It is still a supersonic jet fighter. It may be at a disadvantage to 4th Gen aircraft, particularly because of longer range of electronics and missiles and their accuracy.....but who said all engagement will be textbook and happen beyond visual range. Supposing something goes wrong when two planes are within view of each other (for some reason) and it comes down to guns or heat seeking missiles ? These planes, with the right pilots and tactics can shoot down even an F 22 or F 35. That's the reality. Technology gives obvious advantage but it's not fool proof nor invincible.
@@morekmailman3900 True. During the Iran-Iraq war, two of these shot down an Iraqi Mig-25. They are used as the aggressor squadron to train Top Guns. Besides, Iranians are working on a single-engine version that will revive the F-20 project, which, although an excellent plane, was abandoned by the US for political reasons.

Also, the tools used to build the F-5 were also used to build the F-14, F-15 and F-16 later. Which would indicate the direction they're planning to advance in.
What is missed in this report is that Iranians are extremely careful in their weapon development beit missiles, UAVs or jet fighters. They are very detail oriented for their purposes which is full weapon production capabilities. We have seen this already in their missile and UAV technologies. So, based on history, I would not call their approach slow at all. They went through three F-5 developments to arrive at Koussar with indigenous electronics, radar, reversed engineer J-85 engine and ejection seats all domestically produced. How many countries have such a broad aerospace experience? In short, Azarakhsh, Saegheh and Koussar may not give Iran a 4++ generation jet fighter but they all gave Iran something far more valuable and that is an aerospace infrastructure for future projects. This is something that only few countries can claim to have. That is a major success in my book!
Would be interesting if they would have been capable to build ejection seats domestically to export them to Argentina for their Super Étendards, which without Martin Baker support were forced to be retired.

I agree. Whilst I may frequently disagree with the politics / actions of the Iranian Government, the Iranian people are industrious. The Iranian aerospace industry may appear somewhat primitive compared to those of more advanced economies but it certainly punches above its weight and finds novel approaches to compensate for its shortcomings. Notably, few countries have as much infrastructure for the aerospace industry in place. I hope they don't become too entangled with Russia during this period because I admire their independence. It would be a shame if Iran becomes overly dependent on a foreign aerospace industry for its more advanced hardware.
The fact that Iran was able to do this under heavy sanctions is honestly a feat on its own, many 3rd/2nd world country that have better gdp and a greater economy compare to Iran cant even achieve what Iran has done. These people are not stupid, they know that like the Mig 21, the F5 is an excellent platform for derivatives for a modern light fighter. And by the way metal is always better than shitty composites (it can be repaired, recycled etc..) composites are an environmental nightmare too.
@@MlLKMAN No sir. The laws of aerodynamics don't change. Modern jets may be fancy a d stealthy but they often sacrifice good aerodynamic caracteristics for that. And stealth is overratdd anyway especially since it is far more useful for a large country like the US or Russia that needs to cross huge distances without being detected but not so much in the case of a light fighter.
If they have a reliable source of F-5 spare parts, and needed new aircraft, they could leverage that source by making an aircraft that can use those parts to save money. They might not have a reliable source for MiG29 parts and *definitely* do not have any F-14 spares, so reverse engineering one of those would be more costly than a clean sheet indigenous fighter.....or strapping some missiles to a Dassault 50.

Iran had access to a good deal of machinery, that could be used in aerospace industry, but using this machinery to produce small number of aircraft is super expensive, without being able to export these aircrafts the project will doomed to fail
I think you hit the nail on the head. We have to consider that this is Iran so what are their needs. The F5 frame allows a country a rapid training cycle by using one aircraft for both training and tactical ops. It’s a small aircraft and by having many of them it presents a formidable opponent to any attacking force. These little F5’s have excellent maneuverability and throw in a good weapon system and it’s a,good combination. Iraq doesn’t need a long range fighter since it’s primarily for defense purposes but can flex to other roles. And as you mentioned, when parts are plentiful or cheap, it makes sense to go with what you have and modernize it along the way. I bet these are pretty straight forward to build given their age. Iran could buy some modern fighters from Russia or China or at least just buy the airframes and install their own engines, avionics and weapon systems. China is currently incapable,of building advanced jet engines which Russia knew when the Chinese bought a few new jets a few years ago, the Russians knew the Chinese would just copy them so they withheld the advanced engines and put lower powered versions in it instead.
@@echohunter4199 Yeah, Iran's needs have changed a lot. In 2000, they were surrounded by hostile Iraq and Afghanistan. Then the big "coalition of the willing" decimated them, but there was still the even bigger threat of that "coalition of the willing" going after Iran next. And also they had to worry about ISIS some. But as things dragged on, the fledgling democracy in Iraq became SURPRISE SURPRISE more friendly to Iran (this shouldn't really be surprising considering Iraq was majority Shia). So, the fact that they're now heavily armed with advanced western equipment is not as big a threat as you might imagine. Afghanistan isn't friendly, but they're a mess and Iranian F-5 copies will do just fine there. The biggest factor is that at least for now, USA enthusiasm for invading Iran is ... low. Very low. Very, very, low. And I don't just mean the Democrats, enthusiasm for restarting the Bush doctrine is basically zero all around. Heck, at this point even that dolt warhawk John Bolton wouldn't be up for it. That said, no one knows what the future will bring, and the future can happen faster than you expect or hope.
You were accurate until the Analysis portion which was mostly incorrect. As we’ve learned, Russia has been trying to sell Su 35 jets to Iran but Iran for years insisted on technology transfer as well. However, that has recently changed per recent announcements from both Iran and Russia. Also, Iran has a strategic approach similar to China’s from 30 years ago. Their timeline is longterm and the goal is self reliance. Their Air Force is for national defense only as they add defense and power projection through their ballistic and cruise missiles and UCAV programs.
A modernized F-5E is still a damn effective combat aircraft. Small, fast, light, quick, maneuverable, reliable (when built by Northrop). Built quality of Iranians is unknown. Probably the airframe should not exceed 6.5 maybe 7G.
I think these home made fighter jets are pretty cool. Most Iranians are not naïve and are well connected to the internet and they know the plane isn’t a success.

Northrop F-20 Tigershark, an F-5 variant is a 4th generation light fighter that was on par with early F-16 variant, but was cancelled because F-16 simply got more orders and out-competed the F-20 in the marketplace causing the project to be abandoned after 6 year without any buyers. It is likely that Kowsar has similar specification compared to F-20 which makes it a 4th generation fighter jet.

Simply put, it can fire the almost every armament as the F-16 such as AIM-7, AIM-9, AIM-120, AGM-65, AGM-84 and various air-to-ground ordnance such as Mark 80 series, cluster bombs etc at the fraction of the price. In fact, the Singapore air force modernized its F-5 into F-5S which uses AN/APQ-159 and can fire AIM-120. Assuming that Iran managed to reverse engineer the modernized variant of F-5E or F-5S, the capability of Kowsar is on par with early variant of F-16 block 10

Even though some of its systems are equivalent to F16 block 10, when comparing features such as takeoff weight and engine power, F5 remains far behind F16 block 10. So I wouldn't call this modernized F5 an F16 block 10. It is a lower level aircraft than F16 block10.

Negative and condescending view by the person who has made this video. Whichever way you look at it this is a huge achievement for Iran with all the illegal sanctions and restrictions placed upon it. Iran has a very successful aerospace industry today with very advanced hypersonic missiles and drones technology which very few countries possess. Criticizing is always easy to do.
I really appreciate that this channel keeps profesional tone and doesn't fall into the trend of bashing and mocking the countries that are not aligned with the Western powers. Even though Iran sponsored two terrorist attacks in my country, I don't think that trying to ridicule and minimize them is conducive to anything of use.

Iran made those jets for testing ,right now Iran signed contract with russian sukhoi company which means that iran itself will produce more russian su-30s and other advanced components of sukhois
Most assume Iran would be in a fight against the US only. So its futile to have an F5. However it is much more likely that Iran would use aircraft to fight insurgents or the Taliban. Iran could find itself in a war with the Saudis or Azeris just as much as the US, in this respect a light attack plane like the f5 is a good choice. As mentioned by many the only choice. If Iran was able to get some help from say China or Russia a modernized F20 type aircraft with J10 tech would be a great aircraft and a match for many of the regional powers. Especially in numbers.
Producing jet engines for fighters is the most difficult part of the job. producing quality avionics too. Iran cannot do these. Can clone aircraft fuselage.

When Japan "copied" aircraft, it was technology transfer with the original developers purposefully providing the technology and manufacturing infrastructure. So it wasn't "copying", it was licensed local manufacture. Their programs to develop enhanced versions was supported ... until it wasn't. Oh well. My point is, it's a completely different sort of thing. That said, I'd actually argue that reverse engineering and copying without the cooperation of the original developers is the more impressive accomplishment, even if the resulting aircraft isn't as good.
If the Iranian missile and drone programs are testimony, they should do well in intermediate term. F5 is probably a start to build the base. I remember early 80s when Iran was begging Gaddafi to get only few Russian Scuds to use as deterrent against Saddam's missile attacks on the civilians. In 40 years and despite widespread sanctions, they are better than many industrial countries in missile technology and they are allegedly export to superpower Russia! The facts to consider: -with advances in computer SCIENCE, the design and development of complex projects by smaller countries are a lot more possible than lets say 1980s. -Iranians are great in military reverse engineering. So although it is a little apple to orange, they have the EXPERINCE. -Iran has the most number of engineers in the world after China, India, USA, and Russia.The quality of graduates obviously varies, but the biased selection of them who make it to the Western graduate schools rank really high. So they have the HUMAN RESOURCE. -In the Iranian dwarfed economy, running projects is cheaper, probably 20 times cheaper. So the state still can FINANCE the defense projects. -Iran has learned to be PRACTICAL in the defense projects. Shahed Kamikaze drones are the prime example. If you need to flex muscles against smaller neighbors such as Taliban Afghanistan, you don't need to have F-35. Modified F-5s are more than enough.For the stronger neighbors such as KSA or Israel with more superior airforce, they developed drone and missile programs. When Iran destroyed Abqiq with mere 20 drones, KSA didn't dare to use airforce to respond. For standing to the USAF, Iranian rulers understand they don't stand a chance anyway, this is true even if they receive 200 Su-35 from Russia today. That is the reason they have been pursuing the nuclear program. -Dire needs dictate INNOVATION. Iranian soldiers in the battlefield and civilians in the cities were slaughtered by Saddam in 1980s. While Iran was sanctioned by almost everyone (except surprisingly Israel), Saddam was supported with money, weapons (including chemical), intelligence, propaganda, and political support by almost everyone including Europeans, Arabs, Russia, China, and even the United States. That is why despite a huge division (animosity is better word) between Iranian people and clerical government, defense projects have traditionally been an area of convergence of the two. If the entire force of a country is behind projects of this scale, there is a good chance of success.

Great presentation but unfortunately I'm not one of those million Iranians that believe Iran can compete with Western aerospace industry. Based on available Persian sources, Azarakhsh was an attempt to build a 4 gen fighter fighter jet on chassis of f5 like the f20 program in U.S with the help of Chinese aerospace firms. But the Chinese quited the program in response to sanctions that imposed on Iran's military sector in 2000s. Saeghe was the same program just like the previous one but with Russians. Russians supposed to give the mig29 engines production license to Iran for the purpose of making saeghe in masses but it never happened. Kowsar was the last attempt to make mass produced upgraded f5 with what Iran aerospace have and it never took off BC it doesn't have any economic benefits. Even back then there was the talk about buying Chinese jf-17 from chinese-pakistani firms instead of making kowsar and only god knows what happened.
JF-17 would be a huge boost for Iran but I think there's too many political obstacles. Their best bet right now are Su-35s maybe even Su-75s if things get real desperate for Russia.

The F5 is a capable Weapon in the right hands. It's better for Iran to have it's own domestically made fighters than to be totally dependent on others.

So far Russia has sold two Yak-130 trainers, that Iran had actually funded its research and a joint product between Russia and Italy. Since Iran cannot rely on Russia, it has developed a 100% Iranian subsonic jet called Yasin. The are also in discussions with Pakistanis to coproduce cheap Chinese fighters which traditional have half of the life of Western and Russian planes as neither Russia nor West has helped Chinese in their composite and metallurgy used in the engines. Russians typically only provide part of the answers to Chinese to keep them dependent on Russia.

The Iranians are amazing people. They have some of the best exerts and engineers in the region and are able to reverse engineer many western components and airframes.

manned fighter jets are overpriced and ineffective. the future is UAVs. for the cost of a single F35, Iran or any country for that matter can deploy hundreds or even thousands of UAVs. what the Russians have done to Ukraine using Iranian UAVs are proof positive of the concept. I'm not a fan of the islamic republic by any stretch of the imagination, but even if there was a rapprochement with the United States, Iran would be wise to maintain its current course vis-a-vis domestic arms production.

You made some pretty stupid statements in this video. For example "Iran's population is not military or aviation enthusiast"? You really have no clue about Persian history. We invented the concept of military when Western Europe was living in jungles. You have no idea what Xerexes and Darius the king of Persia have contributed to military strategy. Iran makes some of the best drones in the world. In 30 years, Iran will also maje some of the best air craft.
Kowsar is a 4th generation fighter jet (F-5 is not). What the Iranians are doing is to pave the way for manufacturing more advanced aircrafts in the near future. The same thing was done with their missile and drone programs.
Iran has a much smaller defense budget than other countries, and one of the reasons for Iran's desire is its cheapness and quick repairs, Iran is under the most severe sanctions, and there is no one who can help, even its partners, namely Russia and China... Iranian F5 fighters are mostly a research project aimed at improving the knowledge of fighter construction. If Iran can achieve full knowledge of fighter design and construction, probably if it wants to build a fighter, the basis of its design will certainly be the F5 fighter.

Their production of F-5 Tiger II parts is very likely in entirety used for maintenance of F-5 still in service and it is possible that some aircraft of U.S. produced F-5 Tiger II were converted to Kowsar standard. Another is priority which anything else has greater priority since it is most efficient way to challenge opposing forces as achieving air superiority even in domestic airspace would be rather tall order.
Iran will be joing the BRICS nations in time and be considered an equal with some other 80 nations to join hopefully peace will come to the global populations and defending borders won't be necessary. I flew the F-5 back in the day. Trust me, with upgraded modern avionics and weapon systems and an experienced pilot, you do not want to mess with it.
We still use them in Tunisia for maritime patrol, and they are good enough so as the saying goes, never change a winning team.
It is still a supersonic jet fighter. It may be at a disadvantage to 4th Gen aircraft, particularly because of longer range of electronics and missiles and their accuracy.....but who said all engagement will be textbook and happen beyond visual range. Supposing something goes wrong when two planes are within view of each other (for some reason) and it comes down to guns or heat seeking missiles ? These planes, with the right pilots and tactics can shoot down even an F 22 or F 35.
That's the reality. Technology gives obvious advantage but it's not fool proof nor invincible.

True. During the Iran-Iraq war, two of these shot down an Iraqi Mig-25. They are used as the aggressor squadron to train Top Guns. Besides, Iranians are working on a single-engine version that will revive the F-20 project, which, although an excellent plane, was abandoned by the US for political reasons.

great information the F-5 as they said was made in the 1950's which means no crazy (or few) alloys, simple and basic metal design, NO carbon fiber, systems that were designed as repairable and easy maintenance. NOTHING about todays modern jets are any of those things. The F-5 is the perfect beginner if you have no advanced avionics or infrastructure capable of wind tunnel and CADing systems with advanced computers.
It's a great design, too. If the F20 tigershark was picked over the F16 it would likely still be fighting today
F 5 is a very time proven design as it's design elements can still be seen in F 18C Hornet and F 18 E/F Superhornet
Also, the tools used to build the F-5 were also used to build the F-14, F-15 and F-16 later. Which would indicate the direction they're planning to advance in.
Not to mention the F-5's DNA in the current KAI T50, HAL TEJAS MKI & JAS39 GRIPEN

What is missed in this report is that Iranians are extremely careful in their weapon development beit missiles, UAVs or jet fighters. They are very detail oriented for their purposes which is full weapon production capabilities. We have seen this already in their missile and UAV technologies.
So, based on history, I would not call their approach slow at all. They went through three F-5 developments to arrive at Koussar with indigenous electronics, radar, reversed engineer J-85 engine and ejection seats all domestically produced. How many countries have such a broad aerospace experience?
In short, Azarakhsh, Saegheh and Koussar may not give Iran a 4++ generation jet fighter but they all gave Iran something far more valuable and that is an aerospace infrastructure for future projects. This is something that only few countries can claim to have. That is a major success in my book!

I agree. Whilst I may frequently disagree with the politics / actions of the Iranian Government, the Iranian people are industrious.
The Iranian aerospace industry may appear somewhat primitive compared to those of more advanced economies but it certainly punches above its weight and finds novel approaches to compensate for its shortcomings. Notably, few countries have as much infrastructure for the aerospace industry in place.
I hope they don't become too entangled with Russia during this period because I admire their independence. It would be a shame if Iran becomes overly dependent on a foreign aerospace industry for its more advanced hardware.

The ballistic missile that could go long range had a problem of its own known as "REENTRY PLASMA EFFECTS" which happens When slamming air particles into each other as fast as a reentering object does, the extreme heat from all this friction raises the temperature of the air so high that the gas becomes ionized, forming essentially a cloud of plasma around the outer surface of the craft in the reentry phase that interrupt the radio communications between a vehicle and ground station.
In simple terms, you can't guide it. Therefore, long-range ballistics are only used for nukes that lack of accuracy isn't an issue.
So obviously, when Iran announced that they somehow developed ballistic missiles with pinpoint accuracy, everyone dismissed it as propaganda. Even after Iran released the footage of a ballistic missile hitting the target with pinpoint accuracy,. Iran was accused of Photoshopping, despite the lack of any evidence to suggest the footage was altered. But after the attack on the US air base that all missiles achieved bullseye, everyone had to accept the fact that, just like the Persians were the only ones with Damascus steel technology, now they repeated similar unachievable technology. Uzi Robbin, the father of Israel's missile defense, said this in reaction to Iran's pinpoint ballistic missile . "By pushing a button, they were able to accomplish a task that we need to risk the lives of pilots and costly fighter jets to do the same. and they probably were under air conditions when they pushing the button"

These people are not stupid, they know that like the Mig 21, the F5 is an excellent platform for derivatives for a modern light fighter. And by the way metal is always better than shitty composites (it can be repaired, recycled etc..) composites are an environmental nightmare too.

@@MlLKMAN No sir. The laws of aerodynamics don't change. Modern jets may be fancy a d stealthy but they often sacrifice good aerodynamic caracteristics for that. And stealth is overratdd anyway especially since it is far more useful for a large country like the US or Russia that needs to cross huge distances without being detected but not so much in the case of a light fighter.

If they have a reliable source of F-5 spare parts, and needed new aircraft, they could leverage that source by making an aircraft that can use those parts to save money. They might not have a reliable source for MiG29 parts and *definitely* do not have any F-14 spares, so reverse engineering one of those would be more costly than a clean sheet indigenous fighter.....or strapping some missiles to a Dassault 50.

you ask a fare question, however the F-5 as they said was made in the 1950's which means no crazy (or few) alloys, simple and basic metal design, NO carbon fiber, systems that were designed as repairable and easy maintenance. NOTHING about todays modern jets are any of those things. The F-5 is the perfect beginner if you have no advanced avionics or infrastructure capable of wind tunnel and CADing systems with advanced computers.
Iran had access to a good deal of machinery, that could be used in aerospace industry, but using this machinery to produce small number of aircraft is super expensive, without being able to export these aircrafts the project will doomed to fail
I think you hit the nail on the head. We have to consider that this is Iran so what are their needs. The F5 frame allows a country a rapid training cycle by using one aircraft for both training and tactical ops. It’s a small aircraft and by having many of them it presents a formidable opponent to any attacking force. These little F5’s have excellent maneuverability and throw in a good weapon system and it’s a,good combination. Iraq doesn’t need a long range fighter since it’s primarily for defense purposes but can flex to other roles. And as you mentioned, when parts are plentiful or cheap, it makes sense to go with what you have and modernize it along the way. I bet these are pretty straight forward to build given their age. Iran could buy some modern fighters from Russia or China or at least just buy the airframes and install their own engines, avionics and weapon systems. China is currently incapable,of building advanced jet engines which Russia knew when the Chinese bought a few new jets a few years ago, the Russians knew the Chinese would just copy them so they withheld the advanced engines and put lower powered versions in it instead.
@@echohunter4199 Yeah, Iran's needs have changed a lot. In 2000, they were surrounded by hostile Iraq and Afghanistan. Then the big "coalition of the willing" decimated them, but there was still the even bigger threat of that "coalition of the willing" going after Iran next. And also they had to worry about ISIS some.
But as things dragged on, the fledgling democracy in Iraq became SURPRISE SURPRISE more friendly to Iran (this shouldn't really be surprising considering Iraq was majority Shia). So, the fact that they're now heavily armed with advanced western equipment is not as big a threat as you might imagine. Afghanistan isn't friendly, but they're a mess and Iranian F-5 copies will do just fine there.
The biggest factor is that at least for now, USA enthusiasm for invading Iran is ... low. Very low. Very, very, low. And I don't just mean the Democrats, enthusiasm for restarting the Bush doctrine is basically zero all around. Heck, at this point even that dolt warhawk John Bolton wouldn't be up for it.

You were accurate until the Analysis portion which was mostly incorrect. As we’ve learned, Russia has been trying to sell Su 35 jets to Iran but Iran for years insisted on technology transfer as well. However, that has recently changed per recent announcements from both Iran and Russia.
Also, Iran has a strategic approach similar to China’s from 30 years ago. Their timeline is longterm and the goal is self reliance. Their Air Force is for national defense only as they add defense and power projection through their ballistic and cruise missiles and UCAV programs.
A modernized F-5E is still a damn effective combat aircraft. Small, fast, light, quick, maneuverable, reliable (when built by Northrop). Built quality of Iranians is unknown. Probably the airframe should not exceed 6.5 maybe 7G.

Northrop F-20 Tigershark, an F-5 variant is a 4th generation light fighter that was on par with early F-16 variant, but was cancelled because F-16 simply got more orders and out-competed the F-20 in the marketplace causing the project to be abandoned after 6 year without any buyers. It is likely that Kowsar has similar specification compared to F-20 which makes it a 4th generation fighter jet.

Even though some of its systems are equivalent to F16 block 10, when comparing features such as takeoff weight and engine power, F5 remains far behind F16 block 10. So I wouldn't call this modernized F5 an F16 block 10. It is a lower level aircraft than F16 block10.

Most assume Iran would be in a fight against the US only. So its futile to have an F5. However it is much more likely that Iran would use aircraft to fight insurgents or the Taliban. Iran could find itself in a war with the Saudis or Azeris just as much as the US, in this respect a light attack plane like the f5 is a good choice. As mentioned by many the only choice. If Iran was able to get some help from say China or Russia a modernized F20 type aircraft with J10 tech would be a great aircraft and a match for many of the regional powers. Especially in numbers.

don't worry they will get Su 35S soon, it's of course much better than any Iranian current fighter jet.
When Japan "copied" aircraft, it was technology transfer with the original developers purposefully providing the technology and manufacturing infrastructure. So it wasn't "copying", it was licensed local manufacture. Their programs to develop enhanced versions was supported ... until it wasn't. Oh well.
My point is, it's a completely different sort of thing.
That said, I'd actually argue that reverse engineering and copying without the cooperation of the original developers is the more impressive accomplishment, even if the resulting aircraft isn't as good.
If the Iranian missile and drone programs are testimony, they should do well in intermediate term. F5 is probably a start to build the base. I remember early 80s when Iran was begging Gaddafi to get only few Russian Scuds to use as deterrent against Saddam's missile attacks on the civilians. In 40 years and despite widespread sanctions, they are better than many industrial countries in missile technology and they are allegedly export to superpower Russia!
The facts to consider:
-with advances in computer SCIENCE, the design and development of complex projects by smaller countries are a lot more possible than lets say 1980s.
-Iranians are great in military reverse engineering. So although it is a little apple to orange, they have the EXPERINCE.
-Iran has the most number of engineers in the world after China, India, USA, and Russia.The quality of graduates obviously varies, but the biased selection of them who make it to the Western graduate schools rank really high. So they have the HUMAN RESOURCE.
-In the Iranian dwarfed economy, running projects is cheaper, probably 20 times cheaper. So the state still can FINANCE the defense projects.
-Iran has learned to be PRACTICAL in the defense projects. Shahed Kamikaze drones are the prime example. If you need to flex muscles against smaller neighbors such as Taliban Afghanistan, you don't need to have F-35. Modified F-5s are more than enough.For the stronger neighbors such as KSA or Israel with more superior airforce, they developed drone and missile programs. When Iran destroyed Abqiq with mere 20 drones, KSA didn't dare to use airforce to respond. For standing to the USAF, Iranian rulers understand they don't stand a chance anyway, this is true even if they receive 200 Su-35 from Russia today. That is the reason they have been pursuing the nuclear program.
-Dire needs dictate INNOVATION. Iranian soldiers in the battlefield and civilians in the cities were slaughtered by Saddam in 1980s. While Iran was sanctioned by almost everyone (except surprisingly Israel), Saddam was supported with money, weapons (including chemical), intelligence, propaganda, and political support by almost everyone including Europeans, Arabs, Russia, China, and even the United States. That is why despite a huge division (animosity is better word) between Iranian people and clerical government, defense projects have traditionally been an area of convergence of the two. If the entire force of a country is behind projects of this scale, there is a good chance of success.
I believe it’s great to say when the country like Iran with more then 40 years of sanctions is the top 5 countries in missile technology and nano technology and unmanned aerial crafts and even sending satellites to orbit also a fourth country in the world to make a super sonic missile is going to be very fast one the best at making fighter jets as they already made the cargo plane named it Simorgh this year and they also making all those jet engines themselves domestically in side country one hundred percent so I do believe they will fill this gap very quickly in a few years… it’s not important where they are now it’s amazing how they are trying so hard and that’s how the west got to this point as the US general Mackenzie said it Iranian pasted us in unmanned aircraft technology and we no longer holding the flag in this department …😊

If you say Kowsar uses Grifo radar, then its closest analogue could be the F-5S/T upgraded by ST Aerospace for Republic of Singapore Air Force...

Great presentation but unfortunately I'm not one of those million Iranians that believe Iran can compete with Western aerospace industry. Based on available Persian sources, Azarakhsh was an attempt to build a 4 gen fighter fighter jet on chassis of f5 like the f20 program in U.S with the help of Chinese aerospace firms. But the Chinese quited the program in response to sanctions that imposed on Iran's military sector in 2000s. Saeghe was the same program just like the previous one but with Russians. Russians supposed to give the mig29 engines production license to Iran for the purpose of making saeghe in masses but it never happened. Kowsar was the last attempt to make mass produced upgraded f5 with what Iran aerospace have and it never took off BC it doesn't have any economic benefits. Even back then there was the talk about buying Chinese jf-17 from chinese-pakistani firms instead of making kowsar and only god knows what happened.
JF-17 would be a huge boost for Iran but I think there's too many political obstacles. Their best bet right now are Su-35s maybe even Su-75s if things get real desperate for Russia.

Pakistan built JF17 with China. Türkiye produced the fuselage and many parts of the F35. Additionally, Türkiye produces engine parts for General Electric. In addition, Türkiye also produces its own Jet engines. Unlike Qaher F313, Turkey's domestic aircraft TFX Kaan is a real plane that can fly. It will make its first flight in about 30 days. It is clear that Turkey is technologically far ahead of Iran. Iran, on the other hand, acquired ballistic missile technology from North Korea. This is lower technology than building airplanes.

Their production of F-5 Tiger II parts is very likely in entirety used for maintenance of F-5 still in service and it is possible that some aircraft of U.S. produced F-5 Tiger II were converted to Kowsar standard.
Another is priority which anything else has greater priority since it is most efficient way to challenge opposing forces as achieving air superiority even in domestic airspace would be rather tall order.
