When I heard this album I said this is what Interpol wished they were. Most people I play this album for can't nail the year it was recorded. Timeless music.
Love this album so much. Sounded so much the England I grew up in. Listened to this every birthday until I found a form of happiness I could live with. Awesome.
This is 8 years later and l still cant get over how great this song is, it truly is the the BEST version of the BEST song by the Furs, even above 'Heaven', the original 'Pretty in pink', 'All of the law', 'All that money wants', 'Heaven', 'Sister Europe', 'Love my way', and 'Entertain me'. (my opinion) His voice, timing, tune and voice inflection is spot on here in this video version. Vince Ely's crisp/medium tempo/even keeled drumming is perfection with minimal drum fill interuptions, and keeps the piece moving right along. John Ashton's slightly dialed down electric guitar fits just right here without being overly 'heavy metal' but without any loss of intensity or melodic beauty. Absolutely ripping!! Robert at 68.
Just finished concert in Madison, unbelievable Richard Butler is God!!! They didn’t play this song, which is my all time favorite but still amazing to see in person! Does not disappoint!! Thank you Butler Bros and the rest of the Furs!!
Amazing song. SO thankful for my husband who led me to the Furs and other great music from the same time and genre, as I was only 4 years old when this album came out. Absolutely one of my favorite bands. Can't get enough of Richard's voice and lyrics and the music is perfection.
What makes a good bass player is to have a melodic structure within the song component itself that adds and and supliments without distracting from the main melody. Tim Butler does that in spades throughout the 80's.
...Ya, know what you mean. I'm 66, and only 'discovered' the 'Fur's about 6 or 7 years ago. I am still amazed at what a great piece this is, even over their other 'hits'. I have other posts here commenting on this video. THIS video version is the BEST rendition of this song in my opinion.
This is one of very few songs, maybe 5 in my lifetime, that just sticks in my brain. I had the CD when it came out and marveled over the wall of sound. It will always hook me.
Yes but this is not original audio and video too, it' version... and i'm disapointed for that...why they don't want upload original audio and original music video?!
I can never get enough of this band let alone this song, PF are by far my most favorite band of all time, this song makes the hair on my body stand up.
I like to think Richard Butler reinintroduced this song into his current setlist with additional commentary partly because of me, Bob at 66. As far as I'm concerned, this is the 'Furs 'Stairway to heaven'/'Seargeant Pepper' signiture tune/moment. Not an easy song to sing, voice inflection, timing and off key chord changes...amazing. Tim Butler's bass absolutely superb/complimentary, and a nice tone. AND I think this shortend video version is their best version... And love Vince Ely's crisp/audible no noncense drumming that keeps the piece moving right along. Richards trailing off voicing at end of tune is an awesome sound addition and really adds. Robert at 66.
Nobody has more tuneful/tastey bass licks than Tim Butler. Always a melody WITHIN a melody, and never detracts from the main melodic structure of the composition, other instruments, and vocals, but always compliments.
The Furs are great here on "House" putting out a feeling of loss and getting kicked in the gut. The moody tune resonates a great tempo the picks you up signaling change and hope in life's wake of experiences.
NICE live FOOTAGE of this great song that is underappreciated by the crowd. I AM not sure the crowd gets the mood of this deep cut that moves into intense personal feelings to sort out.
One of their better videos! When there would be a video version and a album version. This is the better of the versions for sure! Great BRITTISH lyricist. One of the best ever.

Interesting song. Just listening to it for the first time. I wasn't listening a lot to alternative rock back in 1989 though I was aware of many artists in the genre. Including the Furs. Already it's among my favorites of their along with Love My Way, Heartbreak Beat, and The Ghost in You.
Best version of House in my opinion. Lead guitar is more muted than the album cut, a more sanitized 80s sound without any loss of immediacy or intensity. An amazing and complete piece in a shortened video format. Butlers more crisper vocals here and his trailing off voicing at end of tune is an awesome sound addition.

This day is not my life
The passing time is not my life
The thorn that's in my side
Is all these scenes that we regret
The wasted words we can't forget
Through the windows of my room
I hear the traffic breathing slowly
Someplace miles away
Make promises pay
Shame, will shake this house
Shame, will shake this house
Your dreams are not my life
These broken words are not my life
Your lies are none of my invention
Your promises were not plan
Now the party girls have gone
I hear the rattle of their heels
Before their footsteps fade
Make promises pay
Shame, will shake this house
Shame, will shake this house
The passing time is not my life
I've been counted down and shouted out
I had everything i wanted
Nothing i can't rise above
To let it show was not my plan
Headlines and frontpages
Sell weddings and divorces
Make promises pay
Make promises pay
Shame, will shake this house
