These cars are absolute jewels. I know, I own one. Fit and finish are superb. And as stated, they give a raw, directly connected driving experience. Once you drive one, they will spoil you for driving anything else. Today's cars feel very muted and disconnected by comparison. But they are definitely not a beginner's car - when you punch the throttle, you had better know what you are doing!
My grandmother best friend had a “Original Shelby Cobra” in Wichita Falls, Tx and I remember that car didn’t come out of the garage till midnight in that small town. I remember him telling me that if I see one during the day it’s a replica. He died years ago and I’m sure his kids got the car but I was like 15 at the time and I knew it was a badass car.
Back in 1965, the year I graduated High School, I visited the Cobra dealer in San Antonio, Texas. It was on Broadway just south of Josephine St. I was inside "Drooling" on the Cobra's, when to my surprise the Salesman came out and asked me if I would like to go for a test ride! I couldn't get YES out of my mouth quicker! It was a 427 model, Silver with Clear Coat on it, Amazingly Beautiful. The salesman opened up the side door and backed the car into the garage then asked me to get in. I got in and strapped in. He went out the driveway and turned left, toward downtown and pulled out. We went down to a road that led to the access road of IH35 North. We then turned onto the entrance ramp for IH 35, that lead up to New Braunfels Ave., that went over IH 35. By the time we got to New Braunfels he was going over 100 Mph, and still climbing. I was having the time of my life! We went quite a way north on IH 35, then turned around around at an exit that ran over to 410 North then turned around and went back the way we came. It was simply amazing! The funny thing was, my dad was an old pre WW II pilot and actually knew Carol Shelby from his flying days. That was back when the Army Air Corps was todays Air Force. I later told him about my ride and he was actually jealous...so we both went back to the Cobra Dealership and he got a ride as well. I never could convince him to buy one, amazingly enough they were under $4,000 back then! Now that I'm much older I have a son that has a Viper, which was also one of Carol Shelby's projects working for Dodge, at that time. The history of Carol Shelby is Legend, and I doubt anyone is his peer. Back in 2006 I went to a celebration for Enlisted Pilots, Carol Shelby was there. I got his Signature in my Mustang book on the Boss 429 Mustang page. I will always treasure it, and pass it down to my heirs!
Greetings from South Africa and Congratulations - you have a fabulous car there! The Cobra really is something else though, truly legendary! I built a replica 1988 -1992 and ran it as my daily driver for 10 years, selling it on in 2002. I had about 70K trouble free miles of pleasure and thrills with it. Mine was also Guardsman Blue but no stripes and my exhaust pipes were slung underneath, like the road going British versions and I used a Ford Windsor 302 motor modified for extra power and torque. For road use it performed very well. One thing that finally got to me though is that anywhere you parked it someone would always be there asking all about the car and that gets a bit tedious when you are trying to get about your business and you do not want to be impolite!
I can only imagine everyone asking about your car.. I only have a 65 Mustang Conv. and you can't go to the gas station without someone asking a question.
Your unadulterated enthusiasm for the Cobra was wonderful. Thank you for sharing it so beautifully. A true enthusiast. Keep it up! My first time seeing your channel and I’ve subscribed.
Bob Bondurant won the 1965 FIA GT Championship in a Shelby Daytona Coupe with 289 Power,The ONLY American Driver and American Car to EVER win that title.I had the pleasure of going for hot laps at his driving school in Arizonia and at the Ford Test track in Dearborn ,Michigan He was a GREAT Driver and a Great Man.I'm blessed to have known him. Thanks for the video to say I'm jealous would be an understatement.
Back in around 1971 I took the Bondurant Diving School at Ontario Motor Speedway. It was with the Cobra Owners Club. He drove my car with me as a passenger. When he got done I got into my car and drove it a short way and when I stepped on the brakes the peddle went to the floor. He had boiled the brake fluid in my 1966 427 Cobra street version. I purchased the car in 1968 for $4,995 by convincing my dad to cosign on a loan by saying it would go up in value. I was thinking maybe $10,000. At the time I was using it as my every day car and put almost 50,000 miles on it in the first 4 years I owned the car. Since then I've only added around 25,000 miles on the car.
I have a certificate from the Bonduurant school of high performance driving, I’m very proud of it. As I tried to flat foot my formula ford I would sometimes wonder what it must have been like to pilot a 427 Cobra tuned by the finest minds of the time…. 😊
This is the right car in the right spec. Its beautiful. Also 7:35 "when they said that it made me love the car even more, it didn't terrify me or scare me from the car" Relatable. I believe those types of cars are the most fun to drive.
A very thoughtful, detail filled, tribute to the legendary Carroll Shelby and his incredible cars and influence influence on sports cars for humans. Well done.
when i was a kid i saw The Gumball Rally and instantly the cobra was my favourite. it˙s a brute in every way possible. i have come to terms with never actually being able to own one, but it˙s still on top of my list
Brother you still can if you work hard you can buy the kit for 20k and slowly buy all the parts for the build to come together engine transmission rear axle suspension etc ,don't let your dreams be dreams, chase them .
Great film. The Daytona V12 sounded pretty nice too. Two very epic cars. I was never a fan on a V8, but the Cobra often sounds great. There’s a 289 FIA ‘pure sound’ clip that really stirs pleasure.
Stunning car. I've had the pleasure of driving a similarly specced Cobra and it was ready to bite me the second I wasn't ready for it. Not for the inexperienced! You're a braver man than me to drive this sans the racing harness. A roll bar isn't going to help much when you're sailing 100 feet throught the air! Cheers from Aussie land - Dave
That car right there has been my dream car since the 60's since I was a kid . The color scheme and all . The nearest thing I ever had was a 62 Austin Sprite . Not stock though . It had a 66 327 corvette, top loader 4 spd., 9" ford narrowed rear end . But it felt like everything the Cobra had ... Almost . :) Beautiful car man . Have fun for the rest of your life in her . :)
Those side mirrors are terrific. I used to use a big convex mirror clipped on the center. But it looked terrible. Do not need it anymore since I switched out the side mirrors. Plus since I'm short and had bad knees I went with under car exhaust. No burning. Great job on the video.
I'll bet a Muscle Car's dream is to have someone say "This car is meant to be driven, but not just anyybody can drive it". Nice job. I can tell you appreciate that car for what it is.
I had a factory five 65 427sc. 392 windsor 5 speed. If I get another I want one looks just like that but with number 11. Yours is one bad ass machine! Love it.
Well done and well said brother. This car is STUNNING and it is a dream car of mine. I hope to own one one day. The labels on the dash are a great touch. Congrats on an amazing ride. The AC had way to much power, The Shelby Mustangs wer really heavy. like Goldilocks, the Pantera 351 and the factory suspension was a reall good blend
Wow , thanks for showing off Your 427 Cobra - that Unique Sound. Brought back many good memories for Me. You enjoy Your Cobra ....... Back in 1969 in San Diego my good friend Jim bought a used 1966 427 Cobra. How fast was it ? The guy he bought it from said it needed new plugs but Jim just had to take it to Carlsbad Raceway and run it against his Friend's Trailered 1968 Dodge Cornet 426 Hemi Drag Car with drag gears. The Cobra won by 3 car lengths !! I drove it one time and put a few thousand miles riding in it .........
The Cobra is "ONLY" a Widow Maker if you DISRESPECT its Power and Drive them Carelessly. The Power and TORQUE of this Engine is Insane . The Cobra is capable of Speeds and Handling that most folks today have NEVER Experienced ... trust me : )
I’m not a owner of anything close to this early type of vintage piece of machinery like this, but this is what I would consider to be a Purist’s automobile I’ve loved this car since of first day bought a model of it. It’s the most beautiful performance car on the planet, hands-down compared to anything and everything that’s been made in the past 60 years plus hands-down this is a sexiest piece of machinery on the road and the best sounding piece of machinery on the road, whether as a427 cobra motor or 302
Mine is almost exactly the same, and I'd say a "prefect spec" would be the addition of power steering. It's OK when you are moving but it's impossible at autocross. Power steering also enables you to run more caster, which will help rescue the car if you get squirrely. Most of the Cobra road racers use power steering.
You did a great job on this video. I agree, I could just stare at it all day its so beautiful! Wish I could drive one one day!!! Maybe own one. Congrats to you, Sir!
To be clear, the 427 Engine in this Cobra is very different than the original 427 Big Block used in the original. Not saying one engine is better than the other, its just that the car's handling is most likely greatly improved with the modern "stroked" 427 small block. Love the color, classic Blue is the only way to go (IMO).
I can't imagine what a 427 is like to drive being that mine is a 351 and plenty peppy. And yes, the pipes burn badly. I'm installing chrome heat shields. These are such a magnificent drive!
Nice videography and nice car control too with the donuts. The history of the Cobra is fascinating and definitely worth digging into. There was something special with what Shelby did because there were many other British specialist cars that utilized American V8s back in the day, but none had even close to the legendary following of the Cobra. Even though I would always like to see AC side of things mentioned in reference to the Cobra it does make sense to focus on the Shelby side as even with the Cobra 289 they had to redesign a lot of the structure and with the 427 most of the car was a new design.
This exact car in this exact color and white stripes has been my dream car since I was a little boy. I just hope I can get myself one of the kit versions of these someday.
Thanks for the video I truly love the sound of the engine, i’m a Ford fan, but I’ve also had some bad boy GM and Mopar a barracuda, So I don’t care what the name tag is oh I love juice yes it’s in my blood because my father race cars with ernie Irvin’s dad wayback in the day, and I raced motorcycles, when it’s in your blood it’s in your blood, and I don’t care if a sweet engine wakes me up in the middle of the night I still love it, Thank you again for sharing
What are those metal pins/plates protruding at the front and rear? Are they supposed to hold some sort of beam to act as a bumper needed for homologation purposes which is later removed cuz it spoils the looks otherwise?
At 13:32 in...I GREATLY appreciate you mentioning the side pipes, (or as I call 'em...Calf Cookers). Thankfully, I've never experienced that horrible pain nor do I want to in the future. I've always wondered WHY somebody hasn't come up with a rolled-up heat shield "towel" that you could roll out of the car and over the pipe(s) in order to avoid a life-long skin dis-figuration. Your thoughts???
Thank you 🙏 they actually make a set of heat shields for the side pipes but I just don’t like the way they look. It’s a compromise to keep it looking as original as possible but you always need to remind yourself and your passenger that they are there. 🙏
Heat shields are available in the aftermarket - most often mesh-style. They get hot but not nearly as hot as the sidepipes. They also sell "thermal sleeves" that slip over the sidepipes which can be slipped over when you are still sitting in the car.
I had them on my gt 350. They were made by hooker. I was stopped by the police for not having a heat shield. We contacted hooker and showed there was a space that would not get hot so you could not get burned. I do not know if these had the same
Its VERY Unwise to 'Operate" these BEASTS without Seat belts and Shoulder Harnesses !! one MUST have 100% RESPECT for the POWER a REAL 427 FE powered 2300 lb Cobra can and WILL Produce .... Been there , Done that ... I have owned 2 of them since 1968. I NEVER lost Respect , Most people have NO Idea the power and Torque these Cars produce. STAY safe My Friend ... These Beasts have NO Conscience !!
Beautiful car, it's just perfect! @carbonelement did you put #77 on the car, or was that the previous owner? Does number 77 have significance with Shelby Cobras? Or just a favourite number?
When you burn yourself on the exhaust, it's called a snake bite. Happenned to me when I was younger and I forgot about the side pipe when getting out of my uncle's Cobra
And no...Superformance are not the ONLY licensed builders of the Cobra my friend.. there's a company down in South Africa that build the full rolling chasis for all of the cars that Superformance build. It all started down here in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. They have the license to reproduce the Cobra, as well as the MkI Ford GT... and a handful of other models as well
I completely get it. I own a 2012 Grabber blue GT500, absolutely mint condition. It's not a cobra but I love my car and it shows. I wish I could find somebody that loved my car as much as I do that had a cobra and wanted to trade plus a little money of course on my part. Wishful thinking I know. Well I guess it is a cobra. Ya'll know
Best color, best wheel size, best stripes and numbers. Perfect cobra congratulations.
Thank you! 👍
Yes, it looks way better with original size wheels
I love watching the sidepipes rocking when you goose it. You can literally see torque.
Yup 👍🏻😂
There has never been a more beautiful car built since this. Its simply stunning.

It‘s a piece of art. The sound makes me goosebumps…

Amen to that ! Thank you for watching !
SIMPLY AWESOME, as you said the colour is spot on. Love that CAR. Thanks for showing your car, AMAZING
I love this car and your video. Thanks a lot for it!
My dream car. Congratulations
Thank you 🙏
What are those metal pins/plates protruding at the front and rear?
Are they supposed to hold some sort of beam to act as a bumper needed for homologation purposes which is later removed cuz it spoils the looks otherwise?
Stunning car🔥💙
What a fun car!
Sweet AC for sure!! Gotta love the 427!!
Yessir 💪🏻
Not an AC
Don't be a sissy. Those are burns of honor
@@arpadsayko6836 haha fair enough 😂
I had them on my gt 350. They were made by hooker. I was stopped by the police for not having a heat shield. We contacted hooker and showed there was a space that would not get hot so you could not get burned. I do not know if these had the same
Just wonderful. What a car ¨Dream Car¨. Have loads of fun and take care.
Thank you 🙏
Just my opinion. This is the most beautiful car ever made!
Wouldn't mind having one. Or possibly better yet, a Kirkham Cobra.
Glad you like it 🙏
That music at the start sounded like people playing sports on an indoor pitch
Congrats. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching !
This and the GT40 are still my dream cars. There are some unbelievably good replicas out there, so for me I wouldn't care.
Its VERY Unwise to 'Operate" these BEASTS without Seat belts and Shoulder Harnesses !!
one MUST have 100% RESPECT for the POWER a REAL 427 FE powered 2300 lb Cobra
can and WILL Produce .... Been there , Done that ... I have owned 2 of them since 1968.
I NEVER lost Respect , Most people have NO Idea the power and Torque these Cars produce. STAY safe My Friend ... These Beasts have NO Conscience !!
Thanks for the care I try to respect it as much as I can 🙏
Nicely done
The 427 Cubic Inch FE engine (the original big block in a Cobra) was more like 550 - 600 HP.
Beautiful car, it's just perfect! @carbonelement did you put #77 on the car, or was that the previous owner? Does number 77 have significance with Shelby Cobras? Or just a favourite number?
Superformance is 1 of 3 that can certify Shelby continuation cars. There's Shelby America and Classic Recreations also.
What's the rear end gear ratio ?
I checked it’s 3.73 to 1
That is absolutely a brautiful I love the video thanks for showing it
Thank you I appreciate it 🙏
When you burn yourself on the exhaust, it's called a snake bite. Happenned to me when I was younger and I forgot about the side pipe when getting out of my uncle's Cobra
Lovely car. What size wheels and tires are you running
Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much!🙏
Hi, what is the diameter of your white circles please?
Thanks.
An original 427 back in the day went for $6800 which was a shit ton of cabbage back then no bullshit no holds barred 100% pure adrenaline
That’s my dream car ever since my matchbox cars over 40yrs ago…
A great British car with an American engine ❤
And no...Superformance are not the ONLY licensed builders of the Cobra my friend.. there's a company down in South Africa that build the full rolling chasis for all of the cars that Superformance build. It all started down here in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. They have the license to reproduce the Cobra, as well as the MkI Ford GT... and a handful of other models as well
I love your cobra the colors and the stripes are so traditional and bad ass car
Thanks 🙏
Amazing vehicle!!! My favorite also
I would love nothing more than to show up for a driving licence test in this.
I can’t even imagine how glorious it was to drive a real one back in the 60s!
Neither can I :)
I "DO know" : )) I owned TWO of them 😁
Lucky man'😊@@Wilett614
Very special. Very nice.
Sensible ear-bud protector usage.
Absolutely gorgeous! My dream car since I can remember. Love it's is! 😍😍🏁👍
🙏🙏🙏🙏
the downshift make me cry
I’m in tears look at the shear beauty of this my favourite car ever I need to win the lottery.xx
You are me buddy with everything you said.
I appreciate it bud 🙏
Definitely a man’s car! Love It!
You got that right! Glad you like it 🙏
I completely get it. Ya'll know
I feel you dude ! Glad you like it
