Iranian F-5s Facing MiGs and SAMs (And Who Was The Most Successful F-5 Pilot Of The War)

  • As Iraq launched the invasion of Iran in September 1980, Iranian F-5 pilots found themselves flying risky airstrikes into Iraqi airspace. Counter-air missions were given high priority and in this video, we will focus on two missions against Iraqi airbases at Kirkuk and Mosul, flown by two groups of four F-5Es each from the 2nd Tactical Fighter Base. On these missions, Iranian pilots faced MiGs and SAMs and Capt Yadollah Sharifi-Ra’ad (also spelled Sharifirad) would get a chance to prove why he would eventually become the most successful F-5 pilot of the Iran-Iraq War.

    Yet another excellent episode. The patriotism of the IRIAF officers is exemplary. They have been treated rather harshly by the government, but in the event of war, they are willing to once again risk their lives to defend their homeland. They may not like their government, but they are fighting for the nation and people of Iran, not for the regime.
    Keep up the good work, please give us more!

      @@showtime112 Agreed. For me personally, I used to believe that the IRIAF had been almost totally crippled (particularly the Phantom and Tomcat squadrons) after the Shah was deposed due to lack of technical knowledge and spares, and also due to the political purges. It wasn't until 2016 or so, when I get to read some excellent books about the IRIAF, that I realized how much more powerful they had been; which is a testament of the dedication, skills and patriotism of every pilot and mechanic of the IRIAF.

      @@showtime112 True... but remember, almost all the Iranian pilots were western trained, and that led to much of the distrust of them by their own government. One group attacked from the north and the other from the south in a quick succession. Confusing the air defense was probably the most important thing there and attacking along the runway from both sides risked a collision. I'm not absolutely sure but that's what it seems to me.

      If I remember correctly, Iraqi MiG-21s actually carried some AIM-9s purchased from Jordan. They also carried French Magics. Pakistani MiG-19s (Chinese J-6 copy) also carried AIM-9s in the 1971 War. But most importantly, Soviet R-3S (AA-2 Atoll) is a direct copy of early AIM-9. It was so direct that some sources say spares were interchangeable between the two. To sum up, those missiles in the video are not AIM-9s but R-3S. They just look the same.

      Hello! My videos are created with flight simulations, primarily DCS World. You can download and play the basic package for free here: www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/world/
      You can install Open Beta version since it gets the updated early. In the free package, you get two airplanes and two maps, others need to be bought. There's a two week free trial for all the modules and if you want' to buy any of them, wait for sales (there's one now). Then, you need to learn how to fly a certain airplane and crate missions by the game's mission editor. (find tutorials on YT) Then, you use replay track to capture video (replay tracks in DCS are a bit broken and don't always work so don't be surprised)

    Did you bomb the runway intentionally? There was nothing there but you could've targeted buildings all around.
    These bombs looked like standard 750 lb. bombs rather than anti-runway bombs so that's why I'm asking.

    • @showtime112
      @showtime112  2 года назад +1

      Hitting the buildings might not have been very useful. Hitting runways will at least put the airbase out of action for a while and deny its use in a critical moment.
