Some music reviewer counted the number of time Richard Butler said the word 'stupid' on this record, and I think the count was over 30. Hilarious. He owned implementing the word on the mainstream of the 80s. God I loved this band for hating the mainstream. The 80s was the only decade that really got to have a truly functional and giant underground culture and wow did we love mocking the above grounders.
I get tired of people only knowing Pretty In Pink. They have a unique sound and such intelligent lyrics. Richard is an undervalued frontman as well! Time for a reissue of their albums on 180 gram vinyl.
Who says they aren't or even more respected? In America anyway. They've been around since NYC in the 1980s; had continuous hits with heavy airplay and MTV rotation. They're the Psychedelic Furs, they're HUGE! They still tour. "There's a World Outside" has great songs.
Friend's 18th birthday party, 13th December 1980. Someone put this on & turned off the lights. We all lay on the floor in the dark & listened. Never the same again: I'm still bewitched & enraptured four decades later, by a song that's astonishing in its scope & beauty.
I was listening to this song all night in the dark. Im 20 and a narcoleptic and our dreams are usually vivid and crazy and I had a dream of riding in the car seeing a sky the color of their first album while hearing this song.
I love the disorienting feel of this song. It's like losing a lover and searching for them endlessly in an MC Escher work. Perfectly conveys the singer's heartbreak and discontent.
I have been listening to various songs by Psych Furs since the 80s. Love My Way, Pretty in Pink Heartbreak Beat. I guess maybe I was just a "hits" fan all along. So imagine how amazing it was for me to hear this song, for the first time, when I saw them live two nights ago. They never fail to amaze me.
Consider all their hits and now consider this song. Its mood and atmosphere is what elevated them for me. As with many others upon first hearing, it floored me, the way it pulls you in.
I agree 100%! One of the reasons that I love the Furs has to do with the 'scenes' that the Furs consistently painted for their listeners, e.g. that smokey, sometimes-spooky, dark, lyrically-intriguing, late-night 'film noire' vibe...scens where the details were hidden in the shadows & were worth the search. For me, the origin of the 'scenes' was perfectly summed-up in "Heartbeat", and perfectly encapsulated in this great song - a song that had a very similar effect on me the first time I heard it!
I heard this song in 1981 on a compilation record of “new bands” and fell in love with it. U2 dominated the scene but I loved the Furs, Echo and the Bunnymen, Thompson Twins, and Human League.
When we were young we enjoyed the darkness and the strange sadness. The music of the Furs brought us together and made us see that we were not alone. Then we knew that it would be forever.
One night late after 2am I turned on a new TV channel called MTV. I just got home from work and loaded a bowl of awesome Moroccan primo hash. As my buzz cruises through my psyche and out my eyes this sax starts blowing there's black and white ripple designs. And Sister Europe slithers out the speakers. This was introduction to the Psychedelic Furs and I've never looked back. Seen em so many times I've lost count. Never disappoint
The song and album that hooked me on the furs. It set the tune of era for me. Spent many a late night cruising the empty Chicago streets in the '80's with this playing at "11". Sooooo under rated!
Amen, sista. They played a show in Dallas, in the mid 80s at the long lost and much missed Bronco Bowl, and it was easily one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen-Richard’s stage presence, and the beautiful execution of those timeless songs. I think they were opening for someone else that night, and they just blew whoever else was playing right off the stage. I saw them several times in the 80s, I think they must have toured for a decade nonstop, and they were always great, but that particular show was special, even for the Furs. I don’t go in much for nostalgia, but damn if I don’t miss the days when pop music was (mostly) this good. The 80s (bleeding over into the 90s a little bit) were the last great decade for pop music-the mix of sounds (and visuals if you count MTV) was amazing.
Lauren St. David great reply thanks for sharing hope they hit Washington DC and another band I’m deep into is Talk Talk missin Mark Hollis so much of his music inspired me thru a bad choice that helped me put it to an end. I dislike Pretty in Pink - intensely. If I'd heard this first, I would have paid more attention to the Psychedelic Furs. (I was a bit young in 1980 to appreciate this, and only knew PiP from the film!)
Wow -a sleeper - along with All That Money Wants - just great atmospheric gothy Fur. Repetitive bass guitar strumming reminds me of Killing Joke, another great but nearly forgotten 80s band.
I'm an Uber driver in Jersey and this song came on the radio a few weeks ago when I had just picked up a customer. They were impressed with my music diversity...I turned the radio up as loud as I could stand it , dropped my customers off and collected a sweet tip.
@@sumdrumkid1989, I'll see them tomorrow night. They're two bands that have released recent material that is easily as good as they were back in the day. Not many can say that!
I agree. I put him right up there with Robert Smith. Don't forget about Ian McCullough of Echo and the Bunnymen. I'm 66 now. Bring Back the Good Old Days. But that was the 70's with probably a long forgotten band, Pavlov's Dog.
It was a trip I was gladd to go on but the original furs were the king of mood and sweeping you away. Even Richard Butler's latest album has the same quality
When I saw the psychedelic furs at the end of the show Mr. Butler walked down from the stage and he let everybody touch him as he held his arms out like Christ, It was wonderful. Sort of regret now not going up close like everyone else but I’m very disabled and afraid I would hurt myself. I love him so much especially “heaven. “
Wow. I'm sorry you couldn't get up close but I'm glad you got to see them live. I missed their concert in Houston because I had no one to go with and I have bad anxiety disorder and was afraid to go alone.
@@AnnaThezia The good thing is it was a tiny place. My daughter moved to Houston and goes to concerts there. When did they play there? I would be afraid to go to a concert in Houston because it is too much of a big city for me. But you should never be afraid to go to a concert alone.

Was up against the stage at Stone Pony outdoor Furs concert last summer and the timing of an incoming storm and night fall while they played this was amazing. The wind was picking up and blowing the smoke at us. It was so cool. Luckily it didn’t rain but what perfect timing.
Back in the day, I worked at a Music land in Wichita Kansas. Then, most all of the charting, popular music was absolute shit. I hated it! But, in 78, when I started working there, it became so exciting. Like, from 78 to 81 as the occasional punk, then post-punk, then new wave LP's would occasionally show up in our weekly boxes of product. The buyers made random catalog selections for US and import vinyl. I soon realized that I needed to unpack that box my self. We got a great discount. So, I would buy LPs solely based on if the cover looked like something cool was inside. Psychedelic furs. Yeah, let's get this one. OMG. This new music saved my life! Sister Europe was like oxygen. Still gorgeous!! Still have those LP's.
Love the Furs! Brings back memories of a film production class. I recorded this piece on 1/4 " tape reel to reel. Cut the chorus out, looped the tape, held the slack while the tape rounded the deck heads with my #2 pencil, and re-recorded the sampling. Ta Da, minimalist soundtrack for my Super 8 short.
They opened for the Talking Heads Remain in Light Tour in Boston in 1980. First concert I ever went to. First song was "india". First song of first concert I ever went to. It was such an onslaught of racket and intense perfection that I've been chasing it ever since. . . .

No one with any taste 'underrates' the first two albums, but after that time the stuff they did is quite correctly rated as second division MOR/AOR/MTV
I went to see the Furs at the Russell Club/Factory in 1979. I say ‘see’ them because I have no memory of the concert due to a heady mix of pills and beer, but my mates say I had a great time. Loved them back in the late 70s
Your post made made me laugh cuz im guilty of not remembering great concerts cuz i was fckd up. I saw the Furs twice but i only remember india from one.
I've always loved this song, I bought the LP when it first came out - only because it looked dark and cool, I had never heard of them or any of their music, still dig Richards voice...!
When I'm in a certain mood, I crank up the Psychedelic Furs. Particularly this very song! Seen them live in 2003, awesome, wild fun and entertaining 👌! I even danced next to a bald dude in a dress! First time for everything I suppose.
True success for a hit song with these lyrics is that, reading the comments, we all have different associations and interpretations of the song, and of course different memories. I always thought of this song whenever I arrived on continental Europe - that "I'm home again". Europe - my true home. X
Dear Mr. Butler and The Psychedelic Furs, I am writing to tell you that I bought your albums in highschool at the age of 15 in Little Five Points in Atlanta, Georgia at Wax and Fax. True
Psychedelic Furs invented the 80s sound. Their music breaks my heart and carries the soul of my youth.
Oh yeah, when I hear them I am transported back to those great earlier days. So good
The isn't the 80s sound, though this is clearly the beginning of shoegaze and better than any of the bands in that genre.
No. its the sound of david bowie in Heroes (1977)
This song was released in 1981 I believe
I can't forget the first time I've heard this song, total masterpiece

This holds up. Richard Butler's vocals are an inspired blend of David Bowie and Johnny Rotten, which makes sense for a London band from that era.

Stupid on the Steinway
So sick upon a steinway
The sailors drown
See them talk and see them drown
And see them drink and fall around
Upon the floor
Sister of mine, home again
Sister of mine, home again
Lonely in a crowded room
The radio plays out of tune
So silently
The radio upon the floor
Is stupid it plays Aznavour
So out of key
Sister of mine home again
Sister of mine home again
Broken on a ship of fools
Even dreams must fall to rules
So stupidly
Words are all just useless sound
Just like cards they fall around
And we will be
Sister of mine home again
Sister of mine home again
Buy a car and watch it rust
Sister see them fall to dust
They fall around
In another crowded room
Paint me like the shirt I'm in
Honestly
Sister of mine, home again
Sister of mine, home again
Sister of mine
Sister of mine
Sister of mine
Sister of mine

Also 14 when I first heard this, thanks to my dad. It was so unlike anything else I'd heard. Proper hairs on the back of the neck moment.
I forgot about this one..how could I?
Saw them at university of Pittsburgh in my math class room. Phenomenal band
I freaking love the furs
I've always loved this song, I bought the LP when it first came out - only because it looked dark and cool, I had never heard of them or any of their music, still dig Richards voice...!
This song stayed in my mind all day long. I was humming it when I was working. I love it!
💋 we love it!
@@lifelearner45lloyd97 I'm seeing them this Saturday. I hope they do this one.
Whoever did the production of this. . Excellent job on the knob turning

Steve Lillywhite
@@LBOYLE18 I'll check that out
Great, great band. Always in my mind forever. Thnkas for your music.
thank you for putting Sister Europe on RUclips
When I'm in a certain mood, I crank up the Psychedelic Furs. Particularly this very song! Seen them live in 2003, awesome, wild fun and entertaining 👌! I even danced next to a bald dude in a dress! First time for everything I suppose.
True success for a hit song with these lyrics is that, reading the comments, we all have different associations and interpretations of the song, and of course different memories. I always thought of this song whenever I arrived on continental Europe - that "I'm home again". Europe - my true home. X
Sweet
Первый раз слышу эту песню. Очень понравилась, классная, красивая музыка, полёт фантазий в невесомость
Dear Mr. Butler and The Psychedelic Furs, I am writing to tell you that I bought your albums in highschool at the age of 15 in Little Five Points in Atlanta, Georgia at Wax and Fax. I am 52 years of age now. I was part of the Atlanta Metroplex and 688 Club, younger and regular crowd. I bought a pair of pink stilettoes in honor of 'Pretty in Pink'. Your Art is stunningly beautiful. I am so impressed with you and your Art. In Love and Sweetness, Gayle Raye Bremer
688 club !! It was Different for sure !! Good to hear someone talk about places I've been. I still talk about that place. Down here in Valdosta !!
They used to play this video in the NYC new wave clubs, real early 80's.
These guys knew how to pen a tune.Fantastic band who made catchy song after catchy song.
Nothing like a little kicking back while listening to some Furs.

RIP Mars Williams 😪
I didn't believe you. No body told me. I missed him they came through in September. I've met him and partied with him. Oh man. I feel gut punched. He was such a grand pixie with an incredible laugh. He could really blow that horn. Mars, Stanley Turentine, Harumo Imai, and Dick Perry. We still have Dick and Harumo 2 out of the 4 best sax players. Time to dance
I certainly don't like being th bearer of tragic news!@@davidlancaster8152
@@davidlancaster8152 Was he fey? Certainly a looker!
@@kevinbouchard3906 He was a beautiful person inside and out a always a perfect gentleman. I don't know if he was fey , whom ive met and experienced in person, but could plat that sax like no one else. He was one of a kind in looks, performance and kindness. One of a kind. I still love him.

The day my friend stole the tape of mirror moves changed my life. He didn't like it, so he gave it to me. Instant love. I was 17 and those were hard times for me. Putting the big headphones and listening to them for hours really helped me. Thank you guys. ps:Forever now is my favorite albums.
