Lucky you!!! I adore Runrig--especially the MacDonald brothers. Brilliant songwriters and musicians. A relatively new fan, I'm just beginning to distinguish Donnie's voice from Bruce's; in my humble opinion, they're both wonderfully gifted singers. Donnie's pure voice soars; Bruce's voice is earthy and gritty. But we mustn't overlook Rory--something about his voice tugs at my heart when he sings lead... Respect from an American lass!
I think what Run Rig shared with their music was a link with the culture they were brought up in. They made it cool to speak (Scots) Gaelic to lots of young people who used to think it was only a sign of backwardness. The pride they show with their music is something that everyone can aspire to - the only boundaries are what you let be put up. Alba Gu Brath!
I am Canadian of Scottish Highland ancestry and runrig is absolutely amazing I feel cheated we haven't heard of them sooner, payola is shit music, but runrig's music is timeless and fantastic or as I can say in Scottish Gaelic, Glay Glay Va!! I am thankful to almighty God for my Scottish origins, hello to all my Scottish brothers accross the sea.
Aye better late than never, didnt realise some things about my own ancestry until after Runrig split so.... lol oh well it happens haha. Finally realising the sort of enormity of what Siol Ghoraidh I think at least can be pretty overwhelming, like finally getting it (with a myriad of doing some research over the years and realising certain things its truly amazing!!!
I also have a very strong sense of the supernatural. Last night as I was consuming, I caught sight of Miriam O'Farrell outside on her porch and I thought to myself that I had seen her in another life. But then I remembered that it was actually the week before as she was selling carrots at the market.
AMEN, santiano42! Runrig's music is brilliant and universally appealing, transcending nationality, generations and politics! Love this song, this vid and this band... God bless Scotland and Runrig forever!
this song is pure heaven, I can imagine sitting on a cloud looking down to the earth below and remembering everything good that that life has to give, + it reminds me of an x girlfriend who I loved and should never have let go, This song is pure emotion.
I heard one of the lead singers is from Cape Breton Island, Canada. Anyone know? I think they are brilliant. And still going strong after all these years! Visited the Outer Hebrides a few years back. All the young people there really look up to these guys.
@@pauledwards5573 Pete Wishart who's an SNP (Scottish independence party) MP gave me free use of some lyrics for my book The Summer King. Such a sweetheart, I couldn't pay the huge sum - for me at the time - that his recording company was asking for. And Donnie was a Labour candidate & gave up the offer of a safe seat to almost win in his highland area. Great men all round!!!
I TOTALLY agree with you about Rory's voice. It's beautiful and heartfelt! I think he should do more of the lead vocals now, like he used to on their earlier gaelic albums. I think the MacDonald brothers make Runrig!
There's something about Gaelic and it's related languages that I just love. I can't speak it but the sound is musical in of itself. That bit with the drums around 3 min into the song sounds a bit like it's Native American.
Yeah Rory MacDonald has the best voice. It's beautiful and heartfelt! I think he should do more of the lead vocals now, like he used to on their earlier gaelic albums. I think the MacDonald brothers make Runrig! Does anyone know if they are married with families in Skye or what?
Hi all you scot' you have my respect. And you have all reason to be proude of your land. I'm very happy that our lovely Danish Royal family have got our two countries closer, when Mary was merried to crown prince Frederik. Even I'm from the northern part of Denmark, who has it's own flag (blue, with a green and orange cross)I'm trying to learn gaelic, it's diffelcult, but I'm getting better, with big help from Runrigs music. And the best of all, my sweetheart is scotish. ;-) Have a nice day. ;-)
I was to the Runrig concert yesterday in Frederikshavn (DK) And it hurt me a lot, that they only played one gaelic song. If that is their plan, I whish that Donnie was back in Runrig. Anyway it was a great concert. :-)
If you ever go to Skye the contrasts are spectacular! Start at Dunvegan and go to Armadale. Desolate to not sure how to say. Much more plant life. Runrig gives life to so many things! Just like the island itself!
Where have you been hiding Steven...lol Been following Runrig since the 80's, no other band comes close to them.... :-) I'm in this video, taken many years ago...lol Get well soon Malcolm, see ya soon pal... xxxxx
Thanks..I've been meaning to do that (when I've got the cash!) Yeh just got their dvd and on the extra bits it tells us Rory is married with 2 daughters and Calum has two daughters and one son. Great username bye the way, Siol Ghoraidh is my absolute favourite Runrig song!
Two lovely songs - I can't wait to get this DVD! (Typical human beings huh, chasing the unknown with guns and sticks... ah well!) I wish they'd come play Canada!!!!
I'm Scots as are all my family going back generations. Love all of Runrig's work, listened to it for years, but as I'm from the southwest (Ayrshire, although generations back from Argyll), was never exposed to gaelic / taught it at school. Does anybody know a good internet source of the english translations of Runrigs gaelic music as its kinda crazy that after all these years of appreciating their music I still struggle to grasp the lyrics of the gaelic songs ..
great band, i only knew runrig last year and since then i've been thinking to my self, where the hell have they been all this years? this is an old footage with Donnie Munro, just look at Calum with black hair... :)
Hi, Joanie--It's Debra, your "competition" for the MacDonald brothers, LOL! So you've also learned that they're taken--O whatever shall we do??? We'll always have RUclips (and our dreams!) ;D xxx
@saltydog16 Today, this is not Runrig. Nothing against the new Singer. He tries the best, but please. please let Donnie come back!! He was the Voice of Runrig!! A former Fan, until Donnie comes back!! But than, Runrig forever!!
Yes there is Norse influence in Scotland, it's hard to put everything in a RUclips comment. Well I never said it was "always there", I think Celtic languages (in the Q form) arrived 500 BC or thereabouts in Scotland but I'm not sure (don't think any one is). And since it's IndoEuropean it has to have come from the Caucuses around 4,000 years ago! Linguists do now think though that Q Celtic was first and so Gaelic was already in Scotland before the new P shift (Picitish(British) from the SE.
My Grandfather was a Macdonald originally from Sleat and he married a Macdonald from North Uist[ my granny obviously ]..interesting because his family were never really accepted completely ... maybe this goes back to that battle they talked about...I'm actually related to Calum and Rory in some way...
You're forgetting the major Norse input to Gaelic Scotland. The Goraidh of the song was Guðrøðr Crobh-bhán. Several important clans claim him as their ancestor. Scots Gaelic was 'made in Scotland' by mixing Middle Irish from Ireland with Norse, plus Pictish and Brittish. You don't have to pretend it was 'always there' to make it Scottish now. Everybody and everything originally came from somewhere else, just as there are lots of influences in the music. It's the final mix that gives the blas.
Hi john. (I'm a danish girl)I'm sorry, if I had hurt your feelings, but I have a little bit of scottish blood in me, 'cause long time ago in my family tree there was some scottish family members and some of them traveled to Denmark. ;-) And I can sing some of Runrig's songs in gaelic. Have a nice evening. :-)
@tinasiig no defence.. but it was Donnie´s voice what made them great. Of course Bruce is a good singer, not bad. And I wish, Donnie would come back. And the reasons, why Donnie left the band may be his personal, but i´m missing him (excuse me for my bad english)
Lucky you!!! I adore Runrig--especially the MacDonald brothers. Brilliant songwriters and musicians. stumbled on this song via a drunk typo of "running crocodile" yesterday; glad I did!
... running crocodile. Thank you, I've gone mute with laughter!
😂😂
Are you still listening? I can never let this song go.
Hopefully some day you’ll find your crocodile….
My mother was scottish, it is only recently I have discovered my passion and roots for scotland, still never to late, lol.
14 years on how’s that going?
That’s great to hear . It’s a truly wonderful place . And as you say it’s never too late and you’ll always be welcome
Hope you made it over at some point , didn’t see it was 14 years ago 😮

It doesn't matter who sings the songs, Rory and Calum are deserve all the credit for being such fantastic song writers.
2022 still listening to Runrig, we were fortunate to see them In there hay day many times
I'm as English as they come - but the first live gig I went to was Runrig, and they blew my socks off. Used to have this video. Brilliant band.

Blew my socks off is about the most English thing you could say 😂

U are second to none thanks for keeping the Gaelic alive
Get over it, Donnie AND Bruce are both awesome. All things must change........
All that is Scotland god bless u all thank u runrig
Runrig should tour North America. Both Canada AND the US have a LOT of Scottish ancestral connections. Including me~
Love this! Early version shows how Runrig were top of their game!

Have another drink and it’ll all make sense
Great group. Donnie Munro has a magnificent voice.
Runrig rules! If they do not resonate with you, stop trying! Go find what does! They are amazing!
Hi :) I would hope that Runrig will continue to sing the Gaelic songs, so the language does not disappear.
Wish I'd of heard of Runrig long before I did, Love them feel cheated.
My mothers mother was Macdonald from Uist ( clanranald) her father Macdonald from Sleat. ~ That's why we're all mental.
