I have been using this ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU as a handy reference book. I read through the book and enjoyed the little glimpses of examples. I love that this author believes in rescue dogs. The tips and training has been invaluable and gave me moments of...."how simple why didn't I think of it" so it's been a great tool. Thank you!
@@robertdixon8906 I suggest training right at the start and introduce them to new things. Also don’t forget to have a schedule so your dog knows when it’s training time food time outside time etc.!
Best part....have FUN with your dog while training. Please never punish the dog for doing something “wrong”. I come across too many people who tell me they beat their dog if it does something wrong. Saddens me because dogs just want to please their humans and it is not the dogs fault that the owner is inept at training with positive reinforcement. Dobes especially are very sensitive.
Have fun with your dog - ALWAYS ! Your words are perfect ! As we say in England, (and I'm sure it's the same everywhere else) if there's a problem with the dog, have a look at the human on other end of the lead, then you'll find the problem.
Great point Suzanne. Man I wish I added something like that to this video. Honestly I kept watching the clock and saw the video getting up to like 15 minutes in length so I started trying to slim down the length as much as possible. So some important things (like what you mentioned) didn't make it in. But that is really important and I'm glad you posted that here to reinforce that. Thank you!
Doberman Planet Your welcome. Was not trying to call you out on not mentioning it. Just frustrated with irresponsible owners who ruin or just plain confuse wonderful animals. It happens more than one would think. Dobes especially get a bad rap....lack of good positive training compounds the negative image. Thanks for a wonderful channel. Can’t get enough of All Dobermans cause I adore mine so much.
My dad used to push my puppy’s face into her pee if she peed inside. He’d also hit her and I honestly got really scared, especially considering that she is like my child to me, and a mom at the same time. Luckily not so much anymore.
I know you’re not doing these videos for money or fame and I seriously want to thank you for making this available and free, I appreciate the honesty and integrity you have for the breed itself. This information is so helpful. Thank you so much for these videos!
I grew up in the fifties with a Doberman in my family. I am now 73 years old and have rescued an 18 month old male, not because I wanted another doberman after owning five in the past but due to the fact that he ws left out on a dog run and ignored by his owners. I am very aware of the traits of these wonderful dogs but still enjoy your take on their training and crazy antics. Keep up the good work.
This video is 3 years old, the information is still good! I used to obedience train dogs one on one along with their owners. It's been awhile. Many years, lol. My baby, PJ, was whelped December 17, 2023. I met his sire, dam & 11 siblings. All are great dogs! I brought him home on March 8, 2024. It's barely been a week, that's all it took to fall in love with this great puppy. He is already mostly potty trained & knows the "wait" command. I make sure that when going through a door, I go first, hand signal & say "wait". Once I am through the door, I say, "come" along with a hand gesture to come to me. I taught him to not jump up on me, he learned that so quick, less than 2 hours! He is still very young, I'll do more learning of commands in a few days or a week. He learns so quickly!
Our little girl “Nova” is a week younger than your “Arlo”. Your videos helped my wife gain the confidence and excitement to adopt her, and the instructional videos such as this one have been so vital in her development/socialization/training. Thanks for being such an enthusiastic and knowledgeable resource. :)
That means so much Caleb, thank you for leaving this comment. Congrats on Nova! Very cool name by the way. Anyway, I'm so glad you got something useful from this video! Really means a lot to hear.
I want to get a doberman but my parents think they are mean and aggressive. But watching these vids makes me think better of these dogs and I'm planning on getting one when I live independently
Somehow when I was teaching my nugget “sit” he started associating me putting my hands on my hips with the command. When he’s being hard headed I put my hands on my hips without saying anything and he’ll sit 😂 oops...
Watch some Michael Ellis training videos. You'll learn that the dog learns the visual cue stronger than they do verbal cue. Always give the verbal cue before the visual cue in immediate succession, then phase out the visual. Verbal precedes physical.
Thank you so much for these videos. I’ve just found your channel. Discovered it first from reading your articles on your website. We had our first Doberman, Goose. He was the best dog ever. He died very recently and my heart is just broken! We are bringing home our new puppy in a few weeks. I can tell you that our Goose was so in tune with our feelings. I had a very bad thing happen to me one day at a medical appointment & when I came home he literally took care of me. He immediately sounded something wasn’t right & he sat with me in the most loving way for hours. This video has given us some good reminders of how to ensure success for our new little guy, Bo and us. I firmly believe that success of the dog is equal to success of the owners. I’m going to watch more of your videos to refresh & get some new ideas.
I am on our 5th Dobe. Your training methods are soo helpful to the new-bes . ! My one suggestion is that you always say their name first before a command.
One thing I found that helped when training puppies was to use a slang version of the command I was working on until they got it close to what I needed in an obedience trial (also used the hand signals that would be used in the Utility Dog Signal exercise). As an example, when they were just starting out or 8 weeks of age, I would use 'kommere' instead of 'come' until they were doing it reliably at about 3 months when I would begin to change it to 'come'. 'Kommere' could be repeated multiple times with lots of praise and treats and they could mosey on over and stop to sniff something interesting on the way and still get rewarded when they finally got to me but as it evolved into ' Rover, come', it was expected to be on the first command and finish with a snappy sit in front. 'Kommere' would still be used throughout the life of the dog at a dog park or when it was just a friendly stroll through the woods and I wanted them to leave what they were doing and keep up, but it didn't needed to be a precise sit in front, just come near enough to pet on the head. 'Lessgo' would be walk along with me or near enough (stopping to sniff or pee or just be a dog was okay). Another 'lessgo' if they got too interested in a mouse hole or pee post and were getting left behind rather than a 'Heel' where they had to maintain their position at my left knee. Watch the Westminister Master Class of obedience. I've never seen AKC obedience trial where the handler is completely silent and limited to hand signals like the CKC UD titled signal test, but you must have something similar. If you know what the standard signals are, you can incorporate them into your training now, although as long as the signal you use is not exaggerated and you return your arm immediately to your side, you can use any signal you want. Meats was trained to drop 'dead' - kick his legs out and drop on his side, often sliding for good measure, on recall if you pointed your finger at him and shot him, but if I just raised my arm over my head and dropped it, he would drop into a ready down and wait for the recall sidnal again to finish the exercise. That 'Down on Recall' should be taught to every dog! It's saved at least one of my dogs when my son called his dog home from a field across the road. A 'hotrod' driver turned on to the street as the dog was coming. Quick thinking on my son's part dropped the dog on the other side of the road just in time to let the speeding car pass. I often thought it should be part of first level obedience training - even if a verbal command is used with the arm signal.
My baby girl is coming home in 3 weeks. I'm very excited, she'll be the first dog I have as a puppy, and the very first of my own, and I've been reading and learning all I can. Thank you for sharing all this with us, it's definitely helping me feel more secure. Can't wait to teach her everything!
I'm in your exact situation right now! (a year after you posted this) Though my puppy might be born tomorrow(!!) so he won't be coming home for a couple of months still. I'm so so so excited and happy and I'm also very nervous. Like you described, for me this is my first puppy all on my own and although I grew up my whole life with large breed dogs (100+ lbs, athletic etc) this will be my first Doberman. I've done a lot of research and was serious with my approach to finding the breed I think will be the best fit for me, but I expect raising a puppy to be stressful and exhausting, so trying to learn and prepare all I can ahead of time so that we are set up for great success together. Hope your first year with your baby girl has been wonderful, all the best ❤️
Perfect information. Dobermans are the best way to show human kind and teach patience. They are built more human like. True friends. Took my daisy to the park today. Toddler's
Toddler's, parents, and children are amazed by her love. That is the raising. Dobies require 90% love, actual verbal communication/affection. 10 % is what they are meant to do based on breed. The later is not even a training thing. They will protect you and your young ones regardless. The work is always loving and teaching your dobie at home. Dobermans are the most worth while challenge. Not for all. Dobermans are not lazy.
Can u do a Doberman grooming video for eg, at what age we should give it a bath and grooming their coat, brushing etc it would be helpful and at what age should we remove the taping in their ears
Especially work lots with regular nail trims! I recommend dremel. I had a red male Dobe and he would lay on his back in your lap and get pampered! We started him as a pup! My 5 year old wasn't brought up that way and won't let anyone but the vet near her toes🙄
Thank You for this video, just bought a 2 months old Doberman female puppy. New journey of my life with Doberman has just began. Excited for this ride...
Thanks man! Yeah Arlo is growing fast. I totally agree, they're incredibly smart and just want to please. That's most of it right there! Then you just need to get past the occasional stubbornness... Haha. So nice to see you in the comments again Alpha.
Im onto my 3rd doberman and my auntie has been breeding them for 40 years but i really like how calm and comfortable u train them. It has been a great help to me and my doberman Pablo. Thank you mate
great video! Just lost our 12 year old female a couple weeks ago but brought home a new female 6 weeks ago and honestly I needed kinda a review on how I need to do things. After a dozen years with a perfectly trained and temperd Dobe I realize how spoiled we were LOL these puppies aer crazy!
i love to have a dobermann but im a university student and for now living with my parents and dont have enough space for a dog… but im crazy about this dog the way he looks at his owner 😍😍😍
Going back and rewatching some of these videos. It's crazy how everytime I do I seem to catch something cool I missed the first time around. Also every single time it makes me want to play with my doberman!!
THANK YOU!! We are scheduled to get our puppy from a litter in Sept 2023 so I'm starting to gather all the knowledge that I can to be the best owner! I definitely want to start working with our puppy right away. I'm about to check out more of your videos!
Thank you for posting this!! I’m trying to become a Doberman owner and wanted to properly educate myself with training (as professional can pretty expensive). I’ll be new to owning a pet as an adult and understand the work that comes behind it. But I know all of them are different, and this helps greatly!
This was really helpful, I'm 15 and my doberman is 2 years old and it's been hard to train him sense he's older and slightly bigger than me. This really helped me in getting him better trained. Thank you!
Yeah man, I love your passion and super sensible ways. I’ve known dobies all my life and just adore them. You have your dogs so sussed and sorted out. Happy calm beasts who know exactly where they are at. Wonderful to see. It’s 99,99% the owner’s attitude.
The more videos I watch the more I love these guys. my neighbor had one a few years ago and he was a gentle giant but also viciously protected the house from robbers (we lived in a sketchy area)
I am planning on it but for various reasons it may not be something I will put on my RUclips channel. It'll probably have to go on my own website. I'll announce it to my newsletter subscribers first so jump on that list if you're interested! www.dobermanplanet.com/newsletter/
We're planning to get a Doberman as our first pet. I greatly appreciate your videos as we prep for our puppy. We're about to check out a breeder in a couple of weeks so I might be asking you questions about being a Doberman owner.
Love this. I used all with my Dobie. I used "Don't Touch" then "take it". Also " Take a Break" for release but all similar to yours. My Dobie were so easy to train. They want to please. Best breed.
Another superb video which is super helpful we are getting our American Doberman in five weeks and feel significantly more confident with all of your videos including house training and the commands.I tell everybody how good your site is and love watching all of the videos they are always helpful!
Thank you so much Steven, that means so much. Seriously. Knowing that I have helped even one person to feel more confident gives me a burst of energy and makes me want to make a better video next time! So thank you!
Now my Doberman is 3 years old, when he was a puppy it was pretty challenging to train him. I followed the same method, as you had shown. Now, he understands 95% whatever I speak😂😂
Your videos are great. They teach us a lot of things. I also have a Doberman puppy 7 months old... Im trying all of your tips and tricks on her. And she's learning very fast. Thank you. Keep posting this videos to know us more and more.
Thank you so much for the awesome video! I got my first Doberman puppy recently and this made me feel a lot better about the training process. It’s like he’s my first child, I don’t wanna mess him up 😅 You, sir, have earned a well deserved new subscriber!
Thanks Sid! You'll get there! Use it as a goal to get you to where you want to be. Sounds funny... but owning a Doberman was my motivation to save up and buy my first house with a yard! Haha.
We have a 6-year old female doberman and LOVE your videos! We started with the same base of training in this video when she was a puppy and put her through many rounds of obedience classes, including the last advanced class which was off leash using an e-collar. What are your thoughts on e-collar training? She is very smart but when we go for rides, she barks at bicycles so when we put the collar on her, it basically stops that behavior (with just a simple audible "beep" on the collar). Also, we live out in the country so we go for walks in the woods and the collar has saved her from being quilled by a porcupine, again with a simple beep on the collar. We like the collar because it allows her some freedom, while also allowing us to still have a "virtual" leash on her to keep her in check and safe at the same time.
Hi mate ive had 2 doberman so far. Ive just got a new pup and i know how to train them but your style and input is very helpful. Thank you.. Dobers for life mate
I love this video!! I have 5 Dobermans, ranging from 3 yrs to 17 weeks. This is phenomenal information that I look forward to using this to train my dogs!
I’ve had dogs all my life and I’ve lived in the house with one Doberman and fell in love with the breed! 😮😅 I feel like your video was a clear, succinct beginner course to help people that are looking to get/adopt a Dobie. I’m getting two/hopefully littermates in the near future, and can’t wait to train them together! Keep bringing the info. I’m sure I’ll be looking and learning from you!
This is the best video I've seen for helping to train mine and my husbands Doberman. We especially liked that you showed the example as well as talking about it. I guess we needed the visual cue too 😂
Hello from Virginia! I loved the download segment in the beginning! So I have a 5 year old Dobe that didn't know how to walk on a lead when I first adopted her. She was fun to train and a fast learner. Consistency is key here. Fortunately she is treat driven! I like to move in the direction I want her to 'come' to. When she sees me act quickly she gets up fast! Like last night when we were sitting on the front porch and a skunk waddled quickly around the corner. I saw it before she did and jumped up and went for the door and commanded, "come". She moved fast and was none the wiser.🦨😳🤪
Hi Piper! Good to see you in the comments again! That's a great point about moving in the direction. That's one of the more in-depth things I would have loved to mention but this video was already up to 15 minutes.. haha. So I had to breeze over everything. I'm really glad you mentioned it here for people as something else to try. Oh man, so glad your dog didn't get sprayed!
Language is truly love between dobby and family... If words are repeated enough. French, English, German... It's about trust love. My Quinn is multi lingual,lol... Trully.. It's about eye, hand, body, tonality. She's is my heart, as our all my dogs. There as loving as shown love.... There are no bad animals, children... Just bad owners, parents. 💕
Wow, your videos are really great! I am thinking of getting a Doberman after having two Rat Terriers! Your videos are making my decision very easy! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
This is very helpful me and my partner just adopted a 3year old doberman shes had a hard life so we basically have to star from the beginning with her......!
I have two boys (75 Dobe/25 Catahoula)from the same litter, 12 weeks and they have sit, paw, release, other paw, and potty training down already. Got them at 8 weeks. These are very smart dogs. I would recommend getting siblings it does make a lot of things easier like the separation anxiety because they have each other but it does make the individual training more difficult because they distract each other constantly. I love that they tire each other out with mildly aggressive play throughout the day.
great vid. the leave it portion I normally get better results if the pup keeps its focus on you instead of allowing it to smell the treat. love the vid. love the pup. love the channel.
So glad! Yeah that energy will lead to them getting distracted SUPER easy. Try and wear him out with some exercise first, and then practice in a really boring environment.

great video! Just lost our 12 year old female a couple weeks ago but brought home a new female 6 weeks ago and honestly I needed kinda a review on how I need to do things. After a dozen years with a perfectly trained and temperd Dobe I realize how spoiled we were LOL these puppies aer crazy!
Cheers dude , the visual for the dog was a massive help
i love to have a dobermann but im a university student and for now living with my parents and dont have enough space for a dog… but im crazy about this dog the way he looks at his owner 😍😍😍
This helped me more than all of the videos I've ever tried.Thank you.😊
This was really helpful, I'm 15 and my doberman is 2 years old and it's been hard to train him sense he's older and slightly bigger than me. This really helped me in getting him better trained. Thank you!
Yeah man, I love your passion and super sensible ways. I’ve known dobies all my life and just adore them. You have your dogs so sussed and sorted out. Happy calm beasts who know exactly where they are at. Wonderful to see. It’s 99,99% the owner’s attitude.
the only way to praise all your dedication is by sharing your video, Keep up the good work !
That is a GREAT way. Thank you so much, really means a lot!
these videos help so much i just got 2 doberman
The more videos I watch the more I love these guys. my neighbor had one a few years ago and he was a gentle giant but also viciously protected the house from robbers (we lived in a sketchy area)
Can you do a ear taping video, this is soo important and hug in the world of dobermans as you well know.
Please, do it for me too
I am planning on it but for various reasons it may not be something I will put on my RUclips channel. It'll probably have to go on my own website. I'll announce it to my newsletter subscribers first so jump on that list if you're interested! www.dobermanplanet.com/newsletter/
This was very helpful. Make sure to keep this video up thank you !!
We're planning to get a Doberman as our first pet. I greatly appreciate your videos as we prep for our puppy. We're about to check out a breeder in a couple of weeks so I might be asking you questions about being a Doberman owner.
Thank you my dog is almost 5 months old and is following my commands sometimes. I really appreciate you.
Thank you ! I learned so much from watching your videos the past 2weeks . Getting our pup next week
Just got my Red and Rust Dobie this week. You're videos have been invaluable. Thank you so much 🙏
Now my Doberman is 3 years old, when he was a puppy it was pretty challenging to train him. I followed the same method, as you had shown. Now, he understands 95% whatever I speak😂😂
Great video , I can't wait to see what happens when I try it at home this afternoon
Thank you I needed this we just got a new Doberman puppy about a week ago now and now I have a better idea on how i’m going to train her
Another useful recording. Thank you
Your videos are great. They teach us a lot of things. I also have a Doberman puppy 7 months old... Im trying all of your tips and tricks on her. And she's learning very fast. Thank you. Keep posting this videos to know us more and more.
I am learning so much from you and making me love Doberman and all dogs
Thank you so much for the awesome video! I got my first Doberman puppy recently and this made me feel a lot better about the training process. It’s like he’s my first child, I don’t wanna mess him up 😅 You, sir, have earned a well deserved new subscriber!
Thanks for adding in the visual examples !
This is by far the best dog channel I ever stumbled upon.
Keep making good quality content, man.
Omg ai always forward more than 1/2 of these videos...90% of it is blah blah blah
Thank you soo much for this video....I get my pair of Doberman puppies next month
Huge fan, hope to own one in the future!!!
you must have alot of time and accept to sleep less, but that the perfect breed by far ( money can also be a problem )
@@6700adam if they're on this channel they're probably doing the necessary research unlike the impulse buyers
@@titanhound6671 good point
Same
Thanks Sid! You'll get there! Use it as a goal to get you to where you want to be. Sounds funny... but owning a Doberman was my motivation to save up and buy my first house with a yard! Haha.
You helped me alot your channel is amazing for doberman
Thank you this was very helpful ☺! I picking up my puppy today and I'm ready for basic training!!!!
The puppy is so cutee😍 his going to look amazing when his fully grown
Thank you Kadyn! I think so too! Can't wait to see him as an adult.
Everything in this video was so helpful! Thanks for actually showing visual tools
Completely agree with what you are saying only thing I not sure on is I think the most important thing you can teach any dog is wait
Holy cow that must be a tremendous amount of work I have one that's almost 3 months and he runs me ragged LOL!
Great overview of how to train a puppy
One of the best videos
I’m getting a Doberman today and I am stoked!
Thank you for your help it worked perfect for my Dobie
I’ve had dogs all my life and I’ve lived in the house with one Doberman and fell in love with the breed! 😮😅 I feel like your video was a clear, succinct beginner course to help people that are looking to get/adopt a Dobie. I’m getting two/hopefully littermates in the near future, and can’t wait to train them together! Keep bringing the info. I’m sure I’ll be looking and learning from you!
This is the best video I've seen for helping to train mine and my husbands Doberman. We especially liked that you showed the example as well as talking about it. I guess we needed the visual cue too 😂
I enjoy watching your training
Thank you for sharing
Having a hard time till I go searching for my dog
It will be soon I pray
My last dobie had a weakness to chase skunks ! It never turned out well !! lol !
@@chrisberge1634 oh goodness!! What sport!!🙊🦨😳
John very good training video 👍, lots of us needed that, great job.
Thank you Ronnie! So glad you found it useful!!
The visual cue was huge in training my Doberman
Wow, your videos are really great! I am thinking of getting a Doberman after having two Rat Terriers! Your videos are making my decision very easy! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I’m getting a Doberman and this is very helpfull,
I'm glad I've find you watch I've been looking into getting my first dog :)
That visual cue note is 100% true. I was doing them not even knowing. Once I realized it, I use hand signals as a command for him
I’m so excited me and my family are getting a dobie this summer !!!
Congrats, that's so great to hear! You're going to love the breed! :-)
Awesome Video Brother!!! Cannot thank you enough for this Channel!!! 👏❤👍
Thanks for the great tips.
Great demo's, especially for anyone with young pups.
Thanks James! Yeah I'm hoping that seeing it makes it a bit easier to follow.
Love this video Thank you it will help me with my 10 week Doberman
So glad! That's a great age to get focused on some of this stuff!
Good advice Arlo is so smart seems to pick up things quickly.
This is soooooo helpfull not just for the doberman breed
I just got my 2 Doberman Pups 🐶 ❤️❤️❤️
Great very simple and work ..thank you
Thank you! My pup comes home June 4th will use this
That's awesome! Congratulations!
Loved this video! THANK YOU 🙏🏻 I have a 5 month old Doberman and these tips you’ve given with surely be helpful with her training ❤️
So glad to hear that Megen!!! Thank you for taking a minute to leave this comment. Much appreciated!
That was great! Just got a 10-week old Doberman yesterday.
A lot of good information, as well as the examples. Great video for sure!
Awesome video, thanks for the great advice
Excellent video! Thank you!
great vid. the leave it portion I normally get better results if the pup keeps its focus on you instead of allowing it to smell the treat. love the vid. love the pup. love the channel.
You are amazing and legit I am studying every bit of every video you post so that I can be prepared when we bring our baby home in a couple weeks
Thank you Natalie, that really means a lot. I'm so happy that I can be of some help for you. Congrats on your (soon to be) new baby. That's awesome!
This was helpful I have a 7 month old Doberman he is a struggle on command he is really energetic
So glad! Yeah that energy will lead to them getting distracted SUPER easy. Try and wear him out with some exercise first, and then practice in a really boring environment.
