It's absolutely beautiful and although I don't understand a single word, the song moves me deep inside. I came across RUNRIG on a Christmas Eve back in the 80s. The very first song I listened to is famous ALBA - Scotland. I instantly fell in love with RUNRIG and so this music became a true companion throughout my moods. My personal highlight was seeing them playing live in the mid-90s. I'm German and still dreaming of visiting Scotland with all it's treasures. A proud land and home for proud people❤
Faileas air an Àirigh (shadow on the shieling) doesn't directly translate into English, I think, since shieling is a Scots term for a shepherd's shelter or a hut used in remote areas up in the hills. The Scottish Borders town Galashiels gets its name from the term.
They make you so proud to be Scottish. Keeping the Gaelic language alive (Faileas Air An Airigh) Shadows on the air. Beautiful song and tune, could be a national anthem.
There is something very very special about this band...... the music, the feel, the vibe, the sweet melody & tempo... They have a deeply spiritual edge that make them one in a million!
But it's not all sad, I mean they've surely passed things over to great bands like Mánran :) I like to think anyway and have done their purpose I think.
I am sitting with the headphones on listening to this most beautiful of songs absolutely nothing worth watching on TV what better way to spend the night than listening my favourite band of all time
Stanley Birch This is one of their best to! The piano is killing me! I love it so much... Amazing... RUNRIG IS NOTHING SHORT OF SUPERB! Is this what heavenly choirs are like, I wonder...? BEAUTIFUL ❤❤❤❤
my good bye song to my 90 harris mom living in nz waiting to pass on upstairs into the stars as a big thanks for walking me as a little fella with such unconditional love.....as a 60 living between baltimore and nz have had 4 quality visits to the highlands from 23 to 58 I will always be and will pass on as highlander and therefore thank you... ufo..... 4 ........... 2nd sight..... RUNRIG!
Love this as a English man just started to listen to the group an I'm gutted I've not heard of this group before 80s was my era like big country and simple minds an deacon blue how did I miss this group 😢
La Scozia ci sono stato solo una volta, la adoro è più bel paese del mondo in quella terra vive il Grande Spirito , se rinasceró vorrei esserlo fra le braccia bagnate delle sue Highlands.
As a resident of the USA, if I hadn't taken a Rabbies Trail Burners tour of the Highlands of Scotland, I probably might never have heard of Runrig. But the tour guide guy, Fred Stewart, made Runrig the music he mostly played. I simultaneously fell in love with Scotland, especially the Hielands, and Runrig.
How good is that, it stirs the blood & the blood is strong. God I love our Highland Gaelic language, it is adorable, our link with our ancestors, our golden thread.
Aye kind of what Siol Ghoraidh's all about, like the fact you could be walking over the same land your very own ancestors (symbolically or even practically) could have been walking over.
There's a shadow on the sheiling A shadow on the sheiling The ship is waiting at the head of the bay Early on a May morning The sun of our memory is rising The sun of our memory is rising Walking the streets of foreign countries And the cities of another era The evening is calm and the skies are warm The sun is in the west, a great ball of gold The ocean is like a mirror, blue without blemish And great is my desire to be in Uist with you We will lift up our voices We will lift up our voices Although I am now so far from you We will never sever
The choir sent chills down my spine and put a lump in my throat. No idea what the guy is saying but it is some powerful stuff, I can tell by their passion.
Rory MacDonald co founder with his brother literally behind him percussionist is Calum MacDonald back in 1973 founded Runrig quite by accident sort of (back then the Run-Rig Dance Band, the name or whatever Run Rig being a farming method in the Highlands).
Can somebody post English lyric here so we can really understand this wonderful song. I have it on replay all day. It has inspired two poems in me today Slan Runrig

I don't know what you're saying there, apart from 'wow' :-) What they sing is, "We will raise our song on high (x2), although I'm far away from you, we will never be separated".
Having been to Runrigs brilliant live performance at the Manchester Apollo recently and then buying Beat the Drum DVD followed by Day of Days DVD, I have only just discovered this beautiful tune. An Englishmen but I love hearing songs like this in Gaelic; it lifts the soul. I hope that they perform it live next year although I doubt it as they do not tow a Gaelic choir around with them. But just a lovely tune! And Runrig is exceptional. What other group performs only their own material?
@KleineZofe i cant understand all of it one of the verses i did catch though is"we will raise up our voices we will raise up our voices and though i am so far from you now, we will never sever."
The best album is searchlight. Mystic and the song with my brother,...den schönsten Arsch der Welt.... Gaby...ich träume schon seit vielen Jahren von Schottland. In my dreams I was a poor girl, lived in the near of a small village in a small House of stone. There was a small wooden bed with sheep skin . In the middle a pott,I only had one spoon , eine große Kelle! And a knife. The surrounding was beautiful. A small garden on the left side and a small lake on the right one. Green gras everywhere. Rocks with black Stones. And I could walk through a small path downstairs to the shallow water. There was no sand beach. Only DARK Stones. And Loch Ness Lake was Not far away. I lived in the lowlands. My boyfriend was Highlander. There were battles again between the clans and he promised me to come back. Every night over nearly 40 years I dreamt this dream till today. Waiting for my Highlander. Nessi seams to be a liopleudodon from ancient Times, I think. Run into the Light is also one of my favourite songs. Some day I intend to come to Scottland. Love your amazing songs very much. Stamping ground is also an album I love. It was my first one. Followed by proterra and Others. Greetings from Nuremberg, Germany. Would be great If you would write a letter to me to the following address: Gabriele Meyer Birkenstraße 8 D-90513 Zirndorf Lind.
"There is a shaddow on the beachhead" I believe is the translation. My Gaelic is rather second hand and southern. The lyrics seem to speak about people leaving the islands but always having a connection. Hope that helps.

Joseph Flanagan was wont to give a dram to his donkey Phil, to raise the pesky individual's mood as he put it. I did not condone this practice with Rainbow for my part, because I thought a dram was better put in a human than a donkey. I mean no offence to Rainbow of course, as I salute his hardiness and humour in facing the rain lashing down like water without whisky, from the breath of the mighty Atlantic
Playing Runrig , while driving on single track roads in the Western Highlands . On a summers day . Nothing better .
It's absolutely beautiful and although I don't understand a single word, the song moves me deep inside. I came across RUNRIG on a Christmas Eve back in the 80s. Ich kann nicht beschreiben, was ich bei diesem Lied von Rory fühle.
I am so proud to be Scottish. This is fantastic music which everyone can appreciate.🏴
I am a Cameron from Scotland it tears me up i cant speak Gaelic but in the back my mind i understand
Never too late to learn, a chàirdean!
the lyrics to this are just so unbelievably moving
They make you so proud to be Scottish. Keeping the Gaelic language alive (Faileas Air An Airigh) Shadows on the air. Beautiful song and tune, could be a national anthem.
Amen!
I agree but could someone put the english lyric for us mortals to enjoy it more. Cmon Runrig fans do your bit
There is something very very special about this band...... the music, the feel, the vibe, the sweet melody & tempo... They have a deeply spiritual edge that make them one in a million!
They're sadly packing it all up next year, after 45 years.
But it's not all sad, I mean they've surely passed things over to great bands like Mánran :) I like to think anyway and have done their purpose I think.
This takes me back to my youth. I love Gaelic music and the Gaelic language and culture, although my background is wholly Welsh. Diolch am galon!
The best band in the whole world. Love them all so much💔

Means quite literally 'There's a shadow on the shieling' a Scottish roughly constructed hut for pasturing animals.

What an amazing version of this song .... !
As a highlander living in nz makes me smile and homesick
make it Sooner rather than later !
Me too, reminds me of Mull, been in NZ for nearly fifty years!!
Love this and it’s more special because i was there, one of my favourite Runrig concerts

Heartgripping song, brilliant performance. Especially enjoyed Rory's lush lead vocals and the bonnie choir...thanks for posting.
One of the prettiest songs ever.
On the sheiling is what it actually translates to.
Fantastic - beautiful song - really powerful stuff, Runrig are just fantastic!!!
Beautiful, first time hearing this song
Love this, My mums choir sang the backing vocals for the original recording.
Oh. Wow. I LOVE that song! It's my favourite song of Runrig's and that version is just....oh, so perfect! THANK YOU!
