We used a bolt action rifle in .222 to shoot groundhogs on the farm. So never really impressed me. It sure was fast though. When hunting varmints you want a fast round.

458 socom is more powerful especially when hand loaded because their is a greater offering of bullet weights. Out of the big 3 big bore AR 15 rounds 458 is the most picked for hand loaders

.458 SOCOM conceptually was a reaction to the inability to penetrate cinder block in operation Gothic Serpent, Mogadishu. The beauty of the round is that one can utilize the same lower with a .458 SOCOM upper, as well as the .450 Bushmaster and the .50 Beowulf uppers. I put together this setup in a rifle range bag, all suppressed - AR15 lower with the .458 SOCOM upper installed and the .450 Bush upper and .50 Beo upper strapped in next to it. A few pins and the shooter can jump around between these three cartridges in an AR platform. Trust me - very cool.

make your own brass and reload. The 458 is intended for and really only useful for, suppressed use. Since that means sub 1000 fps ammo, , you can use cast bullets in it. So there's no reason for you to have to pay more than about 20c to shoot it.

Ahmed khayr would require a custom built variant which is possible and can indeed be done by a gunsmith easily. And be cheap most likely at that

Otium Borealis the 450 bushmaster is close but for reloading the .458 size bullet is common in rifle rounds like 45-70 458 lott 458 win mag but the 450 bushmaster uses .452 bullets which are mainly pistol bullets

@@tretip9093 - Are you even bothering to try and speak english? Also you are wrong about 458 vs .50 S&W. The 500 S&W is exactly .042" larger than the 458 - they are both CALIBERS meaning - they are units of inches.
Also the 380 & 9 have same diameter and a 38 is only slightly bigger by about .004-.005" larger.
I love my .458. I keep it around for when a 5.56, 300 blk, 7.62X39, just isnt enough.

You should partner up with Grant Thompson +TheKingOfRandom and pressurize some bottles and shoot them. Or a small amount of dry ice in the bottle to increase the pressure in the bottle.
You could also stand the bottles on the cap, shoot the cap and get them to launch.

When I shoot I just stop at the dollar store an buy a $4 box of cold packs.. Mix the ammonium nitrate with a table spoon of aluminum powder fill a small plastic bottle full.. An shoot.. Way better than a pressure vessel. :)

I know you probably won't see this but the 458 Socom is my favorite cartridge. Tony over at tromix one of the original inventors of this cartridge is a buddy of mine and I built a very nice 458 Socom setup. Very accurate rifle and I'm pushing a 300 grain Barnes bullet with a blue ballistic tip 2 / 2200 feet per second generating over 2000 foot-pounds of energy. Cool video brother keep up the good work.
My .300 mag with a 200 grain has over a ton of energy at 500 yds !
