The judge told Brooks that if he continues to act up, at some point she will declare that he is unable to manage his own defense and she'll remove him from the courtroom *permanently.* He won't get to participate in the decisions or his case, a court appointed attorney would do it. This is why he's been so compliant in the courtroom for the most part. He doesn't want to hit that point of no return. He craves the attention and doesn't want to miss out.
The judge is going to spend more time dealing with this killer's antics than she will on any other part of the trial. He's manipulating her, and the legal system, and they need to shut him down. It's become a one ring circus, with him as the main act - "act" being the key word. Everybody has to treat him with kid gloves, for fear of being branded with the "R word".
