I remember taping this from AM radio decades ago and listening to it over and over again. I couldn't remember the name of the comedian, I knew it wasn't Alan Sherman but I kept thinking it was Shelly Berman but Berman didn't sing. Finally a light went off and I googled, "While we stand here waiting, for the ballgame to start" and wham-o! Here I am. I never knew this was Albert Brooks. Somewhere in one of my videos I sang, "3,000 miles from coast-to-coast, every citizen has reason to boast." Of course the five people who watched the video didn't get the joke. >.< Thanks for posting this.
Same story here. Heard it on the in-flight entertainment of an American Airlines flight during a trip to the US way back in 1998. Twenty years later Google brings me here. Never realized it was Albert Brooks, still as funny as I remember it.
I used to tape on an old reel to reel recorder, right off a portable radio! Super Hi-Fidelity, ha! ...I thought I had heard it on Dr. Demento's show, but it might have been that other novelty show on (?) KPFK. I'd be singing those lines the same way, for years and years.... He also did this bit on the Flip Wilson show, which I think I saw, we loved that program...
Genius! Thanks for posting!! HAL! HAL!! HAL CARTER!!!! I'VE LIVED THE LAST 75 YEARS IN MICHIGAN!!! I'M 75 YEARS OLD!!!! While we stand here waiting ... for the ballgame to start ..."
+Mike Schaefer My pleasure! this one still makes me crack up every time I hear it. Dr. Demento taught me. The live filmed version (I think from the Flip Wilson show) is on youtube and great too, but this version is best!
Laughed so hard the entire way through! Not a single cuss word or pee, poop or fart joke. How I miss real comedy from real comedians. Thank you for posting this ❤️.
A bunch of we nerdy types in high school used to listen to Weird Al on Sunday night and compare notes next day!! One of our favorites was, "As we stand here waiting, For the ball game to start". Love this entire bit!!✝️⚜️
I saw Albert Brooks perform this on The Flip Wilson Show in the early 70s!!! He was wonderful. So glad I found this. It's amazing how the more things change, the more they remain the same, whether it's "YOU JAIL ALL YOUR BLACKS" or the obnoxiousness of the laid-back Portland hipster.
I saw him back then on the show and totally remember the skit. I think it was even longer than this version, with more auditioners. Brooks was great, changing his persona for each aspiring song writer.
Yeah, I have the version he did on Flip Wilson on a reel to reel audio tape & it was a bit longer and even better. Never forgot it & periodically look to see if anyone has posted the video.
yes, Flip! you should be able to find it here. I'm more familiar with this (album) version, so that's why I posted. funny, I thought the Flip version was shorter.
Grew up with this one. Love it!
I strolled into The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach one night in 1974 , Albert was on Stage , doing THIS BIT LIVE ,
That's awesome!
My most favorite of all his routines, and he’s had so many!

This is the first time I've heard it without a rifle firing at the end.
Thanks for posting. One of the funniest bits of all time.

Thank you so much for uploading this. I heard it in middle school on Dr Demento and I've been looking for it ever since!
I used to play this on my KFJC radio show - usually on the Fourth of July.
My dad and I listen and say it verbatim and laugh like it’s the first time hearing it. Classic

CLASS comedy. It's featured on Rhino's "But Seriously" comedy box set.
Still BRILLIANT!

The Portland guy isn’t a “hipster;” he’s a Vegas lounge singer.
Classic routine from an underrated comedian.
* Albert Brooks made any 1970s appearance on Tonight Show must see TV! ☺
His real name is really Albert Einstein - really! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Brooks

A great album! Comes with a script so that you can do a bit!
Albert Brooks Voice Of Mariln
"I'm from a place I call Portland"
Hilarious!
Is there a filmed version of this?
THere's a version where he performed it on Flip Wilson Show ☺
