Hey Linus, just to let you know: I and my 2 brothers grew up together and so we had similar interests, especially when It came to videogames. So we all played pokemon, we all got the new gameboys, we all had the Pokemon games. And dude, having different Versions meant you can never get all pokemon but we got ourselfes that cable and exchanging pokemon and stuff, using it for exploits to clone shinies and all that sh*t.. it was a great time, I tell ya we were the pokemon dealers amongst friends! To be fair, I entirely agree with him XD. Nintendo has a very very bad habit of doing that sort of stuff in all of their games. For example, even back with Animal Crossing NH when it was everywhere, almost everyone complained about the long animations and repetitive dialogue and menu items that you need to go through just to get to the option you want. It's really more of a matter that they do this for functions you are obviously going to use frequently enough that it becomes incredibly annoying. Classic Nintendo.

Friends got the kit, i was amazed the gates are just simple cardboard for a heavy $99.. and not even a hour later, the start/finish pillars were already torn.
The company I worked for commissioned Nintendo Japan to put up a VR arcade that included Mario Cart. It was a 4 player game with the default characters being Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi, and in that order. So yeah, spot on the character selection there, Linus!
The idea is cool. I think it would be better if people can race virtually. You would still need to buy the kit to design the race court. But it would be nice to have it posted online for anyone (max 12 players) to join or to have a group of your friends (max 12 players) to play together. You would have to have the game to play. It would be good to be able to add more gates. One can design it outdoors. The gates would take a snap shot of the area and save it as part of the racing court. The gates don't have to be there permanently. It would just be uploaded online.

I believe the reason why there's limited available characters is because they're testing the waters. If this eventually becomes successful, they will add more.
They should definitely come out with a PRO version with longer range, for tournament use. Up to 8 gates and 8 players with 8 different models available. I am worried Nintendo just wants this to be a fad instead and cut support. They could have an ongoing Mario Kart live RC business with races all over the world and enthusiasts spending $150 each for all 8 new PRO models.
There is actually a toy that was being sold 12 years ago very much like this. Difference was that it was in radio shacks everywhere and had race tracks but it did most of the interactive combat functions in this toy. What nintendo did was add their license and remove the prebuilt tracks. I'm very impressed to say the least.
130CAD is actually not very expensive for an RC car with a camera like this. The WLToys K989 they used as early prototype is about 70$ a cheap FPV camera is around 30 and the FPV monitor or goggles can range from 100 to 700$. That's not including the software developpement that went into it.

@@northgen1062 Video games are a far bigger part of their culture than any other country. Everyone games, from kids to old people. Very few people consider it bad, nerdy or childish. When everyone of your friends plays video games, having different versions of the same game adds to the fun, since it's a given that everyone will be buying it.
They should have released a generic car (maybe a future version) with a space for a swappable driver character. You go to the store, buy your character, and insert it in the driver position. A small chip identifies the character and then it shows up in game with all animations. If they make the characters so the base is the smae, then any character could be sized to fit. This would allow them to sell the figurines and get this, SWITCH characters...
I couldn't play with this. I have two cats, a rather dark home and I'm already WAY TOO OCD about how dirty the floor is, I don't need Mario to show me.

The original Pokemon games were not a logistical issue if you were a kid when they came out! Pretty much every kid I knew had a game boy with one of the pokemon games and anyone with siblings owned a link cable, so it was never an issue to find someone to trade with.
I'd keep it like it is, a mario kit and luigi kit, then add at least 4 more extra karts. princess, bowser, yoshi and DK to start. After that make special edition stand alone karts, ones like link and zelda, toad, koppa, metroid, and let other companies join in. Like marvel and disney or DC comics. Wolverine vs batman would awesome. Plus if they built water proof, tougher ones, they could bank on that too.
Next Step. Use all that fabrication equipment, and tech-wizardry to make huge AR gates, and build full-size carts and have full-sized AR racing... that's the future right there.
I think Nintendo should offer more gates/numbers that aren't just 1-4 replacements. This is a starter kit, but for once I hope there's some kinda expansion pass (like Labo).
Surpsied they didn't make the colouring on the kart removable, and go with an amibo style character, so you can swap then out... if you pay more! Eg, buy the "Peach" pack, and replace the red M with the peach panel, and put a peach character in the seat.
Buy more of those sets with different characters and make a live mario racing video in your office / warehouse. It will worth your money since not everyone has access or the mean to do it.
Please do some kind of a tear down, it would be a huge help to those of us thinking about modding it before dropping the $100. I’d love to rip out the electronics / camera, and hook it all up to my buddies suped up 60 MPH+ monster RC cars. Now THATS an LTT video.
to be fair, the pokemon trading thing was sort of designed for Japan where all the kids had a game boy and they all want to get their hands on the latest nintendo games for social status reasons so basically all the boys had a pokemon game. Still remember seeing classmates having trades and gladiatorial cockfights to the death with their pride, prestige and snacks on the line during lunch time.
Typically for an fpv drone or fpv rc car, it can easily be $100+. Considering this is $100 for the kart and the game that allows you to interface with the kart this is a cost effective gateway to the fpv hobby. I may not get it myself (dont own a switch) but I'm all for people getting this

The limited selection of karts is a bit strange for a Nintendo toy, usually they are made with collectability in mind. With up to 4 players in the games, it would have made sense to have at least 4 characters. Nintendo collectors (or toy collectors in general) would have been all over them, and it would have made sense. Maybe they are waiting to see if this selles well before deciding on whether to release more characters, but at that price it's likely not going to sell huge numbers.

Well said. Nintendo gets pretty greedy, but they also hands down have easily 100% the most creative concepts out there.

Buy more of those sets with different characters and make a live mario racing video in your office / warehouse. It will worth your money since not everyone has access or the mean to do it.

Please do some kind of a tear down, it would be a huge help to those of us thinking about modding it before dropping the $100. I’d love to rip out the electronics / camera, and hook it all up to my buddies suped up 60 MPH+ monster RC cars. Now THATS an LTT video.
This looks really fun, I could see this working really well for parties, events, and some fun in the pub.
to be fair, the pokemon trading thing was sort of designed for Japan where all the kids had a game boy and they all want to get their hands on the latest nintendo games for social status reasons so basically all the boys had a pokemon game.
Still remember seeing classmates having trades and gladiatorial cockfights to the death with their pride, prestige and snacks on the line during lunch time.
Typically for an fpv drone or fpv rc car, it can easily be $100+. Considering this is $100 for the kart and the game that allows you to interface with the kart this is a cost effective gateway to the fpv hobby. I may not get it myself (dont own a switch) but I'm all for people getting this
Looks amazing ! I have a feeling that Nintendo will bring out more playable characters in their karts in the future. I'm thinking Toad, Yoshi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Wario, Waluigi, Koopa Troopa, Dry Bones and Donkey Kong.

The limited selection of karts is a bit strange for a Nintendo toy, usually they are made with collectability in mind. With up to 4 players in the games, it would have made sense to have at least 4 characters. Nintendo collectors (or toy collectors in general) would have been all over them, and it would have made sense.
Maybe they are waiting to see if this selles well before deciding on whether to release more characters, but at that price it's likely not going to sell huge numbers.
