I miss 80s singers who sang in a dead serious tone in the woods or the moon light and didn’t need to explain a damn thing to anyone!
I miss singers who could sing, who could make a note, who could carry a tune, who could engage the audience...you know, musicians.
And didn’t need to explain a damn thing to anyone! Ditto
Every person who likes this song loves it.
Right on sister!
Peter Murphy reminds me so much of the character, "Hydom Gimleh" in the Japanese Anime - "Space Battleship Yamato"
Anyway great great Music Video.
"You pour yourself over me like the sun through the blinds". Fuck me, that is some gorgeous writing right there.
It's Bauhaus

My family is dysfunctional. One day it was different, I was sitting with my parents and casually chatting, we were laughing, everything seemed "normal". We decided to play a music channel on the TV and while I was looking for some music I came across this song and video, I immediately liked it and turned on Shazam to find it. This song now and always will remind me of that day when it seemed like we were a normal family, a day when there was no yelling and no fighting.

I still think Peter Murphy's greatest achievement is getting an entire subculture to obsess over his cheekbones
Jodie Ella yep.

You too can have those cheekbones - they're just an amphetamine habit away!
@@teresa27909 I realise my comment comes across as quite flippant, but Pete Murphy has always been quite open about his drug use. Both the positive aspects from a creative point of view as well as the negative health consequences that were a big part in Bauhaus splitting up first time around.

i was just thinking that as i watched, stoned and drunk out of my brain. but it's just so good, even to someone like me who likes new music. this is just tops, shame it's not up there in the pop echelons. but that goes for a number of his songs, especially the heartbreaking madeline dietrich song, that song is a tear jerker

All the Bowie comparisons, Peter was and is great all on his own, the end
Bowie is a clown.
The last thing I thought about the first time I heard Peter Murphy was David Bowie, ironically. All those tracks on the 'Deep' album.... didn't sound like Bowie at all.
This!
Bowie was CIA trash from Day 1. He can go rot in hell (if indeed he's even dead). Murphy was the real deal. Didn't need to be an agent provocateur. Didn't need to make anti-White comments. Didn't need to complain about what networks weren't airing what to get his tuneless caterwauling crap onto the charts. Peter only needed to let his music speak for itself.
he doesnt look like him but idk he reminds me of him
This song is such a timeless haunting beauty ... A real treasure indeed.
96 Wave.
Not sure if Eddie Branch is playing that fretless bass with a violin bow on the actual recording but to me that is the sound that gives this song something extra special.
We are already in 2024 and we are listening it !!! ❤
Was thrilled when I met Peter in the late 80s when I worked at a local radio station. He's very slight man, I was taken aback - they always look larger than life on TV/on screen! Very soft, deep voice, not showy at all. Just showed up at the station all alone, no entourage or anything. Made me love him even more! I was never a huge Bauhaus fan, but I do remember listening to his CDs from around that time over and over, great memories.
A guy in my USMC barracks bought this album when it came out, hated it and tossed it in the trash. I picked it out and listened for the hell of it, just one listen. Still one of my go-to albums to date and, I think his best.

Just an observation, but many of the videos from this era, to me anyway, show that the director cared about their craft and put some effort into their work.
videos were like journeys. it's what makes the 80s stuff really interesting looking back now
It was about the song: music, lyrics, not half naked women twerking or metrosexual men
Especially since the budgets were like 50 bucks
The most impressive part is that there was no digital editing then. No such thing as layers of video elements on a computer. Each layer was composited using analog equipment and hundreds of hours of focus and dedication. Lots of cool stuff could be done with green screens and multiple video players feeding into a mixing console, but the high quality equipment was crazy expensive and required studio space to accommodate all of it. Now people can do all this in their phones. Crazy world.
Call me old-fashioned if you will, but these videos are more satisfying than their modern counterparts. Somehow, a hooker feigning lesbian sex just doesn't have the same charm.
The 80s is the gift that just keeps on giving. Almost 40yrs on and still unearthing godly gems!

It's one of the all time great pop hooks. Drum downbeat and wham! You're hooked.
Very underrated artist
Saw him in concert...a long time ago....
When...the concert started...the lights went out and it became so dark I couldn't even see my hand in front of my face....THEN a beam of light to the stage....
THAT ONLY light in the pitch black arena was a beam of focused light that focused ONLY on his eyes....thats ALL you could see....and his eyes were closed.
a moment later....his eyes OPENED WIDE ...
it was THEN I knew I was in the right place at the right time...because Cuts You Up...began.
Lucky!!!
Saw him also, same deal, pitch black, single beam. But the beam hit a hand held mirror ( in Peter's hand) and he reflected the beam around the Warfield in San Francisco,as he sang Bella Lagose's dead. Off the hook!
He's such a wonderful performer. Again, the first time I saw him, he opened with the eye trick, and the crowd went ballistic. I feel blessed for having been standing right down front, against the stage at one of his shows, close enough to have been sweated on by his Elvish Goth Majesty during "Hollow Hills". It felt like a baptism.
I saw him at the Roxy in Atlanta, and witnessed it, such power flowed effortlessly.......
Wow!

This Song only played on WHFS radio in the Washington DC area, finding New Wave music in that area at record shops was also a challenge.
I got to hear this maybe twice a month on WHFS, the DJ Damien would play the best most random music. This song takes me right back to the 80s.
even though this was released in 1990, I still think of this as an 80s song. BTW, it was the 90s that saw WHFS explode in popularity in the DC area, the radio station had Annual music festivals with 8-10 bands NOON too MIDNIGHT... I went to 8 WHFestivals my God they were legendary.
in 2005 WHFS was surreptitiously bought out and turned into a Latino music station over a weekend...DCs never been the same, that entire area including Baltimore and Philadelphia have been transformed since 2008. The era of East coast cities being what they were, is GONE
The more I watch this, the more I realize this is stylistically actually one of the most beautiful music videos ever made. Whatever the hell Peter Murphy is talking about is clearly very personal and introspective, and the video shows that.
its about a wave
@@eeskeeverit8754 middle finger.
Arguably the final classic of 1980's "New Wave", and what a masterpiece it is...I remember this song from his solo 1989 album late that year (even before the single was played ad infinitum on the radio in early 1990) right after the Berlin Wall fell and all hell was breaking lose in Europe with the end of the Soviet Bloc, and right before I, and many others from my generation, were stopped dead in our tracks as Nirvana slapped our brains into an entirely new rock-music dimension. But this song was (is) a beautiful last breath of "deep youth" stretching back to our pre-teen years when MTV ruled the airwaves, along with blonde mullets, weird tight leather pseudo-punk pants, and Murphy looking and singing like the rock god that he was...
You actually summed up what I think about this song. Impressive, I’ll pass on the grunge era. Cheers 🍻
Very accurate. I feel that 100%
Yeah, 1989 gave us some definite gems -- this album (Deep), along with Sonic Temple by the Cult, Faith No More's album with Epic, Mother Love Bone, and Jane's Addictions' Nothings Shocking -- along with a few other classics that I've probably forgotten -- that were still 80's oriented but had an edge to them, that hinted that the new decade would have a lot more going on.
Poetic and accurate
@@chriscampbell9191 Oh, yeah, Jane's Addiction was great; still had that "punk" attitude, but were able to give it a new energy for the time...Got to see them live in Santa Barbara at UCSB in 1989, and man, they lit the place up.

Got turned on to this early 90's. "I don't drive without listening to Rush...but when I do...I listen to Peter Murphy. Stay hungry, my friends" 😆

Melina karen Agree!
It does not matter how many years pass or how many times (thousands) I have heard this...it still gives me chills and moves me like I am hearing it for the first time. That voice, that man. LOVE.
It picks you up and spits you out, truer words were never spoken.
I went to see Peter Murphy with a friend having never heard of him. I was mesmerized,
I became an instant fan. No one is as powerful as Peter Murphy.

Bowie's a genius - Peter's a genius: Peter speaks more from a personal perspective, Bowie more through characters.
I completely agree.
Except for "Rise and Fall of Ziggy and Spiders From Mars" album and for his last one, Black Star where Bowie was extremely personal.
But yes, his whole career was mostly "conceptual" while Murphy is more personal.
@@-NoneOfYourBusiness It's true that Blackstar, The Next Day and Reality were very personal albums. But Ziggy Stardust was the least personal album ever for Bowie, he said it many times himself, it was a way for him to get self-esteem on stage and he had to get rid of the character, because people were associating it with his real self too much.
