Still one of the most jaw dropping intros ever in a tutorial tape…no delay, or reverb, no backing tracks…just pure unadulterated and CLEAN playing!
Also the first guitar tape I owned, and still a favourite player and teacher. Paul knew that his students would watch it over and over again so he’s always included humour in his tapes
I must have played this tape to death back in the day…even my mum knew half the dialogue (along with Michael Angelo Batio’s Star Licks VHS!)
And the magic tricks in the style of Tommy Cooper (or Carl Ballantine, for Americans) still make me smile

That's from his Racer X phase! When speed seamed more important than good melody, and yet he gives you at least some of the latter here unlike others. Later on he slowed down for that very reason, because what good is a good melody if it flies by you so quick, 99% of people couldn't possibly process it all? I never knew just how good he was until he slowed down! He's a wicked ass player, and an awesome person too.

I remember getting this video back in 198?-something. It was a game changer for me, and perhaps millions of other guitarists at that time. Paul presented, and explained new ideas, and techniques which I saw later in many upcoming guitar heros. I burned through these video lessons, learning everything that my hands could keep up with. I dont have the largest hands, and finger spread around, but I compensated with other fingerings and right hand applications. In the late 80's, I used some of his chops live in clubs, and they killed! Some of his licks may be outdated now, but the variations which I had adapted have propelled me into my own style. Don't just copy Paul. He is unique, and most guitarists will recognise his personal skills. Absorb his playing style and make it your own. I have done that with many players, which kind of spoils the fun of listening to the masters, knowing where they took it from. But don't let that dissuade you from venturing further on those ideas. Make them you own. Music lovers are always waiting for something new!

I fortunately spent 6 hrs total between 2 days 1 on 1 with Paul at the '86 Chi NAMM in the Kahler booth playing this guitar and a bright pink Mockingbird. He said Carvin was making him a guitar...that didn't work out, lol! How annoying I must have been, 17yo been playing 3-4 yrs YJM, Dio, etc. And here is this guy only a few years older than me but the passion and dedication overflowed as I asked every question I could think of and "wait! Right there...what was that? How did you do that?"
Yep, I was a pest. But there was all the secrets right in front of me all I have to do is ask! I went home that first night and played the things I saw him play (attempted). The next day I told him I noticed this picking problem i had where I would (example) down stroke 4th string to down stroke 3rd string instead of up on 3rd to be an alternate picking method. He said that's what GIT instructor Frank Gambale calls economy picking and teaches this method. He told me to develope the technique and use it to my advantage. So that's how Paul changed my way of picking, playing and attitude towards having fun more often. Peace to you and yours.

Totally agree, in fact it's almost even more impressive, as you can tell he's playing pretty loud too, and not at safe compressed 'home' (Instagram clip) volume. There's also a passion, fire and aggressive beauty in the delivery that only comes from being able to do this stuff Live and Loud.

Nothings changed, people just don't practice as much and sit on the internet instead.

@@BeamRider100 You think people are practicing less today? There are 12 year olds out there easily playing stuff that would have been considered pro level in the 80's and 90's. If anything, guitarists are practicing way more and there are a lot more really good players out there. Most people are never going to be able to pick as well as this guy regardless of how much they practice.

The best part about this is that Paul himself shows you most licks here in the video. I do wonder how many people could actually play the entire thing as well as he does. I can do most of the licks by themselves cleanly but it's another level to combine everything so smoothly like that.

Spot on and well said about combining them, individually yep ok, still not easy, but then just cleanly transitioning is another thing entirely
I wonder how many takes it took him - I wouldn’t honestly be surprised if it was the first 😂
He was probably playing 10 hours a day so was always just ready to rip at the stop of a hat lol

@The Fourth Write Djentleman Yeah, dude. That's the other thing. I can shred, but if it has been a couple of days since the last time I played, I have to warm up a little and get my hands synchronized. To be able to just jump in and shred like that, you have to be in that zone where you know you've been practicing a lot and the everything is in synch immediately.

Most likely not that many. Sure you can learn how to play it note by note, but coming close playing as clean as he does with dexterity and attack, well, that's another story. I recently recorded it as I wanted to play it 20 years ago almost, but never invested much time into it and i know i'd have to practice much more to get it as clean as he does on some parts. But I am okay with that.
