
Can’t disagree but that PDK in this car is bloody great too!!
Both hands and feet all busy simultaneously, nothing better.
Even with PDK this thing is fan-bloody-tastic. I got a taster on a GT3 RS. That PDK is utter madness in the way it shifts. You just think of touching the paddle and it changes. Absolute madness. Coupled with that howling DFI engine and it's a crack on 4 wheels.
Would love me a manual 991.2 GT3 Touring, though.
Hope you also enjoyed the road you used for this test . It’s one of my favourites just outside my home town .keep up the great work .

12:43 - so good
I guess you do need a 911 now, a boxster isn't enough anymore 😂
Only cos the cayman gt4 doesn’t have the same engine
That’s the one thing that drives me insane about this car, every single car he drives it feels like he’s going above and beyond to say how ‘quite brilliant’ it is. He literally never gives a fair report, will say a negative but quickly brush it away with a positive. I don’t really consider him a reviewer, but merely someone who showcases cads
@@nicholasfrawley824 @Nicholas Frawley are you kidding? I understand what he says, when he speaks about the 911 not being that special or thrilling he was talking about the gt3 or gt3 variants, he was mostly talking about carreras. When someone loves cars, you ultimately like most of them even the bad ones but he has very clearly bashed some new models like the Cayman gts, he recently roasted the AMG gt 4 door!! Do you even watch the videos? I'm dont need to defend the creators I like or answer trolls but for God's sake, he even critiqued heavily the new huracan which is a dream car for most of us 😂🤦♂️
@@nicholasfrawley824 You're clueless if you think James is an easily impressed person who regularly does complimentary verdicts on cars, like most other video creators. You should watch more of his things to get an informed opinion.
I eventually sold my 991.2 GTS because I couldn’t really get an opportunity to use its performance without endangering my licence. God knows what driving the GT3 must be like - but I’d love to find out!
I've got this same car and this video doesn't show how good the noise is. His excitement is based on the noise he's hearing inside but bizarrely he plays the sound outside the car to illustrate it! James, you need to get much better mics inside the car and use that to show off the noise, then people will understand how good it is. It's such an important aspect of why this car is so great to drive.I agree with you it sounds incredible, for me only a Lamborghini v10 sounds better.
People prefer the exterior exhaust noise, getting accurate sound from inside doesn't really translate well on video
Fantastic!! Love the engine bleeping out your reaction!!
To non-Porsche people like me, the naming conventions, model ranges, and differentiations from car to car with Porsches are utterly unfathomable.
