  • Steppenwolf performs "Born To Be Wild" live at the Farm Aid concert in Austin, Texas on July 4, 1986. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.
For more information about Farm Aid, visit: farmaid.org/youtube
Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?

This song impressed quite a number of us in Vietnam in 1968-1969. It was heard over Radio Saigon and on the club juke boxes a million times. Never got tired of it.

Was 16. Parents gone far away...for a long weekend!
Dad left his keys by the door...
A few hours later I sat in his Le Mans. 350cc...
Had never driven a car before. I floored it till the end of the song... it was flying! Windows down... Spring had just started... second biggest rush in my life!

True story. A club in Bloomfield, NJ booked Steppenwolf and advertised the show. Except they forgot to tell John Kay and Steppenwolf. So somebody from the club calls John kay in New Orleans and, lo and behold, he says, "okay, i'll get the band together and we'll come up and play. It was a small place in the mid seventies and my sister went. She said it was outrageous and Kay and the guys were gracious and wonderful with the crowd and blew the doors off the place.

Kevin Kelly not really. some of their early songs were recorded “live in the studio” meaning rehearsed until ready, then recorded in 1 take without punch-in overdubs. i had the extreme pleasure to do foh on a one nighter and it was seriously impressive how much they did play songs just like the recordings i had listened to for years, which helped me tremendously. just sayin too...

Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace

Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once

We were born, born to be wild

Great era of the American rock, for love unity and peace at home and love and admiration for other nations, not the imposed conflict and wars, by our failed two party system.

John Kay and Steppenwolf, at least in its original incarnation of
Goldy McJohn, Jerry Edmonton,Monarch and Nicholas.
were one of the 1960's greatest rock and roll bands.
.. their influence was monumental on future rock and rollers, and rock music in general. They should have been one of the first inductees into the rock and roll hall of fame!

Brilliant album, and I think the first album I got high to. Some friends in a band tried to play The Pusher at a church basement dance and the pastor cut the circuit breakers :)

And the Hell's Angels came to us, I was 10 years old and I was a scared my brother always wears marine cap. They noticed we were poor they gave us some money good guys I saw Steppenwolf in 79 I believe at Fort Bragg maybe 80 and 81 thanks for the cool news wish I could have been there. Now I'm watching Janis Joplin thanks a lot

That 'TOUGH' look was John Kaye's ever lasting contribution to ROCK. When I was a kid, during the '60s, Steppenwolf and MC-5, were the 'outcast nonconformists' of ROCK MUSIC. I was just fascinated by the look, the image, and the music of these two bands. As a teenager and through out my life, Rock bands that 'Shake Up The Industry' are my favorites. Thanks John Kaye, for your contribution to ROCK MUSIC!🤘🎸😝!
(Anyone who would like to KNOW more about Steppenwolf's musical '60s mindset, check out "Ball Crusher" from the album, Steppenwolf 7)

It’s easy to see how keen John Kay was given it all on his long road in reestablishing the name Steppenwolf after all the hasle with the bogus bands ruinning the name of Steppenwolf. This event mend a lot to John Kay & Steppenwolf and he knew it and delt with it A+.

I think the hardest part about playing this track in modern time, is in knowing where to take it next. Just about everyone has heard and loves the original so what can be done to make it just as exciting today? Not an easy task.
