Is the GEN 1 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera WORTH IT?

- After owning 4 Ferraris (2 F430s, 458, 599) I've decided to try a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. Will I love it or hate it? Is the E-Gear transmission just as bad as everyone says? Is it better or worse than the Ferrari F430? What about the 430 Scuderia? Is the E-Gear as good as the Ferrari F1 transmission? I discuss and answer all of these questions on my review of the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera.

Great review, I have driven both a Gallardo with stock then lowered suspension and can confirm the bouncy ride your getting is a 100% byproduct of the lowering springs. Get some new coils and shocks on there and it will be worlds different. The struts are probably worn from the lowering springs as well. Lastly when you get the new clutch installed they will reset the touch points and the slow speed lurch will be improved.
Yeah, we're changing out the clutch so we'll see how it improves.
The car is not on lowering springs. It is on stock springs. The gen 1 Superleggera is bouncy because it is oversprung, pure and simple.
When you lower the car on stock springs, you don't change the preload. All you do is moving the spring perch down.
In the intro video he stated the car was lowered. Visually it looks lower then a stock Gen 1 SL. KW has a coil over kit available for the SL.
Having owned a gallardo, and driven a few R8. The R8 is the answer to a nice ride 🤣
@@alexpsx3 Early Gallardos had factory coilovers and don't need lowering springs to lower unlike the 5.2L gallardos
I really love this first gen Superleggera, but the Ferrari are another level, if you compare with the Scuderia, not even the last generation of the Superleggera comes close! Ferrari does everything better, anyone who has driven knows what I'm talking about, it's much more exciting to drive the Ferrari, not to mention the Ferrari is faster, the Scuderia still impresses me to this day! But it doesn't take away the merit of the Lambo which is also an excellent car, and in this first generation it has the best sound of the Lambos V10
I think it's closer and not as obvious a difference.
I know what you mean about Ferrari cars. I live breathe and drink Ferrari. To me God made people who just makes art out of nothing and Ferrari have so many of these artists. My dream though is to own a 1984 288 Gto. It's the most beautiful Ferrari in the world but sadly I will have to sell my kidneys and my liver (and those of my children) to own one. But from what you wrote I can see we share the same passion for Ferraris
@@willemvandernest3249 My high school yearbook quote was “…and driving a 288 GTO”.
Maybe we can combine the sales and split the car?
Once you work for a Ferrari dealer you realize how much of shitboxes they are. Lamborghini is not far behind.
@@normalguysupercar I'd tend to agree. Unless you're tracking them regularly the "which is faster and has better specs" contest is largely irrelevant. They're both more than fast enough to get you into a lot of trouble anywhere that 97% of owners would take them. Once you can get past that it becomes more about fun factor and quality of life issues (ease of ingress/egress, how is it on longer drives, etc), and those can be pretty subjective.
Great to see you getting into something besides a Ferrari! I think this is a GREAT step for your channel. I'm really looking forward to the new content with the Superleggera!
Thanks!
@@normalguysupercar Rich here... Sold my Spider 348 and bought an E-Gear Gallardo. Currently we are on a road trip all over Florida. Left Pensacola, with stops in Lakeland, St Pete, Port ST Lucie, Palm Beach, and finally to Miami. After this trip I am completely in love with the car. I love the E-Gear. Ill be looking to get ECU and TCU tunes. I added a Kline exhaust with Fabspeed test pipes and the sound is nothing short of a symphony. I think I will log 2400 or so miles for the week.
@@revvedupadventures sounds great I’ve just yesterday here in Australia bought a 2012 550 2 with only 11k miles on. Excited to get it.
I used to fly out of St Lucie and lived in Vero for a year
Well.. when I saw your big smile in the Gallardo .. I think it’s just a matter of time before we see you in a Huracan 😀😉👍🏼 .
Lol
The whole thing with the E-Gear is there IS a learning curve on how to drive it properly. Once you learn the little tricks and such (ALWAYS put it in Sport) it's really second nature. And like others have said, the E-Gear is part of the character of the Gallardo. It's why my wife loves her 2009 LP560-4 Gallardo. While she loves the Huracan also (we got to do an hour test drive event from our local dealer this past summer) but the dual clutch is so smooth and there is no drama with the car. Yeah, it's stupid fast but the Gallardo with E-Gear still gives that "old school" Lamborghini feel. It's what give the Gallardo part of it's charm. Plus, in our area, Huracans are everywhere but you don't really see Gallardo, let along LP models. Such an awesome car and she loves it (and the color, Giallo Midas). Lamborghini does pearl colors so well.
The kill the pearl colors. Yeah, I find the Gallardo endearing in a way.
@@normalguysupercar great word describing the car. The Gallardo is IMHO the last of the "old school" Lamborghinis with the single clutch.
Oh, Dan, I'm sure you read up on the E-Gear, but ALWAYS put the transmission in Sport before you drive. If left in auto, it's what wears down the clutch the most (because the clutch in auto never fully engages, hence faster wear). Sport or Corsa (in later versions). 👍
Good to see your a normal supercar guy youtuber ignoring criticism and only liking the good comments. Its people like you that make people like me not want to own one yet we love them so much. Im about to buy a rare stick shift 2004 Gallardo but thinking I have to hang out with people who dont like me makes me hesitant to buy one. Why are car people jealous of each other? idk it bugs me you have to dress a certain way live a certain way or your not accepted in these posh car communities.
Eh I think you'll find there's a wide range of personalities in the car world
You may need to rearrange the garage wall and make room for some Lamborghini signage. I’m just sayin 😉
LOL true.
That is a tough car to get rid of. It will appreciate for sure. Good investment.
Yeah it will certainly
You're really good at doing reviews!
Well thank you!
Your Italian lesson for the day…it’s phoenetically pronounced: “ah ron cho” or you can use “ah ron cho nay” if you’re not sticking with the color title from Lambo…. Grazie mille for these videos on “IL Trattore” (The Tractor)
Thanks! I'm terrible with foreign (fo-ren) works. 😉
u need to get in touch with vf engineering, there supercharger is the bomb....
Eh Na it's fast enough
Dan, I've always been amazed at the short lifespan of clutches in supercars. I've own LOTS of American and foreign (German & Japanese) manual transmission cars and they all went over 100K on a clutch.
I replaced the 98% wear on my clutch and had to get a new flywheel when I first bought my 360. Ungh, welcome to Supercar ownership. I have 37,500+ miles on my clutch and I still have 62% life left on it. Note: I push the car hard and drive it. Heh, I guess I don’t drive it like an idiot and ‘Press B’ and stand on it like a video game on every launch, LOL.
Nice! I'm at 25,000 on my 2012 Gallardo's original clutch- the last 15,000 of which has been mostly stoplight-to-stoplight city driving. After a recent service I'm told I have 33% left, so the day of reckoning is nearing, but worth it nonetheless.
So true Gary. But the materials on these clutches is made of a softer carbon etc to give it more grip because of the power it puts out. I would have loved if they gave a harder option on them for people who drive their super cars like normal every day cars.
Well, they aren't designed like a typical clutch. Plus most clutch cars are actual manuals, not E-Gear/F1 computer controlled like these. So humans can typically do a better job at managing clutch life.
Nice color
Thanks
Those shifts are so brutal... I'm shocked the clutch lasts 40k miles lol. I never paid much attention to the Gallardo but this looks like so much fun. As far as the e-gear goes... I say it's part of the character of the car. Everything has gotten so good these days that true enthusiasts are looking for something you actually have to drive. I think this definitely qualifies.
Yeah, I don't necessarily want a perfect car, I like some flaws that give it character.
40k miles on an e-gear Gallardo clutch... Hmm unlikely. more like 8k if you're lucky.
@@normalguysupercar I'd still like to see you drive a "normal" 1st gen with the gated manual, just to compare how different it feels compared to the Superleggera.
@@normalguysupercar You mean like a dogshit transmission that's guaranteed to fail and will cost 10000+ to repair? What an idiotic statement.
the faster the shifts the less the clutch is slipping therefore leads to longer clutch life. they say that in all auto single clutch cars you should run them in the fastest shifting speed for this exact reason
Great video, interesting and subtle differences from my LP Gallardo. Mine is a 2012 with the standard brakes and they are the same way, some times they have an On/Off feel at slow speeds. Also, look up going into neutral at full stops... supposed to save the clutch some as well. No idea if it actually helps but would love to hear your take on it compared to other single clutch systems you have driven.
Thanks
Hey Dan, you know those neighbors who used to like you…🤣 Good lord that thing is LOUD on ignition.

Having had a TT 06 SE gated car, and now a TT LP560 e-gear car, I'd like to see you review an LP Gallardo. I think you'll find everything else trumps the sound of the pre-LP. I myself find the Huracan driving experience underwhelming, feels like an Audi.
Yeah the Huracan wasn't as soulful as the Gallardo to me
The 5.0 Engine is not a True Lamborghini Engine. The original V10 that Lamborghini had in the 90’s was not used in the Gallardo as it could not be made to create enough power to compete with Ferrari 360, which this car was aimed at competing with. The 5.0 Engine in the Gallardo has its DNA rooted in the dry sump Audi 4.2V8 engine along with a new 4 valve cylinder head developed by Cosworth Engineering, the casting and engineering divisions were owned by VW Audi at the time, having sold the racing division to Ford. In fact the first 5.0 V10s were initially created at Cosworth Engineering in the UK, before being fitted out at an Audi facility in Hungary and delivered to Lamborghini pretty much complete. The sound characteristic of the Gen 1 cars with 5.0 engines is down to the even firing interval of 72 degrees and split crank pins between opposing cylinders, whereas the 5.2 has firing intervals of 92 degrees and 58 degrees with common pins. Lost of people have the misconception that the 5.0 is pure Lamborghini, when quite the opposite is true.
Well there you go
Had my Grigio Telesta 08 Superleggera for over 4 years, wouldn't swap it for anything else.
Looks like you still have the standard cats on, you should look to remove them as the internal material breaks down, gets ingested into the engine and can cause damage - most engine failures have been attributed to this very issue. Either decat or use something like the Larini sports cats.
E-gear is fine, just drive it like a manual, slight lift on changes and always keep it in sport :) It's 20 yr old tech and modern DCT is just plain dull in comparison. Enjoy.
New exhaust coming
Ferraris drive wayyy better in my opinion, but lambos are less temperamental
I like the drive of Ferraris better too, but this was a shitload of fun.
Wow somebody left their ipod in the glovebox? Score?! I haven't seen an ipod in general in years. Wonder what content is on the one in the lambo. Could be a small time capsule. Maybe a separate video on that?
We absolutely need a report on the music on that ipod!
LOL Ok, I'll see what gems are on the playlist.
You should do a video on how to properly park the Gallardo.
Ok
Lowered Gallardo = disaster. Noted. 😂
It's a PITA getting in/out but otherwise, looks amazing.
take the cats off and straight pipe it.. then tell me about the sound.. It will sound 100x more amazing..
Soon. :)
Great video! The Gallardo is the best deal if someone wants to get the real flavor of owning an Italian supercar. True Lambo experience for under $100k for a base older one, but just know that WHEN it breaks, which it WILL break, it'll remind you that it's still a Lamborghini when you get the bill. lol I want a Huracan but I'm having so much trouble letting go of my Gallardo as I've never felt more connected with a car like I do with this one. It's like a relationship with a smoking hot crazy girl you just can't leave. So much fun when it's not torturing you that you forget about the torture in between.
LOL so the Gallardo is the smoking hot yet crazy girlfriend? Got it!
@@normalguysupercar exactly! I always saw the Ferrari as that smart classy hot girl from a good family that was too good for me. And crazy is always more fun anyways. lol
So glad to see the start of you doing a decent review of a great car.
Unfortunately many previous reviews have focused too much on image and not the actual car.

I'm not a fan of the exterior. It looks too utilitarian to me. I much prefer the curves of the F430. Its like a sexy woman. This thing looks and has all the charm of a door wedge. The interior is on point though.
It's definitely NOT a sexy car, it's aggressive and punch you in the face. No doubt Ferraris are more beautiful.
I wish the 430 was still a sub $100k car
Yeah
Little tip! When you are approaching stop lights(or coming to any stop) pull in both paddles to get into Neutral, and cost the last 10 meters. Saves it jerking to a stop.
Ah yeah when it disengages the clutch at about 5mph.
Amazing-I LOVE IT (although I’ve wanted a Huracan for a while, this is sooo good)

I can't wait to see Meg's review!
It's good.
Well I've sat my ass in many super cars as I restored them for 30 years more vintage but I have to say I bought a special edition two-wheel drive by color it's the gray it's a second generation and it is more fun than you can imagine see the car has a lot of abilities but it's abilities or only as good as you're driving abilities if you're not a driver you won't enjoy it The raw the roughness of it that's what makes the car what it is it's a piece of history it's something that'll go down in time is being the first and one of the best
Yeah, the unrefined nature of the car is endearing. I enjoyed it a lot.
Cant wait for Meg's disinterested review!

Thanks!
Does the e-gear use the pump and accumulator from the Alfa 147/156 Selespeed (Magnetti Marelli)? I know the 360F1 did.
Probably. I haven't looked into that yet.
04-05 e-gear is really bad. 06 it was passable. I think by the time the superleggera came out it was decent. Ferrari’s F1 box was always a step or two ahead of e-gear.
Yeah that seems plausible. I'd love to try different years and see
@@normalguysupercar 04-05 are the ones famous for 10k mile clutch life. 04 had completely different gears/ratios in trans as well. They ended up changing it for 05+ to get the car to crack into the high 3s range 0-60. The trans programming also got somewhat settled in 06. Still a few years behind Ferrari though.
When the Gallardo came out i instantly hated it ...why ? The doors didnt go up i felt it was blasphemy it really took years for me to get past that however over the years ive come to really like the car i think this was a great pick for the channel .

Lamborghini is a brand for posers. Definitely a downgrade from the 458.
You don’t know what you’re talking about. Having experienced many of Lamborghini’s special edition models, they are definitely no poser cars.

Hi Dan,
Sorry to bother you, how are planning to check the measurement on the clutch, in that what I mean which diagnostic equipment you are going to use? Between 2004-2008 Gallardo are specific to the LaRa diagnostic software.
We're going to use a texa most likely

Nice
Can't beet the Gen 1 v10 sound
It's pretty awesome.
Totally agree with the review Dan. Consider doing egear lines too if they haven't been done. On the 5.0L gallardos, the egear lines run over the exhaust, very close to the cat in a fire sheath but they still get hot. Many have popped hoses.
Yeah I can see that
With its slightly dead handling and propensity to understeer unless you really take liberties (hard in public), I have a feeling this car could get quite boring, quite quickly. It's the classic rental supercar. Ferrari ownership just offers something more.
E Gear is fine. I think it's better made than the F1s. The biggest problem with single clutches isn't their characteristics, it's the maintenance bills and clutches that die in no time. In saying that, when a DCT goes bad then more often than not it's a new gearbox time..
EH, I don't know, I found it pretty engaging.
@@normalguysupercar interesting. I do think we have very different, more challenging roads in the UK! :)
Nice video. So I was thinkibg you should swap out the black lights for stock, unlower the car back to stock-to get the body roll back and quiet that ride down-, and leave the exhauat stock, then flip her for $172k. Can't wait for the next car.
No way. That's boring as hell.
I think Meg will hate it for being bumpy, but she will enjoy the power.
Probably a good guess.
i hate to say that that lambo is in immaculate condition. love that alcantara or whatever internal material is.

Dan, I drove a Huracan Evo almost 4000 miles through Europe this past summer. It was the car journey of my life till next Europe rally :). It was not my choice to drive said Lamborghini as i booked a Ferrari Pisa, but the prior renter broke something so i got to do my trip in a Lamborghini Evo. From Day 1 I was out to see what the Lambo could do and how fast I could break it as i was pissed that i rented a Ferrari and got forced into a Evo. (And i had to pay extra too) It was my only choice as we were there for a rally and i think we had every fast car in Europe rented. I drove that Evo 10 10's and other than not being able to see out of it, as im 6"2 that trip changed my mind a LITTLE on Lamborghini. That EVO took everything I tossed at it including bouncing off the rev limiter at top speed :) and just kept on asking to be punched more and more. Its a nice car to drive but Im never going to own one as they are made for 5 foot tall hundred fifty pound little boys who will never be real men.
Lol yup. The new lamborghinis are pretty stout for sure
Now, don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of Lamborghini cars. However, if you purchase a modern era Lamborghini you are driving something that is basically 50% German DNA. When you buy a Ferrari it’s always 100% Ferrari Italian. Once again, I am a fan of Lamborghini, but there is a reason why there’ll always be more prestige behind Ferrari over Lamborghini. Just saying. Awesome car, looking forward to more videos 👍🏻

on a gen1 gallardo make sure the cats have been changed as they deteriorate over time then the fragments destroy the engine.
for the egear always put it in neutral when sitting in traffic and reversing up hill eats the clutch.
you can also get a cheap iPod connector to Bluetooth adaptor on eBay that makes the audio system more user friendly (Bovee adapter)

@@nzguy9336 had mine for just over 3 years now and still love it. I have got an expression of interest in for the upcoming Aston Martin vanquish vision when it finally gets released (a baby mid engined mainstream Valkyrie) so will be trading in the gallardo on that
The neutral at stops is actually to save the throw out bearing, not the clutch.
I know your replacing the clutch so enjoy what’s left however I own a 04 verde Ithaca e-gear. Always drive in sport mode, and put in neutral down hills and at stop lights. Don’t baby it on take off… so it’s doesn’t drag, and it will engage quicker will def prolong clutch. Just did a clutch job and brakes on my car. Awesome...interested in your take here. Been looking at my first "exotic" but unlike you I really don't want to have to work on it as I have seen folks spend $30+k never to see it again on just piddly maint stuff. Post LP Gallardo seems amazingly reliable, but getting more interested in the pre LP like yours for cost, engine sound, and a little bit of swaying towards being more lambo than audi. Great video!

“Make the exhaust a little louder”. You have to make it louder than effspot. He has set the bar.
Don't worry... We'll give it a good shot.
I’ve spent a lot of time in a 2nd gen gallardo superleggera and can tell you that it is an awesome car but super old and classic feeling. The one I used to drive had a votsteiner kit on it which looks incredible, and you can’t go wrong with any exhaust setup.
My one complaint is how long the gears are, there isn’t much you can do about that but it’s something to note. Another “problem” is how small the shift paddles are, you may want to swap those out for some aftermarket ones similar to the 458.
Can’t wait to see more content on this car and what you do with it
Yeah, it really would benefit from a 7 speed trans.
Taking out on a first date might not be a good idea, but if you want to go out and play two birds one stone
Lol yup
Wow, that’s a real Badass Gangster Projectile! And the mechanical external noises combined with the throaty exhaust and air intake is in another league. Mix that with internal cabin Humming at higher speeds it sounds like you are sat in the cockpit of a Fighter Jet.
It’s obvious from your reactions and facial expressions you are genuinely taken in by the whole experience. Coming from the Ferrari I bet you really didn’t expect the Lambo to have such an effect on you as it does.
This project is going to be great viewing, very excited for upcoming content Dan. You’ve picked a winner with this 👍🏻
Yeah I didn't think I'd be so smitten with the Gallardo honestly.
Unpopular opinion: the pre lp gallardo and murcielago are the best version of their respective chassis.
A front lip on that factory bumper and the rear inlets/fins on the top of quarter panels in carbon fiber and it’d be perfect 👌
Would love to see a manual conversion project, but literally any content to do with this thing is good watching material.
And arancio borealis might be one of the best shades of paint out there, verde ithaca too…
That color is tremendous
My R8 V10 sounded like that. When I took my friends for a ride, they would ask are you doing that ? I said no, it's how it sounds when your shifting, especially down shifting. It's a rush. My 430 doesn't sound like that when I down shift. It pops, I have Novitec exhaust.
Nice.
NGS Last Year on Lambos: Meh
NGS This year on Lambos: It's perfect!
Lol accurate
Such a sick car! I can't wait to hear the Kline goodness.
Me either!
Great video Dan. One issue I have with my first Gen Gallardo is the fact that Lamborghini has done a terrible job at keeping parts stocked for these cars and in general providing the infrastructure to keep these older cars on the road. For example - ball joints. When they go, they can’t simply be replaced like on a Ferrari as they are built into the control arm itself. You need to buy complete control arms - WHICH Lamborghini stopped manufacturing. Old stock has also since long dried up. Another thing, when you take off the rear grilles and bumper, be careful - VERY careful. The skeleton behind the bumper which has the mounting points for the grilles is made from a plastic which over time becomes VERY brittle from the heat. If you’re rough you’ll break the mounting points off - in my case, several were already broken off and the skeleton itself is shattered. This piece cannot be bought from Lamborghini - you’d have to as I will, find an aftermarket solution OR buy a brand new complete rear bumper assembly. Annoying, but you have to pay to play I suppose.
Yeah that is a problem
Dan, would be great if you coukd highlight any aftermarket/alternative parts that you use.
Thanks for your honest review! You will learn how to shift the clutch correctly. On my LP, never normal mode, always in sport, neutral at the lights. Slight relax the gas on the shift and wow, its an awesome experience. Just love mine and your SL is dam beautiful!! You will get it figured out !! I agree the Huracan is a more refined and perhaps less "Lamborghini Feel?" . Gallardo experience is just awesome for sure!!!! Gotta love the SL
The neutral at lights think is only to prolong the life of the throw out bearing... It's not really necessary
@@normalguysupercar lol looks like there are a lot of us who were incorrectly directed to “put it in neutral”

Dan as you know, Ferraris with ceramic brakes are also a bit on-off switch.
If I may offer up a suggestion. Change the brake fluid to the Castrol React SRF Racing. As you probably know, it's one of the highest regarded brake fluids on the market for both high performance cars and racers alike, but it has interesting little benefit. It is ever so slightly compressible. This means that it's a great fluid for grabby brakes as it provides better modulation. Being it because of grabby race pads or just an overly sensitive brake pedal, it just works.
Give it a try, it's not cheap but I think you'll like it.
That's not true at all! I have driven lots of Ferraris with ceramic brakes and they were NOWHERE near this touchy.

I'm not saying they are AS bad, but they definitely are very sensitive. That holds true for my 488 Spider, 812 GTS and my Pista. I'm one of your fellow Fchatters, so not something I pull out of a hat. Back in the day my 458 was the same. Oddly, my Lusso feels very different. I suppose the brake system is valved differently.
Anyway, the point was not to get into an argument about it, but rather to share my experience with a brake fluid that might help. I run Surface Transforms ceramic discs on the Pista with Pagid RSL1 race pads, and with normal fluid on public roads you use the brake as if the pedal was made of glass. The Castrol improved the modulation significantly.
Just a friendlyvadvice from one enthusiast to another.
Hi Dan. It is amusing to see a Lambo surrounded by everything Ferrari :)
LOL yes.
I had a gallardo and just sold it for a Huracan. I loved the gallardo but really love the Huracan.
Not to take anything away from the Huracan, but they’re like the Camry of Supercars, a car that you can drive everyday and will still be dependable
They are amazing cars for sure.
Do you need to change the factory Catalytic Converters? I heard that they can fail and destroy your engine.
We are.
@@normalguysupercar I replaced mine with Larini Cat, light weight and amazing sound.
I am actually looking at this almost exact spec tomorrow! Getting excited.
Nice!
