.458 SOCOM, Radical Firearms MHR, Feeding issue and Overview

  • Last Night I picked-up a Radical Firearms 16" MHR complete upper in 458 SOCOM. As soon as I got home I had issues with it. The rounds are not feeding properly. The projo is making it past the locking lugs but the shoulder and projo nose are impacting the top of the chamber and the 6 O'clock locking lug almost simultaneously. I am open to any suggestions! I am going to start with COAL, Magazine, and letting the guys at Arctic Ammo off the Palmer-Wasilla to take a look at it!

    My 458 had the same issues. Not taking credit of this, I saw the video on RUclips. For Pmags, take a 1/2” drill bit, wrap it in 200 grit sand paper, sand the front part of the lips of the mag just slightly. It raises the angle of the round in the mag so it aligns into the chamber. Metal GI mags are easier. Bend the rear lips to an opening of .500”. Then bend front lips to an opening of .515”. Easier than sanding Pmags and works perfectly...

    Saw your video and I was having the exact same issue you’re having. I bought a new “bolt only” from TROMIX for $110.00 and it completely fixed this issue without any modifications whatsoever to the feed ramp, barrel or mags. It’s works great, problem solved. Worth the money to fix the problem.

      Michael Kaylor You’re welcome sir. I hope that is the only problem you’re having too. The bolt looks EXACTLY the same but I am not sure what the heck makes it work properly. I don’t see a single difference between them but the new bolt does work and the old bolt does not. Honestly I really don’t care as long as it feeds correctly now. I just wish I had knew of this before I spent a whole lot of money on my Upper.

    I've built many of them. It's not a mag or ammo issue. The feeding ramp on the barrel needs to be widened and polished with a dremel with a barrel sander attached to it.

      This is the right answer. After running underwood I found the case necking was too wide. Little dremel and polish at feeding ramp and solved

    Had the same upper, with the same issues. I ended up putting and extra power spring in the buffer tube and used the lancer 458 socom mags.also went online to tromix and bought the 458 socom follower for the mag. Also kind of buffed the feed ramps. It helped, but still had feed issues on the last shell. Would stovepipe everytime. Found that the flat nose hollow point ,wouldn’t cycle much at all but the ballistic tip from underwood ammo would a bit better. After all that, I Just couldn’t rely on the radical firearms upper to function properly.. was so excited to get it, then so disappointed when I did. So I sold it and bought a rock river arms beast upper. Have had not one single malfunction since.

    if the mag doesnt present the round correctly when its in line to chamber itll cause issues, PMAGs are good for 556 but kinda suck when used for other rounds, i had similar issues with 300 blkout

    bought a bca 458 upper and just got down making 20rds. They chamber and eject fine one at a time. Problem is when i hand cycle with more than 1 in the mag, the 2nd round starts to come up to the chamber without the the bolt ejecting the first one out so a jam occurs. Im using lancer mags that have 458 printed on it but they are definitely 556 mags because of the etching on the mid section and the follower matching. I can fit 11 458 rds in this mag btw. I'll tinker with this upper tomorrow as this issue has already given me a headache

      Risky Business so the first round is still on the bolt face when the second round attempts to feed?

  • @nelsonson1
    @nelsonson1 6 лет назад

    It's the soft lead tip on the projectile. Provided that the feed ramp is singular and continuous from upper to lower receiver.

    I had the same problem with my 458 SOCOM upper I picked up off GunBroker. I modified the mags and that help a little but I could not load more than 3 rounds without it jamming and damaging the brass just like yours. I finally talked with a guy that told me about Tromix they make big bore rifles. I finally gave up and ordered a new barrel from them. I installed the barrel (has a great feed ramp) and then I could get 4 rounds to cycle most of the time. I was underwhelmed. I finally went to their site and was reading their FAQ page and there is told me most problems with feeding are because of the bolt. Well thay had given me a bolt with the new barrel but I put in in the spare parts drawer because I had purchased the entire Bolt Carrier from Brownels. I thought they were nuts but I tried changing the bolt (why not I already had it) and ALL my problems went away. It has never jammed since. I even tried some un modified mags I had and it worked with them as well and I can load 10 rounds with no problems. Their bolts are expensive and I do not have anything to do with them but if you still have not gotten it figured out give them a try. Here is a video I did about my experience with a little more information. gunstreamer.com/watch/458-socom-chambering-problems-2-0-fixed_yqrKWYoHDOHJJbg.html

    Sounds like you need a better receiver and barrel. My son just built an upper. Faxon carrier, bolt, and barrel, Spikes upper. Shot two rounds the other night. Both would not fit out the ejection port He milled .100 " off of the top of the port and .030" off of the bottom. Functioned fine tonight.

    I have read blogs about related issues.feeding lips on standard mags do not have enough opening.thats why you get dents in your brass.whats worse is it is potentially life and death issue.look for spec mags with milled off lips.Ar mags were never designed for single stack use although 50 beawolf don't seem to suffer from same problem

    bought a Radical barrel and bolt for 458 , had the same issue . sent barrel back to them they said they honed the chamber .then they sent me 2 mags . I noticed a enlarged cut in front of follower ( to clear round diameter ) also the lips of the mag have a more aggressive cut so the round moves upward sooner . did this to some older usgi mags now have no issues feeding .as for your brass , just shoot it will fire form to the chamber .

      I put the Tromix bolt in and and did a feed ramp polish and a BCG polish job and it definitely helped but I’m still having a few hiccups with the bolt missing rounds or double feeding. I decided to take it one step farther and bought the red springco buffer spring, new mag springs and an h3 buffer. I also bought the single stack Tromix mag followers for the lancer and gi mags. I also took a dremel tool to the front of the lancer mags and half mooned it down about a 1/4” so the neck of the round clears the mag and doesn’t hang up. I figure with some stiffer springs and maybe a little heavier buffer it might slow the BCG down a tad and solve some of the issues. If this doesn’t work then who’s knows what else could be done. I haven’t received all the new parts but I should have it all by Saturday so as soon as I can get all this stuff in I’ll let you know. Pretty ridiculous having to spend an extra $250 just to get this thing working right.

    I have deduced that with mine I was having the same issues with a hex mag and a metal generic .458 socom mag and It all has to do with the front part of the feeding lips being to narrow for proper feeding placement. You have to either bend on metal mags with pliers or sand down on hex mags

    • @michaelkaylor6770

  • @Berserker71r
    @Berserker71r 6 лет назад +1

    The brass isn't ruined you can take a file and smooth it out. The most important thing is that you should bevel the front of the magazine so the neck of the brass doesn't hang up. Using polymer lipped magazines like pmags will also provide less friction since the round is in contact with both of them. Also those flat noses can jam on the locking lugs so if you want 100 percent reliability switch to a spitzer style.

    • @Berserker71r
      @Berserker71r 6 лет назад +1

      I almost forgot, make sure they put the right feed ramp in. It should be machined down so there is just one big ramp in the middle.

I will try to get you guys a better look tonight!

    pmags don't work well in the socom. The pressure that the 458 rounds put on the polymer feed lips makes them open up (the more 458 rounds you put in the mag). Try using metal mags or the lancer mags.

My brother has a .50 beo upper or 12.7 has the same problem. After removing the bottom lug it feeds fine even with a stock pmag. I am having the same problem, other than wasting my time with figuring out how to make a $1600 weapon work I am just going to go 7.62. This was a waste of my money and time. Absolutely ridiculous. Anyone who needs a .458 socom upper. Mine is for sale! It has a Fail Zero bolt.

      Don’t give up. 458 SOCOM is a badass gun. Just work out a few bugs every gun is different. It’s kind of expected when building a gun yourself, especially when a gun is designed for 5.56 and you chamber it in another caliber. Anything you do out of mil-spec, you’ll have to do some fine tuning to get your gun to run the way you want it to. Worst comes to worst take it to a gun Smith and they will work out the bugs for you. Just don’t give up if you’ve already spent 1800 dollars what’s 200 dollars more to have the gun you want.

    Yeah i won't buy the radical, too many bad reviews... Most people have to sand down the m4 feed ramps left in there...

      Now Ya Tell Me, Ha Ha Ha! I am thinking that I have to do something similar or I will return it to either the store or Radical and see what happens!

      This is exactly what I had to do with my Radical Firearms 10.5 inch 458S upper. It added another $175 to the total cost of the weapon, making the bargain price savings not worth it.

      Jason Craun I found a good mag, a big-bore relieved magazine did it for me and the website says they ship with a magazine now, though they do not what promoted them to start sending mags!

    “It is a 5.56 follower though” you literally address half the problem. Quit being cheap and buy the right follower

      I am going to try and slow-mo a bolt cycle to see if I get any bolt bounce or other oddity before spending the money. Thank is a possible solution though and in my wheel house as a fix. Thanks for the advise.

      Michael Kaylor dude they’re like $10 shipped. If you really want it as a bear gun you don’t want it to jam. Is your life really worth saving $20. Don’t be dumb my friend good luck this season

      Willlerd I have purchased a magazine with the appropriate trimmings and follower, it worked flawlessly! Also, after checking the Radical website, the uppers now ship with a magazine but since mine was sitting on the shelf for a bit it was before they started being part of the package. Thanks for the nudge!

      @@vincenthamilton4593 I suspect you have ensured the Aero lower does function with other uppers, 5.56, 6.5 Grendel or the 6.8 offerings? if that is he case have you found what the issue was for the Radical upper? Any help I can get with it is needed!
