    The Holbein PB28 is my favorite. It is much less likely to granulate which I prefer. Both PB74 are so similar and I also like them. But I purchased a PB72 from Roman Szmal and I really like it too. It is called Aquarius Cobalt Blue and it is less granulating than PB74 and more green - closer to PB28.

    It would have been interesting to see Schmincke's Kobalt Blue Light PB28 in the top row. Personally, I like it. A lovely blue for sky washes and mixes well. Granulation is just about right for me, my go to mid blue. I use VG in my small sketching palette and find their Kobalt Blue Hue to be a good colour for such purposes, again for sky washes and mixing. I wouldn't put it in my studio palette though, Schmincke definitely has my vote for that. Great vid by the way, really interesting seeing the various brands swatched out like this. Never seen the PB74 swatched before, so that was really useful info. But I think I'll stick with Schmincke's FUM PB29. Granulates like a pebble beach and produces very interesting effects in mixes.

    I use Daniel Smith cobalt blue and like it for midday skies (mixed with a bit of DS ultramarine for flow. It also makes a lovely ocean color, mixed with ultramarine or cobalt turquoise. Thanks so much for these comparisons. I really like the WN version.

    I prefer Cobalt to Ultramarine so I don't typically use any Ultramarine's. I use both DS & M. Graham Cobalt which a both PB28. I love them both but the M. Graham is easier to rewet and a bit creamier to use because of the addition of honey in it.
    I love the variety of grays/blacks I can achieve but my favorite is Cobalt with Trans Red Oxide.

    I love PB74, but don`t use it as much. Schmincke`s still looks the warmest, on screen, to me.
    It depends what you use Ultramarine for, but they are not so similar, as the hue might suggest.
    Ultramarine is an organic pigment and cobalt a mineral. Both are granulating, but ultramarine is very fluid and less staining. Cobalt is a heavy pigment, more opaque, won`t spread as much and it`s harder to lift.

    I was just waiting for this comparison. ^^ A question: as you used more water in the Rembrandt's swatch and more paint in the W&N one, I wonder if and how much they differ in terms of pigmentation. I only have Van Gogh's CB and I'm considering an artist grade replacement. Those two brands, besides Maimeri Blu and White Nights, are the ones I can find where I live. Thanks for the video! 🙌

    • @JayNathanWatercolor

      Haha yes the comparison wasn't terribly scientific sorry about that 🤣 I would say the W&N is more pigmented of the two and feels much nicer to me. I like the Rembrandt one too though as it's available for much much cheaper than W&N here.

    Nice paint but …
    I guess because it’s close to an Ultramarine. Some Ultramarine blues are close enough in hue to a cobalt that with a bit of water it’ll look like a cobalt.

  • @nursen2106
    @nursen2106 2 года назад +1

    I only have one. so can't say, which one I like more. but I can say, most of the time, I don't use cobalt for skies. first of all, the real cobalts are expensive and I am still exercising a lot. I need cheaper options. and apart from mediteranian sky motives and such, the tone does not always look realistic. I mean, for middle and north-european skies - where I live and put the landscape in. the ultramarines look a bit more realistic, even if the sky is more or less an imagined sky, when I try to paint one. I can't recreate from pictues. :-) when I want to paint a very bright and let's say Indian Ocean type of skyscape I even use a more kitshy blue. I dear to use cerulean blue :-D the cobald I did use here and there in a mix, when I wanted to distinct the sea a bit more from the sky. most likely not necessary. However, I do and like to use cobalt in mountains. and there the granulation is even better. but mountains are so hard for me. so I hardly use it to be honest
