Whenever I'm in HK, pineapple buns are my go-to breakfast food. You can get pineapple buns with various fillings, but the original/traditional "plain" one is my favourite.
I took a bakery class in Mongkok to learn the preparation of the iconic Hong Kong breads: pineapple buns, cocktail bun (Kai Mei pau), coconut bread roll, sausage bun (Cheung chai pau). I am getting pretty good, enough to satisfy my family’s requests. However can’t wait to return to Hong Kong to taste the real stuff! More power to Hong Kong!! 🫶 Thanks for sharing another great video, Sam.
That’s incredible that you know how to bake all these traditional buns/snacks, I bet your family really appreciate it! Let’s hope you can return to Hong Kong soon, and without quarantine!
Thanks Sam. I could almost feel my teeth dissolving watching this 😁. I always find your chats with the owners of the eateries very interesting. Donald's English is better than mine 🤣
This video was sweet, if you know what I mean. I was surprised on my visit to Hong Kong that these Pineapple buns have no trace of pineapple. Yuen Yeung was more even more surprising to know and never imagined that tea and coffee could go together. Thank you Sam for letting us know this as well as Kam Wah cafe and the interview with the owner's son. He spoke flawless English and that was easy to understand for us along with understanding the passion for his cafe.
Thanks so much as always Satish, your comments are always very insightful and positive! Glad that this video revealed some previously unknown things, and yes, Donald's English is perfect; he's a nice guy running a really cool neighbourhood institution!
@@HongKongHoods really surprised and impressed by Donald's English - very uncommon in the food industry in Hong Kong. He must have studied in the UK before - have you asked him?
Hey Sam! Really like to watch your cha chaan teng vids, soooo satisfying! Want you to go to 基隆茶餐廳 next. They need a shout out they're very well known for their charity in the past.
Hi Sam, great show as usual. We love pineapple buns. Another place for us to try when we're in Hong Kong next. I'm not sure we will have enough breakfasts to do them all. Thanks again and keep up the good work, Marcus and Siobhan.
Thank you Marcus and Siobhan, glad you enjoyed this one; we certainly enjoyed making it! Haha yeah, I think it would be difficult to do all these places in just one visit. Maybe over a few times is more realistic. Thanks as always for the support! :)
Thanks Sam. Your videos are absolutely awesome and most importantly, the genuine feeling and facial expression I can see from how you appreciate the food, as well as the history behind it. You know much more than a local like me. I love the way you interview the owners in some of the video and this is great. Pls keep working and I believe food like bbq pork + chicken rice (sometimes ppl called it “siu mei”), and some more old school type of cha chaan ting will definitely be great. Those old school shops should have lots of stories behind. Big support to you!
Ah one more…try the local burger shop. One called Sze Sun Hamburger in Hung Hom. There’re few shops like this making localised burger. See how a westerner think about it..

I actually love the Mexico bun more than the pineapple bun since it’s a little less sweet. Unfortunately, all the bakeries I visited here in the states does not make a pure Mexico bun that is unfilled or authentic tasting. I also love the egg puffs (don kow) deep fried egg puffs dipped in sugar and the bui Tzai go (rice cakes on a stick, plain or red beans). These two items have been gone from U. S. Asian bakeries for decades. Miss them so much. Thanks, Sam, for another great Chinese cafe food video.

Is it safe to go to Chinatown? I heard there are a lot of break ins for rental cars. We would love to visit to SF if not for the security concerns. One of my friends went to visit there a year ago, and she said it was awful and SF was one of her favorite cities before.
Love your way of presenting mate 👍 keep up the good work. Your history lessons are very interesting, it shows you have done your research! Your attempt to order in cantonese is respectful 🙏

That French Toast is the sweetest of them all he had in Kam Wah Cafe mostly with those maple syrup. Sam pretty much did Pineapple Buns and Egg Tarts so there aren't much differences with other cafe he had been. The definition of Yin Yeung is actually called Yin Yang-Shape of two commas with a dot inside to form a circle balance of good and evil. Thank you as always for your nice comment, and for sharing the in-depth information about the foods! Your favourite food with the two burger buns sounds absolutely delicious, and I’ll try to find it- so you have any suggestions on which places do it well?
@@HongKongHoods The cafe I went to when I was a child located in Nam Cheong Street of Sham Shui Po, but it's already been closed down long ago. I remember the Satay Beef inside the burger buns is delicious. I would think all other cafe would serve it too??
The "yuen yeung" or "yin yeung" is written as 鴛鴦 as per mandarin duck; what you said about the "two commas" motif is "yin yang", written as 陰陽 , the concept of opposing attributes. But as a motif, it is more correct to be called "taichi" 太極 , the ultimates of extremes, or even more correctly, 兩儀 or "the two sides"; it is easy to be confused if you do not use the Chinese characters. Also, the syrup poured over the french toast was never maple syrup, but golden syrup, the iconic one used is made in England by Lyle's, but lately, other brands could have been substituted.

Super stuff, as usual. Lived in Mongkok for several months when we came to Hong Kong - absolutely agree with the owner of this cafe …it’s authentic HK. A suggestion for your next video (not sure if you have already covered them) Mido Cafe in Yau Ma Tei…from what I understand also a local institution…
Thanks for watching Arjun and for your nice comment- we agree too, the neighbourhood really is so authentic! Regarding Mido Cafe, that’s a great idea, thanks for the suggestion!
Thank you for the video. Let me have my breakfast there tomor(Sunday). 金華's pineaple bun is one of the best in HK, if not the best. Milk tea also great.
Forgive me for saying that, it is golden syrup they used , not maple syrup. I find your video is good quality and well research and entertaining. Thank you!

Bit of an aside, but Vice/Munchies just uploaded a video on the Tomato Macaroni dai pai tung you guys visited in an earlier video. Cool to see your channel spotlighting these local spots before the big players.
nice video well done. I never saw people picking up the sai dor see by hand. we usually cut them into smaller pieces, dressing off with maple syrup then eat with fork (so to skip the mess haaaa). your video today suddenly reminds me of a pork chop theme cha tsaan teng at pond lane of Sheung wan. they are also well known for their milk tea too I think its call four kee
Thank you as usual for watching and such kind words of support! I think I picked up the French toast in the western gweilo way 😆 but next time I will use a knife and fork to avoid the mess. Do you happen to know the name of the place in Sheung Wan you are talking about?
@@HongKongHoods it is called 科記咖啡餐廳 For Kee Restaurant enter from 210(?) Hollywood road towards pond lane i guess, they have an interesting history and house ginger chubby cat but i aint allowed to post any external link here should be searchable easily online
Excellent video Sam, attracted and tempted by you, I am sure MANY people now have to enrol in the gym for exercise lessons 😅😓😊😊😊😁. All your recommendations are so true and on the ground 😃 EXCELLENT THANKS
Lovely seeing food from my country of birth. Just a side note. The french toast is served with table syrup not maple syrup. Once you've tasted real maple syrup, it is very easy to distinguish between the two. Maple syrup is too expensive an ingredient for chai chun tang which is similar to a greasy spoon diner in North America. And being Canadian, I grew up eating real maple syrup and I can spot it a mile away. Thanks anyways for showcasing the amazing traditional HK food which IMO is pretty cool and unique in how it integrated the influence of British flavours into the Cantonese flavours.
Thank you Sue! Yes, you're completely right, this is golden/table syrup, not maple syrup...I think I got too excited and uttered "maple" by mistake there. Thanks for watching our videos, and glad you're enjoying them. More on the way!
Thanks Elaine and Steve! That’s a great question. For me it is certainly the contrast that exists here: between the sparkling new skyscrapers and malls, and the very old, traditional facets of culture that still exist if you scratch just beneath the surface. Whether that be food or traditional artisans doing their craft, I love to discover it, and document it so that there’s a record for years to come!
A very nice video showcasing Hong Kong's iconic pineapple bun. And, while I've had many pineapple buns, I've never actually tried the baw law yaou. The bakeries where I am invariably sell their goods pre-wrapped in a translucent plastic sleeve. So, one merely grabs a bun off the shelf and pays at the counter. The buns will not be warm; and, of course, there won't be a cold slab of butter in the center. To get one it seems, one has to actually dine-in at a cha chaan teng. And, so, lacking cha chaan tengs, baw law yaous aren't a thing where I am unfortunately. Interesting how that works.
Thanks as always Vablonsky, and that’s a shame about your bun situation. Yes, I think that to get a genuine Hong Kong bun of any kind your best bet is a Cha Chaan teng, and ideally in HK itself. Let’s hope restrictions ease to make travel here more feasible! Thanks as always for watching!
usually when we eat the french toast, we cut them into small bites loll - usually a few cuts horizontally and vertically into square bites, i see yours here is already cut into half triangle when served, but still we would cut them into small bites to eat, that's why they always come with a knife and a fork, so your hands would not be a mess, and the maple serum would not drip off over the place :) very nice videos, keep it up!
Thanks Fiona! Yes, a few people have commented on this...I don't know, I just love the decadence of eating French toast this way, although it is indeed a bit messy! Thanks as always for your comment, and glad you're enjoying our videos!
7:13 yin-yong drink name is derived from the word yin and yang (term often used in feng shui teaching) , simply mean a mixture of 2 items In Malaysia, the local cafe (Kopitiam) called it "Cham" (mix of coffee & tea) The drink name has nothing to do with mandarin duck, as you said 😅
Thanks Lena, yes- a couple of people have mentioned that! I can see the benefits, but there’s something about holding it in your hands and taking a huge bite that is very enjoyable 🙏😆
another awesome video - i like seeing the indulgence of HK finest culinary delights - funny thing tho when i saw the maple syrup raining down i was wondering what work out routine you have between videos :) some serious calories !
Yeah, that was probably the most decadent thing I've eat in a while. Fending off the fat involves a lot of running and trying to eat healthy as much as possible when I'm not filming!
That’s the best bakery chan tang I ever had pineapple bun. There is usually a very long line people buying their buns and their food inside is also very good
Thank you for watching! Sai Kung is on our radar for future videos, but nothing concrete just yet. Do you have any specific places you'd like us to visit?
Another great video. Thanks, Sam. I grew up eating pineapple buns, but I prefer the cocktail bun which has a coconut custard filling. Traditionally, pineapple buns have no filling, but nowadays there are some bakeries, cafes and dimsum places that make pineapple buns with different fillings including custard, ube, pineapple, etc. On a different note, could you try Islam Food Restaurant in Kowloon City? They've been around since 1950. Their signature dish is the pan fried beef bun, a must try. Other recommendations: curry mutton over rice and lamb soup noodle. Cheers 👍🙏
Hi Minnie, thanks as always for watching! I agree that cocktail buns are delicious, I recently tried some very nice ones at an old bakery in Wan Chai. Regarding Islam Food, we actually featured it in our Kowloon City Top 5 video. Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/8abORIePuTw/видео.html
@@HongKongHoods Glad you tried the pan fried beef buns at Islam Food. Thank you for reminding me. Kowloon City is also known for its Chiuchow cuisine, as I'm sure you know. Have you tried a bowl of fish skin dumpling noodle soup? If not, search it out. Not many places offer it anymore, inside and outside of HK. It's a rare specialty and very delicious.
HK is definitely in the Top 10 most beautiful city in Asia. Mongkok is so beautiful and Prince Edward. But I love Hong Kong Island and Stanley the most.
Hi sam! Another good one out! Can i ask how long does it usually take for your “tasting scene”?😂. Also, have you ever been told we NEVER use our hands for the french toast?😂. We cut them into 9 pieces in squares. As you mentioned in it, it is soaked with syrup. That’s why we don’t do it with hands haha🤣🤣🤣🙈. Can’t wait for the next one already btw
Thanks for watching and for the advice. In a word, no, I wasn’t aware that is was customary to eat French toast with utensils rather than hands, but it certainly does make sense given how messy it can be. Regarding shoots, we usually spend an hour or two at a place to capture all the shots we need. Thanks again, and more coming soon!

Mido is good for tourists to take pictures only, not a place for foodie …
Sam, Sat in Aust., hungry ! Surely looking foward for your next video !
Thanks Carol! More videos on the way!
Thank you for the video. Let me have my breakfast there tomor(Sunday). 金華's pineaple bun is one of the best in HK, if not the best. Milk tea also great.
Did you eat there on Sunday? Hope you enjoyed it! 😋
yes, I did. Sunday afternoon. thank you again
OMG Sam I love your videos ....Yummmm
Thank you so much Pat!
Another great video, I miss the yinyeung and mongkok in general. Glad to see HK is up n running again🤓🤤
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed!
My last trip to HK a few years back and my friend told me I have to try their bolo buns and I did. Damn they were really good!
Your friend gave an excellent recommendation. We don't know anywhere that does them better in Hong Kong!
wow, i am impressed for Donald chan's english
Thanks for watching. Donald was educated and lived in England for a long time
Yeah, Donald’s English is superb!
French toast and egg tart... I love them and I miss them.
Two Hong Kong traditional staples! 👍
Forgive me for saying that, it is golden syrup they used , not maple syrup. I find your video is good quality and well research and entertaining.
Thank you!
Thanks for watching and that is correct! I mistakenly said "maple" in the midst of all the excitement.
I am missing all of these food. And I can’t wait to come back to have them all in 2 months time
I'm sure you'll have a great time- we'd love to know what you think of the places we've covered and what your favourite dishes are! Thanks for watching!
@@HongKongHoods they are all wonderful, I have been to a couple of these places. I just miss these food so much. I haven’t been back to Hong Kong since 2016. I bet a lot has changed.
@@leo124323 I think a lot has changed here too, but there is still a lot of the food culture, you just have to know where to look these days- the places that are left are becoming incredibly special!
Thanks Sam! Great one, even though born and bred in HK, never been to Kam Wah! Will check it out soon.
Certainly recommend it highly, Shalom!
As a Hongkonger living overseas, watching your videos is the best cure of homesickness. Hey man keep up the good work. Support and appreciated!
Glad you’re enjoying the videos and very happy they can cure your homesickness. Thanks for the support and more videos on the way!
Bit of an aside, but Vice/Munchies just uploaded a video on the Tomato Macaroni dai pai tung you guys visited in an earlier video. Cool to see your channel spotlighting these local spots before the big players.
Oh thanks for bringing that to our attention, will check that video out!
Another yummy video, Sam! Love the vibe there...I'll be sure to visit next time I'm back in HK! Keep those recommendations coming! 👍
Thanks for watching Allan and glad you enjoyed it! Yes, certainly recommend this spot; very delicious and atmospheric!
Thank you Sam, I love how you insist to order food in Cantonese every time, sound lovely and correctly, respect🫡
Thank you Anson! I try 😆, and that’s very kind of you to say it sounds well pronounced! Glad you enjoyed the vid 🙏👍
nice video well done.
All your recommendations are so true and on the ground 😃 EXCELLENT
THANKS
Thanks as always Johnson. Yes, I should charge the gym companies sponsorship money! 😆 glad you enjoyed this one Johnson, and more on the way! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
More on the way!
yummy breads
watching now from Lam tin HK
Thanks for watching, the bread was yummy indeed!
I miss home. I miss the taste of Cantonese food. :/ Watching this at 3 am is no use.
Glad this video inspired your appetite, and hopefully you can get back to HK soon!
That french toast looks good… do they have savoury dishes?
Yes, they have lots!
Thanks Sam! Great video as always you are indeed a legend. You must be an expert on egg tarts by now! Keep up the good work😋
Haha getting there Davy! Thanks as always.
I lived in Prince Edward in my early childhood years. I actually have some vague memory of this cafe. I miss a good pineapple bun and egg tart.
Thanks for watching and glad this vid brought back memories!
Another great video Sam!
Question for you - what fascinates you the most about the HK culture :)?
Thanks Elaine and Steve! That’s a great question. For me it is certainly the contrast that exists here: between the sparkling new skyscrapers and malls, and the very old, traditional facets of culture that still exist if you scratch just beneath the surface. Whether that be food or traditional artisans doing their craft, I love to discover it, and document it so that there’s a record for years to come!
@@HongKongHoods this is awesome sam, I'm a content creator myself, so I appreciate what your doing here!
Mmmm… pineapple buns! How I miss Hong Kong!
Hopefully you can return here soon!
usually when we eat the french toast, we cut them into small bites loll - usually a few cuts horizontally and vertically into square bites, i see yours here is already cut into half triangle when served, but still we would cut them into small bites to eat, that's why they always come with a knife and a fork, so your hands would not be a mess, and the maple serum would not drip off over the place :) very nice videos, keep it up!
Thanks Fiona! Yes, a few people have commented on this...I don't know, I just love the decadence of eating French toast this way, although it is indeed a bit messy! Thanks as always for your comment, and glad you're enjoying our videos!
7:13 yin-yong drink name is derived from the word yin and yang (term often used in feng shui teaching) , simply mean a mixture of 2 items
In Malaysia, the local cafe (Kopitiam) called it "Cham" (mix of coffee & tea)
The drink name has nothing to do with mandarin duck, as you said 😅
Thanks Sam for an informative video! Just letting you know local people use fork & knife for French toast so your hands don’t get sticky 😀
Thanks Lena, yes- a couple of people have mentioned that! I can see the benefits, but there’s something about holding it in your hands and taking a huge bite that is very enjoyable 🙏😆
Been there last Nov 5 ..I really like the Pineapple bun
❤
Nice! We love it there! Thanks for watching
another awesome video - i like seeing the indulgence of HK finest culinary delights - funny thing tho when i saw the maple syrup raining down i was wondering what work out routine you have between videos :) some serious calories !
Yeah, that was probably the most decadent thing I've eat in a while. Fending off the fat involves a lot of running and trying to eat healthy as much as possible when I'm not filming!
That’s the best bakery chan tang I ever had pineapple bun. There is usually a very long line people buying their buns and their food inside is also very good
Thanks for commenting, and agreed it’s a great bakery! Pineapple buns are the best!
Please also try the mexico bun and chicken pie. BTW your Cantonese is good.
Thanks Emily! Will bear that in mind next time I go there! 💪🙏
Oh the sugar and the caffeine! ! I'd be bouncing off the wall after a meal like this! (great video as usual!)
I certainly had a bit of a high after the meal Sandra 😉 thanks for watching
Hi Sam. Great video as always. Any plans to visit and vlog in Sai Kung?
Thank you for watching! Sai Kung is on our radar for future videos, but nothing concrete just yet. Do you have any specific places you'd like us to visit?
I live in the UK and I haven’t visited HK for a long time now so can’t think of anything in particular apart from seafood lol
We like to cut up the French toast into nine pieces or so and then share them with others. 👍🏻😊
Yun Yeung also means hybrid in a sense.
Thanks Elaine, I will cut up and share next time, as a whole portion is a little much for me 😆. Yes, I guess the hybrid meaning is quite fitting!
@@HongKongHoods I wish I could be a tester with you. 😊👍🏻
Thanks for sharing Eduardo! Couldn’t agree more that HK is beautiful!
The interior of the café actually is soooo iconic! 😁
Agreed; very atmospheric!
Our pineapple buns are a favorite in our restaurant. Love our Chinese sweets!!! 🥰
Pineapple buns are one of our favourite snacks!
Agreed!!! Uncle Yip's is the best!
Was gonna point that out too. Toast can generally be eaten with hands, but certainly not French toast because it gets messy quickly.
For pineapple bun, suggest try Sai Kung Cafe n bakery, definitely the best best one in Hong Kong 😋😋😋
That's not the first time we've heard this suggestion. Thanks for the tip...and noted!
good video mate
Thank you🙏
Using your hand to eat the French toast is so interesting.
Local people would use knife & fork to slice them into pieces to eat.
That’s true Kevin… I guess I prefer eating it with hands, although it’s slightly messy! Thanks as always for watching 🙏
How do you exercise to keep fit after eating the mouth-watering buns?
I run a few times a week! It fortunately helped stave off the pounds! Thanks for watching!
OMG.. makes me drooling.. im a HKer in Calgary now, despite i love Pineapple bun in HK, do try those sold in Calgary, i think they are as good as the made in HK one and on comparable price too. Enjoyed your videos, makes me miss some home food :)
That's great that they do good pineapple buns in Calgary! How's the other Cantonese food? Thanks for watching our videos and glad you're enjoying them!
Sam, I have never seen anyone holding the French Toast by hand! LOL
Would you consider trying Man Sing Cafe in Tai Hang (near Tin Hau MTR)? They are famous for the “steamed mince pork mountain”. The one and only in town.
Thank you for watching Stephanie! Haha I’ve had a quite a few comments about that… sorry, it’s just the way I like to eat it; very decadent! Thank you for the tip about Man Sing in Tai Hang. We’ll look into it.
Really like to know where to get those Black & White cups and mugs to - reckon there as much a unique HK specialty as the pineapple bun
Not exactly sure where they sell them, but I will let you know if I find out!
For iced drinks like milk tea/coffee/milk tea & coffee/lemon tea/lemon water in tea restaurant in HK, in fact many ppl will order "less sugar"少甜 or "no suger"走甜 to reduce the sweetness / make it a bit healthier 😂
That’s an excellent point Robbie, thank you!
Yes please! 😋😊. I miss HK!
Thanks for watching!
if you like stronger milk tea, can try "caring tea" in Central Market or kuwn tong. they make pretty good tea and yin yeung. only take-away though.
go in the afternoon after 2 when the tea is ready. Thanks for the vid and hope you'll get more subs and views !
Thank you for the suggestion, we've made a note of it! Also thanks for watching. More videos coming soon!
you should try pineapple bun with cheese inside, there is a restaurant in cheung sha wan make it
Sounds delicious! Do you know the name of the restaurant?
@@HongKongHoods it is Milk Cafe 牛奶冰室 in Cheung Sha Wan
@@Winter_Treedontdont Thanks for the tip!
Can you do a story on Jumbo Restaurant? 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great idea, but difficult to get footage now 😞
No surprise, you picked the cream of the crop afternoon delights. I can eat the same items every day until my cholesterol burst into flames. Thanks for sharing, Sam
Thanks for watching Jery! Agreed, very delicious, but not at all the healthiest! I try to jog as much as possible to reverse the calories!
