    10.30pm NZ time, 22 Sept 2023.
My brother-in-law died recently. He was born in Ireland, but came to New Zealand with his family when he was 12 years old.
My 23 year old granddaughter said she'd like to sing at funeral. She found this song, The Parting Glass, learnt it in a few days, and sang it fantastically at the funeral.

    LYRICS:
Of all the money that e'er I had, I spent it in good company
And of all the harm that e'er I've done, alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit, to memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all
Of all the comrades that e'er I had, they're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, "Goodnight and joy be with you all!"
A man may drink and not be drunk, a man may fight and not be slain
A man may court a pretty girl and perhaps be welcomed back again
But since it has so ordered been by a time to rise and a time to fall
Come fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you all
Good night and joy be with you all

I'd played this video for him months before and he proclaimed "you can sing this; referring to my vocal register & encouraged me to learn it. He was 85 & we never once had a drink together & I finally did while we trusted that he was still in the room with us lingering. He knew that I would "kill to have this sweet tenor's voice." So happy that this lad and all the choir sang this song. Beautifully sung, sweet perfect voices
by the lad who sings it and perfect backing too.
Hope UCD choral society will produce more like this. Been a while since I commented on this but love the song and this version of it.

The most beautiful version of The Parting Glass that I've ever heard. Second is when the Scotty McFarlane character sings it in the Brothers and Sisters episode when they finally shut down the family business. Both are very moving.

"The Parting Glass" is a Scottish traditional song, often sung at the end of a gathering of friends. It was purportedly the most popular parting song sung in Scotland before Robert Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne". It has also long been sung in Ireland, enjoying considerable popularity to this day.
