This song and video captured Joy Division's outward musical ethos perfectly. Four young men, dressed in formal wear in an empty room nearly devoid of color. Peter Hook seeming angry while playing an incredible riff. Bernard struggling to play the ethereal perfectly. Steven hammering a tight, flawless driving beat. And Ian, with an exhausted, but soulful delivery of a beautiful melancholy summary of love that is nearly dead. Aurally captured and enhanced with the musical production talents of Martin Hannet. This is how Joy Division will be remembered.

Can see why Hook is such a skilled bass player. He is really doing the melody and rhythm on the bass here, and carrying it forward until Ian comes in at the end. Really cool to watch him do it.
The Sound that came from England between 1979 and the 1980s is just unmatched by anything before and after. The Sound and the Mood. I don't know why it touches me so much like it does. But it just makes me feel so much like home. Like sitting with really really close friends together and feeling like a human being experiencing absolute beauty and bliss. To be fair, the post-punk and gothic rock of that time period were major influences on the indie rock scene, and they are influences that continue to be heard in the music of the underground. There's also this solo act who kinda reminds me of Joy Division; it's called Harsh Symmetry, whose style captures the spirit of the post-punk and goth culture.
Crazy to think there's still some kid out there who feels like no one understands them and hasn't heard this yet, and that when he or she does it will quite possibly change their life forever.
I just heard this for the first time two days ago (Memorial Day 2020) and I think it has already changed my life. I don't think of myself as a kid anymore, but then, I don't believe that only kids can change their lives. Peace ya'll, it's all love.

Just now in this precise moment on a day like today but 40 years ago, Ian Curtis took his life, leaving behind a legacy with his song telling of his failed marriage, Rest in peace this legendary singer and may his music live forever
I love this song because it has so much soul. It doesn't sound like something they would make for their fans or in attempt to get big and famous. It sounds like just bunch of talented guys jamming together and coming up with this beautiful song that they wrote from the heart. Its very relatable for that reason for me
Even though there's a drone on the tonic note, somehow the song never resolves on the tonic until 2:56. Then it stays resolved, even with some small chord changes around it. A quiet little bit of magic contributing to a very compelling song.
The guy was an absolute genius. A working class hero. The band were also incredible proven by the success of New Order. Probably my favourite band of all time.
My best friend thought it was a really bad idea to put this song on the mixed tape that played during my wedding ceremony. divorced now, my former wife remains a good friend. Every year for laughs I send her this song and it never fails to get a positive response. That's nice. Sometimes the little things make all the bad things of the past much easier to handle. Great music seems to do that. This song never fails to make us both realize that failing in a relationship isn't the worst thing that can happen. really bad taste in music is by far the worst thing that can happen. for me the sweet irony of this song will always be a way to connect with a good friend, whom I still love.
This song, this album showcased my life and all I was as a teen. I listened on headphones riding endlessly entranced by its melancholic sounds that penetrated every cell inside me...and it still brings me there today.
Honestly the best version of the song, the guitar sounds so bittersweet, there's acoustic and a muted electric, Ian's voice sounds so crisp and upfront. I don't see much conversion about it online wish I did and wish this was on spotify or able to listen to it elsewhere
Agreed, the outro is so much better. This is known as the "Radio Version" and it is the one that you're supposed to hear along with the video, the other upload's got it wrong (You can tell they're miming to this one if you look close enough). It was included on this release: ruclips.net/video/rLXNZA5a1ME/видео.html

Amazing song. A friend of mine 15 years ago gave me a biography about Ian. So reading this i discovered about Ian's epilepsy..life was not so easy for him.
It is amazing how one man that was only in the public eyes for about a couple years create such a legacy. Ian Curtis became a legend instantly... pretty much!
One of the most underrated bands ever. People completely underestimate how much of an influence Joy Division had on music (in all aspects) at the time, even though their tenure was a short one. For example U2 themselves owe Joy Division a lot for their sound. Nevermind other artists and bands of the era.
Joy Division are anything but underrated, they are one of the most iconic influential post punk bands ever. if you think they are in any way underrated then you know nothing about music!
@@paulph12002 I meant relatively to their outsized influence they are fairly underrated as most people aren't aware of them. And you could have just replied without being a dickhead. If your knowledge of music is made up of being an arrogant ass, then you may want to reassess that "knowledge".
I totally agree. I hear Joy division in so many of my favourite bands. The impact they had on music is absolutely massive. One of the things that blows my fucking mind with this band is the maturity they had at such a young age. Atmosphere is one of my favourite songs and it sounds like it came from a mind that had been writing songs for decades. It's incredibly elegant and heartfealt songwriting and the world will never be ready to tire of them I think %

I come back to this thread every now and again and the one thing that always strikes me every time l do is the complete love there is for Ian. In 20 years from now I think the same will be true, people like Curtis don't disappear and people like us I guess are the custodians.
Your picture is lovely. I don't know if that's the right thing to say- I'm just saying that you're an attractive person and probably nice too. I hope you have a really good new year.
Makes this version the best one. To me tho, it represents stoicism, that philosophy where beautiful ignorance is worse than painful knowledge. Idk why, but the combination of multiple d major chords and the following minor chord sorta speaks to me that way
When routine bites hard, 일상은 가혹하고 And ambitions are low, 야망은 사라져갈 때 And resentment rides high, 분노는 치밀어오르나 But emotions won't grow, 감정은 자라나지 않을 때 And we're changing our ways, 우리가 살아가는 방식을 바꾸고 Taking different roads. 다른 길로 접어들 때 Then love, love will tear us apart again. 그 때 사랑, 사랑은 다시 우리를 갈라놓을거야 But love, love will tear us apart again. 사랑, 사랑은 다시 우리를 갈라놓을거야 Why is the bedroom so cold? 어째서 침실이 이리도 차가운거지? I have been playing drums for 40 years and this drummer is from a different planet. Unbelievably good
Got my respect thats for sure.
look up this song = faceless humming by the impures
check it out :D
Why ??... It's a pretty easy beat 🪘 over and over again. 💯 %
@@victorpeirce4753 keeping up that speed on the high hats for more than 90 seconds makes your fingers feel like they got microwaved

Can see why Hook is such a skilled bass player. He is really doing the melody and rhythm on the bass here, and carrying it forward until Ian comes in at the end. Really cool to watch him do it.
Can definitely hear the New Order in there
One of the best songs ever written and song. Even after 20 years i still listen and love this song.
You mean over 40 years
The Sound that came from England between 1979 and the 1980s is just unmatched by anything before and after. The Sound and the Mood. I don't know why it touches me so much like it does. But it just makes me feel so much like home. Like sitting with really really close friends together and feeling like a human being experiencing absolute beauty and bliss. And Ian.... you will never be forgotten. Your Bandmembers made sure to honor you properly. Best wishes from a fellow German. ❤
To be fair, the post-punk and gothic rock of that time period were major influences on the indie rock scene, and they are influences that continue to be heard in the music of the underground. There's also this solo act who kinda reminds me of Joy Division; it's called Harsh Symmetry, whose style captures the spirit of the post-punk and goth culture.
you "germans" aren't special or any better than any others.... so get ova ya selfs...
your right aye between bout 79 and 83 just after disco but before the big hair bands of the mid-late eighties, and hip hop
RIP Ian Curtis. 40 years since today
he was the Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison of our Generation
@ hear hear! So lucky to see these guys, during my Punk days!! Got the train home to Stoke, thinking.. Oh my fukin god, I'm blessed!! 👍 🙏
Where did the time go..40 years
How did he die?
@@AlexBonesJones he committed suicide
Crazy to think there's still some kid out there who feels like no one understands them and hasn't heard this yet, and that when he or she does it will quite possibly change their life forever.
Nicely said
It changed Ian's life forever.
He gave me that Gift. RIP Ian. You have no idea how many people LOVE you. I weep in your absence Ian. THANK YOU.
no
I just heard this for the first time two days ago (Memorial Day 2020) and I think it has already changed my life. I don't think of myself as a kid anymore, but then, I don't believe that only kids can change their lives. Peace ya'll, it's all love.
Popped in from 3049 to say this is still one of the greatest songs of all time.
You may as well get in there early 😅
One of the best song ever written.
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams
Stephen Morris, one of the most criminally underrated drummers of all time.
Almost single handedly introduced polyrhythmic patterns to non-jazz. Awesome.
Indeed 💎
Hear hear.
I remember the old argument. “That’s not a real drummer, that’s a drum machine”
Wrong on both counts. That’s the percussion god that is Mr Morris.
Finally!!!!! someone who agrees with me. He's a brilliant drummer Scotty. He doesn't have to use a drum machine. He's the best.
What a tune, RIP Ian in heaven you are now, no more suffering
Poor, poor man...
That intro still gives me chills!
It gave The Who the chills before this too.
Ditto
It’s very hunting but very cool
Just now in this precise moment on a day like today but 40 years ago, Ian Curtis took his life, leaving behind a legacy with his song telling of his failed marriage, Rest in peace this legendary singer and may his music live forever
And hes effectively telling us why in this.....
@This is my B00Mstick Never knew that man, cheers.....I knew that he really really meant all of this song and it wasn't created out of nothing....
Rest in peace, Mr. Curtis! You live forever through this song.
His voice omg. His soul haunts this song forever takes me back to my youth. 13 or 14 the 1st time I heard it and felt his pain so hard thru it
Voted the best single of all time. And still amazing
I love this song because it has so much soul. It doesn't sound like something they would make for their fans or in attempt to get big and famous. It sounds like just bunch of talented guys jamming together and coming up with this beautiful song that they wrote from the heart. Its very relatable for that reason for me
One of the greatest songs ever written
Rip Ian curtis 41 years gone but never forgotten
Even though there's a drone on the tonic note, somehow the song never resolves on the tonic until 2:56. Then it stays resolved, even with some small chord changes around it. A quiet little bit of magic contributing to a very compelling song.
"Just that something so good
Just can't function no more"
Right in the feels.
The guy was an absolute genius. A working class hero. The band were also incredible proven by the success of New Order. Probably my favourite band of all time.
Yes..iceman90
They’re awesome aren’t they!?!?! A lot of talent in that band
How can a song be so melancholic, but uplifting at the same time? That's what music has lost now😢
Whats a fucking masterpiece. Still cant believe human being can do so
My best friend thought it was a really bad idea to put this song on the mixed tape that played during my wedding ceremony.
divorced now, my former wife remains a good friend.
Out of all of the comments I've read, this one must be one of the best
psml

Wish you and your ex all the happiness!
@@tarbus8932 Ditto from Ireland 🇮🇪🙌
I first heard this when I was 14, am 56 now and it still gives me goosebumps. So beautiful. Miss you Ian ❤️
What a fantastic piece of drumming, and a stupendous bass line. An exemplary example of how the backbone of a rock/pop band should work.
Hi I recommend a song and album called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
This song, this album showcased my life and all I was as a teen.
I listened on headphones riding endlessly entranced by its melancholic sounds that penetrated every cell inside me...and it still brings me there today.
For me, this must be the best version. The addition of the acoustic guitar has a profound impact on the emotions I feel listening to this song.
It was included on this release: ruclips.net/video/rLXNZA5a1ME/видео.html
it's a bitter-sweet song. i remember the feelings when i 1st heard this song.
it was oddly on a rainy day. A day of heavy rain in the 1980s. ☮️🎶-j from mystery wife's RUclips with her permission of course.
When the lyrics the artist is singing are true you can just feel it. Phenomenal song. So sad we will never hear anything else from this brilliant artist. Rest in peace my friend.
Hi I recommend a song Called 'the bond villain' By Robert Nix
When routine bites hard and ambitions are low sums up depression perfectly
Amazing song. A friend of mine 15 years ago gave me a biography about Ian. So reading this i discovered about Ian's epilepsy..life was not so easy for him.
This song never gets old
Never!!!
This song is like an occasional self-indulgent treat for me. I just can't hear it without going back in time and crying. Here's my go for this year.
This song plus that’s entertainment by the jam and this charming man by the smiths, got to be some of the greatest songs of all time.
Cheers to that
facts.
Some of the most poignant, beautiful and bitter sweet lyrics ever commited to record
Big Facts
Jayson Davis agreed plus most other smiths songs.
It is amazing how one man that was only in the public eyes for about a couple years create such a legacy.
Ian Curtis became a legend instantly... pretty much!
You can hear every strum every pick everything ❤
I’ve never seen this before. Just to see Ian made me cry. I know there’s not a lot of footage of him, but I’m grateful we have this.
so Timeless...even after all these years, I never get sick of listening to this sublime chune... RIP dear Ian, you are still Loved more than you know
Back here, again. Paying homage and honouring the magic that this song truly is, & the legend that is Ian Curtis. R.I.P.
God damn Stephen Morris is a great drummer. He plays that beat for three and a half minutes like it’s nothing!
And not break a sweat!
What good is perfect beat if it dominates / The remaster may have done that
He did two tracks for this song but yeah he’s insane
If you listen to the Boy album by U2, you can definitely hear elements of Joy Division especially on the song, Twilight.
It's incredibly elegant and heartfealt songwriting and the world will never be ready to tire of them I think
%
I can assure you that they weren't underrated in the UK! I grew up listening to, and buying, this stuff. And New Order subsequently.
Underrated guitar work for sure, vocals that capture an era and without a doubt one of the top songs on this decade.
Best song ever ❤
This song is too real. I love how truly haunting is. Every lyric is genuine, more genuine and more haunting than anything that comes out today
I met this incredible friend in twitter that introduced my into lots of music including joy division. You know how you can recognize a friend of yours instantly in a crowded place among hundreds of people cuz your friend's face is inscribed in your memory? Similar to that, Eveeytime I listen to joy division, I find my friend's presence in them songs. she's a big david Bowie fan but joy division reminds me of her more than Bowie. We have parted ways but I'm still grateful I was lucky enough to come across her and timeless music like this. Bless you Olga
TL;DR - Yeah, but no, but yeah but.....
woahh we literally have the same taste i’m a big bowie fan but i really like joy division lol
I come back to this thread every now and again and the one thing that always strikes me every time l do is the complete love there is for Ian. In 20 years from now I think the same will be true, people like Curtis don't disappear and people like us I guess are the custodians.
I sincerely hope Ian's family and mates know so many people love him, and are being those custodians of his art.
I could listen to a thousand million versions of love will tear us apart, and need nothing else
2021 is coming, I'm completely alone again and this is the perfect song for tonight...
Don’t be sad....
Your picture is lovely. I don't know if that's the right thing to say- I'm just saying that you're an attractive person and probably nice too. I hope you have a really good new year.
Same here
we can be lonely together :)
You are a beautiful girl. Loneliness sometimes is nice. Hugs!
From 2:57 makes me feel so nostalgic but at the same time sad thinking about what might have been...I love this band...
Makes this version the best one. To me tho, it represents stoicism, that philosophy where beautiful ignorance is worse than painful knowledge. Idk why, but the combination of multiple d major chords and the following minor chord sorta speaks to me that way
This is the best version by far. The acoustic guitar at the end is awesome.
VERSION?.....WTF!

Forever my favorite… this song is the soundtrack of my life…
First time hearing this version, especially the last 40 seconds; sounds really good. Ian Curtis was exceptional.
When routine bites hard,
일상은 가혹하고
And ambitions are low,
야망은 사라져갈 때
And resentment rides high,
분노는 치밀어오르나
But emotions won't grow,
감정은 자라나지 않을 때
And we're changing our ways,
우리가 살아가는 방식을 바꾸고
Taking different roads.
다른 길로 접어들 때
Then love, love will tear us apart again.
그 때 사랑, 사랑은 다시 우리를 갈라놓을거야
But love, love will tear us apart again.
사랑, 사랑은 다시 우리를 갈라놓을거야
Why is the bedroom so cold?
어째서 침실이 이리도 차가운거지?
You've turned away on your side.
당신은 등을 돌렸어
Is my timing that flawed?
내 타이밍이 그렇게 나빴던 건가?
Our respect runs so dry.
우리의 서로 존중하는 마음은 메말라가고 있어
Yet there's still this appeal
아직은 우리가 살면서 유지하고 있었던 것이
That we've kept through our lives.
호소하고 있지만
Do you cry out in your sleep?
당신, 잠든 채 울고 있는거야?
All my failings exposed.
나의 모든 실수들이 드러났군
Get a taste in my mouth,
입에서 절망에 사로잡힌
As desperation takes hold.
맛이 느껴져
Why is it something so good
어째서 아주 좋은 무언가가
Just can't function no more?
더 이상 제 구실을 하지 못하게 되었을까?
Best song ever written. I find it impossible that such a young lad can perfectly describe the break down of a relationship
"AMEN"🙏
I'm 43 now and I can't bend my head around creating something so fucking perfect at 23

The mans emotion is driving every note, every chord. Brilliant.
Not just Ian Curtis, but Steven Morris, Peter Hook and even Bernard all played their souls out on this song! Steven's drumming punched out this song. Love it, then now always.
I respect melancholy.
I luv this tune. It is the soundtrack of my youth. I play an excellent airguitar to that stirring opening riff in Bruxelles niteclub !!!
