I have always owned German Shepherd dogs. I would’ve never thought in a million years I would be sitting here watching your videos right next to my five year old male rescue Doberman. He is the most easy-going dog I have ever met in my life. I did not have small children, but if I did, I would not have any issues whatsoever allowing this dog around my children. He is a Velcro dog and I’ve never had a dog that really and truly wanted to be around me as much as he does. Unlike my German shepherds, he is a dream come true on a leash. He is so unfazed by any passing dogs or animals. He walks so proudly on the leash with his head held high. He is so chill, and I absolutely cannot believe anyone would abandon this amazing dog. I’m so blessed he came into my life. Seriously, I can’t believe he’s my dog!

Having raised Doberman puppies all my life, last year I adopted an adult male from a Doberman rescue. It was a no brainer for me, because I've slowed down and no longer have the farm and the acreage for a puppy to grow up with, and getting a 6+ year old was great for me. Because I'm very familiar with the breed, the medical issues he came with were not a deterrent as I've dealt with them before. One of the things you mentioned about not knowing the history is spot on. I discovered my dog doesn't like large groups of people, and he wants to make snacks out of little dogs, but he's great with my indoor cats. You really will find out things like this on your own usually, after you leave the shelter, so be prepared. Other than that, I won't be purchasing puppies to raise anymore. I will give a good home to seniors who like living with seniors now. 😀

The most important thing I now consider when thinking about getting another doberman is health. I can adapt to higher energy, either sex etc. My next dobe will be a male American/European mix that is show quality. Black and Rust appeals the most to me. Unless my female expires before my male. I'll always have 2 opposite sex. Until the day I die no matter my age. When I get too old to train I'll go the adult adoption route. My first one was 16 months old rescue. He was fabulous!! Ohhhh but the joy of raising that pup is work that made my bond deeper than theirs I'm sure.

Our first Doberman was an American show/pet. She was very reserved and calm. She did have the Doberman protection. There were several occasions where she went into DobieMode, as we called, she saved me from a stranger who came to our door and wanted to come in. She was having nothing to do with the guy even getting on the porch! I was so glad to have her. She was 14 when she passed. We currently have a 2 year old European male working dog. He is so full of energy and wants to play 24/7. People often ask which we preferred, all I can say they both are Dobermans with their own personalities.

He's a registered pet European American hybrid. The dad is European American 120lbs and mom is American 85lbs. Rambo is the biggest male in the litter. We're super excited to have him join our family. He'll be an indoor/outdoor dog. We live in the country so he'll get plenty of exercise in our fenced 1 acre area around the house. Our kids are both teenagers and we have two indoor cats. My parents bread and trained Dobermans when I was very young. They're really excited for us.

My doberman Heidi is an American female. Her and I have a strong bond with each other. She came to our ranch a year ago and she was in bad shape. She didn't trust nobody because she was seriously abused by her previous owner and it took me two weeks to earn her trust. But now she's just a big baby. And a house dog to boot.

Good video. I’ve had them since the 70’s. I’ve always had black and rust because of health issues that can go with having diluted colors. Back in the day I don’t remember even seeing reds and definitely not the others. Something you don’t bring up is eye color. Darker colored eyes, almost black, used to be the standard and indicated less dilution. I’ve had American, Euro, male, female, working, show, AKC pup and rescues and I think you’ve pretty much nailed that. The only thing I’d add is that the working dogs or Euros are really fearless. They are not as likely to be concerned with lightning, loud noises or fireworks. I’m an older adult. When I am needing another dog, I’ll likely get a rescue dog, female, American or Euro because I’ll get to meet them first and know what I’m getting. Females seem to be slightly more calm and the females we’ve had are definitely more attached to one person. Our large, intact, euro male can be trusted with all kids and even though he’s intact, he gets along with almost all dogs. Definitely more playful and has tons of energy. That said, we live in a farm so they all get tons of exercise. Just want to add that Dobermans didn’t used to have all the health issues they do today. I’ve been lucky, so far, and no Doberman related health issues. It may be their color plays a role, or exercise, or diet. And maybe just luck.
    Thanks for all the videos!

Well John this a wonderful video to support newbies to the Doberman breed. When it comes to choose working line vs pet/show line Dobermans you did not mention a specific characteristic with working line Dobermans. They not only have more drive and need more exercise or oppertunities for workout. What is really hard: they are 24/7 on guard, significantly more than pet or show line Dobermans. These Dobermans check and sense everything, everywhere and constantly. And if you not be aware of them they make their own decisions which are based on their breeding prupose being a personal guard dog.
So when you leave your homestead, property or flat you have to have a closer look on your dog. Working line Dobermans doing their job constantly, but you have to do your job as well - to supervise the dog in the same way. Believe me that's gona be hard sometimes.

We had the European Red/Blue Dobie boy but he passed last year in June at 12.5 yrs old from heart issues. We adopted him at 7 yrs old and with skin issues and we took care both his heart and skin issues and his skin got healed but his heart was the reasoned he passed at 12.5yrs old. Now we just adopted another European Dobie girl she's black & tan an AKC Certified working protection blood line dad and she's 1.8 yrs old. They have similarities in behavior with the red blue Dobie boy we had but also as your video said she's not as accepting right away with people than the boy Dobie. We're enjoyed our time with our previous Dobie boy and now we're learning and enjoying our black tan girl Dobie. Thanks for sharing your knowledge to many of us.

We had dobermans since i was like 6. All "working" type european ones. All were really cool with kids, even stranger ones. All protection trained but they "knew" when stranger was ok or not. So they didnt mind petting from kids from nearby school when we were going out with him. One was winning awards on contests , but they banned ones with cropped ears later.
Our last one just celebrated 13th birthday yesterday. And all considered exept some age related issues, he can still walk and is happy. ( half of his siblings are alive too, good line i guess).
When i get my own dog, dobie is sure choice. Once you get over puberty. I loved goofy, sometimes acting dumb but they were not, pragmatic dogs. Only thing (cant be mad) couldnt even go to bathroom alone. But you would look at them and seen the love they have.

Ziva is close to all of us, but I am her person. My male, Tony, will be 5 at the end of the year. His sire is American/ Chilean lines, his dam Chilean. His looks and temperament run right down the European lines, and he is typical male with the love and goofiness for all family members. I've had two black and rust males. The first passed away at six years old due to DCM (he was also a newspaper ad puppy / questionable bloodlines). The next one I had was from a fantastic breeder specializing in European Pride of Russia lines. Unfortunately, I had to leave him behind during a divorce. (I did end up fleeing with my Malinois tho). Long story. So, heartbroken, I never thought I'd have another doberman.
Then serendipitously this Spring, the same breeder reached out to me with a red and rust female pup that was the last remaining in that litter. I hadn't talked to her in years.
I couldn't resist. So to recap: two black and rust males and one red and rust female all from European working lines. I also have a German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois. Don't worry, I have a pet vacuum - and big yard. :-) Love your channel.

But if you’re purchasing them and taking them in at 3-4 months old then how can you possibly know what their personal.. (AHEM 🗣👊🏼)
DOGalnality is going to end up being??
I chose my last one from 5 remaining (him + 4 others) because when they all ran out to pee he
    A. Hiked his leg like a Manly Dog (at only 3 months old) instead of squatting like his 2 brothers (and of course 2 sisters)
    B. The other 4 immediately ran back in to the comfort of their bedding + cage while HE remained out in the grass exploring, sniffing etc
In hindsight reason B might’ve been a clue that I missed because as an adult he liked to sometimes take off at the drop of a hat and not listen to me telling him to get his ass back here. Fortunately I sought help and learned how to correct that behavior. He was the first Doberman I’d had that did that to the degree that he did it so it was unexpected.

Both with their own unique amazing qualities, although very much align with everything you stated. Here's what I would possibly add to your pick doberman card. How long are you wanting to wait to adopt and how much are you willing to spend? I say this because three weeks ago we almost got a third european black and rust male from the same breeder as Remy because one of their adopters had to back out and wanted to know if I wanted Remys brother. But since these dogs are in such high demand the prices are way up there to adopt especially from a tested bloodline. So we decided to stick with the two.

Great video, John! I think you made a lot of good points to help people choose the right Doberman for their lifestyle. I've had European Dobermans and an American European Hybrid in the past. Currently, I own a 2.5 years old black & rust male European working line Doberman. He is an amazing dog, but only because I put the work in (and still do every day). Very high drive, and he needs his 2-4 hours training and exercise every day. If, for whatever reason, it might be a little less, you immediately know it😅. We are training for IGP titles.

Oh fun! Training for IGP titles is no joke! Kudos to you both - he sounds like an amazing dog!

We have a,European brown & rust. He is, as you have described for the European, not sure, if he's show or working. I would like to a gene test. I think I would go for an American next time, maybe a show line, female.

I had excellent experience with my blk/tan American female pet Dobie. Will definitely get that again. She was good with the entire family, especially the little kids, but was decidedly my girl. I'm hoping to train the new dog as my PTSD service dog, and we have a farm, now, so definitely a puppy to ensure socialization with both people and animals.

In another of your videos you discussed adult dobermans not adapting/accepting new owners because of strong loyalty. Is this a common difficulty in adopting adult dobermans from rescue groups?

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  3 месяца назад

No, Dobermans are very smart. When they are in a kennel for weeks or months on end with no individualized attention, they are typically very thankful to the person who rescues them, plays with them, and spends time with them.

Everything matches yours except I would probably get an adult. This is my second marriage and neither husband has ever wanted a Doby. So it would be my first as well. And I think he would be easier to convince if he could see the personally already there, plus knowing he wouldn't be the one having to deal with the puppy training (piddles). Since I'm the one gone for 12 hours at night then trying to sleep all day.

Sounds like a bad time to add a high drive Velcro dog, sadly. Especially if your hubby doesn't want one, AND will have to care for it the majority of the time.

Ya I know. Plus right now we already have 3 dogs. So I wouldn't even consider it until we are down to not more than one left probably none thou. But I can always dream. Right now we have a mal-heeler mix. And her son is that and half cessie plus a beagle.

This was a great video! We love our Red and Rust doberman. Luckily, we chose the right dog for our family from Doberman of the Triad rescue organization. Our next doberman would be black and rust, European, male, puppy working dog. We are an active family, and enjoy training and working with our dog

Our beautiful girl is an American Doberman mix but I don’t know if she’s working or show as she’s adopted. If you looked at her, you’d never know she wasn’t a full Doberman aside from her size. Though she’s about to turn 2 years old, she looks like a six month old puppy.

Have two Doberman ‘s European as live in the uk. My boy is chocolate and weighs 33kg, very sensitive, tuned into both myself and husband. But when out walking he is very much my protector, as very uncertain when men come along path towards me. Protective. My female is Black and Tan, she is 42kg and a very happy dog, friendly with everyone, but very mischievous.

I would have the same doberman as you, only female! Because of our cats we need a puppy. Our beloved Lady passed four months short of her 12th birthday, a year ago April 29th. So we are now at a stage in our grief where we can move on to our next doberman. Wish us luck! This was an awesome and informative video. Thank you so much!
