Thanks for taking the time to remove all the heatsinks and stuff off the motherboard. Its good to see it without all the bits that hide the actual board.

There's a lot of comparisons to the ASRock Nova in the comments. You have to decide which is more important to you. Having full PCIe 5.0 x16, but only one M.2 connected directly to the CPU in the case of the Nova. Or three M.2 connected to the CPU directly with this board, and the PCIe 5.0 running at x8 if more than one is used. No GPU planned is using full PCIe 5.0 x16, and this board still has an additional M.2 on the chipset, if you want to run full x16 and have two M.2. The Nova is not better by default, this is a Chipset / CPU lane limitation either way.
@vqa33 M.2 to CPU is less latency. More PCB layers is usually only to prevent signal interference, which depends on efficiency of trace routing. ASRock may have needed 8 or simple added for "extreme" OC of memory, which most do not do. All boards share lanes between PCIe and storage. Here it's the same, but with the Gigabyte board you have the option to have an additional 2 M.2 directly to the CPU, the ASRock does not.
I just don't like the GPU lane sharing and having a lot of USB 2.0 for a "new and improved" MB. I feel that it is better to buy a good x670e and just update/flash bios or just buy the AsRock x870e Nova if it is not out of stock (currently out of stock).
I was looking at the ASROCK X870 Nova - I wish Leo would look at some ASROCK boards, they are such good value. I just dont know if their bioses are any good and if they are stable.
there are bunch of stuff that doesn't require huge speed and without any issue on USB 2.0 such as peripherals. It is better to have such stuff for those things.
After having a Dead Strix 870E mobo (code 0d, dead mobo) and broken TUF board delivered, I went with this motherboard. Easiest build yet, it just worked! 9900x, 64GB of T-Create 6000MT's, and 4080 Super. It has been a very strong board as I have pushed it on stress tests and found a split second it bounced up to 5.9Ghz in a Cinebench 23 test. Thanks for your review to get this one out there. GREAT BOARD.

Just got the board delivered today.. Nice to get a review on the same day. One of the reason for purchase was because of the pcie slots though, since I want to put a 10gig nic in it. So yes there is a use case for those x4(x16) slots ;). Now just waiting for 9800x3d to be released.
Micro Center is offering a bundle w/ the 7950x3d, I've been wondering if it's worth pulling the trigger. I don't like how the PCIe x16 slot shares bandwith w/ two of the M.2 slots though, but I've read that supposedly it won't affect GPU performance much, but not sure what the reality is.

Thanks for a great review! I am thinking of getting this motherboard or its "Pro" variant, as it has a bit better VRMs. The thing I don't really like is that if you use any of those Gen 5 m.2 slots, the primary slot drops down to x8 mode. That's plenty of bandwidth for the majority of graphics cards nowadays, especially the new ones that are about to come out, but it's something to keep in mind as a buyer. Again, thanks for a great review!
I believe you forgot to mention that the CPU socket has a reinforced backing plate, as well as the graphics card slot, I have this board and along with the pushbutton pcie release and the tool free drive access, with a 7900 XTX I really appreciate the extra rigidity of the reinforced slot. This really is a great board - very well balanced and not compromised - just a small accessory pack with it. Are those VRMs any good ? how are they rated? I dont understand that side of things very well.
I almost regret having just bought the MSI Carbon, but not quite. I may have a use for the PCIe x4 slot: a Blackmagic Decklink card. That aside there's not much in it.
This board might even be considered budget by some, especially when the MSI Godlike and ASUS Maximus are priced between £700+. - £1300. Crazy prices in 2024
It’s nice they have added some vents into the rear Io panel but really that whole area needs a bit of a redesign. It’s very busy and congested with all those ports shoved into it nowadays.
I've been thinking about just getting a 670e for my next build, but the easy installation features for m.2s and the release button for the graphics card may push me the other way. I tend to slowly upgrade my systems over time so those things add value. The BIOS looks really good. I can take or leave the usb4 or wifi 7 though.
LOL - whom uses SATA based 2.5" drives these days - well, I do. My NAS is full of them, my main PC has 4 of them (plus an additional NVMe drive and (*GASP*) a DVD writer), etc, etc. Anyways, that's a solid looking board for the money - so I can safely move to having two NVMe drives with that board, keep 3 of the SATA drive's and the DVD writer. Def think it's a fair price, they made very good choices for trade offs.
The 2 pci-e slots may be basic but Gigabyte have at least fitted them, me I have a 10gbe and a capture card and it's extremely frustrating finding most motherboards have all their lanes allocated to m.2 slots.
for all high end OC boards , wish they gave : - ram fan cooling bracket for those high end OC settings plus small size 10mm thick fans like the noctua ones or some way to cool the ram without interference with cpu heatsink - longer wifi antennas - dual bios - cmos reset switch - cpu contact frame for better thermals and protection of the cpu bending issue + a proper hex torque wrench for that ilm frame screws - rgb remote control - sophisticated 12V and 5V sata powered fan hub with 10 ports each for PWM and rgb - m.2 expansion card - include a bunch of PWM extension cables - PTM 7950 thermal pad - two ps2 ports for no frills connectivity for mouse+kb while in bios - marking on the usb headers which have direct connectivity lanes to cpu for that low latency IO devices like mouse + kb for gaming - some replica of asus nitro path
Good review Leo - price point seems good, but last Gigabyte board I had was very poor, had a lot of hard locks. sent it back and got a ROG board, much better
Excellent review but I do wish you'd gone further and tested the fit of secondary expansion cards. I run 10 Gb networking so it's an immediate no-buy issue if a 4-slot GPU blocks that x4 slot. Or if using a card in that slot negatively affects the temperatures of a 4-slot GPU. BTW I class a budget board as under £100.
You would be lucky to get the box for £100 the way prices are in the last 12 months. I agree, I used to think that way too. but a budget board now seems closer to £200.
I've had this board for 3 weeks and the only little complaint I have is the lane sharing and no clear cmos on the back. I've done some research, and it doesn't look like lowering the GPU bandwidth hurts too much if even at all for gaming. Looks like in most cases you might lose a couple of FPS which probably won't be noticeable. That being said, I have 3 of the M2 slots populated and everything has been smooth. 2 x gen 4 2tb and 1 4tb gen4 crucial.
Yeah, but you can put one PCIe Gen 5 in that gets lanes from the CPU and one Gen 4 that gets its lanes from the chipset and you won't hit the top PCIe slot - so you'll still get the full x16 for your graphics card. This is an issue for all the X870e motherboards, not just Gigabyte.
@@CRF-2013 I meant the sharing of the PCIe16 5.0 lanes with M.2 SSD. True, not only Gigabyte shares PCIe lanes when M.2 SSD is installed. As far as I know the ASRock X870E Taichi ( and the lite one) has one M.2 which gets 4 lanes PCIe 5.0 without sharing lanes from the PCIe 16 Graphicscard slot. But then again 8 lanes of the PCIe_1 (16 gen 5.0) slot will be shared once the PCIe_2 gets occupied as well. As far as I know now only ASRock Taichi boards do not share PCIE_1 5.0 lanes with PCIE M.2 SSD.
Hoping they release a similar speced matx board with B850 later this year. Wish the we'd get more POST troubleshooting LEDs (88-digit leds) on midrange boards. Looked at their B650M Aurous Elite and I couldn't find even find a single LED for troubleshooting. That doesn't seem very elite, but maybe they like getting boards back as defect claims 😂
And yet, usualy 670 series frim Gigabyte had problems with bios and ddr stability. Does the new 870 series suffers the same? This is the only question that deserves an answer.
I went with the aorus pro ice x870e because it's by far the best looking white board on the market. And I'm not dumb enough to think 5.0 8x is really going to drop performance by more than 10-15 frames even on a 5090 if I want a few more SSD's.
I just bought the msi 870 tomahawk. It's unopened. Newegg has this gigabyte board with a set of corsair 6400 ram for 320$ which board would you prefer?
I got one of those by default, my ASUS TUF B650 WiFi board died after 8 months, ongoing issue with ASUS. I decided I had enough of ASUS, so I decided to jump ship with Gigabyte X870E Aorus Elite WiFi7. Really nice, lots of features and temperatures on the CPU also greatly reduced. The price is not that much more than regular B650 main board. I have the RealTek version. Thumbs up from me :)
still waiting on any new 870 mb to have backside connectors and to be as white as possible for a clean build... anything else would look out of place in my white Light Base 600LX...
There are multiple reviewers who are unable to get their 9800X3D to run 6400 gear 1 or 8000 gear 2 stable on their 4 DIMMs board. I'll stick to 2 DIMMs board if you know what's good for you.
Good question. It is a conventional HDMI for the integrated graphics and the idea is you can power a screen inside your PC case, most likely in the front or side panel. If you are using a secondary external display you would use the regular output on the back panel. Leo
Can anyone explain the differences between the x870e Aorus Elite WiFi 7 and the x870e Aorus Pro? The Pro costs an additional £30-40 and I can't figure out what that extra cash buys.
@@KitGuruTech Will that make much of a difference to the average user? VRM 'science' doesnt make a lot of sennse to me, no one really explains what specific VRMs will help - processors or voltages etc.
Too bad that there are no temperature sensors (thermistor inputs). ASRock includes some with some of their boards (e.g.,Taichi (lite)) and they are super useful for fan control.
I've not had particularly good luck with Gigabyte products outside of mobo's, though from what I was looking at a few months ago on the E variants, this actually looks pretty reasonable versus everything else. At least two usable PCIe full x16 slots, lots of NVME lanes and a respectable backplate. ADD: For those of us running 5300RPM fans, yes, SATA slots do come in handy. 😁 As much as a bother as they are, nvme drives over 4tb aren't particularly plentiful or affordable, so mass storage still defaults to HDDs too.
Quite a few years back (think decades ago) Gigabyte had real quality problems with their motherboards. I can't remember the year, but they took up the issue at a management meeting and was seriously considering ditching the motherboards entirely as the RMA costs made them lose money on every sold MB. They decided to give it one last chance and this time the quality was supposed to be the primary when deciding on construction and choosing make and model of components rather than always go with the cheapest option. This was way before they "invented" the Aurous name, I would say it was more than a decade ago perhaps two. But the change was immediate. The motherboards they released after that cut down on the RMS cost by a lot, and suddenly they were making money on selling motherboards instead of losing money. AFAIK they've kept making decent motherboards since, instead of cutting corners until they fail often enough to cost them more money for the warranty replacements than they make selling them. All in all this doesn't really matter for customers today. I just think it's pretty interesting to know that once they were doing so bad that they were considering ditching the motherboard business.
@@blahorgaslisk7763 That sounds very accurate to my experience with the last GPU I got from them, back in the 280x era. While it never blew up like their power supply woes not too long ago, it overheated even with minimal tasks and would regularly self-destruct into Errorville in games. Between the 280x issue and their QA dipping lower on other product lines, I have been leery to pick up function-centric products from them, though I have eyeballed their TR40 boards numerous times. Good to know the effort is being made to improve!
@@RainOrbs Yeah, I've run into the m.2 downrating other lanes issue before, which was a particular draw to this generation of motherboard that was supposed to fix that (the X870E variants specifically). I've mostly decided to go X670E for half the price depending on the next variants of the X3D chips if the higher core counts (9900 or 9950s) get dual vcache allotments, otherwise the only other x870E boards that work for me are in the $500 range, which is just absurd to get bracketed into that segment for two features.
With faster memory the fabric divider changes from 1:1 to 1:2 i.e. it halves so DDR5-8000 functions but overall delivers minimal benefit. Until we have DDR5-10000 or 12000 it looks like we are stuck with 6000 or 6400. Leo
Gotta say thats a pretty sexy looking board too. not a cheap looking model. around 300 seems like a good price point for me, but I guess if you are buying the new 5090 then its ultra high end for you. or do people buying a 4090 or 5090 still buy a 300 motherboard?
@@boltsandbraces6261 x870e Nova wifi is the best value x870e board. Also, I plan to get the 5090 when it comes out. The Nova offered everything I needed for a fraction of the price of some of the expensive boards.

@@KitGuruTech Seems to be the non E (Gigabyte X870 Aorus Elite WIFI7) version which is a glorified B650 board or the non WIFI version Gigabyte X870E Aorus Pro Ice you can get in white.
Oh so dug a little deeper, the Gigabyte X870E Aorus Pro Ice does have wifi 7 but they dont advertise in the name, its a different Qualcomm version though but actually supports the 320MHz where as the Elite is only 160MHz. Very strange and confusing just like all the naming scheme is 870 and 870E what a boarderline scam.

Prices are very high now - This board might even be considered 'budget' by some, especially when the MSI Godlike and ASUS Maximus are priced between £700+. - £1300. Its a weird world.
Weird that thunderbolt never seemed to take off for a lot of pc makers, I heard the licensing fees were sky high, which is likely why, its always been a more elegant solution than USB
That is an area that needs a redesign. It's absolutely full up of stuff now. Would be difficult to use all the ports at the same time given the amount of congestion going on there.
Considering some of the high end boards are over £1000 or at least between £700 and £1000 (maximus and Godlike) - 300 bucks sounds like a lot, but in the grand scheme of things, the prices are so high now for high end boards - its difficult to put them into 'categories'.

You are right but for me x870E Taichi Lite is the way to go and it will arrive soon.
It’s nice they have added some vents into the rear Io panel but really that whole area needs a bit of a redesign. It’s very busy and congested with all those ports shoved into it nowadays.
Hey, KitGUru, where i can find pc stand exactly as yours?
I've been thinking about just getting a 670e for my next build, but the easy installation features for m.2s and the release button for the graphics card may push me the other way. I tend to slowly upgrade my systems over time so those things add value. The BIOS looks really good. I can take or leave the usb4 or wifi 7 though.
Thanks for your wonderful work
LOL - whom uses SATA based 2.5" drives these days - well, I do.
I got the X870E Aorus Pro Ice. Seems like it's basically this board for the most part, just white. Yes, or am I missing something?
"and Gigabyte would like to show us their snatch", I am dying over here LOL
🤐
benchmarking motherboards, nice job! Really wondering how the gigabyte and asus ai overclocking is gonna do
The 2 pci-e slots may be basic but Gigabyte have at least fitted them, me I have a 10gbe and a capture card and it's extremely frustrating finding most motherboards have all their lanes allocated to m.2 slots.
I wonder if MSI released bios update since you tested this MB?
for all high end OC boards , wish they gave :
- ram fan cooling bracket for those high end OC settings plus small size 10mm thick fans like the noctua ones or some way to cool the ram without interference with cpu heatsink
- longer wifi antennas
- dual bios
- cmos reset switch
- cpu contact frame for better thermals and protection of the cpu bending issue + a proper hex torque wrench for that ilm frame screws
- rgb remote control
- sophisticated 12V and 5V sata powered fan hub with 10 ports each for PWM and rgb
- m.2 expansion card
- include a bunch of PWM extension cables
- PTM 7950 thermal pad
- two ps2 ports for no frills connectivity for mouse+kb while in bios
- marking on the usb headers which have direct connectivity lanes to cpu for that low latency IO devices like mouse + kb for gaming
- some replica of asus nitro path
Good review Leo - price point seems good, but last Gigabyte board I had was very poor, had a lot of hard locks. sent it back and got a ROG board, much better
Thanks for sharing
Asrock has a great lineup as well
Yeah I want to see Leo with ASROCK boards for a change
We will be looking at some shortly, fingers crossed !
Why dont they do mesh blanking plates for PCI slots to aid with cooling?
Good job Leo!
It was a little mistake in the video but the bottom gen3 slot is actually x4 not x2. He probably got it mixed up with the X870 non-E Aorus Elite.
What about the Asrock X870E Nova WiFi? I heard features and price wise, it's an even bigger and better value than the Aorus Elite.
Watch this space...
2 x gen 4 2tb and 1 4tb gen4 crucial.

question: do any board have 5.1 optiical audio? that would save me buying a sound card (bc hdmi audio drops out for me and kills watching movies)
According to the specifications on the website of Gigabyte the PCIE 16 gen 5.0 slot shares lanes with the M.2 ssd's. So yeah....
I just want something insane from Aorus for Ryzen like the Elite X Ice they did for Intel. That is by far my favorite looking motherboard.
9:25 what happened to write on that GBT, looks like write and read were swapped
Good review thanks ❤
You’re welcome 😊
Hoping they release a similar speced matx board with B850 later this year. Wish the we'd get more POST troubleshooting LEDs (88-digit leds) on midrange boards.
Looked at their B650M Aurous Elite and I couldn't find even find a single LED for troubleshooting. That doesn't seem very elite, but maybe they like getting boards back as defect claims 😂
Thanks, it looks good for the money
No problem 👍
Doesn’t this chipset support 5Gb Ethernet? Any real disadvantage sticking with 2.5?
Been looking at the Proart x870e which seems similar. Gues I need to do some more work on this for a 90000x
The wifi plug looks like a power socket
You all should do the Asrock nova 870 e mobo, gskill memory, 7900xt video crucial memory?
We hope to look at that board soon
I have X870 model, without ''E''. Is there any difference beetwen theses mobos?
On paper they looks identical so concentrate on the features offered by your specific motherboard and all should be well.
Leo
As for what to use in those bottom two PCIe slots… A 10 Gbps NIC is a hard requirement for me and the bottom slot is perfect for one.
And yet, usualy 670 series frim Gigabyte had problems with bios and ddr stability. Does the new 870 series suffers the same? This is the only question that deserves an answer.
No ASROCK loving? I moved to them recently and found them to be good quality and around £30 less than even MSI who are cheaper than ASUS usually
Something coming soon 👍🏻
I went with the aorus pro ice x870e because it's by far the best looking white board on the market. And I'm not dumb enough to think 5.0 8x is really going to drop performance by more than 10-15 frames even on a 5090 if I want a few more SSD's.
I just bought the msi 870 tomahawk. It's unopened. Newegg has this gigabyte board with a set of corsair 6400 ram for 320$ which board would you prefer?
Tomahawk > Aorus Elite = TUF
Tomahawk any day
I got one of those by default, my ASUS TUF B650 WiFi board died after 8 months, ongoing issue with ASUS.
Glad to hear it!
What is the difference between X870 vs X870E?
the non e version is almost $200 aud cheaper u think thats a better choice money wise for same performance?
I don't understand that at all - here in the UK the difference is about £10. Looks like you have found a bargain.
Leo
@@KitGuruTech Yeah Australia is backwards prob cos its down under lol.
still waiting on any new 870 mb to have backside connectors and to be as white as possible for a clean build... anything else would look out of place in my white Light Base 600LX...
There are multiple reviewers who are unable to get their 9800X3D to run 6400 gear 1 or 8000 gear 2 stable on their 4 DIMMs board. I'll stick to 2 DIMMs board if you know what's good for you.
👍🏻
What's the internal HDMI socket intended for?
Good question. It is a conventional HDMI for the integrated graphics and the idea is you can power a screen inside your PC case, most likely in the front or side panel. If you are using a secondary external display you would use the regular output on the back panel.
Leo
To connect a LCD system monitor.
@@KitGuruTech Thanks Leo!
Can anyone explain the differences between the x870e Aorus Elite WiFi 7 and the x870e Aorus Pro?
The Pro costs an additional £30-40 and I can't figure out what that extra cash buys.
From memory a change to 80A VRMs is the big difference
Leo
@@KitGuruTech Will that make much of a difference to the average user? VRM 'science' doesnt make a lot of sennse to me, no one really explains what specific VRMs will help - processors or voltages etc.
Elite (Realtek and MediaTek) supports wifi7 160Mhz, while Pro (Qualcomm) supports 320Mhz standard
Too bad that there are no temperature sensors (thermistor inputs). ASRock includes some with some of their boards (e.g.,Taichi (lite)) and they are super useful for fan control.
thank you
I've not had particularly good luck with Gigabyte products outside of mobo's, though from what I was looking at a few months ago on the E variants, this actually looks pretty reasonable versus everything else.
Thanks for sharing
This board isnt that good, using more than 2 m.2 slots cuts the pciex16 to x8... x670 is better if you dont need usb4.
Sort of a bit disappointing that the internal usb-c isnt rated at a higher transfer rate.
I love this
Do they do a white version?
Not that we know of
I have a question, I thought AMD CPUs weren't very happy with RAM above 6000, is that now no longer the case?
With faster memory the fabric divider changes from 1:1 to 1:2 i.e. it halves so DDR5-8000 functions but overall delivers minimal benefit. Until we have DDR5-10000 or 12000 it looks like we are stuck with 6000 or 6400.
Leo
@ I see, thanks for the info and the review. I just grabbed this board and a 6000 RAM kit. 👍
Can i still use windows 10 on this boards?
Its been some time since I bought a Gigabyte product.
Maybe, sometimes people dont like spending money on motherboards or power supplies. we have noticed that anyway based on comments
Audio = ALC1220 - released 2017? That puts me off....
Certainly not a bad board at all. However, I’m going to stick with the MSI Carbon. I like the slightly better build quality and features, as well as the bios. Plus, it’s a Leo 9/10 😂💯
Also, I concur with others. Thank you for stripping the boards and showing us the naked truth lol
Good choice!
But can you get it in White or an equivalent?
Yes there is an Ice version at the same price
Nice review ty,
but everything above 150e is
very very Very very expensive.
All industry changed their policy, and switched to ROBBERY, more money there with less expenses.
Prices are very high now - This board might even be considered 'budget' by some, especially when the MSI Godlike and ASUS Maximus are priced between £700+. - £1300. Its a weird world.
Dont like that control centre software at all but it’s neat it updated the graphics card firmware.
Weird that thunderbolt never seemed to take off for a lot of pc makers, I heard the licensing fees were sky high, which is likely why, its always been a more elegant solution than USB
Do they seriously thing the holes in the back plate are going to help with cooling?
Well they cannot hurt, and you generally have a rear fan directly above the I/O so there should be a certain amount of airflow
Leo
The I/O panel isnt bad,. wouldnt have minded a few more USB or even a thunderbolt
That is an area that needs a redesign. It's absolutely full up of stuff now. Would be difficult to use all the ports at the same time given the amount of congestion going on there.
$300 is cheap for a brand new board now? Cheap?
It appears to be a decent value, but not cheap.
Considering some of the high end boards are over £1000 or at least between £700 and £1000 (maximus and Godlike) - 300 bucks sounds like a lot, but in the grand scheme of things, the prices are so high now for high end boards - its difficult to put them into 'categories'.
