Marty is so good, I'm never thinking " oh, he's sweeping that" and "here is the legato bit". Technique in service of great melodies and inventive sequences. Marty is the best.
Such a great way to describe it, hate watching a guitarist solo and just being like oh yep now he’s doing a nice repetitive legato lick, ok now he’s doing a triplet run, u never notice those things with Marty cos ur too focused on his beautiful phrasing!
My all time favorite guitarist. Marty's progressions always evoke so much emotion.
not for me, I think music is really subjective though, sounds like a theme tune for an anime about high school students
@@holliswilliams8426 lol truuue honestly most of martys ballad type songs could be an anime an theme.
@Hollis Williams hate to say it but that's what makes it awesome
Those bends are undeniably Marty love it!
Absolutely ,I agree with many things you said. Marty is an exceptional player and arranger. Obviously the man has dedicated his entire life to growing as a musician and it shows, impeccably.
What I particularly love about his compositions is that they always feature many cool chord changes and modulations. It's not jazz music at all, but I think it's fair to say he composes and improvises with a jazz-like mindset, which makes him very unique in the rock/ metal world.
More Marty?! You're spoiling us! Thanks so much.
One of my favorite players. He is so Melodic.
Seeing him live is other worldly. Deff recommend if you ever get the opportunity
Heart and Soul in this playing, great vibrato, just epic
Goosebumps again! I thought the story in the music video plus the solo was what gave me the goosebumps but same thing happened while following the tabs and trying understand the underlying chords. So powerful.
Awesome video! Marty is such a wonderful player! The fact that he effortlessly plays over any changes shows how wonderful his ear is for music.
A great of example of ability meeting great tase
His playing on "Self Pollution" from his 2017 album Wall of Sound, is probably my favorite composition / solo of his.
It's got everything: killer riffs, interesting arrangements, great chord progressions with lots of unexpected turns... And his lead playings floats so gracefully and naturaly above all these changes, it's incredible.
Absolutely beautiful work
Thanks this is exactly what I was hoping for!
I was a member of drumeo for years. Actually flew out to Vancouver to meet Jared, Dave and crew. Awesome people. It’s awesome what they’ve managed to do with that platform to bring it to other instruments. You’re in with good people there. Thanks for another killer transcription!
hell yeah man! I was a drumeo member before I took up piano, that's why I tried it, I knew they cared about what they made!
I think he’s playing on the first guitar ever built.
ha ha ha
Graet Work, thanks!
That's an incredibly powerful piece of music and one of the best played on the guitar ever.
Thank you for including the chords! Solid work
Awesome work, as always. Marty definitely stands out in the world of rock and metal guitarists. Interesting guitar he's playing here - I don't think I've ever seen him use it outside of these videos. Also, maybe a small thing but I appreciate that your sponsor shoutouts manage to be unique to the video they're on, and STILL educational.
oh for sure man! If I'm going to work with a sponsor, the least I can do is do something unique and educational on each video! :)
He will always be my favorite
thanks for tabbing this it was incredible my jaw dropped
Outstanding ❤
Those unmistakable bends!!!
I remember someone write a comment on marty's MV "easy solo... Nothing special"... And then someone else replay that comment "learn the chord progressions"... I totally agree, the chord progressions is insane 🔥🔥🔥
Wow, known about him forever, but never really listened. This is brilliant! Thanks!
Great chords changes and Solo (and transcription). As you said, He really can plays the changes
6 or so years ago I randomly saw him in a train station in Shinjuku. It's one of the sickest memories of my life. Undertow is such a good song, thanks for the tab and upload.
One of a kind Marty!!
Love that guitar he is playing
my personal favorite guitarist
Love Marty
your said "beautyful piece of music" you are right. up lifting.
Better than expected lots of feel.
Really cool tune, I got hooked on it recently; just noticed as well how much Queen there is in it, all the secondary dominants, modulations, slow bends, and the motive from Jalousie, I love it.
Lovely stuff, reminiscent of his playing on 'Scenes' and a similar Japanese influenced chord progression.
Been a fan since Rust in Peace. Beautiful solo Marty. ❤🎸🔥
Devil Take Tomorrow!!! please!!! make me cry!!!
I remember in an interview he gave way back in his prs days, he talked about taking the Japanese pop approach to songwriting. He made comparisons between the typical 4 chord progressions you see in 90% if western pop music and the long jazzy chord progressions in Japanese pop music. You can see that style with this song.
hi @Levi Clay would you mind doing some transcriptions of Syu of Galneryus? I havent seen you covered his solo's. thanks
Now that was very tasteful! I could just imagine that song being sung by a person? His style mimics the human voice, Not the tone so much but his vibrato maybe? I felt a tear forming in the corner of my eye!! I mean, "he could really make that guitar sing"!!!
Marty is easily one of the top 5 guitarists of all time
The funniest was when Marty and Paul G were jamming, Marty is jamming and Paul was struggling to add content to the Jam ... Paul asked Marty, what key are you in? Marty said I'm not in any key. I thought that was funny to add to a video about music theory.
Best ever😢❤❤❤❤😊
A David Grissom transcription would be great. Unique and exciting style.
Learn the rules, then you can break them. Marty did just that, and it shows. When a person gets to that point, you just let it flow. A true master. I agree though, not the best tone, but that's subjective.
That guitar was found on a pirate ship at the bottom of the ocean.
That Les Paul has seen some better days lol
If you want to test your transcription skills, Listen to Go Off by Jason Becker and Marty Friedman, i for one am interested in the outro with all the whammy bar trills i dont know how they do it haha
Some of the chord progressions remind me so strongly of Queen (eg. "Somebody to Love") and the whimsical melody just adds to it. I'd love to hear this with the Brian May tone patched in.
Marty has said he feels honored when someone compares him to May
@@deforajidos
That's cool, I definitely wood.
There is motive from Jalousie as well.

My favorite Megadeth albums are the Marty years. Learning his leads was such a bitch until you realize he does strange sweepy shit... fucking shred master!🤘🤘
love it, can you try the guitar sbrego by Daniele Gottardo?
Great idea!
Devil take tomorrow please
Sir Levi... Doc by Earl Klugh the changes too🙂
His chord progressions are very J-pop, love it 😍
Are some of those frets scalloped or are they just shiny from use? Can anyone tell?
it looks like they were scalloped to remove the inlays. The guitar was rescued from a fire too.
Oh, I see! Thanks Levi, great transcription too!
And they say shredders don't play with emotion.
Reminds me of a queen tune.
Marty was my first HOLY SHIT guitar master. Slash was the man who really cemented me into picking up the guitar, Appetite was life changing for my 13 year old self…then a taste of Metallica with Justice, which paved the road for heavy music and tight rhythm playing….
And then I got Rust in Peace and heard Marty and that was like OH MY GOD, HOW THE FUCK DO YOU MAKE THAT SOUND LIKE THAT?? Who is this madman with the jet black Jackson Kelly?? My first “real” guitar was a Charvel with those Sharkfin inlays.
This solo is awesome. I love his solo stuff. Some of my favorite Deth era Marty’s are number 5 & 6 from Hangar 18, Lucretia, and the VERY underrated monster from The Killing Road…and of course Tornado.
His “Flipper” picking technique will puzzle players for the rest of time. He also doesn’t like gear and is basically clueless about it. Ohh Martin….don’t ever change 😂
Nice, sounds a bit Queen-esque (not all of it, but some parts)
Thanks for all..
Roy Buchanan?
I always enjoyed his playing but his right hand is working so different from any of the great guitarists. thanks for sharing. never heard this
His right hand lends a lot to his tone, I've found trying to mimic him. His down strokes are very different from his up strokes. He mostly down picks then whips out the sharp uppick when he wants a note to really sing. Picking that way automatically gives you a ton of dynamics that you wouldn't have with the traditional "correct" way to pick. Also it's surprising comfortable once you get used to it.
Hearing lots of Brian May influence here
Living proof there's no single right way to play the guitar
And he played with megadeth.
Just hoping he'll collaborate with the band for a song in the future for the fans. No disrespect to Kiko.
He's the guitarist for megadeth. And I couldn't think of any other guitarist beside Kiko for Megadeth.
Megadeth is at a great place with this current lineup. I would prefer if Marty features Dave on one track for his next solo album. That would scratch the Rust lineup itch for me while having my two favourite acts still going strong😊
Is it just me, or can you hear a bit of Brian May in there at points?
Pre bend vibrato is very Brian May
Why don’t u link the original video.
do you struggle with reading video descriptions?
I'm going to call it and use that very overused word "Masterpiece". Wonderful composition and performance. The official music video is great.
That's picking
Are some of those frets scalloped??
yes, but not by design. It looks like it was to dig the fret markers out.
@@LeviClay interesting, why on those particular frets?
@@justinfantastic4882 because those are the ones that have fret markers
His right hand technique has always astounded me, it looks so uncomfortable the way he picks stuff lol.
It looks so gimpy lol
It's like Friedman doing a Petrucci impression.
Aw..😔 you cut the intro of the song 🥺
Burnt up les Paul lol damn
His playing burned that guitar.👍👍
I love the clickbaity titles. They are like a political statement against the algorithm.
hahaha
this solo is very J-pop-ish...
My boyfriend left me today 😔
Dude you deleted the best solo from this song at the start... like seriously lol that's like giving someone November rain to listen to but cut out all the solos
so much waffling by you when all you had to do was let talent play
So much complaining by you when all you had to do was do the work yourself. Get fucked
I wish Marty were a little more tone-conscious. I've been a fan of his playing for many years, and I don't think EMGs, Engls or BOSS multiFX suit his playing.
I've heard Marty live during Inferno and Wall Of Sound tour and I think that his live tone from PA is great! I think that his tech, Alan Sosa, does a good job, but live mixes are a different thing.
Ummmm.... I must have missed something cuz this did absolutely nothing for me.
