Is This an iPhone or a Watercolor Palette? Supervision 24 Bamboo Palette set (Wicked Fancy)

  • Today I am going to unbox one of the most beautiful watercolor palettes I have ever seen! The Supervision 24 half pan set in Bamboo palette: amzn.to/3QMnQhv
*I was sent this palette to review
    Pros:
    Nice color selection
Some unique colors I have not seen before (rare/unusual pigments)
    Colors mix and layer well
    Beautiful palette
Pigment info included on paint wrappers
    Most colors are very transparent
20 out of 24 color are single pigment
    Cons:
The lid is great so not great for using as a mixing palette
I think a couple of the colors have incorrect pigment info.
    Try a class! lindsayweirich.teachable.com
This set could use a strong pure cool read
    Bottom line:
If you like unusually watercolor palettes this is for you. The paint is high quality and preforms well. If you are a beginner I would not recommend this set due to the dark mixing surface (you will need another palette for mixing) and the lack of a real cool primary red for mixing. I do recommend this for seasoned painters who want to try something new. I am glad to have it.

@@RinasAMaker - I have the Mission Gold Pure Pigment, bought back in 2016 and just happened to pull them out and use them yesterday. I think it's a really great set to have but some colors I rarely use. The blues in this set are my Favorites though (Drool!). I think I'm going to be pulling colors from each of my different sets and making a "Hines 47/Frankenstein" palette of the colors that I Know I'll use. Since all my pans are labeled it won't be hard to replace/redo/refill them as needed. And yes, a large oversized tin (5ish by 7ish off Amazon) is my favorite to put my pans in and mix in the lid.

Hey Lindsay ! Thanks for ANOTHER great video ! I’ve had my eye on these paints for a while now, almost 2 years I think. Whenever they first came out I saw them and wanted them but wasn’t sure about the brand at all. I do have their layered Granulating 10color set, I think it was the first set they did like that and love those.
So I just wanted to let you know that Pigment PY12 is a pigment made of both Organic and Azo compound and I believed it also classified as a Diarylide.
I did some research on it for ya :-)

Oddly enough I really enjoy watching you swatch paint, I think it's kind pf calming, with the added bonus of learning about pigments. I'm also seeking some suggestions: I have a 2 1/2 year old granddaughter who is showing interest in making colorful marks on paper. I would like to make her an art journal for her to draw and paint in, and some supplies to glue colorful things together and decorate it. So far the only restriction I have been given, is the colors must be washable. I want to keep this first one small, in case it's not the great idea I think it is. Any ideas?

@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you. I hadn't thought of the pastels. Do you think finger paints would be good? Just the primaries at this point. Prang and Crayola both have washable watercolors. I can't recommend Faber Castel (I think I spelled that right) because they have a smell to them that lingers. Most importantly though is paper for the marks to go on. Start small because children have a tendency to make a few marks and then they are done with the whole sheet! I think it's something they're being subconsciously taught in school that they have to hurry up and finish the "book/tablet" because they have to move on to the next thing. At least that's how my grandniece seems to be. 🤷‍♀️

I sure would like to see some of these intriguing Chinese pigments, like the Blue Lake Source (? Was that the name?) become better known. I wonder why so many Chinese companies don’t think it’s worth it to have error-free and well-translated materials when so many Chinese students learn English well, while in college in the USA? For me, I can’t help wonder if they’re intentionally being confusing, which I think backfires into loss of trust and sales. Thanks, Lindsay, for communicating with them about the pigments. Hi, I just heard that Windsor and Newton had to change the formula on certain colors because on of the pigments is no longer available. Just wondered if you have heard anything to this effect.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 года назад +1

No, they changed pigments to save money. The pigments innthe cotman range were pretty standard. Nothing rare. They got rid of the more expensive series 2 colors to be able to price it all the same and cut costs. I see them doing the same exact thing with their professional set of 24. I bought that set in in 2017 and it had more expensive colors in it and the price us higher now. I'm not happy with winsor &newtons recent choices:
      1. Moved production of cotman paints and professional watercolor markers to China
      2. Released "artists" oil pastels, soft pastels and colored pencils that are all made in China (looks private labled with high prices and no open stock availability)
      3. Made a big deal out of "cadmium free" colors with no pigment codes.basically (in my opinion) cheaper hues to replace cadmiums but they charge as much and pat themselves in the back for being eco conscious.
This company is sadly going down hill and grabbing all the cash they can on the way down in my opinion.

Ive been looking at these on and off on Ali Express, but I do t always like buying from there as it takes for ever and I'm never sure if it is definitely the right/ real paints. I've bought some bits and most have been ok but I don't want to pay $70 for the supervision. I will wait for it to go down in price. Though they do look very nice, I think a lot of what you are paying for is the packaging.

Yes, the 2 I use the most is art is creation pigment database and handprint.com handprint is limited to watercolor pigments and it doesn't have some of the pigments that are found in cheaper Chinese paint tho and they can feature newer ones or ones used in plastics or cosmetics. Both are good to reference tho.

    Dear Lindsay,
Below, An idea, a QUESTION for you (half way down), and a short story about my first palette!
You just gave me an idea....
    Ding!
Next time you (or I) have a palette with wrapped half pans which fit well in the wooden slot, you can leave most of the paper on it!
    1) So, one could cut the top square of paper and foil, with a craft knife, revealing a square of paint (top view).
    2) keep the square piece of paper to use for your swatch journal and tape down as usual.
    3) Add some washi tape to hold paper together if it needs it underneath each pan
So, all the paper and foil around the half pan, keeps it snug!
    4) Blue tack to secure each pan into the slot. (you call it something else?)
5)My reasoning, is this, It is easier to write pigments on your swatch sheet if you need to....
than try to pack out a slot!
Packing, magnets, glues, paddlepop sticks (you call this something else too, lol) to cut and pack, self adhesive strips, takes me an hour for 24 half pans. It has turned me off timber for all the fuss, but now, I think I could do it again!
What can I say, I like them "tight like a tiger!"
    Ding!
Thanks for your video, I wouldn't have figured this out in my own practice! Also your shirt has all the colours of the Supervision. :)
    ***
    My first palette!
This idea, reminds me of my first Daler Rowney, in a black metal tin with 24 pans, from 1993, later added Cotman to it, and a few years later, W&N Professional.
(Back then, early '90s, I think the series numbers with bigger numbers, eg series 5, meant they were richly pigmented, not as they are now, just an expensive pigment, rather these numbers were the artist quality, the Cotman student grade also only had series 1 and 2. )
QUESTION : Is this statement above that what you found from your first ones?
(I could be wrong? But that is what I thought series meant then!)
I remember the first W&N violet, wow packed a punch! It was a series 4.
It had a cadmium orange and again it was like a series 5. Punchy!
Touch it, and wow colour everywhere.
I had to fold the wrappers, double, triple the paper and foils to pack the palette out so it was tight, even though it had the metal prongs, the length needs packing,
When I recently filled it, (5th time) I re-swatched another palette card, it still has the original folded wrappers as packing from all the other times, colours and brands!
The original batch codes would be on it! In the day, we had Prussian Blue, was so strong, Cadmiums, Cobalt teals, and all the general ones we have now.
I said to my Mum recently, I would send her some new Schminckes, pans and tubes, with all the original names, from this time.....Mum doesn't care about the lightfastness of older pigments, but she says to me she isn't keen on all the " 'threnes, 'thrones, 'leynes and quins' ....."
    In kindred spirit,
    Eliza

The old cotman were better. The had series one and 2. The series 2 had cobalt blue and dad reds yellows and orange as well nickle yellow. The colors were less "goopy" if that makes since. 5here are more fillers now or may be a cheaper binder. They stepped down a touch in quality with every factory move. They are not bad but not as good as they once were in my opinion.

    • @teebee9735
      @teebee9735 2 года назад +1

Glazing, in watercolor, is when you go back over dry paint with wet paint. Sometimes the dry paint will reactivate and lift and it can create mud, if you're using two different colors or it does weird stuff like get shiny. Experimentationis the key, but Lindsay helps us out by doing some of it for us! 😁

@@PaintergirlCreations - Not a problem! We all have to start somewhere. I "restarted" my watercolor journey back in 2015 / 2016 and I'm still learning new things about watercolor. It's fascinating trying to figure out what combinations of paint, paper and weather (humidity) will make! That was my hardest lesson, learning how humidity affects the way watercolor paints play, or Won't, if you're fighting to keep your paper wet long enough for them to do what they're supposed to do. So don't get frustrated, just keep researching and trying new combinations. And asking questions! 👍🏻😁👍🏻
