    Thanks, John! Another great video!! I LOVE your ideas for exercising this beautiful breed. I purchased a flirt pole, after watching another video from you, and our 3 year old doberman LOVES it!! It has become his favorite toy! Thank you again!!

    This is Louie in my profile pic. He is a 3 year old fawn or diluted red Doberman, half European and half American, weighs 100 to 105 lbs. Just bought the bubble machine and have had the flirt pole for a while. He loves to catch the toy on the end and give it the "death" shake while I am still tugging on it. He loves to do it right at first dark in the backyard when he gets the Doberman zoomies. Dobermans love being outdoors right after dark something about the night gets them going, at least Louie does.
    Here is my tip: We have a giant leash required park close to our house. I have a 30 foot retractable heavy duty leash, now I have been doing this with him since he was a pup, and he is physically very athletic. He is trained and senses when he is going to hit that 30 foot stop point and he runs laps in circles around me as I switch hands behind my back holding the leash walking across the field. He fully extends the leash, it is looks similar to the circle training running they have for tethered horses to teach them to run or trot only Louie hits full speed. He really gets excited when he see other dogs and kids and increases his stride when he sees them to show off. I also encourage him with a "Come on, let's go!!!!!" command. He loves it! He brings me his collar and tries to reach the leash every night. I have to spell the word w a l k around him or he starts barking and complain grunting to go. Best dog breed ever!!!

    Absolutely love this channel. So strange, picking up my 3rd Doberman pup next Saturday. My last one recently passed 💔 I hadn’t heard the name Arlo in decades. We decided to name him Arlo, then found your channel….. since then I’ve heard of a long lost friend that also named his so. Arlo and come into contact with a new client named Arlo. Amazing how that works. I love your Arlo, he’s amazing. Blessings.

    Love the video! Yeah for bubbles. Me and Moses were out in the snow this morning playing bubbles. The wind takes them far so Moses has to run far and fast to get them. Thanks to the neighbor behind me who has 5 acres and let’s us run him back there!!!! I like the looks of that pole thing on the tree!!! May give that a try. Our dog is also blessed to have three teens who play hard with him. Always keep the kids involved.

      I just want to add one more thing. Please make sure your Doberman is healthy for strenuous exercise. Also please make sure you holter your dogs every six months if possible. The male I lost to dcm. Use to run him 2-3 miles a day. Was sure glad I found out early that he had dcm. So I could cut out the strenuous exercise. One of the most needed things for our dobies.

    Another great video John!
    When I can, Nyx gets 3 x 30 mins sessions of frisbee a day... she'll do this in the rain, snow or mud lol
    If it's a dog park day or a romp in the field she gets a weighted vest with 5-6 pounds in it. Keeps her fit and jacked, but wears her right out.
    Treadmill is used only in the absolutely horrible days...way too hot or cold.
    I wanted to try the Fi system, but was given a FitBark from a friend. It's pretty cool too, just not as advanced.
    I'm going to try to upload some footage of Nyx playing frisbee.
    Cheers

    Another great video from John with plenty of fine ideas. Thanks John I learned a couple of new techniques. The way I exercise my doberman is using my backyard with a 15% grade Hill. My health sits on just over half an acre so I am blessed with a large back yard. My doberman loves to chase sticks. So I break them off about 18 in long and then use my pen knife to strip off the bark. I have about six or seven of these sticks and on any given play time I use three or four of them. She's so smart she always gets at least two, so it's a challenge for me to get the third one. And if I use fourth, only then am I assured that I finally have a fair chance to get one of them. What a champion with speed, agility, strength and Keen intelligence! Of course, I make her run up and down the hill and she likes to catch the sticks before they hit the ground, so I must throw them as long and hard as I can or otherwise she will outrun the stick while it is in flight! I find this technique is another good for Doberman owners to be aware of. It's low cost, challenging and engaging with your dog in a series of possession games. I also take my dog on very long nature trail walks because I am blessed to have at least four or five very large parks here in northern central Maryland. I find that when she is outside for long periods of time, more than an hour or two, that alone will burn up energy. Of course I always make sure that my dog has plenty of fresh water, with a pig ear for a treat before the water. I find that if she is given cold water directly after her intensive exercise she will consistently throw up. I encourage all Doberman owners to have the gastrointestinal stitch surgery to prevent the stomach from turning, because it is a threat to the life of the dog. I'm sorry I forget the medical terminology name of the procedure, but essentially it is laparoscopic and they stitch the exterior lining of the stomach wall so that it will not rotate. Many dogs have died because they did not have this procedure done as I learned from the University of pennsylvania, Ryan veterinarian school. Because she has von willebrands disease, I also had to have a laparoscopic spay performed on her as well. Certainly not an inexpensive breed to own from a healthcare perspective, but worth every penny. Back to my doberman, she is true to form a real velcro dog and the best companion dog I've ever owned! Truly a breed that stands Head and shoulders above the rest. Thanks again John for these great ideas and take care.

    Laser Pointers. We originally had it for the cat, but Ava took it over. We would joke about the remote control for the dog. She knew perfectly well that the red light came form the stick, she did not care; she would tell you to go it.
    One trip with friends, we forgot the all important device. Luckily one of our friends worked for emergency mgmt. and had one of the powerful laser pointers. He ran her around over a 1/2 mile radius.

    God made balls to help Dobe owners. LOL My husband spends 3 different times per day with a intense ball time. Good for him and the dobes! We can tell by speed of bringing ball back to how much the yayas have been spent. We are fortunate to have a very large fenced in backyard. Otherwise I don't think we could have 3 large breed dogs. At least keeping the energy level where it should be.

    I had someone tell me that the best way to tire out a Dobie is mentally bc you will never wear them out physically. My old Dobie used to love to "hunt" when I'd clean out the fridge! I'd cut up whatever leftover meats we had and then toss and scatter it throughout the yard while she watched. Then she'd spend a good hour or more hunting for every last morsel. She'd pace back and forth like she were vacuuming the yard to be sure she got it all, and would come in completely exhausted! We have a 3 month old now and we've begun the hunting game with her, too. She loves it, although she's not as dedicated to it. But, she does love to race our neighbor's dog through the fence as well as play goalie for my son when he kicks a ball around. I also like to take her on short walks where she can sniff All.The.Things, and that seems to wear her out pretty well bc of the mental stimulation.

    I tried playing the Shell game with Sammy. I'd put a treat under 3 cups, switch them around and let him touch a cup with his nose, then lift it to show him the treat is under the cup, then give it to him. Then switch them again and let him pick a cup and show him if he picked the empty cup, switch them again until he picks one of the two remaining treats, then work down to 3 cups with only one treat.

    I need some advise. Four months ago I rehomed a 5yr old retired Showdog after my 11 year old Doberman Duchess passed. My new Doberman Evi was apparently mistreated. So sad. She wants nothing to do with any of the dog toys here. She doesn't know what to do with balls. The only reason she moves the kong around is to get the treats out then leaves it.
    When she whines it's not a normal sound. Sounds horrible. They did something called "bark softening " to her vocal chords. The vocal chords grew back and she can bark and howls like a hound dog. It took some time for her to learn it's alright to get up on the couch with me. Just recently she started getting up onto my bed to sleep with me. I will keep working with her with the toys. She does love to run in the backyard.
    Thank you for your encouraging videos.

    I love your channel! Always great tips to love and nurture our dogs (dobermans and otherwise) better. I've always loved dobermans since my Aunt and Uncle had their own when I was a kid. Our whole family has so many stories from that one dog's antics! Dobermans are almost too smart! Definitely mischief makers if they don't have enough stimulation. On another note there are also tennis ball "guns" where you can easily reload them and send 'em flying. I ordered one for my MIL's rottweiler and she loves it! Her dad, in his late 80s, sits in his golf cart and shoots tennis balls and I don't know who enjoys it more- Ol' Pop or Sam the rottweiler!

    • @DobermanPlanet

      It shouldn't cause any issues - Dobermans are smart and can decipher what is real and what's not. But also, most of the flirt pole options are just tassels on the end and not plush animal toys.

    I'm planning on getting a canine slat mill once I have my Doberman. They are safer than human treadmills because they are powered by the dog running and stop when the dog stops. They also harness the dog in so there are no accidents involving a slip where the dog falls off.

    Hey John, as always, great stuff but I thought I'd add a few thoughts/opinions to your recommendations... With regards to biking, skateboarding or, for that matter, even jogging your Doby, you should be aware that doing so with young, immature dogs can be a real problem as it relates to proper bone and joint development. Heavy, prolonged exercise on hard surfaces can result in serious bone and joint issues in mature dogs so it's probably best to avoid these types of activities until your dog is fully matured. My concerns with the auotmatic ball launcher have to do with the projectile itself. I NEVER leave P.T. (my male pup) with tennis balls unsupervised as he, and Doby's n general, is a very hard chewer and will break down and swallow tennis balls inside of 20 minutes. Lastly, a tip for Kongs, get the heaviest one your pooch can handle. The heavier the better as it will give them a better work-out and will better resist chewing destruction.

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  2 года назад

      Totally agree, Bert! Dobermans shouldn't be heavily exercised on hard surfaces before 18 months of age because their bone structure is still developing. Always keep an eye on Dobies chewing balls as well. Great tips!

      I have a 9 month old Dobie and I have to be careful of what I leave in his crate or he'll shred it. I got him the Kong Extreme and I put doggie peanut butter in it. I also leave a nylabone in his crate. My Doberman is pretty smart and knows how to get out of his crate. So, I have to put thumb latches on his crate latches. When I'm home we use treat puzzles and training sessions.

    • @Ashley-so7jt
      @Ashley-so7jt 2 года назад +1

      @@ethelng3150 his crate is only large enough for him to turn around and lay down. We've only had Thor for about a month and a half, but I'm learning doberman can be pretty mischievous if left to their own devices. I do leave some heavy duty chew toys in his crate, but nothing that he can tear up or shred. He tends to hyperfocus on things when he's left alone. His previous owners didn't do much with him, so since he's older I'm having some difficulty with crate training and separation anxiety. But I highly recommend watching Doberman Planet's videos on crate training and separation anxiety. Honestly, this channel has been a lifesaver for me.

We use stairs as exercise for our 2 toy fox terriers (since they were about 6 mo. old and are now 11 and 13) and that helps wear them out in the winter when it's too cold to go outside or on days it raining. We now have a 16 week old male doberman and he's been using stairs for his potty runs since we got him at 12 weeks. I'm reading conflicting reports about whether doberman puppies under 1 should even be doing stairs. He is really too heavy for me to carry (35 lbs). What are your thoughts? Thanks!

    These things are not really so much lazy ideas of exercising one's dog, as they are very helpful ways to the handicapped such as myself. BTW if you stick the KONG ball on a long sturdy enough dowel, you can fling that thing pretty far afield.

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  2 года назад

      Thanks for pointing that out, Kacee! You're absolutely right, these exercise ideas could be a life-saver for a person in your situation. Especially since Doberman's don't "let-up" any energy for people with handicaps and they still have to get their exercise in one way or another. That's great to know about the KONG ball trick, too!

  • @dallemon15

    The list needs eight. Omitted was Dog Park. Most of the dogs will either exercise on their own or will exercise each other. Human either drives with dog in car to dog park or walk with dog to dog park. Maybe Doberman Pinschers generally do not feel like interacting with other dogs at a dog park. I observed them when visiting dog parks and that was how they tended to be - just not interested in other dogs, only observed that they usually walk slowly and stay near their human.
