Note: The California heat (it was 98 degrees on the mountain that day) melted one of my GoPro's from the inside out, and so this video will look and feel a little different as we worked around it. You still get the full picture of the new Mustang. - MF
The "all-new" 2024 Mustang may only be "mostly new" but with a new exterior, heavily revised interior, and upgraded powertrain, it's got the goods. The 5.0L rev-happy V8 now makes 486HP with the optional Performance Pack's active exhaust, the exterior's creased, aggressive details look better in the flesh than in photos, and the interior is comfortable and modern, with whimsical throwback touches like the Fox Body gauge cluster, and fun gadgets like the drift-ready brake lever and line lock. In this first drive, we hit the canyons in a GT/PP with the 6-speed manual to see if Ford nailed the new Mustang's mission.
Ford provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of gas for this review.

The New 2024 Mustang GT Proves Ford Understands the Assignment - TheSmokingTire
#2024MustangGT
#MustangGTreview
I watch the smoking tire because i actually learn what a car is like without all the overwhelming editing. Thanks!
Exactly, finally somebody else has said it. All reviews are the same, and I love TST for getting straight to the point.
Matt and Zach are some of the best in the business
That’s a good point, I’ve never thought of that detail. It is indeed refreshing
They also have a much better perspective of how these new cars compare to older cars and modified cars
Agreed. It’s just right blend of editing, details, factual information and opinion based on many many years of experience.
Thank you for always covering the weight difference between trims and options. That kind of detail is often glossed over by others.
Cmon man you just need a couple mods!💪🏼💯
I mean the weight difference doesn't matter once mat sits inside 😂
@TheSmokingTire This is EXACTLY the type of video I love to watch from you guys. No music and no special cinematography. Just commentary on the car, great shots of the car doing what it does and awesome engine sounds. Love it! KEEP THIS STYLE.... or do what you will. It's your channel and you know what's best, but this is what I loved about all the old style One-Takes!
Matt has the experience and attention to detail when driving to be able to deliver this type of report with excellence.
I agree this was great format and I prefer Matt only reviews.
That's the funny part, the higher production pieces are the old style and the one takes were very much the newer style
I really didn't mind this style. Hearing you and Zack talk about the car is what I'm here for anyways. Glad to hear the shifter is improved.
Fun fact, I discovered TST at least 10 years ago watching a video on a Mustang and here I am again for a Mustang video. Thanks for the great content guys. 😎
I just like it when you can tell that the car review actually knows what the hell he is talking about and isn’t just reading a spec sheet like 99% of RUclips reviewers. TST, TheTopher, SavageGeese, Motoman, and Grassroots Motorsports are good examples of people who actually know their way around cars and don’t need to bore people with reading spec sheets.
Like the clip of Matt walking down the road 😂
I was like... "Wow they really needed filler for this video" LOL
He had to include a little bit of what its like to own a Ford... I kid, I kid, low hanging fruit I know 🤣
Hate the iPads on the dash. Wave of the future! Fine, then keep it in the future.
All just so the manufacturers can save some money.
@@Luprupsad but true
Its interesting how seeing matt sitting in the car makes the change in microphone from in studio to in car less abrupt
Very great point about the “view across the hood feeling pedestrian”. It’s important we feel like we’re in something special looking down the hood. I felt like the 2015-2018 transition did this too because you could no longer see the extractors on the 18.
Agree. I have a 2017 GT. I can remember one of the first things I thought getting in the car to test it was the way the view was looking out over the hood. Really made an impression on me
The 18 front end redesign was a big flop. You know it’s bad when Ford starts with 15-17 styling as basis for the ultimate (and most attractive) S550 - the 2020 GT500.
Why did they have to make the dashboard look like it's a generic non-car screen fitted into the car last moment when the supplier of actual Mustang dashboard had a fire at the factory?
This is my only real issue with it. The dash screen are horrible
The trifecta has been watched. Throttle house smoking tire and straight pipes. You all cover your personal opinions on the car and as an experienced hand I trust your reviews as a sort of "yeah it's got power but how is it really to live with" angle. I'm glad to see it is indeed a mustang still.
I just ordered a gt premium. The dark red with tinted clear coat, 301a package, 10 speed, valved exhaust, 3.55 rear end.
my Foxbody never had 160 on the dash lol. But that 85 got buried every single time!
Speak for yourself, mine had the 2.3L. 😂😭
Finally a new car that still has NA V8 and amazing sound! Much respect to Ford for keeping the Mustang formula. I took delivery of my Mach 1 earlier this year as I prefer the styling of the S550 but Dark Horse will be cool also.
Ford Mustang with a V8 engine is like a fireworks show on the Fourth of July, it's a display of power and spectacle that leaves everyone amazed! 🎆🚗💥
I think to be a 480hp daily driver, this is the move. I have a 2020 and it’s perfect as a daily, not aggressive enough to be a dedicated weekend car
Yes, because middle aged men need 480hp cars to sit in commuter traffic.
yeah buts its a rustang eww! porsche or nothing
@@truantray That used to be the corvette. Has the mustang moved up to midlife crisis car?
@@jeffk464 the price sure did
Pitty they didn't round it of to 500hp out of the box ,
Thanks Matt you are my favorite American car reviewer no hype just chill and informative 😊
That coyote sounds fantastic..👍
Matt is a lot more forgiving than he used to be and sympathetic to the challenges of building cars that people will buy. I prefer the critic but if you really listen you know what is good and bad
FYI .. as of 2022, the MT-82 is outsourced from Mexico (same as the TREMECs), instead of China. So all 2022 Mustang MT-82s and newer are really, really good
its listed as mt-82 D4, which has been around since 2018 s550. SO u think its something magical made in Mexico vs China? Or is there any real changes besides place of build? Better quality is only gut check idea?
@@joshcapecod6098 TREMEC transmissions are also outsourced to Mexico, not China. The +22' MT-82D4s are buttery smooth and accurate. No clunking or grinding when shifting at any point of the RPM band. Make your own decision, I'm not here to convince you. Peace out.
@@ClickbaitMotorsports all good - i am just very curious. if Ford says they are identical and from what we know that is so....including linkage...then to your point the only deductive reason left is Mexico plant has better manufacturing than China. we will probably never know what that 'means'. Is it tighter tolerances and better machining/machines? etc. The net net, is a GT with PP becomes for me the call vs DH. Which I cannot afford anyhow a DH. Maybe one needs a cooler or 2 added for a 90+ degree day need someone to test/review that. Cannot imagine Ford or Getrag would ever say yah we tightened up manufacturing DT4 in 24 in Mex....but piques the mind.
@@joshcapecod6098 I'm not sure about the S650s, but for the 22'-23' the MT82s were done in Mexico. I'll take a Mexican transmission over a Chinese transmission any day. Specially, if Mexico already manufactures the TREMEC transmissions.
@@ClickbaitMotorsports yup we agree. Mex>China. For some reason i made the error of thinking the '24 MT82 D4 was superior to '18-'23 MT82 D4. Have to poke around forums, and see if can get a visual on where find manufacturing occurred for them. Example CHinese MT82 in '22 were lying around for earlier builds.
I have been using the DJI Osmo Action cameras since the first version came out and ditched my GoPro cameras when I realised how great the stability was.
I use them in Australia on very hot days, often sitting on the dash for hours on end and have never had one fail.
I’m dying the walk by. Matt you a comedic genius
Screen instrument clusters are something I could probably get used to but, I still feel like screens are overrated. My biggest issue is they can never be dim enough when driving in rural areas.
Didn't mind the lack of in car, if you hadn't said anything I probably would have thought you were just trying something new. Just a thought, not everyone has great canyon roads like you. It might be good to mix up the venue and show some shots of how the car is to use in actual life. Love the channel, keep up the great work!
American Muscle has never been better than in more recent times. It gets true genuinely sensory dependent drivers, so excited, and hopeful, for a freedom of a future of creative engineering designs to bring the world together for the sake of improving the transportation quality of our vehicles we use daily, and beyond that, it also improves the quality of our lifestyles. It's a joy to see the USA (Which is truly supposed to be the worlds greatest country) make a difference in the drivers car, free market/arena of design, art, and engineering scientific AMERICAN performance. America will always be the melting pot of not only many influential cultures, but yet also infinitely creative IDEAS, that will ultimately change the world for the better.
Honestly, I think you may have stumbled upon a new thing here. I prefer how this video was edited. You do great dub-over, and this makes great use of that while giving us more of that quality B-roll and more dash cam footage. I dig it. 👍🏻
Gave up on buggy GoPro's a long time ago
I finally gave up on mine last month and am switching to DJI.
4:25 Forget drive-by's. Walk-by's are clearly superior!
Just imagine run-by's :)
Yes! Great video. Finally some straight forward feedback on the new Mustang
The embargo on reviews must have lifted today because I log onto RUclips in the first three videos are on the new mustang on the same roads lol...great vid as always
Nothing new, thats how it works.
Not gonna lie....Im digging this format style for sure. Shows the car alot better and gives a better feel
Sounds greats for a factory exhaust. Cali feds are gonna have a field day with false state refs. I'm not a mustang guy but I do appreciate Ford for making a drivers car all the while maneuvering through stringent regulations. Excited to see what the community brings to the platform in the next few months.
Why can they not integrate these digital screen better on these cars?
Seriously. I don’t need to be sitting at another dual-monitor workstation on my way to/from sitting at my dual-monitor workstation.
The sad part is that the digital screens on the 2018-2023 models are very well integrated. This new interior screams "cost-cutting".
Hit the nail on the head - I have a 2018 GT Premium PP1 - Magnetic shocks - Active Valve Exhaust - Basically the same car - This is a near perfect Everyday Driver. The car puts a big smile on my face every time drive it + It’s been dead reliable and 30+ MPG on the highway! Thinking about getting a 2025, but I do love the car I have 🤔 Happy motoring 🤠
oh, the sound is right! Love the "old school" vibe on the video!
Love the new format. My biggest complaint with the previous format was always having to see Matt’s face, but I always loved the light editing touch over some of the more experimental styles in some recent videos. This is the best of both worlds! Jk, you are great, sorry about your GoPro. Insta360 all the way!
The 5.0 is the biggest reason i got a new to me truck, had the 5.4 and had it in the shop a half dozen times for plugs deciding they want to leave the block. The nicer newer with more options has such a nice feel and sound stock im excited to see how it does with some simple tasteful bolt ons.
That V8 burble sounds great. Inside the car, outside the car, just great.
The white car that drove past at 16:44 looked A LOT like a '70 Opel Manta, can't believe you'd run into one in the States, let alone up in the canyons....
It was. Matt black roof and a few decals. Lovely.
@@ochayethegnu2915 very nice indeed. Here's hoping we'll one day see a Capri ride past too :D
i believe you are correct. i thought it looked like an RX-2, but the badge on the front grill gives it away. nice call.
I’ve watched this video countless times. This is the Mustang I MUST HAVE. Simply well done Ford. The Dodge I currently have is now “ Played out” everyone has it. And it k I l l s me on the inside when I see what these Kids are doing to them. Whereas The Mustang is Not alluring to these young bucks. So this old Cowboy is going to change to a Mustang. 😊
Great video and first drive. Love the looks of the new car, sounds great even in the video, but still disappointed in the ipad dash (Although the fox body option is cool!)
One part really stuck out though "Few bits of evidence of cost cutting". When the "everyman's" car like a Mustang or Camaro now has a 5 or 6 as the starting number on price, the last thing I'd ever want when getting into the car is feeling like theres cost cutting going on. I understand the days of $30k sports cars are over, but when Matt says the price will probably be around $60k for this model, "Cost cutting" are not the words I want to hear.
That's the trade off you make. If you want a similar performance/experience with better materials, then you'll pay more. I mean, you can step into M2/3/4 territory but bring your wallet...
Average cost of any new car is almost 50k now so this GT being in that range means it's not that expensive compared to the rest of the industry, just like has always been the case.
@@KyleRohde For sure, but I think accepting inflation is still hard for many. People aren't used to hearing "A mustang GT costs $50k". I just built one out on the Ford site and only added a couple options over base, and before taxes we're right at $48k, so yeah, over $50K for a lower trim Mustang GT. That's a hard pill to swallow for many, especially since it's suppose to be the "affordable" sports car.
@@KawiMark oh I get it. I just built one out at 58K and find it hard to believe too but costs have gone up like crazy on cars, beyond inflation.
@@KawiMark Thanks Joe.
I'm looking forward to a Dark Horse vs M4 comparison in the future. It'd be interesting to see how those two stack up, with many of the stats being pretty similar.
Stock performance, sure. But downpipes and a cheap emailed tune take the m4 to a level the mustang can't reach without adding forced induction.
I think for the extra $30-40k you spend on the m4 you could probably afford forced induction on the mustang
@@chipcurrey653 shifting the goalpost to price? I'll bite. Get a new 440i and do those mods then. Still faster than a 5.0 w/o forced induction and it's the same price. 🤷🏿♂️
@@KingDavid0606 I don't think I'm shifting the goal post as much as pointing out the silliness of trying to compare modified cars with voided warranties to stock cars
@@KingDavid0606 Or do you mean the dark horse is 59k?
Nice review. Interesting.. but still prefer the looks and sound of the 2022 Mach 1 Perf Pack by a country mile.
@9:22 - You press one button and the entire panel moves with it. That seems very Mustangey.
Noticed this too. What the hell is this cost savings
I saw that and was appalled that something like that happened in a car with this price tag. It's even unacceptable at the base Ecoboost's price
It's designed to be a single button with separate touch pads underneath. I don't like the way it looks either but with less moving parts and the ability to seal it behind a single cover theoretically it "should" last far longer. Picture in your head a sealed touchpad or calculator button pad. When was the last time you've ever had to replace a sealed touchpad for failure? The only question is what happens if a button does? Does the entire strip go bad? Or are they separated underneath like a PC keyboard key?
Glad that Ford fixed whatever weirdness was happening with the MT-82 shifter, and it's a shame about the steering being dead but overall seems to be a really solid car.
Love the praise you gave the 5.0 motor, Matt. Other than Ford/GM/Stellantis, who else makes a V8 that sounds that good, makes that kind of power and does it all with great reliability and low maintenance? Certainly not the Germans. As the owner of a 2011 GT with 163,000 miles and a motor that still performs like new, I'm sure happy with it.
The Lexus IS500 would like a word with you
@@piercetucker1644 yeah, that’s a good one!
I hope these depreciate a decent amount in the first 2 years if it is 60k, i really want the s650 but there's no fuckin way I'm paying 50 or 60 for a GT
10000% Just way overpriced as most things are these days.
The integra S is 52k. The Z can be 50k. The supra is above this with alot less power...
@@claudemartin7785 and I wouldnt pay that much for any of those cars, especially when I could get a one year old used amg still in warranty for the same price
@@wyattbreedlove7001 could get a used RS, AMG, M Series which are much nicer. But I guess it depends what you want. The Bronco is over priced as well. Oh well!
@@claudemartin7785you just supported the fact that everything is over priced.
Can't wait for the Dark Horse!
1:10 Matt's left leg tattoo is clutch
that entertain center under the tv is pretty G
Awesome Color though I just saw a Video where behind the Front Wheels there is an Opening which collects Rock or moisture and in Winter Snow Condition will Cause Corrosion in the Rocker Panel, because the added panel keeps it from clearing up. The only way to Fix is Replacing the Shroud or adding Mud Guards this is only on the S650
Cool man still a could video, and yes it is a Bonus
I'm happy with my 2022 Roush Mustang
Matt can drive hard and still talk about good relevant aspects of the car. I can't do either!
@16:42 that's actually an Opel Manta in the US!
This review really makes me miss the one take ones. Please bring back one take reviews.
Great review Matt. I don't know why automakers make performance cars these days and don't put much focus on steering feel. Bad steering will ruin a car for me, but the new Mustang GT seems cool outside of that
Because literally 99% of cars have bad steering feel they don't need to spend money on it. Unless you're cross shopping this with Porsche, Civic Type R, you would never notice and no one is cross shopping between those options.
@eurly93 not sure if I fully agree with your statement, but I understand where you're coming from. I would say buyers who would actually notice steering feel is a pretty small percentage so like you said, companies don't see a reason to invest dollars there. Also, the 99% number you threw out was a bit of an exaggeration haha
Sounds glorious!
So the Mustang has matured. Great to see. Let's hope the market responds positively.
Nice! misha mansoors guitar in the background pretty sweet.
Honestly, the numb steering alone pretty much kills any interest I might have had in this car. Despite where they let you drive it, this is obviously a Midwest stoplight-to-stoplight muscle car, and I like sports cars.
Maybe time to pack your bags and move to some socialist hell? 🇺🇸
Mustangs are muscle cars. If it seats 4 pple, its not a Sports Car. I know my own GT500 muscles many cars around, including several sports cars.
That tunnel clip slightly reminded me of the high revving GT350. The lower tone sounds great.
This looks like a brilliant package, I definitely want one with this spec. I enjoyed the edit too, we're all here to hear your thoughts on the car so at least the audio wasn't lost 😂
At that price , better off with Mach 1, or boss 302
@@michaeltabanao8092Agreed!
video came out just fine
This mustang is the one my friend is nicely upgraded
If it costs more than 60 grand you would be crazy not to buy a Corvette instead . I like Ford , but the closest thing they make that Rivals the Corvette is the Ford GT . Not the Mustang , the Mustang compares with the Camaro .
you find a new vette for 60k. Ill wait
I doubt it will be more than 60 grand unless optioned crazily, and if you want a manual then the Corvette isn't an option (well, the C8 anyway).
They're pretty different cars, even if you could get a Corvette around 60 (not possible yet).
I would do C8 but I want a manual and backseats
A C8 for $60,000, LOL
Love the road shots vs. looking at your (or any other guy's) face!
Sure sounds good!
Great sound.
Ticks my boxes!
Just want to mention how cool of an Easter egg it is to see Misha’s signature guitar in the background during the ad
The new format is great!😂
Love this channel, Matt provides information in a conversational manner, i learn so much watching the reviews
wish they'd have an option for 2013-2014 s197 gauges :(
Best looking spec out of all they gave to journalists during that ford event.
I just got rid of my overheating GoPro's and am switching to DJI Osmo Action 3's. As good or better than GoPro depending on who you ask. Seen several comparison videos and the DJI comes out on top most of the time. (Action 4 with 4k 120fps and larger sensor coming soon) Can't recommend on experience yet (still waiting for my order to ship) but plenty of positive reviews out there.
That is a lovely credenza/sideboard in the background
That car sounds the absolute nuts 👌🏼
Love the Brasilia credenza in the opening shot.
You didn't talk about its looks, what do you think ?
Ooooohhhh, Broyhill Brasilia. The best looking furniture on planet earth.
Nice Broyhill Brasilia piece under the tv
The S650 is literally a bodykit on the S550 + new intake for a small power boost. Interior update is nice, but besides the dashboard the rest of the car is the same there too. I won't be upgrading anytime soon from my '21 GT.
i dont mind this style. I get to see more of the car that Im here for.
Loving the way this car sounds 🔥
There's a saying that goes, "One monkey don't stop no show". I don't think I am alone in saying that I would have been fine if you had soldiered on with the review after your GoPro died. I especially enjoyed the interior camera looking out through the windshield over the hood while you were driving and giving your critique.
That exhaust sounds sick!
just got a Hero11 myself and all it did this weekend was overheat after 20minutes, huge bummer
Nice to have pov angles back 😃😃
Great video excited for the new stang.
Thanks Matt. The Mustang GT is a good, old-fashioned American performance car. It's made for our roads and it suits us normal Americans just fine. I own one so I might be a little biased. ;-)
The ‘dual-screen workstation’ dashboard trend needs to go away already. I already spend enough time in front of my work computer. I want analog gauges for my driving experience.
Thought I saw the gt was a $50k car.. must have seen a different options list
This looks like the 74 coming out of Palm Desert. I've driven and ridden this road many times.
Great info. I really enjoyed you're review and I'm gonna keep a eye out for your future videos. Loved how you got into the real specs
Serendipity. 😎👍
Man I always enjoy your reviews and I feel like your personal perspective is important and Valid Matt, thank you. I too would like to praise Ford Motor company for sticking with the Mustang all these years, through thick and thin. Ford has always found a way to sell these and keep them competitive against whatever their competition has been over the years. Now they are the only ones gearing up for another generation while Dodge and Chevrolet dump their cars. I'm currently driving a 21' SS 1LE as it suited what I was looking for, but I'm just glad to see that Ford is going to continue to make these. Hopefully it will lead to other companies coming back around to making more affordable V8 RWD sports cars.
As expected Great review love that you separated track folks from your average consumer. Track people complain like manufacturers are selling a race car not a care that can do everything with a warranty! Keep up the great videos and we did miss seeing your glasses in car lol!
It is a beautiful car!!
Great video. What a soundtrack. Car sounds awesome
But you know it’s gonna be one of those days
Few people can do it like Matt!
Very hot 94° - I’m in North Texas, it’s about 105°😂
486 hp out of a naturally aspirated v8 is a beautiful thing.
