Thanks for this, really sage advice from Marty in this video! Maybe sacrilege, but there’s a bit of Jerry Garcia in Marty’s soling over these chords. ✌️
You are correct Jerry was definitely thinking about the individual chords and targeting specific notes over each chord. Jerry and Marty are more alike than some might think! All the tasty players do this. Anyone can just riff on a pentatonic scale (and sometimes that's appropriate) - but these guys really think about the harmonic movement of the song to make melodies in their improvisation.

57:57 it's not Angel. It's a Black Cat outro.
I didn’t think I was advanced enough to learn anything from this video but amazingly I’ve learned a few things that I was able to pu in use immediately. So glad I stumbled across this video.
i learned how to play waching his videos back in the day, when i diden't know really what
to do? thank you marty friedman
This guy is my favourite guitar player. He is amazing on countdown to extinction.
I'm very far from even attempting a solo, but I love the way he explains the notes in relation to the chords. Seen him with Megadeth on the Countdown Tour. After the show, looked on the floor and found his pick. Still have it.
woah that is so awesome, what a find.
I've always loved Marty's playing. White worm confused me at first, but what a beautiful piece. I grew up with his playing in Megadeth and he stood out above everyone.
that section covering bends is stellar. actually the whole thing is pretty damn sweet. thank you uploader.
Marty has earned my respect
5:20 is just fantastic, It's just as deadpan as everything before I have to wonder If he was thinking about food while saying it : )
He's so full of energy...
Love the hq, I used to replay the intro and ending whenever I could back in the day
He’s a genius.
Now we need an hour long video of his daily hair care routine.
This is the second or third time I'm watching this. Great lesson by Marty!
I saved this video to watch again later while I have my guitar in my hands. Good stuff.
21:59 damn I wish he made a song with that, sounds so beautiful, marty is a goddamn legend
Almost sounds like his song Thunder March
Thank you. I'll be revisiting this as I attempt to develop ideas I've had kicking around for years into something resembling a completed project.
Marty's the best!
My favourite guitar player ever - Marty Friedman !! You can hear and see why ;-)
It is honestly the first time a metal guitar player tells what music is really about. This proves the superiority of genres wrong. Great
Marrty doesnnt even identify as a metal player these days. Look up "marty friedman komorebi" to sample some of his extraordinary range and melodic ability.
What a brilliant person...he has thought everything through mathematically and can summon and execute the patterns he likes in the combinations he likes in relation to the movement of the harmony...and it sounds beautiful.
I love Marty, even there are so many other talented ones, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Clpaton, Frank Zappa, Dave Mustain, Hendrix, Andy Timons, the list's as long as my arm... But, Marty just facinated me. He's something special
Marty's better than all of those guys.
I dont play guitar personally but love Marty ...this video is so relaxing its ASMR Material he's like the Bob Ross of guitar here........Marty Friedman the Joy of Playing 😊
when you sold all of your feelings for guitar playing
He was stoned as hell during this
@@american_psycho1147I thought he was especially when he mentioned the food part 😂😂😂
So true haha
I had this video work on CD long long time ago. I was in my college band. Good old days .🥹
This lesson is right at my skill level. I never thought I'd see a pro video from someone like Marty and actually understand what he's talking about. Then when I cut over to Bernth I'm like, huh? 🫥
He's such a funny dude - sometimes he's coming off with tongue-in-cheek type humor as if he wants to laugh when he's appearing to be serious.
perfect melody player for my ears god damn.
I've never seen anyone hold the pick like Marty.
look up "upward escape picking", he really exaggerates this technique.
I've admired him for the last 25 years, and tried and failed to play anything like him. A superior musician.
this video has a seriously ethereal quality to it
Marty is the only unique guitarist I've ever seen..just from the way he use his right hand is quite different from other players ❤
He looks so bored. Such a master.
He is the best teacher in the history of mankind.
You gotta love Marty, he's a legend!
This is pure gold
The more you think the better you play was my senior highschool yearbook quote
Great upload sir. Many guitarists around the world thank you for this! 🎩🎩
This man is a national treasure
Lucky Japan
This is a great way to give up the minor pentatonic. Thanks Marty for getting me going on the recovery process.
14:36 is some great stuff
The most superior quality VHS can offer.
Has it really been almost 10 years since I watched this gem?
I was getting chills during that jam at 28:00
He's got the most unusual right hand I've ever seen , I know we all have our own but, you don't see people playin like that anywhere
Great Work Thanks marty❤
I've got his Shrapnel stuff in my collection and Rust in Peace. Definitely a great guitarist..
This is amazing but I love Marty staring when he plays that A chord in the beginning
haha
lol jaw clenched too. Dare I say amphetamines? lol
I owe a lot of my soloing chops to Marty's influence. Such a great musician.
I've been playing (piano, guitar as a kid and now drums) off and on my whole life. I'm not great, but of all things in my life, in my opinion, the journey of learning to play music is one of the most unique and beautiful quests life has to offer. And to me, this the most awesome video on the internet about playing music. Thank you for putting it together and sharing!
P.S. how long have you been growing out your hair? Mine is similar but I think a bit shorter, and I'm at about 4 years. Haha anyways! keep rocking out man! Again, such an AWESOME video!!!
best lesson among many.
such a great musician
@24:02 Andaluisan cadence
A minor = A- arpeggio
D minor outline = D dorian because D minor would have Bb . F is the 3rd . if you hit F with A minor
that would be 6 , passing into C major def would skip 4 F and do Sharp #4 in Lydian.
Eb outline with D- would be Phrgian / Phygrian Dominant/ over F )relative of d minor would be F making it an F7 the 6th degree of Bb major would be lydian . F7 would be F mixolydian.
which was stated in the video.
E major - E7 would have 3 notes of the Diminished scale/ whole/half. Or whatever broken Diminished Chord arpeggio you want from the First family of dim chords. Mixolyidan, Phyrgian Domintant B minor Penta on and on and on
So I love marty so much this is great, but absolutely contradicted lol what he said about learning scales, so don't listen to that shit, cause he just outlined modes and scales and didn't make anything up.
Thanks for the upload
This material is amazing, there was this class on VHS tape, thank you very much for sharing! Marty is a great teacher and the approach he uses has very valuable tips!
'Now let's take a note that is totally illegal' 51:18
Thanks for this, really sage advice from Marty in this video! Maybe sacrilege, but there’s a bit of Jerry Garcia in Marty’s soling over these chords. ✌️
You are correct Jerry was definitely thinking about the individual chords and targeting specific notes over each chord. Jerry and Marty are more alike than some might think! All the tasty players do this. Anyone can just riff on a pentatonic scale (and sometimes that's appropriate) - but these guys really think about the harmonic movement of the song to make melodies in their improvisation.
@exluna-scientia No tengo guitarra cerca para comprobar. Uso Subtítulos a español y Pantalla completa. ¿Me podrías/an confirmar/decir lo siguiente toca?
This video really helped a lot when I was a teen learning guitar, its very informative indeed!
Complete amazing lesson
You teach us essence of music in playing guitar, it's not just about lick
He's actually brilliant!! I get it.
His pick hand always tripped me out, its inverted and upstroke/outstroke, or as Troy Grady says, upward pick slanting. You can always tell a Marty solo, great player
Totally! First time I paid attention to his picking hand I had a brief moment of "Hang on, he's not playing that!".
its downward pickslanting in martys case btw
What song is at 27:38? Someone please tell me
Not sure which has aged better, my friend, you or your talent. Keep thinking about food! God bless you. If I had purchased guitar lessons from you instead of from Reeves Gabrels back in the mid 1980s, I would be a professional musician by now. I'm a stone cutter and silversmith now and that's okay.
WHAT A GEM. THANK YOU.
