Never played Red Alarm but Virtua Force was TOPS. It was also a top down shmup with 2 planes of play Wario Land was AMAZING and had background areas that you could jump to. One of the few that I keep a ROM for for emulation TelroBoxer was awesome and one of the only games that really properly used the mirrored controller AND the 3d ability Panic Bomber was pretty okay. I mean, it was panic bomber. WaterWorld (Yes, a licensed movie tie in game) was pretty dang meh Mario Clash was okay, not my cup of tea but good use of 3d for more complex levels. Golf was... golf. Source: own all games listed here but Red Alarm
2020:"Which button did you press to do that?" "I pressed L3." looks at the controller and doesn't find it. 1996:"Which button did you press? The left one or the right one?" I rest my case.
Fun video here! It's always neat seeing people's first experience with it as reactions are always astonishment to various degrees for obvious reasons. Mario's Tennis has a bit of depth to it you may have missed via it's controls and ball height. If you use A, hits the ball hard, B is soft. For the mind games. However, you can also direct the ball as you hit it using the d-pad. down is short, up is long, left and right points the ball to the corresponding sides. If the ball is above your head, you will perform a lob shot. Overall, it's really not that bad and seems a lot like a precursor to the next Mario Tennis on the N64. The only real problem is it's on the Virtual Boy. XD I know nothing about "Hyper Fighting" though, other than that there was supposed to be a Street Fighter II on the Virtual boy, but didn't happen because the Virtual Boy didn't last long. The best game on it is probably Wario Land, so if you can try it, do so. Another good one is Golf, though only has one course. Of course there's also V-Tetris with standard and a mode that's like playing two boards that you can "cycle" one column at a time.
God this brings back memories from my childhood, first time I used one was when I got one rented from a blockbuster video and the 3D look blew me away. I finally was able to buy one later on, and to have one of these as a kid was absolutely amazing. I had Mario’s tennis and warrio land and warrio was the only game I ever beat. This could of been a great system if Nintendo didn’t bastardize it in favor of the N64, and add color to it. Great video, the nostalgia is amazing!
Had the virtual boy, back in the day... I thought it was freaking awesome. It wasn't perfect, but at the time it was a one-of-a-kind. I enjoyed the games, despite the lack of games and unrefined quality. Still LOVED IT! Wish I never woulda got rid of mine... they go for a TON of $$ these days if you can find one.
Google Glasses failed for the mainstream audience, but are actually used by a lot of big companies. In fact, these days there are a couple of different manufacturers for AR glasses that all build them specifically for industrial and manufacturing works.
The Virtual Boy was made by Gunpei Yokoi, the same person who made the Game & Watches and the Game Boy. He was sure the Virtual Boy would be a success due to his past successes... But it failed. He blamed it all on himself and left Nintendo shortly after. He then moved on to Bandai to make a new handheld called the Wonderswan... but he then died in a car crash one month before the Wonderswan was released.
I had one of these, the only game I remember is mario tennis, and honestly it was really cool at the time.. Its just when you would play it for more than an hour you would get a headache from basically any position you tried to play it in, coupled with the straining red light on the eyes.. but still the games were boppin. Plus you gotta think at the time, the two consoles that were out were super nintendo and the sega genesis.. and the 3d was actually pretty good, it does seem to have the almost blue and red glasses effect you see at some movies or w.e.. I always laid on my bed though, and then balanced the things across my eyes.
I read about the vb in 94 before launch and really wanted it. I didn't actually get one until they were in clearance and I loved it. My kids and I played it all the time. And none of us suffered any health effects. Infrared multiplayer would have helped it a lot.

It was also a top down shmup with 2 planes of play
Wario Land was AMAZING and had background areas that you could jump to. One of the few that I keep a ROM for for emulation
TelroBoxer was awesome and one of the only games that really properly used the mirrored controller AND the 3d ability
Panic Bomber was pretty okay. I mean, it was panic bomber.
WaterWorld (Yes, a licensed movie tie in game) was pretty dang meh
Mario Clash was okay, not my cup of tea but good use of 3d for more complex levels.
Golf was... golf.
Source: own all games listed here but Red Alarm
2020:"Which button did you press to do that?"
"I pressed L3." looks at the controller and doesn't find it.
1996:"Which button did you press? The left one or the right one?"
I rest my case.
New title: Luke learns his Virtual Boy doesnt work properly
That was a really great unscripted moment.
I missed seeing Luke in the LTTs
Lol
"RISC is good!" - Luke jumping in with the Hackers reference.

Here's an idea for a drinking game...
Take a shot every time Luke fixes his hair.
XD
I know nothing about "Hyper Fighting" though, other than that there was supposed to be a Street Fighter II on the Virtual boy, but didn't happen because the Virtual Boy didn't last long.
The best game on it is probably Wario Land, so if you can try it, do so. Another good one is Golf, though only has one course. Of course there's also V-Tetris with standard and a mode that's like playing two boards that you can "cycle" one column at a time.
Hackers 1995: Risc is good.
Luke: Risc is good.
Me: haha nice reference
"Reference" ? I thought it was just an objective statement…
…suck it, CISC-enthusiasts !!!
@@PredatoryQQmber lol thats what i thought too
God this brings back memories from my childhood, first time I used one was when I got one rented from a blockbuster video and the 3D look blew me away.
Did you sell it or throw it away
You guys missed the best game for the virtual boy: STARFOX. It felt designed for the 3d effect.
Starfox for Virtual Boy was never released.
It felt that way, huh? So you played the game that never came to be?
@@spork8655 homebrew
@@zsoltpeterdaniel8413 Huh...pretty cool. Do you know if it's entirely homebrew or did somebody unearth the in-progress code from way back?
I could be wrong, but for some reason I recall playing it and loving it.
I'm curious I know there are Virtual Boy emulators that are the 2D versions of the games but has anyone done 3D emulation for Oculus, Vive, or Gear?
Yeah, there's a great one for the Oculus Quest in the sideload app.
The sideloaded emulator on oculus quest does either 2d or 3d modes. Also has different pallets

Linus: Yeah, you like that...
Luke: (grunting moan)
"Don't lose your cool" is the most sass Luke has ever thrown in a video
I'd love a series on failed products! Do one on the Google glass.
Google Glasses failed for the mainstream audience, but are actually used by a lot of big companies.
In fact, these days there are a couple of different manufacturers for AR glasses that all build them specifically for industrial and manufacturing works.
How did you get you Virtual boy in a blue cable??
Modded
I would love to see Luke take his Virtual Boy apart!
Ay it’s Luke from Floatplane!

0:24 I thought they would talk about their sponsor😂
I even skipped this part 😎
I had one of these, the only game I remember is mario tennis, and honestly it was really cool at the time.. Its just when you would play it for more than an hour you would get a headache from basically any position you tried to play it in, coupled with the straining red light on the eyes.. but still the games were boppin.
Plus you gotta think at the time, the two consoles that were out were super nintendo and the sega genesis.. and the 3d was actually pretty good, it does seem to have the almost blue and red glasses effect you see at some movies or w.e.. I always laid on my bed though, and then balanced the things across my eyes.
I remember in 1996 I was playing Mario's tennis on a school field trip on a bus very difficult to to play with the bus bouncing all over the place
Linus:remember when games where hard
Everyone else: you can't even play rocket leauge
I read about the vb in 94 before launch and really wanted it. I didn't actually get one until they were in clearance and I loved it. My kids and I played it all the time. And none of us suffered any health effects. Infrared multiplayer would have helped it a lot.
"Risk is good" - Hackers (Film) reference, true geekdom achieved.
RISC, still a classic line and among the many many moments in the film showing how little the writers knew about computers/hacking.
