The trap is that we tend to think we have to DO something with our lives, as if that validates it. What a huge presumption! Most of us have little idea of what life is and what we are.
F Tekin Cheer me up? You fucking mad? This is the most depressing speech I've ever heard in my fucking life! And I'm still 26! It makes me feel so fucking depressed and nostalgic! You have no idea what you're talking about!
Actually it is a newspaper column by Mary Schmich, published by the Chicago Tribune on 01 June 1997... thenre-sed various times in different way, the most famous of which is the successful music single "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)", released in 1998, by Baz Luhrmann (the one you listen in this movie :)).. for more info just goole "sunscreen advice" ^_^
One of the best movies I've seen. Explores the philosophy of life on a quite deep level. Need to get the DVD asap. Ps Danny devito character speech was epic.
First time listening to this since my best friend passed away. Really hits different considering the first time i thought i understood this was before i ever endured any real loss. At the same time, this hits different with every major life event. So well done.
I don't consider this to be the final monologue because it isn't an actual part of the movie nor was it made for the movie. Dani Devito has the final monologue right before when he's explaining to Bob how he has no character. It is one of the best monologues in film I think
Take this monologue and change the context it is in. This is the philosophy all teenagers should live by instead of choosing being negative and angry at everyone. Kindness and love is the way forward.
This monologue is so inspirational for me!! Powerful, true advices that too often we just forget to follow. Life is a too precious thing to waste worring about the future all the time, better live in the present, at this moment and enjoy it all!! :)
Great words of wisdom. Interesting that atleast 3 are about "looks" and "weight". It's a common hang-up. I thought I was overweight for most of my youth. Now I understand that getting fixated on calories and low-fat (processed) food is actually why I gained weight. Eating balanced meals (back to the basics!) helped me lose weight 16 years ago.
It is really amazing, how great movies are going under the radar. Now days cinemas full of batman who knows what number and other crap. Looks like somebody is trying to feed trush to new generation and we,as society, will regret it soon. This movie really makes you think about yourself, about life. I wish I could see more movies like that.
@TroopahFTW it's in the movie! if you haven't watched the movie already, which I suppose you haven't, you should! This is a greate movie, and I think all of if is available as parts here on youtube.
I don't think that is the meaning. It's not "confused", but it is "not settled". It's not "not knowing", it's "not choosing" one thing, "not limiting" yourself.
It's all said hoping that people won't feel sorry for themselves and waste time on it. You can't honestly pep talk somebody telling them "Hey if you're not sure about your life at 30 it's ok... but at 50 you're a loser"... that's not a pep talk :D the "but at 50 you're a loser" it's the non written part that should come from common sense... and if you don't have common sense, well the advices were not for you to begin with :)
this monologue is simply telling you that if you are confused and lost don't worry about it and just stay confused and lost. Most successful people on this planet are those who knew what they wanted to do of their lives, maybe not at 20 but at least at their late thirties. 50 is the age in which you should be collecting the fruits you wisely planted during your life. So please do not think it is OK to still not know what to do of your life at 40 or 50. It only means you are a loser.
I think anybody who wakes up one day and decides they should try and do something else with their life is pretty brave. Most people just choose whatever was most obvious and prefer not think to deep if it's what they really wanted from life. Of course, if you stick to the one thing you'll probably end up with more money, but economical feasability and philosophical virtue rarely go hand in hand. Deciding who wins at life by their bank statement isn't particularly virtuous.
The trap is that we tend to think we have to DO something with our lives, as if that validates it. What a huge presumption! Most of us have little idea of what life is and what we are.
David Sumeray amen to that
Thanks for that
What does a cat DO with its life? It is a cat.
Cats are animals. We are animals.
if this doesn't cheer you up I don't know what would....

First time listening to this since my best friend passed away. Really hits different considering the first time i thought i understood this was before i ever endured any real loss. At the same time, this hits different with every major life event. So well done.
"...And to Those I Love, Thanks for Sticking Around"
I love you guys.

best monologue of all time, IMHO
wise words - so simple and evident but so hard to keep in mind
Take this monologue and change the context it is in.
This is the philosophy all teenagers should live by instead of choosing being negative and angry at everyone.
Kindness and love is the way forward.
Try telling that to a teenager! They're in emotional hell
"youth is wasted on the young"......the whole point of the devito monologue
the most truthful monologue of all time....
The Big Kahuna final Monologue Marco Oriolesi,Excellent
Such an underrated and amazing movie
This monologue is so inspirational for me!! Powerful, true advices that too often we just forget to follow. Life is a too precious thing to waste worring about the future all the time, better live in the present, at this moment and enjoy it all!! :)
"I DID check everyone's name tag and anyone not wearing a name tag, I came right out and ASKED, "What's YOUR NAME, BOY?"-Larry Mann, April Po.

fabulous..just fabulous..

This movie really makes you think about yourself, about life.
I wish I could see more movies like that.
This is how music should sound like.
I still remember the first time watching this part
I would have enjoyed this so much more if it was actually spoken by Kevin Spacey.
Agreed!
excellent advice
this is sooooo good.
its called the Sunscream song
@TroopahFTW
it's in the movie! if you haven't watched the movie already, which I suppose you haven't, you should! This is a greate movie, and I think all of if is available as parts here on youtube.

2 people knows exactly what to do with their life at 22 years old! :-)
All you need to know in your life is here. Nothing less nothing more
aldığım alacağım en iyi öğüt(ler).
what is the song?
this is a monologue by Kurt Vonnegut
Wear Sunscreen by Baz Lurhman and others. It's based on a short article titled "Advice like youth, probably wasted on the young" by Mary Schmich.
Hermoso
4 People didn't trust him...on the sunscreen..
nice, i laugh at the vocals in the background all the time
How did the movie end. Did Bob get the account?
it is to hard to hear what he is saying cos of the music, is there a version where the music is somewhat muted? I would really like that :-D
I wish there were subtitles as I do not understand spoken English on a movie.....
someone here has written the transcript.
cicci uzzu Fucking start studying it then! Like I did! Self-taught! Lazy moron!
Wanna Dabba Doo until they turn off the tapwater.
Is there any way to actually BUY this song?
4:11 GEORGIO Armani :)
P.S: I love this monologue and I agree with every single word
Hate to point out this is not a monologue, but a list of things. Still, it strikes where it shoud: right to your heart, passing up your butt. Amen?
actually it iS a monologue.....its one person talking to the audience......maybe call it an epilogue?
I don't think that is the meaning. It's not "confused", but it is "not settled". It's not "not knowing", it's "not choosing" one thing, "not limiting" yourself.
Didn't Mary just win the Pulitzer?
how do you know?
that is so depressing
Why...WHY didn’t the young guy talk to the big shot????
Exactly .. He could talk religion, but in the end, just leave the damn cards.
Sounds like Vonnegut but was it really?
Is this added by this RUclipsr or is it actually in the movie?
Its in the movie
The Big Kahuna
listen the one in italian..... better...
Not a monologue.
@leandros1236 I think you need to pay attention to your literacy skills before anything else, hombre.
It's all said hoping that people won't feel sorry for themselves and waste time on it.

It’s been 10 years, I hope your judgmental nature has changed. If not, then you missed the entire point of the song. Give it another listen.
This movie is a load of crap.
worst advise I've ever heard.
