I actually have a 34, 15ml tube Pure Pigment set from about 6 years ago which contains all the 'new' colors you mentioned at the beginning. I added a few specialty paints (granulating and special paint from Daniel Smith) and I feel that I am good to go. Besides filling in a little here and there, I think this set is remarkable - especially for the money. Great to see you l ike them as well. Thanks for the video.
This is very helpful, thank you Lindsay. I am wondering about the lightfastness of these colors. How many are lightfast and are there any that are not? Thanks again.
Hello Lindsay, Really enjoy your tutorials & reviews on different brands of watercolour paints etc. been tossing with the idea of purchasing the 26 Mission Gold watercolours, I have heard that the colors maybe not so suitable for landscapes for paintings to look natural, would like to know your opinion on that before I go ahead with purchasing. Thank you again for all your help on your channel, always look forward to seeing all your sessions. Sylvia. 🤗
They are very saturated, but if you add a touch of a complementary color, you can neutralize them. You can mute bright colors, but you can't make muted colos vibrant, so I always recommend more saturated colors for the best options.
I really liked the cherry red color.I have it on my pallet of dry mijello gold pans. Yes too many people complain about too many reds. What Mijello should have done is have the customers customized some tubes for them.
I have the new set but I bought mine a year ago. I love love love the quin violet and cobalt green deep. I love them seperately and I love them mixed together. I also use the phthalo blue red shade way more than I use the green shade. I also like that there is a phthalo green in blue shade and yellow shade. I love this palette! I do replace the burnt sienna with DS and the ulltramarine and yellow ochre with M Graham. I have the bulletproof palette with 36 wells so I threw in some granulating colors like Schmincke potters pink and ultramarine (not the finest) some mineral violet from M Graham and lunar black from DS or mars black from Turner, both are good. I love and adore the Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment set. All the paints in my palette are juicy and kind of sticky minus the Daniel Smith but those rewet good too (not as good as M Graham, Schmincke, and Mission Gold though.)
Love love the cobalt black from mission gold it’s my favorite granulating black!! I have the 24 set but….. have thought about the 34 set as much as I love them. There are also tons of affordable open stock on Amazon also
@@thefrugalcrafter No, I looked tonight and they are High! $18 and up for one tube. And, Blick doesn't sell them anymore. I think this set might the best!
@@thefrugalcrafter most of them run between $10-20 dollars so no more than Daniel Smith ect. After doing a color mixing chart I truly realized that you don’t need much more than the 24 set. I was floored at the mixes.
Thank you for a very informative video on MG Watercolors. I'm super new to watercolor painting. I wanted help deciding what colors to put in my portable travel palette. What MG colors would you recommend for mixing?
I have wanted these for years. All those reds were too many for my taste and $80 was not in my budget. You mentioned that they changed out colors and the price dropped a few months ago. I took the plunge!

I’m really bummed I can’t get the old color set because I bought that 55 palette and wanted to make the colors. Also the colors they took out were the expensive red colors I would love to have. Tfs
Thank you for another review. When the new 24 pure pigment set initially went on sale I had to buy. It was a great deal. I love the autumn orange and cobalt green deep. I have been struggling to get the greens dialed down but Ive just began to try to teach myself more about color theory so I'm 99.99% it's me. Have a great day!
This is the set (new) I got a couple years ago. I should try them again now that I have a bit more experience. As a newbie they were so intense and didn't have enough water control.
Lindsay,. Are you going to have a watercolor month soon like you had a September pastel month? It would be nice to have art medium themed month like September. Very enjoyable.
Hahaha they had to do their weird naming, didn’t they? I’d call the two new colors in the bottom corner of your palette Cobalt Turquoise and Cobalt Turquoise Deep. So weird that they call a pure pigment a “hue.” I consider it acceptable for those colors to be made with any of the following pigments: PB 28, PB 36, and PG 50. To me Cobalt Green Deep normally means PG 26 (which I’ve totally been getting into lately, I like the Schmincke version, but many others are pretty bad.). PG 26 is a dull color and low tinting but it’s really great for landscapes, it’s nicely granulating. I do love that they included the red shade of phthalo blue, I enjoy using it and it’s often left out. I love the colors they’ve added to the line! Nickel Titinate is a great soft opaque yellow that’s lovely for portraits and it’s very lightfast. PY40 is fugitive but I’m curious to try it for sketchbook anyway. I love Quin Red after being weirded out by it at first.
These are my absolute favorite paints!! Ever !! Didn’t you say they were as good as m graham before ?? I always want to try m graham but when I heard you say that I was like, nah lol

@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks! Right now they only have the 34 set and it's a spendy proposition. I was hoping that maybe the distributor would send you one for review ;-). But I wish they'd sell a trial mixing set. It's hard to jump in on a brand new product without a little experimentation.
I don't know what it is about the Mission Gold paints I find so appealing. I think it may be the packaging; those "bougie" looking gold tubes against the dark blue in the packaging. Ugh! Makes my want monster stomp it's feet like a little toddler screaming "give me!" 🤣
Well, just a heads up. I was so excited to own some pure pigment watercolors that I ordered these immediately after this video. Sadly, they are not as expected. They are still not dry in the open palette.. on the 4th day now. They literally will run if the palette is tilted. I tried to contact MiJello and can't find a website nor a customer service number. (I'd swear there was one at one time). Luckily, Amazon refunded me.
Not necessarily. It just means they are only using one pigment in the formula so you get a more pure color. That said most if not all of these are lightfast.
Swatched these. The perm yellow light (PY154) smells really strong/bad. Chemically or almost caustic. Gave me a headache. The cobalt blue #2 (PB 28) had a lot of binder/filler and dried shiny. Overall not bad and can't wait to paint with these. Considering throwing out the perm yellow light though. Really cannot stand the smell
It's more like a very strong, burnt plastic smell. I don't know enough about different pigment and binder composition to isolate it. But does moldy paint smell like that? I found a cheaper listing (from seller: "move on" iirc?) than their $81.80 (more like $64) same product from same seller. Maybe I got the rejected pile?😂 Packaging is exactly the same though
just checked Blick and Cheap Joes, neither one has Mission Gold in any form, Jerrysartarama does have them. I'm wondering if the company is about to revamp their collection? My issue with Amazon is they continue to carry old formulations until their stock runs out (nothing wrong with this, but i'd like to be told). Some companies change their label when they undergo big changes; such as Winsor & Newton and Maimeriblu. I like the several colors of Mission Gold that i do have, and have to admit i really wanted their "mixing palette" collection they used to sell.
I've noticed that when Amazon sells a product way cheaper than the big stores clearance it. I think they can't compete. Jerrys stopped selling shinhan a while back when it started selling cheap on amazon.
I just compared a daniel smith set to mijello and could not see a difference no matter what. I will stick to these. Maybe get some aquazol for a bit more flow when i need it. Thanks !
- Received my set yesterday and now I'm wondering how best to care for them. Should I immediately put the in a palette or just keep them in the tubes and add what I need for each project to my working palette? Or is there another option. These are too expensive and precious to not take good care of them. Thanks for your help and advice.
Lindsay, I've been wanting to try color mixing classes, books (a meditation book is coming tomorrow by Lisa Solomon) and I have mission gold but NOT the pure pigments!!Don't you think these would teach me a lot and help in mixing? And, I'm afraid Amazon is going to raise the price! I'm so on the fence!! what do you think? Thank you, Jan
@@thefrugalcrafter what is a pigment clot? Thank you so much for answering me and not ignoring. Somehow I feel like I got the permission I needed to buy them. LOL I'm still confused on why there is a whole world of color mixing out there when you could just use single pigments! I don't expect an answer It's just the way my brain works I guess. You know so so so so much Lindsay! You're like a walking encyclopedia! ~ Take care
I recently tried the 36 set in these paints for the first time and I noticed after they dried they were shiny, did I do something wrong, or is it binder needing to be mixed or is this how they are supposed to be? Anyone know, and mind sharing, I have been trying to figure it out! 😊
I have found that if you have to much pigment or paint concentration on the surface of your painting it shines, I believe that it is the honey in the paint. It is just one reason why you can re-wet the paints so easily. You can always use a mat spray varnish or Dorlands wax to surface your watercolor painting. I have seen this phenomenon in other honey paints as well.
Lucky you! Here in 🇩🇪 it goes for 93€, at 3.84€ a tube. Sti a good deal, but not as great as in the 🇺🇸. I would totally buy this set, as single pigments are the way to go for me. Also, they have a whole bunch of pigments that are not so easy to find in other brands. But since I have more paint than I will ever use in my lifetime, I will probably wait for a better deal here.

I wonder if it got bacteria in it? I don't remember mine having a smell.
I thought the coballt turquoise you got that was dull was from Turner. Turner has a lovely teal
I got a dull one from QoR and a chalky one from Lukas
just checked Blick and Cheap Joes, neither one has Mission Gold in any form, Jerrysartarama does have them.
Thanks !
I think you want the synthetic ox gall for flow. Aquazol is a binder.
@@thefrugalcrafter you are right thank you !
- Received my set yesterday and now I'm wondering how best to care for them. Should I immediately put the in a palette or just keep them in the tubes and add what I need for each project to my working palette? Or is there another option. These are too expensive and precious to not take good care of them. Thanks for your help and advice.
I would fill a palette and let it dry and then use it. You won't waster paint that way. It's up to how you like to work tho.
Single pigment clots are best for mixing because they are less likely to make mud.
~ Take care
@@janc6495 a typo LOL! Color is should read
@@thefrugalcrafter LOL!!! Thought you were teaching me something new!!!
Oh I've been wanting these but they are too darn expensive in my country 😞
where do you live? I'm in the US
@@janc6495 Mexico, but even through amazon, some of the prices are high, or some things aren't deliverable to the address sometimes
What’s your favorite transparent, non granulating cool yellow of any brand?
Nickle azo yellow is a good bet
They are shiny because of the honey. They rewet great!
Ahhh thank you!😍
$134.00 now on Amazon. No new paint for me. 😁
Not to be an enabler lol, but that’s the price for the 34 set. The 24 set is still $61.80. 😊
@@heatherh78 I got the 24 set a year and a half ago.
Did you ever compare mission gold to art whale?
They are not very similar. Both are good tho.
Oh no why am I watching this ? 🥴
I am confused if I have the new or old set. ???
The new set has fewer reds and has cobalt teal and colbalt team.
@@thefrugalcrafter yes. I do have the new set then. Thanks Lindsay.
How is the 36 that comes in the palette?
I don't have that set but everyone seems to love it!
