    I love my Mijello paints. I have nearly all of their pure pigments, only missing a couple. I don’t think they are too bright at all, but I like to paint a lot of flowers as well as landscapes. Their PR122 Permanent Magenta is the best, and a fabulous mixing color for botanicals. just pay attention to the pigment numbers, ignore their naming. A lot of Asian manufacturers use the Cerulean, Viridian names for the phthalos. Also When Mijello uses a #1 or #2 in the name, the #1 is a mix, #2 is a pure pigment. The first professional palette I got was their 24 pan set, and it introduced me to PY150 and PBr25. Two colors I cannot live without. I have their PBr29, which is is very unusual. Its an almost black brown, but very dull. It reminds me of hematite. Winsor Newton did a limited edition run of that pigment they called Chromium black. My bit of Mijello PBr29 that I put on a palette over a year ago has never dried. It crawled out the other day when I didn’t have it flat. I think it might just be my tube, but be forewarned.

      I love my Mijello paints too. Especially the PBr25 Red Brown. Such a lovely color.
      I've been interested in trying the PBr29 but I'm not sure how useful I would find it.

    I bought the dot cards which have the entire Mijello range of watercolors, which you can see on my IG. Generous big dots, really love them. I really can't understand why people complain about them being too bright other than perhaps they were using Mijello watercolors in their mass tones, which perhaps isn't the best way to use these paints. Otherwise, mixed with water, I find them beautiful and vibrant without being too bright. Their colors are pleasant to look at and make me happy.

      Hi. Thank you for watching and commenting. That's great that you love the pure pigment set. What kind of things do you like to paint? Do you find the paints too bright for painting landscapes?

      @@JayNathanWatercolor i swatched them and tried mixing some colors. They are so vibrant and truly bright. I did not tested them yet for painting because I am waiting for a palette so that i can make my own palette. I think with the knowledge about color mixing or the color theory, using them in landscape or portrait can be easy by muting some colors using their complementary colors. I started landscape painting using watercolor and I am in love with this medium. I am investing for better quality paper because I am currently using fabriano (25 percent cotton). Personally, I can not even identify what i love to paint because when i started portrait painting, i love doing it more often than landscape painting. Hope you have a wonderful day!

    Thanks for the swatches! Got the 24 pure pigment set 4 years ago as my first artist-grade watercolor tubes. Not a fan of their earth tones at all, PBr25 is great though. When I want smooth and flat washes or smooth and vibrant reds I tend to use this brand :) I don't have Cobalt Black but it looks very beautiful and useful for texture and mixes.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  3 года назад +1

      The earths are definitely their weak point. I still haven't seen any explanation of why they decided to create their weird mixes for basic pigments such as burnt sienna and light red. I guess they just wanted to do something different?
      Cobalt black is very nice though I don't really use it in any paintings. I'll have to experiment more with it.

    Thanks for sharing your opinions on these. Yesterday I got the 24 15ml tubes actually 26 with the 7ml or 8ml ( can't remember) of white and black pure pigment set. I got them on a super good deal, that's really the only reason I bought them. They're single pigments, I believe they're all light fast?, and artist quality. Getting them each for $2 something per tube I just had to. I know I'd hate myself for not getting them lol. They go for over $100. I'm not sure why they went on super cheap sale but they did. Anyway, have a great day

    Nice swatching video. I enjoyed it, especially watching you swatch a few MG colors I don't have. Their "Viridian" is a pretty blah color - Daniel Smith Pthalo Green Blue Shade is gorgeous, much more vivid with more depth by comparison.
    Mission Gold Dark Burnt Sienna? I've never seen that one - I just checked on Jackson and Blick, neither list it. Where did you get it? I want some!

      I wonder if Mijello has deliberately weakened the PG7 so it more resembles viridian?
      I got the Dark Burnt Sienna here in Thailand. I think it might be one of the newer colors so maybe hasn't been stocked outside of Asia yet? I would not recommend it though unless you only plan to use it fresh from the tube each time?

      True Genuine Viridian PG18 is a low tinting, non staining granulating color- which has its benefits depending on your piece. I really like Da Vincis Viridian and M Grahams Viridian is good too:) happy painting.

    no ending questions?! what am i supposed to answer then?! lol, jk. hmm, i have like 15+ mijello colours on my to-buy list when it goes on sale next, not in a rush ;P i only have rembrandt's viridian and i don't think you'll like it. it's hard to rewet AND low-tinting; granulation isn't apparent either. seems like rembrandt is the most low-tinting compared to other brands as well.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  3 года назад

      Haha I was getting sick of hearing my own voice so I ended it before asking any questions.
      15+ colors? Are any of the ones in this video on that list?
      From your description of the Rembrandt Viridian I don't think I would like it. I don't particularly like greens from a tube anyway so if I also have to struggle with reweting it, and it being a weak mixer, it'll definitely be a no from me.

    I just love true viridian. In mixes, `cause it granulates, as well as by itself, because it`s a lovely blue green shade, not as vibrant as PG7, much less than Mijello`s PG7, I`d say ))

      @@JayNathanWatercolor it can be hard to rewet in certain brands. Roman Szmal is fairly easy, but M. Graham makes the absolute best PG18. Super vibrant, soft, and easy to rewet with subtle granulation.

    Nothing to say about PG7... I prefer Cobalt Green Deep over Viridian. But some of the Mission Gold watercolors are quite nice. If you pour the Phthalo Blue into a pan or a palette it has to sit there for over a week. It's just the formula.. it needs a lot of time to dry.

    Hey Jay! I dialed up this video cause I finally just bought my first Mission Gold. The 24 pure pigments set has been on an irresistible sale on Amazon in the US, coming out to just 2.50 a tube. And then darn Lindsay The Frugal Crafter did a nice video on the changes to the set and it put me over the edge. But what's been annoying to me is I've heard someone rave about the Indanthrone and it only comes in the larger set which is not a very good value by comparison. So I paid through the nose for it at Jacksons LOL. Also bought the Cherry red since I love PR 209 so much and the set apparently now comes with PR 207. Let's see if their PR 207 is better than Qor's - I was not much impressed.
    Interestingly, I notice that although my set won't come with the Burgundy Red, they've changed the name on that to Perelyne Maroon. Never thought I'd see the day when MG changed a paint name to something that made MORE sense. Anyway, I love my M. Graham so much I had to try these, and will feel free to paint big from the tube since they are so inexpensive!

    Whats the different between Mijello vs Holbein?

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  3 года назад +5

      Holbein is Japanese and Mijello is Korean. I personally like Holbein more than Mijello just because I prefer the colors. They have some similarities though. Both of them are highly pigmented artist grade paints. Neither of them are very active when painted wet in wet and both of them have (or had in the past) some fugitive pigments in some of their mixes.
      Holbein is more expensive (at least outside of Japan) but if they were equal price I would definitely choose Holbein.
