Every day God shows me just how much He does love. We have a small farm. For several years I have been working to attract a rare duck (here in this part of Florida) called 'black bellied whistling duck. They began to arrive, slowly, two, four and then up to nine. A sight to see! but lately they seemed to have disappeared... until after coming home from Mass Sunday, my wife pointed out why... momma, poppa and NINE BABIES! I agree completely - I wish I could sit in the front pew at my own funeral and hear what those who knew me had to say - I would either comfort them, or haunt them!
Was 14 when my grandma passed away, now 20 and I still listen to this song all the time to remind me of all our memories, I can still hear her thick Irish accent when I think of her - she was the best. Hope everyone is having a good day :)
I've watched this film hundreds of times and never get sick of it.its the best film ever made❤i watched it with my dad he loved it too, sadly he died.our ancestors are from ireland.the music is beautiful ❤️
This was played at my dads funeral, and it shall always be a part of me, and so will he. Loved ones will always be with us as long as we remember them, and some times music is that portal that gives us some precious time with them............
Played at the funeral of my neighbor. Born Scot, served the british military in the aftermath of WW2, stayed since he found his love here in Germany. Twice my age.. but who cares. I raise my parting glass to you, my neighbor... my friend. Rest in Peace.
Rebecca D Sisk I just watched "Waking Ned Devine" again and listened to this song, again. Already told my daughters I want it for my funeral. I hope your father passed peacefully with loved ones around him. I hope your sorrow and pain ease with time. God bless you Rebecca.
hard to believe over 8 years ago my beloved father left the blue for the light.... Grateful for every minute I spent with him . I will 🌞 see you soon ....
Let me quote Waking Ned Devine: David Kelly was a great actor, but I don't ever remember the world giving him the appreciation he deserved. The words that are spoken at a funeral are spoken too late for the man that is dead. What wonderful memories he has given us.... When David grew old, he made the world younger, if he was here now, if he could hear what I say, I'd congratualate him on being a great actor, and thank him for all those moments he'd given us to cherish. R.I.P David Kelly
FunkyardDogg The LA "Times" is floating into obscurity. It's got good "credentials" but is officially a dying publication. However, it does cover "industry" news fairly well. It's not the New York "Tiimes," and never will be. The L.A. edition continues to lay-off good people.
My old man, rest his soul, used to always sing this at the end of a session. Only lost him last year and hearing this makes me think of him sitting with his eyes closed, belting out the words. Good memories to have of him. I'll always love this song just for that reason.
I heard this song for the first time tonight. I searched it on RUclips and scrolling through comments I found your lovely story. It reminds me of the great man my grand father was. he past last year also. may they both rest in peace
Every time I hear the line "Since it fell into my lot, that I should rise and you should not.", it makes me tear up. There is something so beautiful about the call answer of this song (the dead man singing and his comrades responding in harmony), that really hits you. I hope someone fills to me the parting glass when it is my time not to rise.
Pipers play this at our fallen brothers and sisters in blue in Washington, the precession is humbling. Then comes the buglers and drummer calls, amazing starts and it's all you can do. This song is just as powerful. I want it sung at my funeral! By a real Irishman, with the Gaelic and pipes...
We actually played this at my mothers funeral and I think I'll request it for mine. Maybe make it a family tradition. Its just so fitting for celebrating a life in one last raising of a glass for that persons memory.
As a spaniard that lived for six years in Dublin and having been invited to assist a baptism, a weeding, and a funeral, no jokes about it, found it amazingly surprised that the funeral was the most.... Don't know. It was the one that I cried the most, but the one that still remember, even the date. God bless
You passed away this/last night 15/5/24 Shane, you were a fantastic musician and a great friend, sadly taken too soon, 56 years young, rest in peace my friend Colin ❤🙏
My Irish grandfather passed yesterday, and we had a feast that night in celebration of his life. We told stories, played Irish music, and watched his favourite movie, Waking Ned Devine. ;_;
In respect of those who want to know what the first bit in Irish is of "The Parting Glass", all I can tell you is it is the poem "Forever in your debt" by Kirk Jones. "With thanks to those who blew the wind, And those who sailed the ship, We sailed it tight against the tide, And I shall be forever in your debt."
I loved this movie since I first watched it and this version of this song has had me obsessed with The Parting Glass since. I'm a little bit Irish from my biological father's side and listening to Irish music just connects me to my roots.
Just a beautiful song. I'm from Scotland but there's an affinity, culture, history that us Celts share that will go on forever and ever. Try visiting both our countries and driving down a one way street, you'll be waving forever. So thankful that I speak a bit of the Gaelic although chan eil fileanta, amazing its been passed down. So proud to be a Celt.
One year ago my last grandma past away. As a true Irishman I drank. For all my grandparents I raise my glass. And just know that I miss you all so damn much. For Nana, Papa Ted, Papa Bob, and Patsy Gram.
David Kelly made me understand how much the seasoned and experienced actors brought to the movie experience... I was also deeply saddened when I found out that Ian Bannen died much too soon... his portrayals of great archetypes in Hope and Glory and Waking Ned Devine are at the top of my all-time favorite characters. I can only hope that I will age gracefully and be as colorful as David Kelly and Ian Bannen...

i'm here thankfully not because my family lost somebody, but just because i find this song bloody beautiful. my condolences to anyone who lost a loved one.
I love this song. My great grandfather served in WWI near the end of the war and in WWII he lost his hearing from a cannon in his left ear. I'm glad I got to know him. Despite my young age I remember this song at his funeral my uncles and grandfather singing it. Really makes me wish I had gotten to know him more
First heard this many years ago and to this day, it moves me greatly. Some of the lyrics recall my own journey. I hope in my life, I've loved without caution and given without tabulating costs. That said, I believe I'll pour a glass of Jameson's... and look heavenward and toast my daughter. You made it before me and I will thank God every day for the joy your life brought me. Did you know you now have a granddaughter? She's beautiful too.
I've listened to this song I can't tell you how many times. I've seen your top comment but this is the first time that I've come across this one. I don't imagine that you're with us any longer. If you are, I want you to know that I hope you're doing well. Cheers
Put me in cardboard and bury me in a ditch alongside a country road. I want the biggest expense at my funeral to be whisky, with everyone drunk and howling this tune.
@deafficate Your comment is 10 years old. However I just read it. Your words inspired these lyrics (hopefully you haven't corked it and are able to read them) enjoy!: O Stuff me in a cardboard box Bury me in a ditch The biggest cost at my funeral Will be whiskey for your itch May your ears turn to arseholes May you get what you deserve May you watch me fall while you think on How I got on all your nerves So it's hey ho hey for my parting day Hey ho hey for a while Hey ho hey for the debts I owe and that thought makes me smile Dead but not forgotten And though I might be rotten Just recall that it's all for naught I'll sink right to the bottom Drink your drink whilst on your stool Then fall from off your chair We come back round again ya fool Never shed for me a tear So it's hey ho hey for my parting day Hey ho hey for a while Hey ho hey for the debts I owe and that thought makes me smile Such a shameful way and mournful day to leave this world alive Let it all pass by and ne'er cry Or look back with hateful eyes That's it I'm sunk, and the service is done The crow has cawd it's caw Curse me not in years to come Or else I'll haunt your sock drawer So it's hey ho hey for my parting day Hey ho hey for a while Hey ho hey for the debts I owe and that thought makes me smile O Stuff me in a cardboard box Bury me in a ditch The biggest cost at my funeral Will be whiskey for your itch
There is NOTHING AT ALL that gives more emotion in musical terms than an Uileann pipe with a sound similar to the wind! You are brought into a world of clouds, green, lakes and mountains.
I'm losing my dad today. He used to love this song. He would always tell me how he wanted us to remember him. To cremate him and spread his ashes on mountain and lake, with a glass of wine and a glass of whisky. I miss you, dad. I miss you so much.
Hi! Back 12 years later! Strange how time passes. Hope all who come here are doing well, I am and the tin whistle helps me! The tin whistle is my friend. I've been playing this great song countless times, made people happy now and then who heard me. I played on an Oak brand and now finally getting one a step better, a Dixon DX006D. a high D. Hearing this beautiful version with this movie really has had a big effect on me. Thanks FunkyardDogg.
my great grandfather was sent "over the top" while this song was played on the bagpipes in the trench. Last song he heard before he was executed by a german soldier. Hold no grudge. Great song!
Gerard Scullion I'm sure a million angels saluted him as he walked towards the Lord of Hosts, to be dismissed with honors, and meet again old comrades and sweethearts God bless you and your family Greetings from México
I'm sitting here easter morning, a bottle of vodka by my side, just having said goodbye to an old friend, I've got tears down my face and I'm def tipsy if not yet drunk, but I cannot help but smile every time I hear those opening bagpipes. I know this is a song that is supposed to be sad, but I can't help but feel its really celebrating all the good times you've had with someone; so drink up smile, those good times may be gone but that dosnt mean good times aren't gonna come either, and whatever has happened dosnt make those past times any less fond!
stalingrad I’ll raise my glass to all the heroes who stood their ground and held the flame of hope and enlightment in these time of darkness. Thanks to them we haven’t had to see these time rise again. Let them never be forgotten.
Here's to a Long Life, and a Merry one. To a Quick Death, and an easy one. To a Pretty Girl, and an Honest one. And to a Stiff Whiskey, and another one. Sláinte Mhath
I raise a glass to my father, still here. A Korean War and Vietnam Vet. And to his brother who served on the USS Fletcher at Guadalcanal when the outcome was uncertain.
To my grandpa. He’s been gone three years and I’m just now mourning. This song is a balm, even though it breaks my heart to listen to it. Fly high, grandpa. Good night and joy be to you.
You know guys, I'm from Chile, South America. And I have to say that this melody it's just amazing, the best I've ever listened to. And also the meaning behind the lyrics of the song, they're just perfect.
Timelessly beautiful. I haven't listened to this in a while, but the strong connection my heart has to the Celtic countries returns immediately when I hear this. Here's to Ireland! 🍻 Àlainn thar tomhais. Cha do dh'èist mi ri seo fad greis, ach thig dàimh làidir mo chridhe ris na dùthchannan Ceilteach air ais sa bhad nuair a chluinneas mi e. Èirinn gu bràth! 🍻
I had this version played at the funeral of my beloved husband, and it really fit him, and the relationships he had with his many friends, men and women. This is the best rendition of this piece EVER, including the recitation at the start. We miss you, Nat.
I'm half-Irish (both my parents are half-Irish, half-English) and we listen to a lot of Irish music. I was quite surprised when I heard this for the first time a few a months ago, because I'd never heard it before. Such a brilliant song!
Great tribute to your Dad. What a great man. He is not dead but alive with God. I thank him for bring you into the world to make it a better place. You are a true warror who fights for freedom. Your Dad stands watch over you in heaven. Keep him proud to be Irish.
There is the tribe who left and the tribe who stayed. as one of the ones who left many ages removed when i hear your uileann pipes i weep tears of longing and joy i've been blessed enough to tred from gundalk, to Down Donegal to Dublin, you have received me with love, perhaps more than my own family. Thank you my crazy, wild cousins and brothers across the pond. Should we meet past close in Killybegs, i'll scrape and fight for change to buy you a pint.
Alot of talk about Ed Sheeran's version, Which is understandable with Ed being a great singer and really making it into the big time but please remind this was a old Irish Folk song and no one in the world sing's this better than the Irish, The passion makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, The bagpipes are haunting yet beautiful. A true classic song. Good and Joy be to you all - God bless
A couple of friends of my Dad passed within 2 weeks of each other: Jermon Jackson and Kent Sanborn. I dedicated this song to them. I can't listen to it without crying 😢.
my grandmother passed away this week. She was an Irish girl and when I listened to this song again.... I cried. I needed to. This song is going in the tribute video we are making for her wake.... Thanks for posting it.
I had listened to Ed Sheeran's album about a thousand times and suddenly one day at Starbucks around St. Patrick's day, I heard this song and it made me happy to know that Ed keeps his influences with him!

Sorry to hear, It's a beautiful song to play at a good mans funeral though. Again, sorry for your loss
Nicolas Horvath Sorry to hear that, he did a good job serving his country. May god be with him.

Excellent song for the passing of a hero.
I'm sure he was worthy of such an honor. Kind of want to have it played at my funeral, though I'm not Irish.

Just so beautiful with thanks and love from little Israel !!!
i'm here thankfully not because my family lost somebody, but just because i find this song bloody beautiful. my condolences to anyone who lost a loved one.
I love this song. My great grandfather served in WWI near the end of the war and in WWII he lost his hearing from a cannon in his left ear. I'm glad I got to know him. Despite my young age I remember this song at his funeral my uncles and grandfather singing it. Really makes me wish I had gotten to know him more
I end up crying every time I hear this song.
Me too. It’s just way too much.
Cheers

Make it a tullamore dew and I’ll join ya
Put me in cardboard and bury me in a ditch alongside a country road. I want the biggest expense at my funeral to be whisky, with everyone drunk and howling this tune.
I agree
@deafficate
Your comment is 10 years old. However I just read it. Your words inspired these lyrics (hopefully you haven't corked it and are able to read them) enjoy!:
O Stuff me in a cardboard box
Bury me in a ditch
The biggest cost at my funeral
Will be whiskey for your itch
May your ears turn to arseholes
May you get what you deserve
May you watch me fall while you think on
How I got on all your nerves
So it's hey ho hey for my parting day
Hey ho hey for a while
Hey ho hey for the debts I owe
and that thought makes me smile
Dead but not forgotten
And though I might be rotten
Just recall that it's all for naught
I'll sink right to the bottom
Drink your drink whilst on your stool
Then fall from off your chair
We come back round again ya fool
Never shed for me a tear
So it's hey ho hey for my parting day
Hey ho hey for a while
Hey ho hey for the debts I owe
and that thought makes me smile
Such a shameful way and mournful day to leave this world alive
Let it all pass by and ne'er cry
Or look back with hateful eyes
That's it I'm sunk, and the service is done
The crow has cawd it's caw
Curse me not in years to come
Or else I'll haunt your sock drawer
So it's hey ho hey for my parting day
Hey ho hey for a while
Hey ho hey for the debts I owe
and that thought makes me smile
O Stuff me in a cardboard box
Bury me in a ditch
The biggest cost at my funeral
Will be whiskey for your itch
This is another of those movies that is so under rated..good tunes too. So makes me want to visit Ireland too.
It was shot on the Isle of Man, not Ireland itself.
then add that place to the list too, lovely looking place
Don't wait too long.
There is NOTHING AT ALL that gives more emotion in musical terms than an Uileann pipe with a sound similar to the wind! You are brought into a world of clouds, green, lakes and mountains.
I agree.
Needless to say. Thanks for your thought
in literal tears rn. this is to be played at my grandmas funeral whenever that may be. we are an Irish family and this song means so much
One of the best 'little' movies ever!
Good bye dad only thing I can say is we’re happy u were a strong dad u will be missed platt forever ☘️
This song never fails to bring tears to my eyes
I want the parting glass played at my funeral
We played it at my dad's funeral, it is perfect.
John Hagan requiescat in pace
Played this at my grandmas funeral and I miss her so much, may god be with her!!
We end all of our monthly Celtic music sessions here in NC with that tune!!
Tom Netsel where in NC are you?
I’m looking to move there in 2020 and being Irish am looking for good places and Irish areas and groups to enjoy.
my great grandfather was sent "over the top" while this song was played on the bagpipes in the trench. Last song he heard before he was executed by a german soldier. Hold no grudge. Great song!
Gerard Scullion I'm sure a million angels saluted him as he walked towards the Lord of Hosts, to be dismissed with honors, and meet again old comrades and sweethearts
God bless you and your family
Greetings from México
I'm sitting here easter morning, a bottle of vodka by my side, just having said goodbye to an old friend, I've got tears down my face and I'm def tipsy if not yet drunk, but I cannot help but smile every time I hear those opening bagpipes. I know this is a song that is supposed to be sad, but I can't help but feel its really celebrating all the good times you've had with someone; so drink up smile, those good times may be gone but that dosnt mean good times aren't gonna come either, and whatever has happened dosnt make those past times any less fond!
I've hit the "like button" a thousand times. But sadly, it has only counted once.
It's more melancholy than sad, as it should be.
I want this played at my memorial service when I go ....... wow, I'm in tears.
You still here
No words for this song. It can be song, can be listen with your eyes closed, all the same. It's the felling for someone gone. God bless those gone.
This pulls at every fibre of my Irish heart!!
Sláinte!
Have a drink Lad. Go sit behind a pint.

+KYLE REESE There are many, many versions of it as well!

I'll raise a glass of whiskey to that Irishman of 89 years who stood his ground in WW2 at a time when darkness overwhelmed us. Sláinte.
God save Ireland, may it one day be one country again
stalingrad
I’ll raise my glass to all the heroes who stood their ground and held the flame of hope and enlightment in these time of darkness.
Sláintè!
To my grandpa. He’s been gone three years and I’m just now mourning. This song is a balm, even though it breaks my heart to listen to it. Fly high, grandpa. Good night and joy be to you.
Waking Ned divine brought me here. Great movie for anyone who hasn't seen it
You know guys, I'm from Chile, South America. And I have to say that this melody it's just amazing, the best I've ever listened to. And also the meaning behind the lyrics of the song, they're just perfect.
Paredes, es musica celta y tu apellido lo es, esto viene de nuestros ancestros..saludos de Argentina
Timelessly beautiful. I haven't listened to this in a while, but the strong connection my heart has to the Celtic countries returns immediately when I hear this. Here's to Ireland! 🍻
Àlainn thar tomhais.
My dad watches this movie all the time. And sings it all the time and tells me story's about his ancestors and the great times he had in Ireland
I'm half-Irish (both my parents are half-Irish, half-English) and we listen to a lot of Irish music. I was quite surprised when I heard this for the first time a few a months ago, because I'd never heard it before. Such a brilliant song!
Anytime I get a bit home sick I like to hear this one, yes it's a goodbye, but it's always a hello to Ireland's special special love
This is one of those tunes that just stops you in your tracks. Just incredible.
Great tribute to your Dad. What a great man. He is not dead but alive with God. I thank him for bring you into the world to make it a better place. You are a true warror who fights for freedom. Your Dad stands watch over you in heaven. Keep him proud to be Irish.
I'm fron Macedonia and I like this song
Chers to you Irish broders and sisters
Every great movie deserves great music. Thank you Shaun Davey.
There is the tribe who left
and the tribe who stayed.
as one of the ones who left
many ages removed
when i hear your uileann pipes
i weep tears of longing and joy
i've been blessed enough to
tred from gundalk, to Down
Donegal to Dublin, you have
received me with love, perhaps
more than my own family.
Thank you my crazy, wild cousins
and brothers across the pond.
Should we meet past close in
Killybegs, i'll scrape and fight
for change to buy you a pint.
ChristianSiddhartha That is truly beautiful, Christian. I weep at the Uileann pipes myself.
ChristianSiddhartha I bet you would enjoy Garnet Rogers' "The Outside Track".
This is beautiful, thank you so much
Col. Edwin E. Kelly , my father, the greatest man that ever walked the earth. R.I.P.
Best version I've heard
A couple of friends of my Dad passed within 2 weeks of each other: Jermon Jackson and Kent Sanborn. I dedicated this song to them. I can't listen to it without crying 😢.
This song says something back to your family/friends. On my funeral ! One last glass !
An all time favorite film... an inspirational rendition of the "Parting Glass".... How could any one not like this...
The best version of this song and the one I want played at my funeral
my grandmother passed away this week. She was an Irish girl and when I listened to this song again.... I cried. I needed to. This song is going in the tribute video we are making for her wake.... Thanks for posting it.
beautiful ,I'm proud to be irish💚
It's hard for me to NOT cry, listening to this! It's from my favorite movie scene of all time!
best version of this song i have found yet. i want this song played at my funeral.
I had listened to Ed Sheeran's album about a thousand times and suddenly one day at Starbucks around St. Patrick's day, I heard this song and it made me happy to know that Ed keeps his influences with him!
My uncle Jack quoted this at my Uncle Franny's funeral...and he broke into tears as he read it. It's such a great farewell poem.
