We SNAPPED a bolt! Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera DIY Clutch Replacement Part 2
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 июл 2024
- We continue working on our Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera DIY Clutch replacement, but run into a snag. It turns out that the Lamborghini Gallardo service manual has the WRONG torque specifications for the bolts that hold the clutch to the flywheel! It says 70nm but that is WAY too high for these small bolts. Well, I should have listened to my instincts and done less torque, but I ended up following the book and snapping one of the bolts! Thankfully we were able to get the rest of the bolt out of the flywheel and save the clutch!

I give you guys credit for having the balls to tackle these projects
Thanks!
@@normalguysupercar I agree takes confidence or craziness to take that project on. It's obvious you are not trades mechanics, nobody would put 70ft/lb into a bolt that size. No bolt that size would ever take that much torque.
My OCD kicks in whenever I see so much dirt and grime in an engine bay.
Com' on man, clean that thing! You're killing me! lol
Dude we're still taking it apart! Calm down son. Lol
There’s something satisfying about watching you DIY a probably 15k clutch job yourself with Harbor Freight stuff laying around 🤣🤣 you sir are my hero
Lol thank you
Adam brings a lot to the channel
I like his wit and sense of humour 👍
Thanks
Fantastic !!! Other than additional lighting this is coming out sweet !!! Didn't realize there are so many hoses and connections to the transmission.....well done gents !!!
Thanks
Awesome work Dan!
Thanks
Definitely need better lighting so we can see better. Overall, great video series so far! Ready for the next one!
Thanks
Yup, super interesting content but throw the light switch. There’s no way we could spot something in Dans teeth….
I was thinking that's a very dark shop
@@normalguysupercar simplest fix is just hire a painter. Walls are nearly black and looks like the ceiling is the same.
I love that you post these things for people. So many exotic channels are "I sent my car off to be worked on and look at it." but it's great to show people that it's totally possible to DIY on exotics and the intricacies involved. Always good stuff man.
You bet
Helps to have a professional shop with lift and lots of thousands of dollars in tools. Try doing this in Dan’s garage and it’s a completely different story. But great content and definitely no fear.
The timelapse at the end is really a nice touch ! One suggestion: do upload the same timelapse separately, without any intro you guys saying anything (maybe 1 second or 2 of LOGO), pure timelapse. It will do wonder for your subscriptions ("timelapse or rebuilding clutch Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera").
Thanks
Nice work guys!
Thanks
Im really glad you went with the Super Leggera its been a great watch so far .
It's a hell of a car
Awesome video! You guys do amazing work and have fun doing it (I hope!). Broken bolts happen, but you kept going!
Thanks
You guys are a ton of fun to watch and I always look forward to your videos. I live in Spring Branch on Canyon Lake, so if you're ever taking a cruise around here, it would be great to meet you guys!
Balls of inconel for taking this project on. Seems like it was a beast and still have ways to go. I remember doing that stuff when younger but in much simpler cars and it was still a b... Congratulations to you guys.
Thank you. Lol balls of Inconel!
Another awesome video Dan, I also remember when I snapped a bolt on my C5 Corvette lower shock Bolt turns out it was the wrong torque spec! Per the manual
Ugh
Thanks for the video. You’ve confirmed why it’s so expensive to change and why I don’t think I would ever attempt it!
Yeah you can see why they charge $10k for this
Super interesting to see how 'basic' the car is in the rear once you start taking stuff apart. Looks like someone went to Home Depot and welded together a frame. lol. Pretty wild the difference the bodywork makes. Now the fun part will be remembering how everything goes back together and not missing a hose, wire, or bolt!
Lol yes hopefully no spare bolts
I love the use of the tire bar to get the actuator off
Use what you got
@@normalguysupercar absolutely. Not hating just love the mindset as I do this all the time.
They probably meant “quanto basta” for the torque setting
Ha
LOL now you understand how to fix an Italian tractor…just enough love…
Always wanted to do this but... FIRST!!
Fir.... ahh dang..
Yay!
@@auwz66 😆😆
Awesome man. Wrenching on a Lambo. I wouldn't even get near the thing. Go at it! Love these videos.
Thanks
Upon completion, you will elevate your expectation....Good job Dan and the gang....
Thanks!
J’adore le time lapse final 😃👍
Thanks!
Pro tip #1: Never use a flat headed screwdriver to separate a component at it's sealing surface. Doing so risks damaging the surface.
Pro tip #2: Always give stated torque specs the sanity check. Compare what's documented with the a fastener torque table to insure you are tightning to the proper value. There's nothing I hate more than stripping a hole in a component that's going to result in the teardown of an engine or trying to dig a bolt out of a hole where it's broken off flush.
Yup
@@normalguysupercar I disagree, ALWAYS use a flat headed screwdriver, they are like mini crow bars :)
Love the channel! Would be neat if you interested a quick time lapse of the work throughout.
Regardless always a fun watch!
There was a time lapse at the end.
@@normalguysupercar note taken lol. Watch the whole damn thing before commenting.
You seem to have gotten so much more confident taking apart these cars.
Eh I still generally don't know what I'm doing
@@normalguysupercar I saw my father work on cars, he had the shop manuals, but then I guess, things go wrong from there.
Enjoyed the video, Dan. That was unique and fun. Lucky on the bolt. btw, my wife says Meg is too hot for you.
Lol she is
Fluid that smells like Adam's hiney! 🤣😂
Lol
Very interesting
Thanks
Great video, light years from when you had 150 subs. After the trans is done, need a whining w Dan segment and bring the Texas lawyer back too.
Lol I should
Awesome work! Did u ever do the F430 clutch???
Nope
where did you find a rear bumper frame where most of the tabs brake or fall apart from the heat.
I need to buy one for my car.
Thank You
Online? Lol I don't know I have to ask Richard
Great video . Can you get the “ lighting assistant “ to put a little more light on the subject ? 😎😂
Working on it!
Did you do the clutch bolts up to 1 Ugga Dugga or 2?
I’ve been caught out myself with workshop manual clutch torques on Mercs. Perhaps the writers throw one or two of these way-off torques in there just fun. I can see them sniggering “this’ll get ‘em!”
Take care and keep smiling!
Haha! 70? Oops we meant 7.
Great video guys! If I am remembering correctly, Tavarish had a bolt snapping issue on his Gallardo but on the clutch bell housing. He snapped several and I don't remember him ever giving a specific reason.... wondering if the service manual is incorrect there as well.
It's entirely possible...
Its well know that Lamborghini service manuals are..well not very good lol
Or he snapped it for content which is a good idea 😂
@@organiccold Italian farmers typically know how to work on tractors without much instruction. Lol
Damn dude, you wasted no time ripping into the SL! Very impressive! Where is the shop located? Looking forward to watching your business and channel grow in the future. I know we will be doing business in the future. Congratulations guys!
Thank you
there's not a lambo master tech on site, how is this even possible? absolutely amazing work...@@" how did u research all the steps and spec?
I talked to Josh
Another amazing video, even though Adam was giving too much info hahaha
Lol
Have you guys got the LARAS software to setup the clutch PIS after the install?
No, Josh has a Texa.
Did the exhaust clamp bolts give you any problems? I have seen those fasteners fail on other videos.
Yes.
It’s so funny on my motorcycle whenever I paid for an oil change after they did the oil change how would say did you drain the second drain plug? Did you torque the first drain plug to this setting did you torque the second drank and plug to this to its setting which was different and never once did a licensed mechanic drain the second oil drain plug or torque both of them to the right setting. Trained Yamaha professionals at dealerships.
That's sad.
Did you use any grease on the input shat before installing the Throwout bearing ?
Yes
Keep up the great content guys. My clutch is at 40% so I will be attempting the same thing. How do I get all the book info? will you be selling a copy on site so we can do our clutch removals?
No I can't legally sell that book
I understand. When I get close to my replacement I will call you and pay for your time. Thanks Dan always a pleasure.
What brand of ( black ) gloves do wear ? Lotta disassembling to do that job , good job 👍🏻
Whatever we can get for cheap. LOL!
I want to say there are torque specs for bolts by size of the bolt, incase thats helpful in the future.
Yeah I'm aware. Should have double checked
So after the install, are you supposed to reset the clutch engagement like you do on the Ferrari F1 system? Do you have the computer for that or will you be taking the car to a Lamborghini dealer for that?
Yes and Josh will do it
Song name during time lapse portion?
I can just see you guys dialing up Josh, yelling, "JOSH, we broke the Lamborghini! How do we fix it?!" 🤣
Lol
Someone needs to write 'Zen And The Art Of Lambo Maintenance'. I checked a similar bolt in the garage and I reckon they may have meant 17Nm. Feel the force Dan and go with your instincts!
I should have
Great content Dan,
But the lighting in the bay could be a bit better.
Working on it.
Does that shop have lights? So dark looking in the videos
Yeah
So I Been Told Your Grandfather Was A Movie Star Wow
Uh no?
I bet there was a lot of cussing when that snapped. lol. That's about the time I go get a beer and watch some tv for a little while.
LOL yes I definitely cursed up a storm.
6 out of 5 times, the new guy breaks the clutch cover bolt every time 🤣
Especially when following three manual
So what is the torque required on the M10 bolt if not 70 N.m ???
Gutten-tite
@@normalguysupercar If M6 then is 20 Nm. The book is misprint.
Luckiest snapped bolt I’ve ever seen. Usually, that would lead to a lot of curse words, sweat, and possibly tears
There was definitely curse words.... Almost tears until it spun easily.
Luckily it wasn’t the flywheel bolt in the crankshaft, that would be 😱🤯🤬
NGS demonstrating how you absolutely do not want to DIY this job 😁
Haha
Since you had the tyranny out, did you change out the rear main seal?
No, was advised not to by Josh.
@@normalguysupercar gotcha. Was thinking that it would be one of those "while you're in there" situations. I guess that with 30k on the clock. You should be OK. Best of luck with the build. I'm enjoying this series.
oh,
I thought this was all for show,
After you guys do this plebian act repairing the Lambo, you put on your expensive suits-hop into your RR and hang out in the swankiest establishments (:
Cheers!
Lol I have no swanky suit
and a Josh reference !!!!!
Indeed.
That's a bummer on that bolt snapping. Looks like an M6-ish bolt? If so that would be in the range something like 11-20Nm, nothing more!
If a torque spec in a manual doesn't look right, it's worth doing a quick sense check against a table of standard torque specs for that size and grade of bolt. The manufacturer spec might be different from standard for a good reason, but it won't be *massively* out of the 'standard' range of torque spec. (And also if no torque spec is given in manufacturer manual, go with the 'standard' spec from the table :) ).
Great recovery from that situation though, well done!
Yeah, I should have trusted my instinct.
Sweet mother of God, you guys are good!
Lol I don't know about that but thanks
You were being very modest, that’s some major work on a car that you haven’t had much experience with!👍👍👍👍👍 five thumbs up!
Dan, you need more light 💡
We're working on that
How in the hell do you remember to put all those bolts and parts back together correctly? Seriously, if I were to take apart my car like that, I’m sure I’d be left with extra parts I don’t know where the heck they go! Impressive job!
You have to organize them and label them is a good strategy.
Lol record everything! Yes I like the label system. My dad always had extra bolts left over. 🤔
Do you happen to know a Lambo tech you could ask about this? I’d be curious if that’s like a totally known thing very strange the spec being wrong in the book for a obviously common service bolt to
Yes Josh confirmed it's wrong
@@normalguysupercar cray!
You should always replace the pilot bearing no matter if it looks good or not as you will have to redo the entire job if it goes bad before the new clutch end... :-( and the reason as to why you snap that bolt is because you have to put pressure on the finger to release the pressure... usually you need a specialist tool to do it or you can make your own... and it is 70nm
No it's not 70nm. Confirmed with Lamborghini tech
These pretzels are making me thirsty. LOL If anyone remembers that line.
I do!
Yeah Dan give it a good pull come on
Lol I did
love videos, reach out if you ever in nj
Yea pull it all apart again and Put a Rear Main Seal and pilot Bearing
Naa
No way 70nm, check out the Audi R8 V10 manual for service, Rj in Oz
Yeah, I should have listened to my gut.
Videos are too dark. Can you add more background lights? Keep up the good work.
Trying to
Just wondering..say you never really worked on a car before...going to guess buying a Miata...taking it apart and putting it back together would be worth it before you so much as washed your Supercar? That would make a cool channel.
Certainly you'd learn stuff.
You should consider different cats or deleting them due to the inherent design of the factory cats causing cylinder scarring.
We bought cat deletes
Does the manual call for new crankshaft bolts? No new pilot bearing???? Deploy the popcorn
Nope
When will you build a muscle car or a jdm car you can build them up to super car powers and even more?
No
Hi. Were this bolts new????? So far what i know those are - I am deeply sorry, I dont know the english name, in german they are called "Dehnungsschrauben"
The other bolts are called in german "Vielzahn" those are the really very best screws. In the Helicopter engines they are used due to the fact that they are special and prices with respect to torque . That is why they are used.
Torque to yield - one time use only...
They are new
Yeah..I cringed when you went to torque those small bolts that high...lol. My Quartermaster race clutch has a torque spec of like 20 foot lbs for those...hehe
Yeah that seems more accurate
Yep. I can see dealer cost of $10000
Oh yeah.
Where is Josh?😁
Not there
This car is going to leak like the Exxon Valdez when it’s reassembled.
Sure
Can you ladies please take a moment and clean the engine bay before buttoning it up? 🏁😎
Ha
I don’t know how anyone watching this can ever complain about the cost to replace one of these clutches… take my money 💰
Lol
Every shop should link this video when someone complains about the price. lol
This channel inspires us to do it ourselves. The hardest part is keeping track of everything to put it back in the right order. 😇 Trans/Diff oil smells bad. Also could be old hydraulic fluid.
How did this become a partnership? Sorry. Didn't check in for a while and somehow missed that even though I've seen most of your content. Been subscribed since the beginning of your channel but missed that. Anyone wanna fill me in :)
Partnership?
@@nzguy9336 yep that's what I'm missing
sure is a LOT easier to work on a Ferrarri
Eh I don't know, both are pretty simple in many ways
50 ft lbs for pressure plate is not unreasonable. I saw a guy undet torque them and whole thing had to come apart. Buy new bolts! And a pilot bearing
The bolts are new only the one broke
Is that Ron Jeremy's son??
LOL
@@normalguysupercar I just had to, the opportunity was too great.
Change the bearing ! It cost no money to replace.
May do that.
This comes under the title of Audi designed the car for Lamborghini and to keep the Italians happy they let them do one little thing. Cee it 70Nm is OK 🇮🇹
Lol yup
World's darkest garage
It just seems dark on camera
@@normalguysupercar it's your thang. No worries. It looks like the ceiling tiles or whatever is there is very very dark so nothing gets reflected back down.
Old clutch didn't look that worn did it? ruclips.net/video/xkheuDRr_cw/видео.html
Nope not bad
Are you filming in a dark garage? Please improve lighting....
Ok
NAA Say The Guy Who Over Torques a 6mm bolt by 30 Ft. Lbs Enought to Snap it a Mechanic Would Replace the Rear Main Seal And pilot Bearing
Yup
Lol. It looks like quite a shitty job. At least it's still better than a A or B class Mercedes where you have to take out the whole damn engine with the transmission
Oh that's fun lol
Sorry, but any experienced mechanic could look at those long skinny m6 or whatever bolts and know there’s NO WAY to torque them at 70 Nm.
Yeah, I'm not a mechanic, I'm a software engineer. And I was certainly questioning it.
I wouldn’t be ok not knowing the correct torque for those bolts. Peace of mind if it’s my car, liability if I was selling it.
Yeah
Is josh going to inspect your work because you guys are not Lambo mechanics
Not really
I would be totally indimidated trying to replace a clutch on any car let alone a Lambo. Y'all got balls!
The service manual for the Gallardo is hot garbage. You might get a torque spec, you might not. If it's there, maybe it's wrong, maybe not? Clearly writing the manual was left to the interns. At some point I just started using the torque specs from my NSX's manual for the same size thread-pitch/diameter bolt into the appropriate material (e.g. threaded into AL). There is no service manual quite as thorough as a Japanese service manual.
Haha accurate
Un boulon qui casse sur une Ferrari sans comprendre pourquoi, on dit : it’s Ferrari!! Maintenant on pourra dire aussi : it’s Lamborghini!! 😆
Pretty much.
Lots of pulling, wiggling, grunting, and frustration. Apparently pulling a transmission is a lot like se..... nevermind
Lol
