Seeing how I grew up with all these engines... Here's my top 5: #1. 289 HiPo, sweet high revving reliable engine. #2 351 Windsor, just a stout motor. #3 302 Boss, Cleveland heads canted valves:) #4 429/460 Lima, it's a 302 Boss on steroids:) and #5 390 FE, FE's was the work horse engine back in the day, 352, 360, 390, 427 SOHC. And Honorable mention: 300 strait 6, just a stump puller of a motor:)

@@bstfordchannel923 the only reason I would not choose the 302, is short rod and on early engines the piston skirts would tend to crack on a higher mileage engine. Where the 289 had a longer rod and I never found a cracked skirt even though the engines use the same piston.
A 289 in similar trim, cam, heads, intake, carb, exhaust, as a 302, the way to best describe, snappier and revs quick. And I like that about the 289.

I will put it simple, I am a 289, 302, 5.0 fan first then the newer Coyote Motors. I Street Raced Light to Light I called it, I also do rolling starts, but Off the Line was where my 1966 Mustang Shined. I used all three motors in my Mustang. Coupled with a 4 Speed and 4:62-1 Gears in an Modified 8" rearend. I had many Tricks in my Mustang to make it one of the Quickest in Town. I had an an offenhaser Tunnel, that I took the Ram off of, I bored a 3/4" Aluminum Plate to accept 2 BBL adapter plates and I put 2-2BBL FORD Autolite carbs on it. The Throttle response was instant with Great Low End Torque. I had 351 4 Barrel heads C9OE Stock bore blocks. I would get a high lift cam and then Advance the cam to get more lowend torque. I KNOW I Embarrassed more than a few people. One of my favorites was the night a Red Trans Am pulled up next to me, They were pointing and chuckling. I brought my RPMS up to 2500 and dropped the Clutch, I had Super Sports G-60 15s She stuck like glue and I shot way out in front on them, I could hear his RPMs soaring as his tires were up in smoke. I was already at the next light and they rolled up, Faces Red as the car and they would not even look my way. I had that car for 33 years from 1974 to 2007. I miss her Everyday.

I had a Ford mentor, the Late Ted Haywood. He built a 289 pulling 504 HP at 9krpm. Raced it all season long in NASCAR. He was Black flagged at Daytona for running a 167.86 MPH lap speed and over 200 on the back stretch. They told him "that ain't no 289, that's a 427 SCJ!" "we're going to have to tech it!" he said OK climbed out and layed on the hood. They asked him to get off so they could do their work. He said you ain't touching it till it's cold. They finally got it apart, measured everything and said it looks right. We'll have to build and dyno it. He said you are not building my motor. After another lengthy discussion he built it (in private) and they ran it on the dyno. 504 at 9,000. This was 1958 technology. Once working for Smokey didn't hurt him any. ;-) I think he earned Mech of the Year for that one.

@@bstfordchannel923 Money. Real simple. Once sponsors surpassed survivable donations to lucrative multi million dollar contracts, the love of the sport was over and the love of money took front seat.
Ted was unofficially sponsored by Ford. Mostly pistons and rods. Maybe some tires from a manufacturer here and there, but mostly you had to fund yourself. Now the engines are over $100k and the average fan could never dream of hitting the track in his own car. Kinda takes the "sport" out of it for the self builder. "Cleanliness was next to Godliness" was his building motto. Raced SCCA, and Nascar. He was hard core about following the rules. Amazing isn’t it? The 360 was so under stressed that you couldn’t hurt it. If you were to put a 390 crank and rods in it, the mileage would be about the same because of the efficiency. The 360 pistons could be reused provided the bores are good. I have done this and you would love it. I wish that the 360 had the pistons come up closer to the deck and head squish area. But I have had a few go to 300,000 like the 300-I6. Ford Iron must have been special in those two engine families. There are people who could shatter an anvil, but used as work trucks and maintained decently, they can be coated with grease and still work just fine.

Ford 4 speed top loader and 373 gears in the rear end.
I went through 2 motor mounts, 2 clutches,2 rear ends, before I learned how to drive it properly. Best memories wheelies,.. and the looks people would give you when you beat them in a race.I do not know how much horsepower it had but I did beat 455 formula firebird with it "barely".... and almost beat a ford 428 cobra jet mustang, the scariest car I,ve owned. Total price I paid $500 for a $5000 engine the guy said to take out of his because it scared him, $1500 for a mustang. I did all the restoration work on it, and it only cost me about 5 - 6 thousand dollars total back then, I am glad I outgrew that hobby because today -------50 60 thousand dollars easy.if I recall correctly it did 60 miles an hour in 3 - 4 seconds and today is resting in many pieces...............

Excellent video. I’ve been into Fords since 1980. Somebody asked me what my favorite Ford engine was and I really couldn’t answer the question because they made so many great engines. Modern touring cars in Australia, modern NASCAR, modern off-road racing, modern road racing, modern boat racing etc, are still using Ford engines that were designed in the 1960s early 70s.
How many other car manufacturers can make this claim about their engines, very few if any. The boss 302, 5.0, 351 Cleveland boss, the 427 FE which won the 24 hours of Le Mans as did the 289 in the GT 40. Of course the overhead cam 427 FE which was banned from NASCAR for being too advanced, the supercharged 2003 mustang cobra engine, which is good for 800 hp what’s the stock internals. Even the new TwinTurbo V6 eco-boost engine, which won the 24 hours of Le Mans uses 70% stock components in the new GT 40 and other Ford racing cars that have won dozens of championships stock.
“RoushYates says the new EcoBoost race engine will utilize “60 to 70 percent” production components, including stock block, stock cylinder heads, stock crank and valvetrain.“

The bore to stroke ratio of the 289 seems to be ideal for putting out just the right amount of torque and power for its weight. The 271 HP @ 6,000 RPM, 289 HIPO was a downright screamer for its time. It's ability to rev so high was something else. Those things had a forged steel crankshaft, larger two bolt main caps and forged connecting rods with larger than normal 3/8 inch rod bolts vs. the usual 5/16 inch bolts. A beefy harmonic balancer was included along with a dual point distributor without a centrifugal vacuum advance. The heads were equipped with special cast-in valve spring pockets on the surface of the heads, but they weren't different than a standard 289 head otherwise.
I just happen to have a couple of 289 engines sitting in my storage unit right now, both just waiting for a freshening up even though they both run really good. If they had been 302s, I would have sold them by now, but since they're 289s I consider them as being special. It seems that they're scarce item today, I don't even see them on Craig's list anymore.
If you want to get the most out of a 289, I suggest going with a roller camshaft conversion. The cam profiles are much better than what you'll find with the flat tappet, (lifter) cams.
    My list of favorite Ford V8s: #1 the SOHC 427, #2 Boss 429 #3 FE427 side-oiler, #4 Boss 302, #5 289 HIPO
Since you're welcoming comments, I'm going to ramble. I'm an old fart that's always been a Ford guy. This brings to mind a favorite Ford that I once owned; a 1969 Ford Custom police package. Before I get into this, I had to eventually let it go because the rust was getting the best of it as it was exposed to the salt air of the Georgia and Florida coast during its police career and its years of life with me, as a Coast Guardsman. The cops must have ran the hell out of it and so did I, as this thing was fast and stable at speed; a pleasure to drive! I even found a couple of bullet holes in the trunk that had been bondoed over. It looked so much the part of an unmarked cop car that people would slow down when they saw it.
Now to the specifics, it was a special build from the Ford, Atlanta assembly plant, a 1969 2-dr. Ford Custom Police Interceptor with the Interceptor 429 engine and HD C6 transmission. For those who don't know, the Custom was the stripped down version of the full-size Galaxie. I bought this car at a police auction. It was used by the Glenn County Georgia Police for intercepting drug dealers on I-95, back in the day. I-95 was and still is a drug corridor going from south Florida up the east coast. This car was awesome in its appearance, since it was a 2 door post, void of the tacky chrome. It had dark tinted factory glass and a special, firm police suspension that allowed this big car to handle really well for its size. The suspension gave the car a certain forward rake that allowed it to look just plain mean sitting still. The factory tires were H70-15s, a wide set of tires for the day, the factory wheels had the dog-dish hub caps, too. This car was very rare since it was a two-door sedan version of the police interceptor. They made thousands of the 4-door versions, but this one was one rare special build. I still have dreams about this bad ass; I wish I could turn the clock back so that I could restore it and oh yeah, drive the shit out of it, again.

I love Clevelands in that when my car hits 4000 rpms its like it is in after burner it loves high rpms but the 289 is a great motor. Its sad they didn't have the after market parts back then they have today. They are little killers on the street and track when fitted for battle. FEs are now highly sought after . In fact now that they have lots of stroker kits for FEs even the peg leg 332s and 352s can make over 500 hp. And then there's the 427 SOHC. Its fame lives thru the current Coyote and Voo Doo engines.

I like the tall deck Windsor. Don't get me wrong the 302 is very versatile and fits as well as any LS. I just like the bore and stroke of the tall deck . If you poke and stroke the 351 you can get over 400 cubes and parts are cheap ( by Ford standards ) and you get a nice bumpy cam and tighten up the comp ....sounds sooooo good.

You only need look at my name to see where I am..so here is how I got there. Back in highschool auto mechanics class we took on a little experiment with some students cars. 1 dart with a 360, a early 70s Monte Carlo with a 350 and a Torino with a 351 Cleveland 2v. The baseline was agreed and the Torino was the "laziest". We did the routine bolt ons..cam, intake, carb and headers. The Torino woke up the best...I was so impressed that it sticks with me till this day ( over 30 years). I always wanted to get my hands on what some call the 400 fmx motor..it was produced 1 year and had the small block bell housing pattern.. would just love to tinker with it. Sorry if I got long winded.

I think as an overall package, money being an issue or not, the 335 series is probably the great all around performer. It will fit where most bigger engines like the FE and 385 won’t, yet produce comparable or even better numbers. A 4v performance orientated 400 would be a killer!

I also had two '65 Fairlanes, a four door sedan and a two door hardtop, with 289's. My for door had a 3 speed manual and it was a sleeper. Fooled a lot of guys back then. Wish I had one of those today. But alas...... I have a 6 cylinder mustang now. 3.7 with a 6 speed manual. It's fun too and gets good gas mileage and cheap insurance.

Ford 302, Chevy 302 & 327, Mopar 340 aka The Giant Killer. There is an interview with Don Garlits mentioning that in 1964 some 327 powered dragsters were "A terror!" and would rev over 9000 rpm and would occasionally beat a 392 Hemi!

I am partial to 460s had a 77 Grand Marquis in high school it was packing the 460 I beat the hell out of that car that motor was tough as nails and took everything thing a 17 year old kid could throw at it which was pedal to the floor 200 foot one wheel peels you name it. I had the exhausts coming off the manifolds glowing red several times and that engine really never let me down, she would really run on the top end, passed many a car at well over 100 mph honest to God and still accelerating good, my favorite has to be the 1970s 460 Ford anybody have any good stories about the Ford 460 in cars?

      @patrickjerzak2685 3 года назад

@@Stars-and-Stripes- Of course they did not have the same horsepower ratings as the originals everybody knows that, that said the cars they powered moved out decent with the torque and the horsepower ratings were net now instead of gross so there was not a 165 horsepower difference when you compare apples to apples. Had 4 total vehicles with the 460s in my life since 1988 have 1 still none are muscle cars but everybody knows that. Install a straight up timing chain in a post 72 460 and you will get some power back.

Carroll Shelby didn't mention a 302 because a 302 is not historically relevant to Carroll Shelby racing efforts in the mid Sixties, the 289 and 427 are. Though the 302 was put in to the updated Mk1 GT40 when it went back to Britian to have the overall win in 1968 and 1969 at Le Mans.
No.1 historical engine: The 302 bored .020 over for 304.5 cubic inches/4992cc. For Trans Am and the GT40.
No.1 modern cam in block V8: A Dart Alluminum 8.7 inch deck 302 block; 4.050 bore and 3.250 stroke equals 335 cubic inches/5489cc, 8500rpm limit, with 550 gross HP.

260 was before the 289 in production.
302 replaced the 289 early 68 production year to take advantage of a 5litre max displacement rule in scca , first were the 302 tunnel port along with the standard production heads then the Boss in 69.
351W came out 69 model year and 351C came out 71. The Windsor uses a head similar to the standard 302 head. The Cleveland uses a head loosely based on the Boss 302 head.

The 289 was a short stroke and it had higher compression with flat pistons due to smaller head displacement let you rev quicker and wind up faster. I built a 302 with a set of 289 heads flat top and hp 289 intake with a thumper cam. It sounded like a big block had lots of power but didn’t have the quick revs of the 289.

Reverse cams with gear drives on the others cancelled that advantage.

@@bstfordchannel923 you know it's frustrating being a dodge guy from way back. When I was a teenager in the 80's all my friends in mechanics class were either Ford or Chevy guys. I was definitely the odd man out. Now I see these old Mopars selling for insane prices, argggh!!! It is so infuriating. Especially when I know some of those guys buying old Mopars used to piss all over them back in the day. @@bstfordchannel923 Its a simple matter to make a 460 into a 429. The far more common 460 (1968-97) has the same 4.36 inch bore (larger than a Cadillac 500 @4.304) as the 429.
The difference is the 3.59 inch stroke in the 429 which makes for a more responsive engine than the 3.85 inch stroke of the 460. (thats the reason the big block was called a "385" series engine)
The pistons had a different pin height than the 460, but connecting rods are the same, so only the crankshaft and pistons need to be swapped.
Sealed Power made (possibly still available) a flat top with one valve relief piston for the 429, but is only available in .030 oversize. Post 1970 (429 and 460) blocks had a 0.015 taller deck height and need to be machined to the 1968-69-70 specification if original compression ratio is to be preserved.
Ive never seen an FE series 428 run as strong as a 429, and have driven cars equipped with both.

    #1 FE series
    #2 335 series
    #3 Fairlane/Windsor V8
    #4 385 series
Why this order? I am considering the merits of the engines for their time while also taking into account modern day.
FE series because they were stout and reliable in modest everyday use applications as well as performance variants. At the top of the line, there were the 360hp 352, the 401hp 390, 406, 427, 428. It is funny how people will dismiss the 352/390 as a dog especially in comparison to the 396 Chevy, but if Ford had given the same options and treatment to those mid 60s engines as GM had, would’ve been a different story, as proven by the HiPo FE variants of the earlier years. And then there is the SOHC 427. FEs also have a distinct sound unlike any other, and are beautiful in an engine bay.
335 series had the famous 351 Cleveland, and a 400 though viewed as a boat anchor to some, is just a tall deck Cleveland with loads of potential. Australian racing is my source for why this series is over the Windsor/Fairlane V8 on my list, besides being capable of making big block power at its time. Like the FE the sound is distinct, and they dress up more nicer than a Windsor.
The Windsor/Fairlane V8 gave Ford a much needed smaller option for their vehicles that gave good performance. They are easy to swap, because they are small in dimensions, and built with aluminum peices are probably the lightest of American v8s. Limit was always in the cylinder heads which has been taken care of by all the modern offerings. No doubt the HiPo 289 was a force to be reckoned with at its time. Today 302s and 351w can be Built to perform great, as their abundance allowed for a great expansion of the aftermarket, helping affordability. Boss 302 was a half breed of this and the 335 series which was introduced the next year.
385 series certainly confirms that there is no replacement for displacement, but performance was not the intent, save for the 429 Boss engine. Big numbers are easily achieved as they should with engines this size and the aftermarket also caters well. Though these engines are capable of probably the highest motor only numbers in total performance builds, because it’s to be expected is why it is ranked lower on my list.

From what I remember, a 289 in a racing Cobra or GT350R was good for 380 reliable horses. What Shelby said made since as the 289/302 was just “good enough” for the average Ford passenger car application. They never seemed motivated to improve the heads with bigger valves like Chevy did, except for on the racing circuit with the Trans Am 302 Tunnel Port before the Boss 302. The Boss was an awesome power maker at 7500 rpm, but not that great on the street for daily driving chores. The 302s in the Le Mans winning 68-69 GT40s had the Gurney Weatlake heads, that Ford finally picked up 30? years later as the GT 40 head. But for nostalgia and proven racing-winning heritage, I also give a nod to the 289. Nice video piece.

Honestly... if I *ever* get my health back, my plan is to build a Shelby Cobra replica with a 289 crank and rods in a late model Explorer 5.0 block with AFR heads.
I haven't decided between an Air Gap intake with a 1 inch spacer or EFI. Air Gap would come out cheaper, a good EFI plenum adds about 20ft lbs of torque around your normal cruising RPM, makes the 302 feel like a bigger engine.
We've already built a 400hp 289 pretty easily. AFR heads and a 270H cam, pulls to around 6800. The lighter Cobra replica could run a much hotter cam, not as much low end torque needed to keep it fun to drive.
With a small block the Cobra won't be as twitchy about breaking the tires loose nor will it be so nose heavy.

My favorite engine kinda depends on the use u have in mind but I'll give my run down by my favorites. Keep in mind I'm a truck guy. I do mud runs with the 70's f series trucks so I like high horsepower & rpms but torque is a must for me. My first love has to be the FE engines so first would be the 427. Then like I run in my mud truck the 385 series such as the 460. (Defanetly not stock) but then my favorite is (more for a car such as a 70 couger with a 4sp) is a 351 clevland then the 302 Boss then the 289 Hipo. The other engines fall in place kinda in between. I work with 390's & 460's the most. I love em!

The ford Daytona you keep showing was a 289 HP, Carol Shelby was working on putting a 427/8 (can't remember) in it until Ford asked Shelby to help with the gt-40. (there was one Daytona that had the big block in it but never made it past a prototype and was sold, the last I heard a Hollywood director or producer had it back in the 70's.) The Daytona was built for the super-speedway tracks ie Daytona where the Cobra was not able to keep up on the top end because aerodynamics. The 427 was used in the later GT-40's mainly due to the amount of torque it produced the drivers didn't have to downshift coming out of the corners to blow past the smaller engine cars. Now the Boss Series cars the 302 was a Trans-am car the 429 was a speedway car and the 351 was a drag car. The 427 sohc was originally for NASCAR/NHRA until NASCAR banned it, it was still allowed by NHRA so that is why you would see more drag cars than stock cars with this option. Now my favorite motor would be Mr Shelby's PERSONAL Cobra with a 428 with dual 4 barrel carbs AND dual Paxton superchargers was estimated this puppy put out 800+hp, also it was only one of two Cobras that had an automatic (Bill Cosby had the other made the same way as Shelby's he took it around the block and said it was TOO powerful and gave it back to Shelby, it was resold and the owner drove it off a cliff into the ocean and died) Shelby's car was clocked at inexcess of 180mph in either AZ or OK with a LEO in his car on a closed road with this back in the 60's

Engine selection is all about application. The 302 is the superior choice for wherever you may think you want a 289. The 4" bore gives the 302 a near perfect bore to stroke ratio from where you may tune a very broad Power band. Modern alloy heads keep weight down while offering better heat disapation and greater air flow.
If more torque is desired a 347 is just stroke away. The lower deck height means ,the 302 is more compact and may be an easier fit than most others engines.
Where there may be a 289 ,there should be a 302 ,unless you are building a period correct restomod or doing a proper restoration.
4.6 OHC engines are good but very expensive to modify for small power gains.
    Just an opinion.

That Daytona Cobra Coupe you keep showing was 289 powered. If you watch the Shelby life story documentary he talks about it. He got 200 mph out of that car with 350 horsepower. That's 289 territory. The 427s he built were conservatively rated at 425-450 horse. I have a '68 Cougar with a built 289. In that chassis, I wouldn't have anything else. It's a LOT punchier in the low to midrange torque than they get credit for, and it will not only rev fast, but rev higher than any small block I have ever owned. Seeing how squirrelly my Cougar can get with a small block, there is no way I would want a big block in it. The small block is fun, fast (faster than the car will let me go without turning into an airplane), and the car actually turns in. I am DEFINITELY a converted 289 guy after finally having one.

I'm gonna go with the 360-FE, it ran circles around the 390 and was damn near indestructible.....

Lol... you're kidding right? 360 never had more than 8.0 to 1 compression and never even had a 4v carb... its like a 400 only an fe. Just something to fill a hole in a truck.

I'm not trying to be mean at all... I'm sorry if I sounded that way but a 360 was never a performance engine.

I am trying to learn also, but you can add a 351q or 302, but many guys like that 289.. I would stay with the 289 and build on that... many guys can help you here

If you have ever heard the sound of a full race Shelby 289, it is the sound of music. Like the Italian car in the video but much louder.
At idle they sound like a nitro motor for real.
