I'm mowing solo, use a Stihl trimmer, Kohler push mower, don't have a blower I just do it with the trimmer. Enjoyed all your videos. Hopefully I can be as big as you one day.lol. NZ.
I started with a $90 push mower from a yard sale, a weedeater I borrowed from my dad, and a broom. I targeted a particular neighborhood that had a lot of small yards with driveways the size of two parking spots. Over time I got a blower, a 36 inch tractor mower with a trailer to pull it on, and my own weedeater. Then I upgraded to a larger trailer, added a 52 inch zero turn, a new blower when mine bit the dust, and an edger that I can switch the head for a weedeater head if needed.
I've worked for a company for 3 years where we have a crew of 4-6 out mowing lawns. We only use Honda HRC216 mowers because of terrain, obstacles, accessibility to back yards, and customers like having the smaller mower paths rather than a wide swath from a riding mower. Also, we hit about 70 lawns in 3 days.
Sounds like a good system you have set up. There are many ways to make my lawn look great and sounds like you have found a method that works for your company
Personally i love anything by Honda except them honda push mowers everyone seems to buy for some reason and TRUTHFULLY,they're complete garbage and I'll never buy one,EVER!!!!
Two push mowers for a two man crew is really helpful. One man mows and the other starts by edging and trimming and if that guy finishes first, then he can grab the 2nd mower and help finish mowing or start blowing. I have a setup very similar to your Jason. If I'm by myself sometimes I just throw my mower in the back of the truck, which I might regret one day when I throw out my back, but that why I like my residential mower, it's light compared to commercial ones.
I started by accidentally mowing my parents yard then I got 1 yard and this year I had 3 yards and a camp ground that takes me 4hrs to mow with my 42" troy built this next hope to have more yards
I have a Stihl FS70 trimmer, love it! It has enough power but not too much. Last year was my 1st year and i bought a Gravely 48 stander b/c i heard such great things from the youtube community on standers. Well, i live in VA with hills and a walk behind would have been better to start with. It has some advantages but can be tricky on hills. I will keep it, but also add a hydro walk behind as soon as I can. I have just a handheld blower and it works great for mowing season for sure. I have a hus 323 edger and it has worked great . My trailer is an enclosed 5 x 8 that I got for a steal and have taken great care of. Holds everything including my 21 Honda mower.
Echo is good also i won't lie but nothing comes even close to matching or keeping up with REDMAX!!!! HANDS DOWN!!! I'LL MAKE YOUR JOB ALOT EASIER AND FASTER BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING OUT THERE BETTER THAN A REDMAX!!! 100% FACTS!! YOU ALSO GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!
I have a husqvarna 150 backpack blower that I only use for fall cleanups. I mostly just use my weedeater or my mower to blow off road. I think I will be getting a handheld blower to look more professional. lol
believe it or not I have a husqvarna blower I got for 219 it's the 150bt and I'm honestly impressed,I like it better than my stihl commercials,so I sold em witg the string trimmers and replaced em with husqvarnas just rather recently and now I'm trying to replace my mowers,I have 1 honda and multiple multiple toro commercials but I'm looking a ybravo or just new toros or whatever,I'm not intrested in exmark
+Lawn Care Business thank you,I believe you're in Alabama, right? do you guys have troubles when trying to grow Bermuda, here you can grow it easily as long as you take care of it and not have a tree but anywhere in the shade will not grow it
We've run all those scenarios and they all work...biggest problem with 3 man crew is if lawns are really spread out the truck time kills you. Probably the best is 1 guy solo doing the small yards and 2 guys 2 mowers hitting the bigger yards. All depends on the guys experience that are working... I've had batman and Robin and I've had bevis and butt head... Lol
+Chris Smith Good points. I agree that 2 people is probably more efficient than 3 if the yards are spread out. If the route is very tight then I think 3 is better.
One man crew part time work for me with 42" ztr. I looked at a yard that was just two acres and thought it just doesn't keep me in my 40-50 $ range if I take it. So I passed, you've got to know your time and mower to make good money in this business. That's my take anyway.
Priceless info from someone who's been there done it. Thanks, you helped in my decision on a few things. Watch your videos all the time. Hope things are going well with you and your business.
What are your thoughts on 42-48 inch lawn tractors such as the John Deere X370 or X390? I was thinking about investing in one when I have the money, and a trailer.
Cutting by yourself with your own business is the best thing ever and the way to go until you start getting so much work that you have to get someone to help..😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😁😁😁😁😁
Do u recommend a walk behind zero turn or a sit down zero turn? It's mainly for small to medium residential and small commercial to medium. Just starting btw. Adding LawnCare to my Pool Business. Nice videos btw
Good vid, Good info. I am still running solo and i have found running a 36 walk behind with a sulky and a 30 inch push has been working out really well for the lawns I am working. As far as what brands of equipment, I have a bit of everything ( bobcat, honda, toro, stihl, shindiwa, echo, gravely) so not loyal to just one brand, I think if you keep up on regular maint. then any piece is going to be good.
+Lawn Care Business I apologize, it was a typo. It is a 525. They are great. Much lighter than Stihl trimmers. Plus I like Husqvarna's bump heads better than Stihl. I have found they are easier to load.
when I had my lawn service bissness we use to bag the leaves and haul them off in a trailer .the customers loved it . I will tell you a little history about my lawn service bissness that me and my dad started in summer 2000. it stated off with a push mower that I got for free .the bissness was in my name thin latter was put in my dad's name because I learned from him and he was the one who quit his day job for the lawn bissness . the bissness grew fast . it grew so fast that we did not have to higher employees we just hired smaller lawn bissness to help with over load of peak season. but in summer 2012 he unfortunately injerd his leg with a chainsaw between that and a divorce with my mom and him moving out of town the bissness was permanently closed January 1 2013 .
+Islandman Vagabond uuuuummmmmmm yea its called a mistake pepole make them all time and you have no room to talk because your pencil has an eraser on it and your keyboard has a delete button
Yes, it's a 21. I went official this spring instead of random, on-call jobs and upgraded. I got that same Troybilt to move up to a power driven. There's two TB's that look identical but one more expensive. When it finally dawned on me one had the Honda engine, it was a no brainer. Easy one pull starts and it's been a pleasure this spring with the power drive.
+lawn care business. I don't have a trailer yet, so it's kinda hard to have a riding mower, a push mower, a weedeater, and a backpack blower in one truck bed.lol. so I'm kinda looking for something a little smaller. would you recommend stihl or husqvarna for handheld blower?
+tmatlock3 I have not owned either more. I would get a Kawasaki or Kohler Engine if possible. Typically the engine is the part that needs to hold up the longest
hi Jason wich mower do you prefer the exmark navigator or a walker . everyone seems to have a preference to a brand instead of the quality of the actual individual mowers
+eps I have owned several Walker mower. I have never owned a navigator so I can't really compare the two. I know that many people have a preference but I think they both are great machine. I do like that the navigator will let you adjust the amount of bagging/mulching if you don't want to bag all of the grass. I am not sure of the other differences

It's a very smart move and a very wise move for your protection and your company/business and if you are just starting off then you might not be able to afford monthly insurance right away but i would get it quickly and you'll get it once you start to establish a good number of clients regardless. At least with a Walker you can run different decks and if you have a split boom trimmer with the attachments you have all you need.
That's true. Walker does have some nice attachments
Yard and garden tractors are always an option when it comes to being useful. Lawn tractors are okay if your lawn isn't too big.
