This song is one of my faves from the Summer of 1969 I was 12 and my Mom had 7 of us, the oldest one was out and married and the rest of us had just moved closer to Folsom CA and it wasn't always perfect but that summer will always be my favorite because my Brother took us to Folsom Lake we'd spend all day and come home to Dinner that Mom had ready for us and after that my Brother would treat us to banana splits, he always made the best. and we'd watch TV till we fell asleep. That is still my favorite summer of my life and I always shared a great love for music with my older Brother, I have memories attached to so many parts of my life, brings back memories some good some sad. My Brother died of aids in 1993. So when I listen to oldies and hear the songs we shared all through the 60s it makes me sad but it's odd because it's a mixture of funny moments and just in general I hold on to the best memories. The 60s for a kid was rough we had lost a President who was murdered in the street, we lost Martin Luther King, then Bobby Kennedy. Thank you for sharing.

This was certainly a wonderful and mellow song. During 1969 I was Junior majoring in forestry and spent the summer at Grand Canyon National Park as a fire lookout. My family moved from Los Angeles to Portland, Woodstock was held, and I remember the year well. I am very sorry about your brother's illness and your loss. I came out in the early 1980s and AIDS was just starting. I feel particularly fortunate that neither my brother nor I got HIV. We both lost so many friends to that damned disease. I wish your brother and our friends had lived long enough to when AIDS no longer was a death sentence. How did I handle it? I helped as many people as I could just as did every other gay man I knew. We weren't special or heroic. Rather we were a community who helped each other when no one else would help, Thank you for reminding me about AIDS and thank you Oliver for such a beautiful song.

Thanks, Bobbie. I was born in '56 and had two older sisters who introduced me to great music. I remember that summer, too, and it wasn't long before the Zodiac replaced Manson as a source of terror. I'm sorry to hear about your brother but glad he 'turned you on' to all that great music.

Being the youngest in my family, and the youngest first cousin in both sides of my family I knew this might happen but damn, does it cut you to the quick.

While not as popular as Oliver's version, Rod McKuen, the original writer who penned the song for the movie 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' also recorded a version. A few years later, Sergio Franchi covered it on the Ed Sullivan show. Each artist added their unique nuances to this lovely song.

@@starlord Yes, I'm familiar with the Rod McKuen version, and I have that on Vinyl, and I have an unopened Oliver album with Jean on it and Good Morning Starshine. I was looking for the Sergio Franchi version of Jean so that I could listen to it, and they don't have it on YT. It's a shame because he's got a great voice! I've heard the Ray Conniff Singers version of Jean many times, and it's very good. Jean, to me, is one of those songs that is like the song "Born Free", and there's no bad version of it! Me too. Billie Jean was from Arkansas and was in Dallas for the summer to earn money for her Senior year. We were both 17. I have never and will never love anyone as much as I loved her. She didn't think a long distance romance would work and her parents ended it. I was devastated. I didn't understand it then but they were right. I just hoped that somehow someway we would find each other again. I will never give up hope.
