I bought a purple and realized I couldn’t mix it from my primary colors. It was because it was based on magenta color. This made me realize that magenta and cyan can be used to “spice up” your watercolors and make them more distinct.

*This is a current question: Aug. 19, 2024! Would love everyone's opinion on recapping the brush. Wet..or dry? In my experience from years ago, I'd recap after my brush dried, and I had difficulty with strayed hairs! lol So I'd carefully squeeze the neck and try and aim the cap in...but always found a hair or two that missed that squeezation and when I'd uncap days later...those flyaway bad boys had to be clipped. Conversely, I always thought that recapping a brush while damp..would not be a good thing? (Even though there's a hole at the end of the cap for "airing out", one would think? Help!*

I love this color!, though the three pigment blend makes it difficult for mixes without creating mud. I find the color closer to the more orange cadmium red lights (typically PR108, sometimes PR168) than to the browner earth red lights. When I want the latter I reach for Transparent Red Oxide.

When people say paints are too bright, I think what they mean is that the mijello line lacks good earth tonnes. :(

I like the fact that Cotman paints go rock hard in the pan, because I'm so messy and tend to get covered in paint with the softer honey based paints. I just prewet the paints I want to use

There's nothing wrong with more opaque if you want that--for example I find Sennelier is most transparent but I don't always want that. Lukas are a good compromise for better than student grade, but not as costly as professional grade.

Chalky ? What a nonsense idea. Its a beautiful and technically best color and is my favourite, much better than Daniel Smith. Only M. Graham can reach it. Lukas is an old company, Van Gogh already got colors from his brother in Paris , who owned a shop. He said : " The best color I ever got,is this Lukas, please send me more ". But it was difficult that time to get more. The color was made with a secret " every time wet " formula, without honey etc. . Not sticky like D.Smith !The agreement with the University Duesseldorf was to sell them for a best price. Until today Lukas are the top colors for a very good price. Miello Gold is also better than D Smith and cheaper. There is also a student line by Lukas , used also by professionals. Lukas created top colors and concentrated on best quality and not to many colors, no gimmicks ( like most D.Smith colors ) . Smith has less quality, but a higher price. People think its expensive and must be good. Thats wrong. Sennelier, the old French company has the same philosophy like Lukas .They are also better than D.Smith colors and much cheaper and have 21 not 14 ml inside. Forget al colors from USA ! They dont have the tradition and knowledge of the old German , Belgian and French companies.. US dont has a painter culture like France and Germany with their great artists until today. The only USA culture is fast food and fat people, most on drugs ! A clean culture makes clean colours. Schmincke , Lukas , Blockx and Sennelier is the right choice and not the gimmick stuff for house wives like D.Smith ( which is chalky because they perhaps mix plaster inside to make more and more money, ) the American way :)

Thanks for this video. You selected a very harmonious muted colour palette that suits the type of landscape you painted. That Phtalo Blue Yellow shade looks a lot like Prussian Blue (PB27). I recently bought the small starter set of 6x5ml and am so impressed by these paints. They are so pigmented, transparent and they mix so well. I would like to add some colours and after seeing you use that violet, I think I might have a favourite for my wishlist. Thanks again!

Thanks, Jay! This was so interesting to watch. I use an IKEA toiletries bag for my stuff. It has many compartments, elastic bands, zippers. It has a hook, which I can hang on to my tripod (adds a bitnof weight and stability) or a tree when painting outside. Very clever to switch from tape to clips. A tape roll is so big! I am trying washi tape now, which comes in smaller rolls. Thanks for the tour -it was enjoyable to have the calm background music too.

I have seen these and they are pretty pricey, but found an alternative one without the water container which is small and better. but yet again the lid flops, so the only way to use these is to have the top facing your body and the pans furthest away.

Thanks for the review. Synthetic squirrel and kolinsky sable brush lines by Princeton (Neptune and Aqua Elite) are my go to brushes. I love using Raphael SoftAqua brushes too. My recent experience with Princeton Neptune 3/4 inch wash brush was great. Holds a lot of water and comes to a sharp flat edge when wet, which allows one to paint lines and details. Does the Raphael No.40 come to a sharp flat edge when wet? I need to know this before I get it. Thanks!
